Tee Off For Teens

Golfers at the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence’s inaugural Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament held last Wednesday at the Maidstone Club in East Hampton raised an impressive $126,000 to support the agency’s youth-focused programs. This first time event compliments LICADD’s R. Brinkley Smithers

Invitational Golf Tournament, which was held in September in Nassau County. LICADD Board Director and resident of East Hampton and Locust Valley, Alfred E. Devendorf was pleased by the support of the local community, he remarked “LICADD has been graciously welcomed on the South Fork and the response to this event has been overwhelming. East

End business owners and local residents, including Southampton Mayor Mark Epley, have been extremely generous in their support of our programs.” “The demand for our services from young people and their families continues to soar,” explained LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, “and schools are hungry for

proven prevention programs that go beyond scare tactics and give kids the tools necessary to resist peer pressure, enhance family communication and ultimately stay safer. Funds raised at the TeeOff for Our Teens tournament will help us reach more kids and assist more families across Long Island, with a renewed emphasis on the East

Concussion of the brain is the very common injury that occurs under different circumstances. It can occur during the simple slip and fall accident, motor vehicle accident, but most commonly it does in sport. Over the last ten years a lot of research was done with an intention to explain why there is much higher incidence of neurological disorders affecting professional sport players. This study eventually revealed that a mild head injury causes pathological processes that eventually may lead to neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s, etc. During the mild head injury or mild concussion of the brain, the symptoms of the actual injury could be transient and brief, and eventually this condition becomes virtually asymptomatic or having very subtle symptoms. Those symptoms could be just a mild headache, excessive fatigue, excessive or lack of sleep, problem with concentration. Since many symptoms of concussion are brief and may not be present on the second or third day after the concussion, it will leave very little tools to help a doctor to determine if the player is ready to go back to play. Current thinking is that optimal recovery of concussed students occurs when there is cognitive, physical, and emotional rest following injury. Additionally, research has shown that 92% of second injuries occur in the first week following the initial injury, and the goal is to allow adequate recovery time before allowing a student to risk re-injury. Pressure to return an athlete before it is safe can be intense from parents and athletes. Primary care physicians are being asked to assist in the process of keeping injured children safe by remaining objective and withholding participation until it is deemed safe with a reasonable degree of medical certainty.

return to school), but we anticipate a similar slow exertional challenge as we see in RTP. The graduated steps begin after the student has a medical clearance to return to academics, and is symptom free off pain killing medicines for a full 24 hours. RTL should be an individualized steady progression with the parent’s checking the child daily for a return of symptoms and alerting you if the student is struggling so you can provide appropriate requests for medical accommodations to the school as needed. Unlike a RTP, the RTL might start at any level and progress at a rate individualized to the student’s needs and tolerance. Steps might be skipped as tolerated and might look something like this: Students with reasonable recovery times typically will get accommodations within the school by the principal. Students with protracted recovery beyond about 10 weeks, a school quarter, are likely eligible for a 504 plan or an IEP, and you might be asked to write a request to support the family at that time.

The Concussion Act of NYS

The Concussion Act of NYS took effect July 1, 2012, and requires schools to: • Educate parents, athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, physical education teachers, and school nurses on concussion, • Remove observed or suspected concussed students from play based on signs and symptoms, • Withhold further participation until evaluated by, and received written and signed authorization to return to activities from a licensed physician. • Obtain physician clearance, and when the athlete has been symptom-free off pain killing medicines for a minimum of 24 hours and allow them to begin a monitored progressive six phase return to play. MAKING A CLINICAL DETERMINATION • Symptoms: somatic (e.g. headache, nausea, dizziness), cognitive (e.g. feeling in a fog), and/or emotional (e.g. liability)

• Behavioral changes: irritability, personality changes • Cognitive impairment: Hard time concentrating, trouble remembering, not feeling themselves, being confused, thinking speed slowed down, taking a longer time to react • Sleep disturbance: drowsiness, insomnia GRADUATED RETURN TO PHYSICAL EXERTION AND ACTIVITY OR RETURN TO PLAY (RTP) This is a six step gradual return to activity. The RTP protocol may not start until an athlete is completely symptom-free for a full 24 hours off pain killing medicines, and must remain symptom-free for 24 hours following each stage before progressing further. RECOVERY Average recovery following concussion is about a week to ten days; protracted recovery with post concussion syndrome is after 21 days. Young teenage girls often have protracted recovery more than any other group. RETURN TO LEARN (RTL) More information will be forthcoming about RTL (cognitive

(NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of

sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what you clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive. There’s a way to stretch your dollars. • Mind your budget: JAWS Glass & Hard Surface Cleaner

(www.jawscleans.com) cleans granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, glass and even your flat-screen TV. It’s also non-toxic and costs less than most other cleaners because each JAWS product is actually two bottles in one. (The cartridge refill is attached to the bottle.) There are also some other basic preventive measures you can take to protect your granite countertops:

• Use coasters: Place a coaster under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices that can etch or dull the surface of many stone countertops. • Use trivets or mats: They’ll protect your granite countertop from hot dishes and help avoid scratches. Granite countertops can really add spark to a kitchen or bathroom. Proper care will keep them looking beautiful.

Full disclosure: I am a Yankee fan. Always have been, always will be. That said, I fully respect those who are not. However, as with politics, when a rivalry takes a turn toward bitter hatred, I lose that respect. Let’s be reminded that, contrary to larger, more world-defining issues, baseball is a game – a highly profitable one, yes; but still, just a game. I laugh when I hear those who use the Yankees’ exorbitant payroll as a valid reason for despising each and every player on the team. Need it be pointed out that just about every team in the MLB employs numerous multi-millionaires on its roster? Is the difference between $5 million for one player versus $20 million for another really that different in the larger scope of things? These are grown men playing a game for a living.

www.facebook.com/instepwithjamie

Take A Seat Let’s face it – they are all grossly overpaid. The same can be said for most rock stars, members of Hollywood’s elite, just about all professional athletes – and even some members of a few more universally respected professions. You know, like lawyers and accountants and Wall Street executives… So yes, I understand the criticism directed at certain members of the baseball world whom fans feel have not pulled their weight, who may not have truly “earned their paycheck” this past season. I wholeheartedly agree. But seriously, do you mean to tell me that if a member of your favorite team went on to win the World Series, this extravagance would somehow be deemed more acceptable? I don’t know what it takes to “earn” $20 million, but I’m pretty sure playing baseball doesn’t qualify regardless of

the outcome of the games. It’s the system as a whole that is unbalanced. And, if we’re being totally candid, I’m willing to bet that there are few among us who would turn down such a lucrative opportunity if it meant a lifetime of financial security. So perhaps we shouldn’t be so quick to judge. I enjoy my entertainment as much as the next person. And yes, when my team puts on such a pathetic showing as they did this past postseason, I am filled with just as much frustration as the next person. But then common sense creeps in… just because someone signed a $20 million check for a player, does not guarantee that they will succeed each and every day. We are all only human, despite how inhuman such sums of money sometimes seem. Let’s all save the hatred for an issue that truly matters.

Dr. Richard Orlandi and his staff at LaserToenailCenter.com offer in-office treatment of toenail fungus with a new revolutionary laser that kills toenail fungus. “The Pinpointe Laser is a major breakthrough in the treatment of toenail fungus. It is the newest and most effective FDA-approved treatment for toenail fungus now available to the public,” Dr. Orlandi explained. The Pinpointe Laser has appeared on Good Morning America, Fox News NY, ABC News and The Doctors TV show, All of these videos can be seen on their website, LaserToenailCenter.com. The general public is just becoming aware of this highly effective laser treatment that kills fungus underneath the toenail without pain. “The gentle laser light shines through the toenail, and the infrared light directly kills the fungal organisms. FDA studies started in 2007 reveal that

over 80% of the treated patients grew out normal looking toenails after just one treatment. Patients are extremely happy having this new treatment choice.” Dr. Orlandi continues saying, “The painless treatment requires no anesthesia, usually takes 20 to 30 minutes for all ten toes, has no side effects and uses no harmful UV radiation. Since there is no pain, you can walk out just like you walked in, with no restrictions. Toenail polish and shoes can be worn immediately after treatment. Excellent results are commonly seen following treatment of this condition. Healthy, clear toenails are a general indicator of good health, and there is no need to be embarrassed by unsightly fungal toenails.” For further information, contact Office Manager Arrianne at 631.669.4955.

United States and Puerto Rico to help researchers to better understand the lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer. On Tuesday, November 13th, from 4 to 8 p.m. Mercy will be a local enrollment location at which participants can join the study. Those taking part will be asked to read and sign an informed consent form; complete a brief survey; have their waist circumference measured; and give a small blood sample. Prior to the onsite enrollment, individuals will complete an online comprehensive survey that asks for information on lifestyle, behavioral, and other factors related to their health. Those interested in participating can preregister on line at: www.cps3LongIsland.org. Participants will receive

follow-up surveys to complete every few years. Researchers will use the data from CPS-3 to build on evidence from earlier American Cancer Society studies that played a major role in understanding cancer prevention and risk, and have contributed significantly to the scientific basis and development of public health guidelines and recommendations. For further information about enrolling at Mercy, call 516.62.MERCY.

Nassau County Museum of Art’s Benefactors Dinner is always one of the most elegant in the museum’s annual calendar. This year’s event, on Saturday, November 3rd, will be even more special because the guest of honor is Bella Meyer, the granddaughter of Marc Chagall whose works are currently on view in an exhibition that has been a smash hit with arts writers and museum visitors alike. Meyer, the owner and founder of FleursBELLA, will present the benefactors group with a talk on “Flowers in Chagall’s Art”, as well as create floral designs in the galleries inspired by Chagall’s art. Meyer is a skilled floral designer who creates floral arrangements in much the same way that an artist creates paintings. Born in Paris, Meyer holds a Ph.D. in medieval art history from the Sorbonne. Mrs. Periconi explained, “Throughout our country, communities are banding together to organize Cash Mobs to help small, local businesses survive in these tough economic times. Besides offering financial support, these events give residents an opportunity to show a chosen business how important it is to the community. It improves

our quality of life just by being here.” Having notched this first success, the Chamber plans to schedule another “Cash Mob” in the New Year. Here in Bay Shore Schools, with the help of a grant from Donorschoose.org, funded by Capital One Bank, Physical Education teacher Mrs. Balzano and 5th grade teacher Mr. LaRuina have made exercise balls available for a 5th grade class at Gardiner Manor Elementary School. The response from both students and teachers has been extremely positive.

5K Walk & Wheel

More than 600 friends, participants and supporters joined together for the third annual United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Suffolk, Inc. (UCP of Suffolk) 5K Walk & Wheel on Sunday, October 7th at Belmont Lake State Park in West Babylon to support adults and children with disabilities. This noncompetitive event raised more than $87,000 and the funds raised will support the programs and service that UCP of Suffolk provides to 3,500 individuals with disabilities each year. “We decided to do a walk and wheel instead of a race because we wanted to include all of our program participants, friends, family and employees in promoting life without limits for people with disabilities. We are pleased that the event has grown from 100 people to more than 600 over three years. Many individuals

with a disability participated in the Walk & Wheel, some of them have told me that they feel a sense of accomplishment being able to complete the course,” said Stephen H. Friedman, UCP Suffolk President and CEO. “It took me a little over an hour to go around the lake once in my wheelchair. It was like a big reunion because all of my friends from the other UCP residences were walking and wheeling too. We had so much fun and the whole day was really great,” said John, a resident at one of UCP of Suffolk’s 30 residential homes. Some of the wheelers had assistance from volunteer “push buddies” in completing their two laps around Belmont Lake. Others were able to navigate the path on their own. A few people chose to run the path while others strolled. As each person completed the

course, they were met by cheers from a crowd of friends waiting to welcome and congratulate them. Bethpage Federal Credit Union returned as Presenting Sponsor and was joined by Carlin Systems Inc., Estee Lauder Companies, New York Therapy Placement and TD Bank. Special recognition and thanks go to the top five fund raising teams: Team Home Heart, Team Joey Pfundstein, Team DPK, Team Winter and Team Morlock. Together these teams raised a combined total of over $38,000. Everyone was treated to beverages, bagels, fruit, and snacks courtesy of donations from Atkins, Bagel Chalet in Commack, Breaktime Deli & Catering, Big Geyser Inc, Entenmanns, Fireside Caterers in E. Northport, Peter’s Fruit Co., Suffolk Banana Company and Walkers.

Moms Who Kick

Annette Lee, PhD, associate investigator at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, and Iuliana Shapira, MD, director of the Cancer Genetics Program at the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Monter Cancer Center, were honored last night at the Moms Who Kick Inc. Gala Performance 2013 Fitness in Motion at a Garden City Hotel. Drs. Lee and Shapira were honored for their work in breast and ovarian cancer, and more specifically their efforts to discover and validate new biomarkers for early detection, prediction of disease course and outcome, treatment response, and risk of relapse in breast and/or ovarian cancer. Preliminary results of their studies have been presented at a number of national and international meetings. For example, they presented data this

past year at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting, which showed a genetic marker embedded in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), called microRNA, indicates if a patient with ovarian cancer has a benign or cancerous tumor and that she will benefit from chemotherapy after surgery on the tumor. And at the 2012 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting, Drs. Lee and Shapira presented data which showed they discovered a potential explanation for why breast cancer is not experienced the same way with African American and Caucasian patients, and that there are four main subtypes of breast cancer, one of which has distinct similarities to ovarian cancer. Their efforts to simultaneously study both breast and ovarian cancer place their research at the

forefront of breast cancer research. Moms Who Kick has pledged a portion of the 2013 calendar campaign to benefit the research conducted by Drs. Lee and Shapira. Moms Who Kick is a 501(c)(3) Public Charity dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research and to support women’s health. Their annual gala is held to celebrate breast cancer survivors and women affected by cancer. Featuring fit and active moms, many who are breast cancer survivors, along with their bios, cancer awareness tips and tributes, the Moms Who Kick annual calendar was unveiled at the gala. The moms who are featured in the calendar also participated in a fashion show. The event also included a cocktail hour with open bar, seated dinner, dessert, raffle, door prizes, an auction and dancing.
