Happy Thanksgiving from DeLisa Law Group, PLLC Hug your Children and Kiss your Wife. Be Thankful! A Home and Possessions can be replaced. Hurricane Sandy has changed the physical attributes of Long Island and has unfortunately FOREVER changed the value of our homes. The Extreme Weather events Hurricane Irene of 2011 and Super Storm Sandy of 2012 only differed in magnitude due to the Moon Tide. These events will continue more often in the future according to the National Weather Center. Our Government’s and Home Owners need to rebuild and fortify the waterfront to try and reduce the devastation from future storms. Call the “BullDogs” Today at 631-661-1100 for a Free Consultation if: • Your home is uninhabitable and you have a mortgage. • The Storm has made the value of your home less than your mortgage. • You believe that “No One” would want to buy a Home in your area due to flooding. • You are “Struggling” and cannot pay your mortgage and also pay for alternate housing. • Your Insurance proceeds are inadequate to repair and restore your home.

STUFFING THE BUS - On Saturday, October 27th, Bay Shore High School’s 11th Annual “Stuff-a-Bus” Food Drive collected food for people in need within the community. Every holiday season, Bay Shore High School Student Council and Service Honor Society members, under the guidance of Ms. Jackie Side, stuff a bus until it is full with necessary food items to be put in Thanksgiving baskets for needy community members. Special thanks go out to Suffolk Transportation for donating a bus to be used for this worthwhile cause and to all the students, parents, staff members and community residents who donated food. Thanks to their efforts, Thanksgiving baskets will be provided for at least 50 local families this year. Photo by: Dawn Vallone

With homes and businesses destroyed, a gasoline shortage plus some people still without power and heat nine days after Hurricane Sandy, many New York soccer leagues have cancelled games for the foreseeable future. The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) and Region I, both under the umbrella of the United States Youth Soccer Association, are providing relief to soccer clubs and leagues adversely affected by the hurricane. Region 1 is offering up to $2,000 in grants and ENYYSA will match every grant approved by Region I. Applications must be returned to the ENYYSA office at 53 North Park Avenue, Suite 103, Rockville Centre, NY 11570, prior to the Region I, December 15th deadline. Thankful This holiday season, it seems especially appropriate to reflect on those things we are thankful for, individually and collectively. Considering all that most of us have been through – and continue to go through – over the last month, I believe most of us have found a new appreciation for those things formerly taken for granted. For one, if you are fortunate enough to spend this Thanksgiving holiday with your family, friends and loved ones, consider yourself ahead of the game. Sure, you may have to forgo the traditional turkey dinner at home, but was the holiday ever truly about the food to begin with?
Perhaps, for some. Food, coupled with football and Black Friday shopping, right? Well this year, it is about something else, something far more important to the big picture. Togetherness. Compassion. Charity. That sense of fulfillment that only comes from these qualities… if only it didn’t take natural disasters and national tragedies to bring this sort of behavior out. I suppose the better part of human nature is always there, just below the surface, pushed aside by the daily monotony of life’s obligations. But to see it on display… that’s something the likes of which we don’t witness nearly often enough. This Thanksgiving – and
Christmas, while we’re at it – the emphasis should be on the people we choose to celebrate with. The rest is material – the food, the gifts, the decorations – and can be modified on the fly. But the people… they cannot be replaced. We have all lost a lot over this last month; at the very least, a sense of security and complacency. Maybe this isn’t a bad thing. Perhaps it is a reminder that we should never take things for granted, and should always be moving forward. You simply never know when things will come to a grinding standstill. Let’s all enjoy the moments and the memories this holiday season. Absorb each and every one and savor them. Happy Thanksgiving.

On October 23rd, Bay Shore Schools Director of Nutritional Services Janet Sklar hosted her 2nd Annual Farm To School event at both the Bay Shore Middle School and the Mary G. Clarkson Elementary School. Last year, Mrs. Sklar’s “Farm to School: No Small Potatoes!” event celebrated her successful crusade to bring local “Bsize mini-potatoes” from Long Island's East End into Bay Shore Schools cafeterias. The program and event provided a model for other school districts to follow and earned Mrs. Sklar numerous awards.
time that they had ever eaten cauliflower or broccoli or seen a whole roasted potato. The event tied in perfectly with the Nutrition and Food Preparation unit that students are completing in class, where they not only learn about nutritious eating, but also complete healthy food labs. In addition, students are also learning about the importance and benefits of consuming locally grown produce. In the afternoon, the event moved to Mary G. Clarkson Elementary School where the students there devoured farm fresh, local apples and baked apple crisp. Many thanks to all those who helped to make the 2nd Farm To School Event such a success: Bob Lewis (NYS Agriculture & Markets), Diane Shulman (Jerry Shulman Finest Produce), Erin Thorensen (Sustainable Long Island), Chelsey Simpson (National Farm to School), Sunny Suchdeve (Senator Gillibrand’s Long Island

Dear Readers,
The following Town Shelters and Rescues are reaching out for the community’s help...
From Bulldog Rescue: Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many of our volunteers have been left without power, evacuated from their homes and tending to getting their own affairs in order. We are in great need of foster homes in New Jersey, Long Island and surrounding areas. This means that if you genuinely want to help a Bulldog who has no where else to turn, we will cover all approved medical expenses and will provide a MCM Rottweiler Rescue crate if needed. If you would like to volunteer to foster, please contact: www.mcmrottweilerrescue.petfinder.com Bulldogrescue1@aol.com. We don’t want to turn away a rescue, and we don’t want to see them end up on the street or in the shelters. It’s snowing as I write this and, like many of you, I haven’t had electricity for ten days now. I’m wearing multiple layers of clothing and gloves, and it feels as if I’ll never be able to get warm again. But I need to reach out to you because our friends, our neighbors and our community needs our assistance.
placed. Some are waiting for the power to be turned back on; others need to rebuild. These people are living with friends and in shelters. One of their serious concerns is their beloved pets. What we’re trying to organize is a list of people available to help, one family at a time. If you can open your home temporarily to a dog or cat - not an unknown stray; rather, someone’s pet - for a limited period of time, you would be helping a family in their worst hour. Many of these families just have nowhere to take their pets while they get themselves back together. With that in mind, please e-mail me if you are able to assist. If you can take someone’s pet, let me know exactly what your requirements are... Dog or cat? Size? Male or female? Friendly with other pets or kids? How long you can foster? If you can’t take in a pet but can help in some other way (maybe transport?), please let me know. And finally, if you have any ideas on how to make this endeavor work and want to help organize it, please let me know. We will take all the help we can get.
Little Shelter: Readers, the Little Shelter in Huntington has been devastated by the storm. Eighteen trees are down and Kennel Two is destroyed. Thank heavens none of the dogs were hurt. Little Shelter is in desperate need of immediate donations (large or small) in order to rebuild and continue their wonderful rescue work and community outreach programs. Call 631.368.8770 or visit little www.shelter.com to make a donation. Do you have a Hurricane Sandy story you’d like to share? Long or short, furry or feathered, happy or sad - please send them to me for publication. Please be safe and warm, visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting....

Teachers Of Excellence
Congratulations to Bay Shore Middle School English Teacher Amanda Fraggetta and Bay Shore High School English teacher Dan Sullivan, both of whom were honored as New York State English Council (NYSEC) Teachers of Excellence on October 19th in Albany.
NYSEC’s programs and awards provide opportunities for professional leadership, promote excellence in English Language Arts education, and foster collegiality and camaraderie among ELA educators throughout New York State.
Teacher of Excellence awards are presented annually to exemplary ELA educators, nominated by colleagues, who inspire excellence in both their students and peers. Congratulations to Mr. Sullivan and Ms. Fraggetta on receiving this prestigious award.
CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTION - Staff and volunteers from Island Harvest and members of the Bay Shore Fire Department recently distributed needed food to approximately 100 residents victimized by Hurricane Sandy.

Educator Of The Month
Congratulations to Mr. Jonathan P. Nelson, English Teacher and I n t e r n a t i o n a l
Baccalaureate Diploma Program Coordinator at Bay Shore High School, on being selected as a 2012-2013 Dowling College/News12 Long Island Educator of the Month. A photo and video shoot featuring Mr. Nelson and his students will soon air on News 12 that highlights Mr. Nelson’s accomplishments, his students and Bay Shore High School. Presented by
the Dean of Students at Dowling College in partnership with News 12 Long Island, the Educator of the Month program has been highly praised for the focus it places on the best of the many outstanding teachers and educators here on Long Island. Mr. Nelson’s extensive and outstanding attributes and accomplishments have rightly placed him in their distinguished company.
On September 12th, Bay Shore Schools Director of Nutritional Services Janet Sklar attended New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s New York Farm Day in Washington, D.C., having been invited by the senator herself. The event’s agenda included an introduction to “Farm-to-Fork” initiatives aimed at expanding opportunities
for New York’s agricultural industry, discussions on federal funding opportunities for farmers, and an agriculture working group meeting with Senator Gillibrand. Last year, Mrs. Sklar’s Farm To School: No Small Potatoes! event celebrated her successful crusade to bring local produce from Long Island’s East End to
Bay Shore Schools cafeterias. This program and event provided a model for other school districts to follow and earned Mrs. Sklar numerous awards. Congratulations to Mrs. Sklar on being invited to attend such a prestigious event and for representing the Bay Shore School District so well.
teachers, and Bay Shore parents. Over the past five years, the girls have raised $6,305 for this worthy cause. At the event, the girls also honored professionals in the Bay Shore School District who have been an inspiration to them and made a difference in their lives. Honorees included Dave Mayo, Stuart Love,
Mark Spruyt, Katie Kelly, Janine Mazzie, Matt Horsley, Andrea Inganamorte, Brian Nava, Michael Sanesky, Christina Mayott, Georgina Bonavita, William Eggert, and Robin Maloney. A special thank you to all those who made this event so memorable.
Digging Deep On Friday, October 12th, the Bay Shore Girls Volleyball program, under the guidance of Coach Stasia DeBonis, hosted its 5th Annual Dig Pink Volleyball Match, raising $1,200 for breast cancer research. The team was overwhelmed by the generosity and support shown by local businesses,
International Coordinator, had seen our school profile on the IBO website listing IB World Schools and thought Bay Shore would make a good match.” The next two years involved frequent online discussions, visits from Denmark to Bay Shore, and the necessary approval from the Board of Education before finally, on October 8th, Sct. Knuds students arrived. To Mr. Nelson, the educational goals of the program were clear. “One of the primary goals of the IB diploma program is to create a spirit of international mindedness in our students. The stated mission of the IB organization is to promote peace through i n t e r n a t i o n a l understanding and a respect for the variety of cultures that exist in the world. Ironically, although the exchange program is geared toward raising global awareness, the interaction between students of different cultures actually helps students learn as much, if not more, about their own culture and identity.” Danish teacher and director
Jette Hoej-Larsen also wrote about the power of the exchange in one of her emails. “Visiting another culture and making friends from another continent will inevitably broaden our students' horizons and sharpen their awareness of living in a global village.” Some of the highlights of the exchange included Danish students and their hosts visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see its collection of American masterpieces and IB Science teacher Mrs. Donna Watson leading an intercultural lesson on e n v i r o n m e n t a l sustainability in which students compared Danish and American lifestyles to understand how culture and geography affect attitudes toward the environment. On the last day of the exchange, Ms. Nell Kalter, the IB Film teacher, led a film symposium exploring the psychology of fear and how filmmakers draw on our collective nightmares to create one of the most popular film genres. Throughout the morning, Danish and American students analyzed classic horror films of the last fifty
years to learn the conventions of horror and consider whether or not images of fear and anxiety transcend culture and nationality to reach a universal audience. Teachers, parents and students alike were moved by the power of this exchange. IB English teacher and 2012 New York State Teacher of Excellence Dan Sullivan said, “This is the kind of experience that I will remember and cherish forever. The exchange project has energized me personally and
professionally.” As they prepared for their return to Denmark, Ms. Hoej-Larsen said, “We had the most wonderful experience in Bay Shore, learned so much about the American school culture and formed many friendships. So many helpful and warm people from the school community made our stay a sheer pleasure.” When asked for his evaluation of the exchange, Mr. Nelson said, “It was an unqualified success on so many levels. What surprised me the most was
SOUTH BAY SHORE EDITION - SOUTH BAY’S NEWS - WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 21, 2012
Recently, twenty students and two teachers from Sct. Knuds Gymnasium, an upper secondary school in Odense, Denmark, arrived in Bay Shore for six days to take part in an IB ( I n t e r n a t i o n a l Baccalaureate) Program Student Exchange. Sct. Knuds Gymnasium is a magnet school in Denmark for students interested in studying an advanced liberal arts curriculum with an international focus. Twenty Bay Shore High School IB students hosted the twenty Danish students, while the Danish teachers stayed with Bay Shore IB faculty. Marylee Ilchuk, parent of a Bay Shore IB student and host of Danish student Emilie Meyer, said of the exchange, “It was the best educational experience for our entire family since our children have been in school.” Jon Nelson, Bay Shore Schools IB Coordinator, explained the genesis of the exchange, stating, “In June of 2010, we received an email inquiry from a school in Denmark about starting an international project. the intensity of the emotional bonds that can develop in such a short time between people of different cultures and nationalities. I look forward to renewing our friendships when we go to Denmark next spring and deepening our understanding of Danish culture and history.” The Bay Shore host students are also eager to complete the exchange when they visit Denmark for 10 days in late March/early April of 2013.
QUARTERFINAL WIN - On Saturday, November 10th, the Bay Shore Girls’ Varsity Field Hockey team, under the guidance of coaches Ms. Mary Drago and Ms. Amy Lillis, pulled off a stunning 4-0 playoff quarterfinal win against Lindenhurst. More important than Bay Shore's playoff victory, however, was how the team came together to donate clothing and food to their Lindenhurst sister teammates, many of whom lost their homes or belongings due to Hurricane Sandy. A special thank you to Mrs. Harney for organizing this important fundraiser and congratulations to the team and their coaches.

Selfless Act John Tsunis of the Holiday Inn Express of Stony Brook has had rooms booked to capacity due to Hurricane Sandy. Thousands of local residents with out electricity and visiting utility workers from across the United States have flooded the local Long Island hospitality industry looking for
temporary shelter. Dozens of visiting electrical workers from across the southern portion of the United States that work for National Grid Energy have provided an act of kindness. They gave up hotel rooms at the Holiday Inn Express so the Rider University Womens basket ball team could play at
Stony Brook University. Rider University is located in Lawrenceville, New Jersey The game would have been canceled due a lack of accommodations. The southern contracted utility workers slept in sleeping bags in the main ball room of the hotel so the game would go on. The Stony Brook University Sea Wolves

Holiday Help Island Harvest is partnering with Panera Bread to help those hit hard by Hurricane Sandy and Long Islanders who are hungry. With the holidays almost upon us, Panera Bread will serve as a designated drop-off site for Island Harvest’s annual Turkey & Trimmings Collection Campaign, a lifeline for many families in need in the aftermath of Sandy and for hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders who struggle to put food on the table. To lend a helping hand this holiday season, Panera Bread is asking its neighbors to donate frozen turkeys,
supermarket turkey coupons and nonperishable food items at any of its 22 Long Island bakery-cafes on or before December 24th. According to Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest, nearly 300,000 Long Islanders, including 110,000 children struggle with food insecurity. That’s 1 out of every 10 Long Islanders and with the recent devastation those numbers have grown. “Donations of frozen turkeys, turkey coupons and non-perishable food items will be welcomed at our bakery-cafes in Nassau
and Suffolk now through December 24th, and can be dropped off as early as 7 a.m. until 9 p.m.,” says Greg George, Vice President of Operations for Panera Bread on Long Island. “These donations will help Island Harvest provide warm, nutritious meals to local families in need throughout the holidays.” Also, guests who wish to make a monetary contribution to help support Island Harvest’s efforts in the aftermath of Sandy, can do so in amounts of $1 or more at the register.
basketball team were grateful for the generosity bestowed to the local three village community of Long Island. Thousands of residents and fans of the team would have been sad if there was no game. According to Mr. Tsunis,
“During a crisis like Hurricane Sandy, it’s great to see people working together to make a difference. The Stony Brook University Athletic programs have provided a night of entertainment and family fun for those
that have no heat or electricity in the local community. I commend the visiting electrical workers for making a sacrifice so the game could go on.’’
Vet-Connect Vet Connect – a webbased initiative to raise awareness about the employment, health, and resource needs of veterans on Long Island, particularly returning veterans – is live today, just in time for Veteran’s Day. This public awareness initiative is the work of the NassauSuffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) and its member hospitals. NSHC is the association that represents these hospitals on a variety of hospital and health care legislative and regulatory issues. The initiative underscores hospitals’ recognition of the extraordinary service veterans have made to this country and hospitals’ commitment to assisting veterans with their
employment and health care needs. Vet Connect is being coordinated by NSHC’s Communications Committee and hospital human resource directors. Vet Connect can be accessed via NSHC’s home page at www.nshc.org. Once users click on the Vet Connect icon, they are brought to interior pages that provide direct links to hospitals’ job banks, military skills translation assistance, and health care career training programs for veterans. The service is also accessible via hospitals’ websites. Look for the Vet Connect logo. “Our hospitals recognize the extraordinary service our veterans have made to our country,” said Kevin Dahill, president/CEO of NSNC. “All of our
hospitals are committed to assisting veterans with their employment and health care needs. Vet Connect is a simple to use, one-stop resource for veterans that puts helpful information at their fingertips.” Phil Moschitta, director of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Northport, says a service like this is needed now more than ever. “It’s so reassuring to have the support of hospitals and health care leaders from across Long Island. Our veterans made great sacrifices to serve our nation and their high ideals to commitment and honor make them exemplary employees,” said Moschitta.
