I used to be one of those people who avoided shopping like the plague. And Black Friday shopping? Well, that was an event reserved exclusively for those truly insane individuals hell bent on camping out for some amazing sale or another. Not me. Not ever. And yet… Last year was my first venture into the madness. Considering I hate shopping in general, crowds even more, and don’t even bother to compose a Christmas list until the first week of December – I
would say I handled it pretty well. Great sales, manageable crowds = many purchases for moi. This year, what with the aftermath of the storm and a general lack of festiveness, Christmas shopping was among the last things on my mind. But then I thought – retail therapy…couldn’t hurt, could it? Nothing brings a smile to most peoples’ faces like new “stuff,” whether desperately needed or not. Sure it’s frivolous. Unnecessary even. But who cares? At a certain point, we owe it to ourselves to do whatever it is that brings us pleasure
and takes our mind off the more serious issues at hand. All the problems will still be there come morning, believe me. No sense dwelling on reality. Rather, try your best to turn any negatives into positives whenever possible. Idealistic? Sure. But the holidays are a time for idealism if ever there was one. A time for making wishes and hoping they come true, for starting over and for appreciating everyone and everything just a little bit more... And if shopping helps accomplish even one of these tasks, then so be it. Retail therapy it is!

cleaning supplies, blankets, water, diapers and baby formula. In this process, The Rotary Club of Bay Shore was once again helped by volunteers from the newly established Bay Shore High School INTERACT Club as well as many local residents looking to help those in South Bay Shore and Islip who had lost so much.
Then, on Sunday, November 11th, donated items were distributed door to door, based on need, with over 100 families benefitting from the tremendous efforts of all those involved. Special thanks goes out to the six Bay Shore High School INTERACT Club members who volunteered their time, to Fr. David Sellery from St

Hurricane Help Recently, Gardiner Manor School’s Service Honor Society, under the guidance of Advisers Ms. Andrea Nieto and Ms. Linda Tierney, held an emergency drive for families affected by Hurricane Sandy. The club received an overwhelming response from the Bay Shore community, collecting hundreds of needed items
such as coats, warm clothing, blankets, towels, sheets, cleaning supplies and toiletries. Donations were brought to Helping Hands in West Islip (http://www.freewebs.com /hhinwi/) by wonderful parent volunteers who transported all the items from Gardiner Manor School to the Helping Hands collection center at the American Legion Hall.
Students from the Service Honor Society organized and sorted the clothing donations to make Helping Hands’ distribution process easier. Many thanks to all the students and their families, as well the teachers and community members that made this event possible.
RECORD BREAKING - Bay Shore’s Olivia O’Connor is back on top of the Suffolk County gymnastics world after sitting out her Junior year. The Bay Shore High School Senior recently won the all-around title at the Suffolk Individual Championships at Babylon High School. O’Connor scored a 38.675, breaking Christa Devine's Suffolk record of 38.425, set in 2004. At the competition, Olivia was grouped with some of the best gymnasts in the county. Olivia recently signed a letter of intent with William & Mary College where she will be attending next fall. Congratulations to Olivia, her family and her coaches on this extraordinary win.

STUNNING WIN - On Saturday, November 10th, the Bay Shore Girls’ Varsity Field Hockey team, under the guidance of coaches Ms. Mary Drago and Ms. Amy Lillis, pulled off a stunning 4-0 playoff quarterfinal win against Lindenhurst. More important than Bay Shore’s playoff victory, however, was how the team came together to donate clothing and food to their Lindenhurst sister teammates, many of whom lost their homes or belongings due to Hurricane Sandy. A special thank you to Mrs. Harney for organizing this important fundraiser and congratulations to the team and their coaches.

Everyone was worried the devastation blew our minds The memories were safe but the pictures were left behind Houses were flooded some burned to the ground Trying to save belongings but most precious items could not be found The community came together from every walk of life To help our fellow neighbors try to escape their strife Enemies became friends and new friendships were made The blueprints of new houses are soon going to be laid

While most districts across Long Island have seen their enrollment decrease, Bay Shore Schools’ enrollment has continued to rise, as more and more families see Bay Shore as a beacon of quality education. By approving this proposal, the Bay Shore community has taken steps to ensure that all children have access to Pre-K services, which are so important to future academic success. The Bay Shore community continues to address its ever-changing needs while reaffirming its investment in the school district as the heart of our vibrant and diverse community. Thank you to the Bay Shore community for always supporting our schools.

SOUTH BAY SHORE EDITION - SOUTH BAY’S NEWS - WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 28, 2012
On November 20th, the Bay Shore community voted 562 to 325 (63%) to approve the acquisition and partial redevelopment of the Bay Shore Armory and its 4+ acres on Brentwood Road. This innovative and cost effective referendum authorizes the Bay Shore School District to purchase the Bay Shore Armory for $1 and issue $1 million in Qualified Zone Academy Bonds the district was awarded through federal stimulus funds. The district is now able to use the $1 million in interest-free bonds to renovate one of the two buildings which, with State Education Building Aid, will only cost the district $435,000, payable over the next 15 years. The retrofitted space will be used as a Universal Pre-Kindergarten center

On Sunday, November 18th, Long Island’s educators, treatment professionals, and community members gathered for a celebration of recovery at the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc.’s (LICADD) 23rd Annual Peter Sweisgood Breakfast. This familyfocused event was held at the IBEW Local 25 Hall in
Hauppauge, NY and recognized the personal stories of struggles with addiction, while highlighting the efforts of others who provide them with life-saving support. LICADD honored three individuals whose o u t s t a n d i n g accomplishments have shaped public policy, expanded public awareness, enhanced treatment options, and
enabled Long Island to address its growing drug and alcohol problems. The honorees include Community Champion A. Thomas McLellan, Ph.D. of the Treatment Research Institute (TRI); Treatment Champion Patricia Hincken, LCSW-R, CASAC, CPC, of Zucker Hillside Hospital; and Media Champion Ronald J. Scaglia of Anton Community Newspapers.
LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds described the event, “It's important that we take the time to honor those who are championing recovery and take some time to celebrate our victories as we gear up for the challenges that lie ahead. LICADD's five decades of rich history was on display yesterday, as was our resolve for a strong and

Celebrating Recovery active future.” Across Long Island, families are dealing with the devastating effects of untreated addiction. Their painful stories create the momentum needed to push life-saving legislation through our local and state governments. Media Champion Mr. Scaglia is the Editor of Special Sections for Anton Community Newspapers, and his coverage of the drug crisis on Long Island has helped raise awareness, especially among parents of teens who are at risk for substance abuse. As the CEO and CoFounder of the Treatment Research Institute (TRI), Community Champion Dr. McLellan has a long history of leadership in the field of substance abuse, and his research has shaped policy on each level of the public sphere. From 2009 to 2010, Dr. McLellan was the Science Advisor and Deputy Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), a congressionally confirmed
Presidential appointment to help shape the nation’s public policy approach to illicit drug use. At ONDCP, Dr. McLellan worked on a broad range of drug issues, including the formulation and implementation of the President’s National Drug Control Strategy and promotion of drug treatment through the broader redesigning of the national health care system. For over thirty years, Treatment Champion Patricia Hincken, LCSWR, CASAC, CPP has advocated for and expanded the services that are available for Long Island’s chemically dependent citizens. Ms. Hincken currently serves as the Director of Addiction Recovery Services at Zucker Hillside Hospital. Having dedicated her career to studying addiction and providing treatment, she says she is “continually inspired by staff and patients, and finds the journey through addiction and recovery remarkable.”
Tree Lighting Set The Council of Leagues of Mercy Medical Center invites the community to join in the Annual Christmas Tree of Lights Celebration on Tuesday, December 11th at 7 p.m. The ceremony provides the opportunity to recall the need to grow stronger together in our search for peace, with the Tree of Lights representing a beacon of hope and unity in our fragmented world. The blessing and lighting of the Christmas tree will take place in front of the hospital, followed by refreshments served in the Main Lobby. Mercy’s Christmas tree lighting is an annual fundraiser that this year will support the Sister Mary Grace Education Fund that provides scholarships
for students in financial need who are studying for careers in health care. Lights can purchased for the Christmas tree in memory of a loved one, in celebration of a special event, or in honor of a special person, with remembrances recorded in a Tree of Lights book that will be displayed in the hospital’s main lobby during the Christmas season. A special mass will be held at 12 noon in the hospital chapel on Tuesday, January 8th, 2013 for all those remembered in the Tree of Lights. To purchasing a memorial light or for information about the Mass, please call the League Office at 516.705.1833.

Marrow Drive A Success
More than 800 Stony Brook University students, faculty and other individuals participated in a Bone Marrow Registry Drive on November 14th to help those with leukemia or lymphoma who are in need a bone marrow transplant to beat their disease. The drive was organized by four Stony Brook University Students, who partnered with DKMS Americas, the world’s largest marrow donor center. The successful drive had been organized by students Derek Cope,
Maggie Knight, Samuel Rosner, and Peter Sheh. They developed a campuswide effort for the drive that included numerous locations for individuals to join the registry – the Student Activities Center and Campus Recreation Center on the University’ main campus; and Stony Brook University Hospital, the Cancer Center, and Health Sciences tower on the Stony Brook Medicine campus. Each day 7,500 people are searching for a match on the National Bone Marrow Registry. Six out
of 10 patients in need of a bone marrow transplant never find a match. Conducting a bone marrow registry drive increases the pool of potential matches nationwide. A simple “swab” on the inside of one’s cheek is the first step to becoming a match for a patient in need of a bone marrow transplant. A total of 841 individuals – a majority of them Stony Brook University students – were swabbed during the drive.
