This is a huge asset to our department, allowing us to provide the very best in emergency care”. Already, within a month of being put in service 3-24-1 has proven itself to be a necessity. It was an essential part of our team during Superstorm Sandy and has been used during numerous structure fires. In addition to holding ample medical
supplies in the event of any Mass Casualty Incident, 3-24-1 is home to our MCI Tent, Decontamination Holdings and Air Conditioner-Heater Unit, which has been utilized a number of times this year; both on scenes and for standby events. An official wash down was completed Saturday, November 24th with assistance from Bay Shore Fire Department.
BSBRA is extremely excited and proud to take delivery of this vehicle and look forward to having it as part of our fleet. The department would like to specifically thank Chief Gerald Guszack and Christopher Guszack for their dedicated assistance and hard work in the purchase, design and insight of this vehicle. Bay Shore – Brightwaters Rescue
Ambulance, Inc. has been providing Emergency Medical Services to the residents of Bay Shore, Brightwaters and West Bay Shore for the past 53 years. Bay Shore Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance answered 4,100 calls for assistance in 2011. For additional information, and information on joining our team, please visit our website at www. BSBRA.org.

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, hosted its Annual Stars Gala & Casino Night on Friday, November 16th at the Woodbury Country Club. DDI not only raised funds for the children and adults it serves, but for its employees as well. In light of recent events with Hurricane Sandy, DDI established a special relief fund to benefit any employee who lost their home or are facing extreme economic hardship due to storm. “DDI is very grateful to our Foundation Board of Directors, corporations, parents, teachers, staff, friends and volunteers who helped make this event a special and memorable evening,” stated John Lessard, DDI Executive Director. I am especially grateful that a portion of the proceeds from this event will be
designated to the DDI Employee Disaster Relief Fund, which has been established to help a number of our staff members who faced catastrophic losses due to Hurricane Sandy. Their homes were significantly damaged or destroyed, their cars were ruined, and their lives were turned upside down. Yet, despite the adversity, each and every one of our staff members collectively insured that all of the children and adults with disabilities entrusted to our care were kept safe and out of harm's way. We are very grateful for their dedication and hope to be able to offer any assistance that we can.” The annual Gala featured two special award presentations. The 2012 Stars Advocacy Award was presented to Julian Fisher of Gallagher Benefit Services. Over the past decade, Julian, along with his wife, June, has worked tirelessly to raise funds in
The 30th Annual James A. Cullen Memorial Golf Outing held by King Kullen Grocery Company successfully raised over $100,000 for Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York. The not-for-profit organization finds adoptive and foster homes for children on Long Island and in New York City. During the presentation of the check to Little Flower Children and Family Services, King Kullen Co-President Brian Cullen stated, “For 30 years, the King Kullen family has been proud and honored to support Little Flower through the James
A. Cullen Memorial Golf Outing. We hope to share the value and strength we find as a family-run business and believe Little Flower Children and Family Services demonstrates this daily through the care of children and those in need.” King Kullen has raised over $3 million for Little Flower since the inaugural golf outing in 1983. Further, members of the Cullen family are personally involved and have actively supported many programs as well as the construction of the eight cottages that provide a residential setting for
more than 100 children and teenagers at Little Flower’s Wading River, New York, location. “We have been able to care for children of all ages at our residences as well as place children in homes with caring parents because of the leadership support of King Kullen and its close circle of family and friends,” said Little Flower Executive Director Grace LoGrande. “Their stewardship has meant that even in a challenging economy, the annual golf outing remains a great success one that directly benefits the children of Little Flower.”
support of the many programs and services DDI provides to children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. DDI was also pleased to honor students who have been active participants in the school age vocational services in the Children’s Day Program. For three or more years, these students have participated in community based volunteer activities, which are meant to help the students prepare for future employment opportunities, increased socialization experiences, and the ability to lead productive and satisfying lives in adulthood. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As a result of my daily commute having been recently increased from 15 minutes to anywhere from 45 minutes (on a good day) to… oh, let’s say an hour plus on a normal morning during rush hour, I have had the overwhelming privilege to observe the shenanigans of one of our favorites: the fellow motorist. And here I thought residential, stop-and-go driving was bad. To be clear, there is a certain nuance to the pleasure of trailing behind a line of school buses, to the point that you manage to hit every single stop sign and traffic light within a five-mile stretch. And let’s not forget the classic inching forward while reading street signs – oh wait, I wanted to turn three blocks back…let’s just throw the car in reverse, why don’t we.
But that’s nothing compared to highway and parkway driving. Head out to the open roads, and it’s a whole new ballgame. There are those who feel the need to merge at speeds approaching 70 miles per hour, all the while paying no attention to the speed you may be approaching at. Make way, because they’re coming regardless! Then there are the people who seem to have an aversion to using that shoulder portion leading up to an exit ramp, instead preferring to come to a screeching halt right in their lane – your lane – as they contemplate whether this is really where they need to get off. Umm… drive much? Oh, but let’s not forget my favorite – those who make a habit of driving at night with their brights on, blinding all those in front of them with
their hi-beam glow. Are you afraid of the dark? Is that the issue? Are the dozens of streetlights and headlights from your fellow motorists simply not enough to guide the way? Perhaps nighttime driving is not for you. We all do stupid things from time to time. Whether from distraction or a momentary lapse in judgement, these things happen. But when you are operating a piece of machinery capable of taking another human life, perhaps we should do our best to keep these idiotic idiosyncrasies to a minimum. Pay attention, put the phone away, save your makeup application, shaving and hairstyling for another time… oh, and when the sign says “Lane Ends,” believe it. Sincerely, Your Fellow Driver

Tiana Christoforidis, and students from Fifth Avenue School, under the direction of Ms. Bertolino. In keeping with the Bay Shore Chamber of Commerce’s holiday theme of Jingle Bells ringing throughout Bay Shore, bells were distributed to all children in attendance before being hung on the tree for all to see. Another highlight for the children was when the Fifth Avenue Fire Department brought Santa and Frosty to the event and distributed candy canes and gelt to everyone. Lastly, this year's tree and menorah lighting honorees were John, Gail, Deirdre, Erin and Karen Wahlberg. John does a great deal of volunteer work for the Bay Shore community, including all the electrical work at the Reflection Garden, and serves as a Bay Shore Chamber of Commerce board member. His daughter Deirdre volunteers for Light the Night. Bel Pagdanganan, Bill Ryan and Terri Kelly, all representatives from National Grid, were also honored for being true partners in Bay Shore's revitalization.
teacher and esteemed Girls’ Varsity Track Coach Mr. Steve Borbet) is a painter and collage artist with a studio in downtown Manhattan. He created a workshop for the students about the aim of his work and students learned about Jason’s work process and implemented hands-on collage technique by creating their own college pieces
under his leadership. This was a unique opportunity for students to work alongside a professional artist while creating their own original works of art. Many thanks to the Art Honor Society and the Bay Shore Schools Arts and Education Fund (BSSAEF) for sponsoring this valuable in-school field trip.

Tri-ing For Kids
On Thanksgiving morning, over 600 participants showed up to run and support the annual Tri-ing for Kids Turkey Trot 5K in Bay Shore-Brightwaters. The race was sponsored by Triing for Kids!! (TFK) supporting the Michael Racanelli Forever Young Foundation (MRFY). Tri-ing For Kids is a 501C3 not for profit organization comprised of individuals inspired to complete endurance events for a cause greater than a medal. TFK provides financial support for sick and injured
children and charitable causes which fit within its m i s s i o n . (http://www.triingforkids. org) The Michael Racanelli Forever Young Foundation's mission is to help young people in the many communities Michael Racanelli, ‘09, was blessed to be a part of. (http://racanellifoundatio n.com/) Over $12,500 was raised for the MRFY Foundation this past Thanksgiving morning and, since 2006, TFK has donated over $750,000 to local children’s hospitals and
charities. Paolo Fiore was the overall winner with an impressive time of 16:13, followed by Matt Connors at 17:59. The first female finisher was Nadine Moors with a time of 19:58. However, as Doug Rabin, founder of TFK, stated, "MRFY, all the families and everyone who ran today were winners!!" The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office was honored by all 18 members of the Suffolk County Legislature at today’s general meeting in Hauppauge. The tribute was in recognition of the Sheriff’s Office recent accreditation by the New York State Law E n f o r c e m e n t Accreditation Council. The New York State Law E n f o r c e m e n t Accreditation Program (NYSLEAP) is a rigorous review process that
formally recognizes agencies which meet or exceed 133 quality accreditation standards. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is among one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the State to be granted the accreditation. During today’s ceremony in Hauppauge, Sheriff DeMarco thanked the County Legislature for recognizing the significance of the achievement, and added, “our deputy sheriffs and
civilian staff are among the most talented and respected law enforcement professionals in the State and, and to be recognized by all 18 members of the County Legislature is a special honor. Of the more than 520 law enforcement organizations in the State of New York, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is one of only 143 agencies to have achieved this level of accreditation.
