I hate learning new things. I do. Sure, it’s great to broaden your horizons and add skills to your repertoire, but the actual learning process? Not so much fun. I prefer to fast forward to the part where I miraculously become highly proficient at something (which sometimes never happens) rather than muddle for too long in the learning curve portion. The funny part is that, with most things, once this “curve” has been navigated, you often realize that the new thing you were so

hesitant to take on wasn’t so bad in the first place. Simple, even. Just took a little getting used to, was all. Over time, we seem to be able to adapt to anything. Think about it. Look back on all your years in school… weren’t you nervous the first time being tested on a particular subject? Didn’t you get butterflies the morning of a big presentation? Wasn’t your initial reaction to any massive projects to immediately push them to the back of your mind and procrastinate? New = Frightening then, and it still does, to some extent, now.

They often say you should try one new thing each and every day – whether something as simple as tasting a new food, reading a new book or buying a new pair of jeans…right on up to the more monumental decisions of whether to search for a new job or buy a new house or travel the world. New = Exciting. It signifies growth, maturity, experience – all those things associated with moving onward and upward. Sometimes, all it takes is a little help navigating the curve to ultimately see the path for what it is – a straight line to improvement.

Hurricane Christmas Party
didn’t have to worry thanks to St. Joseph Hospital located in Bethpage. “We wanted to do something special for children this year,” said St. Joseph Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer Drew Pallas. “Our staff collected toys and we had Santa, Mrs. Claus, the Snow Queen and Santa’s elves deliver gifts and hosted a party at the
parish to brighten the kids’ holiday.” The event was held Tuesday, December 18 and more than 100 children turned out for the heartwarming event. Some children asked Santa for a new home, because their homes had been destroyed by the storm. All left with toys, candy canes, a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Clause and stomachs full of hot chocolate, cupcakes and candy.

Grants Awarded A big local and national news story of 2012 was Hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic Ocean hurricane on record, which created unprecedented destruction in New York and New Jersey in lost lives and property. Youth soccer organizations affiliated with the U.S. Youth Soccer have responded. Region 1 established a Disaster Relief Grant Program for Region 1 clubs/organizations that have suffered damage as a result of the storm. 20 grants, each up to $2,000, are being awarded. On the way to a total donation of $80,000, the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) has given $46,000 in checks to its needy clubs. The money

The East Hudson Youth Soccer League (EHYSL) was not as affected by Hurricane Sandy as its downstate neighbors so they have graciously donated $4,000 to the SIYSL and $2,000 to the LIJSL. While all these good works continue, a for-profit company, SportsSignup in Saratoga Springs, made a $10,000 donation last month to ENYYSA leagues most affected by Hurricane Sandy. The CJSL, SIYSL and LIJSL each received $3,333. Perserverance In the realm of ideas, everything depends on enthusiasm; in the real world, all rests on perseverance. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Their wonderful color also makes them perfect for grilling, charbroiling and roasting. • White onions are commonly used in Mexican, Southwest and BBQ dishes. They are also
used in sauces and potato and pasta salads. When sautéed, they turn a golden color and have a mild flavor. The Long Island Housing Partnership, Inc. (LIHP) is pleased to announce the receipt of the generous donation of $200,000 from the Robin Hood Relief Fund. In response to Hurricane Sandy’s devastation, The Robin Hood Foundation, New York City’s largest organization in the fight against poverty, has reactivated the Robin Hood Relief Fund, initially created in response to the September 11th, 2001 attacks. “For 24 years, Robin Hood has been providing
housing, food and care for our neighbors in need throughout New York City, and we’re using that expert knowledge to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy,” said Robin Hood Executive Director David Saltzman in a press release this November. “The money LIHP received will greatly benefit low income families living on Long Island impacted by Hurricane Sandy. The funding will be used to provide repairs from water damages, including heating system repairs, remediation of mold,
sheetrock replacement and paint,” says Kevin Law, Chairman of LIHP. The Robin Hood Relief Fund is providing assistance to organizations throughout New York City and, for the first time, New Jersey, and Long Island. “LIHP is pleased to be working with Robin Hood here on Long Island,” says Peter J. Elkowitz, Jr., President and CEO of LIHP. “We appreciate their support to help families impacted by Sandy get back into their homes.”

In the wake of the destruction of Hurricane Sandy, American Roland Food Corp. has donated 620 cases (approximately 22,000 servings) of canned tropical fruit to Long Island Cares (The Harry Chapin Food Bank). Many of Roland Foods’ employees and partners in the Metro New York area were hit hard by the storm and this donation, in addition to a previous donation to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey immediately after the storm, is part of an effort to give back to the communities that support Roland branded products all year long and to aid in the Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, is pleased to announce that the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) received approval from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid to award the NuHealth System $3.3M in funding to support the Hospital-Medical Home Demonstration Project as part of the most recent extension to the Partnership Plan Section 1115 Waiver. “This is great news for the NuHealth System. This funding will help support the operational and clinical investments required to transform our hospitalbased practices into patient centered medical homes,” said Gianelli. “The purpose of the program is to encourage teaching hospitals to improve coordination, continuity and quality of care for Medicaid beneficiaries by transforming their outpatient primary care sites into high quality patient centered medical homes.” In a recent letter, Jason Helgerson, Medicaid Director in the NYSDOH Office of Health Insurance Programs, indicated “The Department has reviewed and approved your application for participation in this initiative. The estimated award amount for the Demonstration period is $3,324,744, funds that will be distributed on the successful completion and documentation of program milestones. Funding beyond December 2013 is contingent upon the hospital achieving NCQA recognition as a level 2 or 3 Patient Centered Medical Home at all sites participating in the Demonstration.” Gianelli added: “Special thanks to Dr. Steven Walerstein and Robert Yost for doing the necessary work to secure this funding. This latest funding complements the $18M HEAL-NY grant that NuHealth received in early summer, which will fund the construction of brand new outpatient facilities right off the lobby of the Nassau University Medical Center, as well as the $17.5M in transitional rate support which the NYSDOH recently awarded to NuHealth. Once we achieve NCQA medical home status, NuHealth will be entitled to additional per member per month funding to support the investments required to maintain this status.”

Hurricane Christmas Party
Hurricane Sandy ripped through many parts of Long Island devastating houses and people’s lives. Parents struggling to repair their homes, children being bused to other schools, wondered if Santa would be able to find them this Christmas. Boys and girls in the Lindenhurst parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help one of the areas hardest hit by the Super Storm and subsequent nor’easter -
didn’t have to worry thanks to St.

Top Value College Stony Brook University was named the 22nd best value in public colleges and universities for instate students and the 9th best value for out-of-state students for combining “outstanding education with economic value” by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance in its top 100 rankings of public fouryear institutions. Last year, Kiplinger ranked Stony Brook as the 35th best value for in-state and 29th for out-of-state. The rankings are posted on the Kiplinger website and will appear in the February 2013 issue of Kiplinger. According to Kiplinger, Stony Brook is one of the most selective schools on the list with an admission rate of 39 percent. It is also one of only three in Kiplinger’s top 25 best values to charge an outof-state sticker price of less than $30,000 (after need-based aid, the cost for out-of-state students is $22,543). Kiplinger’s assesses quality and affordability according to a number of measurable standards
including competitiveness, graduation rates, academic support, student indebtedness at graduation, cost and financial aid. “It’s always gratifying to be recognized by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance as a best value in public education,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD. “Stony Brook prides itself on delivering the best education at the most affordable price, which is especially important in these difficult economic times. This affordability, together with academic excellence, continues to enhance the value of a Stony Brook degree.” Stony Brook University was also highlighted for its course offerings, 68 majors and 78 minors across 200 academic programs; 98 percent of faculty members possessing either doctoral degrees or the highest degrees in their respective fields; faculty being responsible for more than 1,700 inventions and more than 500 patents; and a 92
percent retention rate for freshman staying on for their sophomore year. “We applaud this year’s top 100 schools for their efforts to maintain academic standards while meeting the financial needs of their students,” said Janet Bodnar, editor of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance. Click here for more in-depth Kiplinger rankings with sortable data by criteria such as state, tuition cost, average debt, student-to-faculty ratio, admission rate and more. The ranking of Stony Brook University as the 22nd best value public college and university for in-state students and ninth for out-of-state students in the nation is the latest in outstanding rankings conferred upon the university by independent organizations, including recent recognition by the U.S. News & World Report as being among the top 100 national universities and the top 40 public universities for 2013.

styles of each student. She works individually with each child to ensure that they are positioned to achieve their goals and gain independence. According to Sherri Glazier, Director of Education/Principal at The Children’s Center, “She is truly an advocate for her students. Ms. Brescia constantly and tirelessly seeks resources and opportunities to give her students real life experiences – such as recycling, money skills, math lessons and teamwork. Skills they will take with them when they graduate from our program. We are very fortunate to have her on our staff.” Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling’s School of Education says, “Long Island is known for having the best teachers in the nation, and we received so many nominations from across Nassau and Suffolk, and are only able to select 12 winners.
Krystin Brescia is truly a remarkable educator as evidenced by her skill, her talents, and the praise she received from parents and co-workers who nominated her.” In her remarks Ms. Brescia said she is rarely at a loss for words, but expressed deep gratitude for being nominated and selected a 2012-2013 Dowling College/News12 Educator of the Year. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Child Study with NYS certification in Early Childhood and Special Education and a Masters Degree in Early Intervention, Early Childhood Special Education from St. Joseph’s College.

5 Boro Bike Tour Bike New York recently announced dates and details for the 2013 TD Five Boro Bike Tour, held Sunday, May 5th, 2013. The Tour will be returning to a “rush” firstcthome, first-serve registration system which will open on Tuesday, January 22nd at 12:00 p.m. EST. Held annually the first Sunday in May, the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is America’s largest cycling event with a 40 mile, traffic-free ride through all five boroughs for 32,000 cyclists. The Tour is co-produced by Bike New York, the city’s premiere bicycling organization, and the New York City Department of Transportation, in association with multiple City of New York departments. Proceeds from the event fund Bike New York’s education program “This annual springtime ritual --which keeps growing in popularity -- is simply the most exciting way to experience the dynamic, diverse neighborhoods in all five boroughs of our great city,” said Ken Podziba, President and CEO of Bike New York. “Bicyclists wait all year to feel the thrill and freedom of riding 40 miles on car-free streets, highways and bridges as they only can in the TD Five Boro Bike Tour.” 2013 TD Five Boro Bike Tour regular registration will be a “rush” registration system, similar to 2011 where the Tour’s first-come, first-serve registration system sold out in less than 24 hours. With the return to a rush system, Bike New York anticipates a similar sellout for the 2013 Tour. TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®, will once again serve as title sponsor. “TD Bank is proud to continue sponsoring the TD Five Boro Bike Tour, the marquee cycling event in New York,” said Chris Giamo, Regional President, TD Bank. “We feel it is important to invest in our communities, and the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is a fun, environmentally friendly way to see the City while experiencing the TD Bank brand.” Those interested in participating in the TD Five Boro Bike Tour will have the opportunity to register starting on January 22 at 12:00 p.m. EST. Adults must register themselves individually. Youth registration will take place in conjunction with an individual adult registration. All youth registrations must maintain a one child to one adult ratio. Participants hoping to ride with friends and family will have the opportunity to link their registrations together after the event sells out. Bike New York has also partnered with onPeak to provide more options for out-of-town visitors to find accommodations with competitive rates at convenient

locations throughout the city. Details to convenient and affordable accommodations will be available during the registration process. Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City Bike New York, in partnership with the Giro d’Italia, is adding a new way to ride the TD Five Boro Bike Tour. This new VIP registration option will give riders the chance to test their limits, with a timed climb up the Verrazano Bridge. In addition, all Giro riders receive an exclusive Italian-made Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City jersey to wear during the event. Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City registration opens on January 22nd at 12:00 p.m. EST. It is only available for riders 18 years of age and older. “We’re excited to partner with the Giro d’Italia and bring two of the world’s largest cycling events together,” said Podziba. More details will be available in the following weeks. “Ride for a Reason” Charity Program Regular registration and the Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City are not the only ways to ride in the 2013 TD Five Boro Bike Tour. Prospective riders can also “Ride for a Reason” and champion one of Bike New York’s 43 charity partners. “Last year’s ‘Ride for a Reason’ charity program was a great success, raising more than $1.1 million for our partner charities,” said Podziba. “Based on last year’s fundraising accomplishment, we’re excited to see this year’s results from our charity partners. Fundraising for a charity is a tremendous way to give back and support a meaningful cause while having the time of your life.” Below is a full list of Bike New York’s charity partners: · Alzheimer’s Association, New York City Chapter · American Liver Foundation · ASPCA · Big Brothers Big Sisters · Broadway Green Alliance · BronxWorks · Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation · CancerCare · Community Access · Cystic Fibrosis Foundation · dance4life · Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) · First Descents · Gilda’s Club New York City · Haiti Hydroelectric, Rotary Club Metro NYC · Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation · Hope for the Warriors

#1 Century 21 Agent In Nassau & Suffolk County For Quality Service
What Your Neighbors Are Saying!! Tom Miller was amazing. He went above and beyond from the first time he looked at the house to the day of closing. He was extremely instrumental in helping me, by recommending and contacting the various contractors. Tom made a project that was overwhelming to me more manageable, quick and painless. Tom is an outstanding agent. Maryann D. The sale of our home was so much more than a business transaction; it was a highly charged emotional roller coaster. There was/is no other person other than Tom Miller who had the qualifications to successfully accompany us on this ride. Tom’s expertise covered the entire process; besides his fine tuned knowledge he carefully and gently calmed the actual closing. I could not have gotten through it without Tom Miller.
Joann R.
Thomas Miller is a top notch professional... he met all our needs and went above and beyond in all aspects of the sale of our home. I would recommend him to all who are looking for a terrific real estate agent.
Jon H.
I was extremely pleased with everything Tom Miller did regarding the sale of my home. He handled every detail efficiently and professionally. He made the entire process much less stressful and I would highly recommend Tom to anyone trying to sell their home. Stephen S. Tom Miller was, without a doubt the best agent anyone could ask for. He was ALWAYS available to answer questions and would do his best to quell my anxieties (a monumental task, I may add!) He was highly professional, personable, trustworthy, extremely knowledgeable, and I always felt he had our best interests at heart. He has my highest recommendation. Karin F. Tom was wonderful to work with... He was able to make one of the more stressful life events as easy and stressless as possible. He was always available to answer questions and help guide me through the entire process of selling a home... He even went beyond what my expectations were to help when it was needed... I would recommend him, to anyone.
