Star and Social Impact. The Long Island Housing Partnership is a Finalist in the Social Impact category. “We are so pleased to be finalists in the Social Impact Category,” says Peter J. Elkowitz, Jr., President and CEO of LIHP. “It is really an honor.” For over 25 years, LIHP has provided housing opportunities and related services to over 20,000 families, stimulating the local economy and creating jobs. In addition to directly addressing the need for affordable housing through construction and renovation, LIHP has sought to educate government and community leaders, resulting in legislation requiring new developments to provide a percentage of affordable housing units, and influencing how the community views affordable housing.
Finalists were chosen by Long Island business professionals during preliminary judging. Members of the Awards’ Distinguished Judges selected the Imagine Awards winners from among the Finalists during final judging. “Being named a Finalist in The Long Island Imagine Awards is an important achievement,” said Ken Cerini, Founder of the Long Island Imagine Awards. “It means that independent business executives have agreed that the nominee is worthy of recognition for their innovation, leadership and sustainability. Congratulations to all of the Finalists on their achievement.” Details about Long Island Imagine Awards and the list of Finalists in all categories are available at http://www. ceriniandassociates.com/ imagine-awards.

Backyard Bird Count The 16th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) is coming February 15th-18th. People of all ages, novice or accomplished bird watchers, are invited to watch birds for fifteen minutes or more on one or more days of the count and enter their tallies at www.birdcount.org. Your tallies will be part of a huge worldwide science project. You can count wherever you are – at home, in schoolyards, at local parks or wildlife refuges. The Great Backyard Bird Count web site has easy directions, checklists for the birds in our local region, a special section for kids, and identification tips, photos, sounds, and maps to help develop bird watching skills. In 2013, scientists predict that U.S. birdwatchers will see and influx of RedBreasted Nuthatches and winter finches, such as Pine Siskins, because of scarce food supplies on their northern wintering grounds.

Keys To Success By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I was recently asked to deliver the keynote address for a High School Journalism Awards Luncheon & Ceremony, to be held at my alma mater, the (formerly known as) C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. Wow. The keynote address. Only nine years removed from college myself, and here I am expected to speak intelligently for 20 minutes to a crowd of (hopefully) eager, bright-eyed high school students about the highs and lows of the Journalism industry, the track of my career, the “war stories” of dealing with 20-something editions of a weekly newspaper and each and every piece of editorial content contained within them… a rather
daunting task. Never the fan of public speaking, my first thought was, 20 minutes?! Of speaking in front of a crowd of complete strangers?! By myself?! ButthenItookadeepbreathand truly considered the prospect… Wow, what an honor to be asked. Imagine how many Journalism students have come and gone through that program over the years… some have probably gone on to achieve amazing success in the field; others may have decided to pursue another career path entirely – all making their own distinct marks. And then there was me, going from the staff of the Charles Street Times in high school, to the staff of the Pioneer in college, to the board of the Press Club of Long
Island…working my way from editorial assistant, to associate editor to managing editor here at South Bay – all while accumulating quite the pile of column clippings. Sure, many have gone on to greater things – and hopefully this is just the beginning of a similarly fruitful career for me – but the most important thing, I feel, is to remember where you started from and the process by which you ultimately achieved your dreams. It all begins with family, is supplemented by schooling and finally becomes cemented with “real world” work experience. All part of the package, all part of the path to success. Now…if only I could manage to expand that philosophy into a 20-minute keynote address!

to file their tax returns. This is another way in which Hempstead Town is helping meet the needs of our citizens,” said Murray. Most VITA sites require that an appointment be made in advance. Participants must bring last year’s tax return (2011), all wage and earning statements (W2 and 1099), all interest dividend and pension statements, 2012 property tax receipts, STAR exemption records, itemized expense records, and social security cards and photo identification of all those filing tax returns. “We have a dedicated group of VITA volunteers poised to provide competent service to seniors and residents with limited incomes during the upcoming tax season. I hope that any senior resident who is interested in having his or her tax return prepared will come to a local VITA site and take advantage of this excellent, free service,” concluded Murray. For a VITA program schedule, senior residents may call the Department of Senior Enrichment at 516.485.8100 or visit the town’s website at www.TOH.
