Employees from various divisions and locations of Catholic Health Services (CHS) and the CHS Continuing Care Division were seeing red on February 1st, as part of National Wear Red Day celebration to benefit the American Heart Association (AHA). National Wear Red Day for Women is a massive national public awareness
day urging women, people from all walks of life, businesses, towns, schools, the media, buildings and landmarks to “go red” and “glow red” to bring attention to the No. 1 killer of females – cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular diseases claim more women’s lives annually than the next five causes of death combined. “The annual American
Heart Association’s National Wear Red Day is an easy, powerful way to speak up and show support for Go Red For Women,” said Alyson Gucciardo, Community Relations Manager. “We want to encourage our employees to take care of their hearts and live healthier lifestyles.” For 10 years, women have been fighting heart
disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. More than 627,000 women’s lives have been saved, but the fight is far from over. Heart disease is still women’s No. 1 killer – it affects more women than men and is more deadly than all forms of cancer combined. The American Heart Association Go Red For Women movement is about turning around these statistics. Go Red For Women invites women to make it their mission to take charge of their heart health through simple lifestyle changes like quitting smoking, eating healthier, exercising more and maintaining a healthy weight. Women can find important health tips at www.goredforwomen.org including online tools and health assessments.

ANOTHER N SUGGESTIOUR FROM O R READE SURVEY!
By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Spring has sprung. That’s it. I’ve decided. One sunny day amid a week of snow and sleet and rain, and it’s official. Enough of this winter wonderland nonsense. Funny, since we have really only had one substantial snowstorm over the course of the last three or so winters; but the one was… well, quite a storm, shall we say. And just like that, all the relatively pleasant winters of the past few years have been forgotten – wiped out from the collective memory. Isn’t that always the way? One season gives way to the
next – and we, as a society, go from complaining about the cold, to whining about the spring rain, to being exhausted by the oppressive heat…and then, oh no, here comes that autumn chill again! One endless cycle of wishing for something other than what we have, only to promptly wish it away as soon as it’s within our grasp. We are a flaky bunch, aren’t we? And to think other societies would give anything to live in a temperate climate such as ours, complete with four seasons – and the occasional natural disaster of course. Seriously, in the last year or
two, we’ve experienced two substantial hurricanes, a blizzard of epic proportions, a minor earthquake…am I forgetting anything else? Dare we ask – what next? Well, what’s next for me is spring. Beautiful, mild, clear and crisp. Spring. My favorite season, when the summer is still looming, everything is blooming and the days take on a renewed, vital energy that has been missing throughout the long winter of hibernation and doldrums. Sure, it may officially be a month or so away – but the mentality is here now. Embrace it.

With all the snow that New York received last weekend, the question on everyone’s mind is, “When does spring begin?” Spring officially arrives on March 20th but most people associate the march toward spring with other events. For baseball fans, spring begins when pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training in Florida and Arizona. To others, it’s when they

hear the chirping of happy birds who have returned from Florida. For New York soccer fans, the first sign of spring is the Long Island Junior Soccer League Convention. one of the world’s largest soccer conventions and promises as always to have something for everyone. 10,000 people are once again expected to flock to the convention from March 8th to 10th at the Huntington Hilton on Route 110 in Melville. The fun begins at 8 p.m. on Friday night, March 8th with the Club Recognition Dinner. The Volunteer of the Year
from each LIJSL club will be honored. Dolores Jose of the Mineola Athletic Association, Mitch Pally of the Stony Brook Soccer Club, Bob Porter of the Cold Spring Harbor/ Huntington Soccer Club and Tom Vollmuth of the East Islip Soccer Club will be inducted into the LIJSL Hall of Fame at the dinner as well. Throughout the day on Saturday, March

Calling all aspiring writers and authors! Meet and mingle with members of LIAWS (Long Island Authors and Writers Society www.LIAWS. org). Members include award-winning authors, bestselling authors, industry professionals and those new to writing. Anyone interested in writing or authors interested in furthering their craft are welcome to stop by and say hello. The newly formed Long Island Authors and Writers
Society is holding the open invitation networking event for current members and those wishing to join LIAWS. It will be held on Wednesday, March 20th, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Melville Marriot, 1350 Walt Whitman Road in Melville. “This is one of the many social events we are planning for LIAWS,” says LIAWS president Tom Gahan. “The writing process can be frustrating. It’s often difficult for writers to meet those in the business face to face.
Formal meetings can also make open conversation difficult. We’re here to support all levels of the written word in fiction and non-fiction.” The March 20th event is free and open to all. Attendance is not necessary to become a member. Membership applications can be downloaded from the LIAWS website www. LIAWS.org. “March 20 at the Melville Marriot is an open-house type of event. People can come and go as they please.
Meet & Greet Kickoff
Saturday at 2:30 p.m. for all interested high school students and their families. Admission to the 31st Annual LIJSL Convention is free. For more information, please contact the LIJSL at 631.648.9020. Big Bird The largest living bird is the ostrich, which can weigh 330 pounds.
We chose a centralized location on Long Island at the beautiful Melville Marriott for our kickoff event,” says LIAWS vice-president Yvonne Capitelli. We will rotate future events around Long Island to make it fair and easy for everyone. I am looking forward to meeting and working with new members.” For more about LIAWS visit www.LIAWS.org or call 631.369.0063.

(NAPSI)-Doing a little homework before you travel could save you time at the airport. For instance, visiting www.TSA.gov, the Transportation Security Administration’s Web site, can help you learn what items can be packed in carry-on and which are best left in checked suitcases. You can also learn size
requirements for toiletries that are allowed on planes and then find properly sized items in stores. As a final tip, remember that all carry-on gels, liquids and aerosols need to be placed in a 1-quart, single zip-top, clear plastic bag. For more information and tips, visit www.shave. com.

Centennial Milestone
Marking the first milestone in its 2013 centennial celebration, Mercy Medical Center has taken special note of the 100th baby delivered at the hospital in its 100th year. Christopher Tabora, weighing in at a mere seven pounds, was born on February 3rd at 5:16 a.m. and cared for in Mercy’s state-of-the-art Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the only facility on the south shore of Nassau County designated by New York State to provide the complex care required for all premature and sick
newborns. Proud mother 28-yearold Wendy Tabora of Hempstead showed-off her new son to senior hospital officials, who presented her with a special gift basket to mark his unique status as the hospital’s 100th newborn in the 100th year after its establishment. “Mother/baby services have had a special place at Mercy throughout our 100 year history,” said Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer Dr. Aaron E. Glatt. “And meeting the unique needs of mothers and their newborns remains at the
core of our mission.” With obstetric, anesthesia, neonatal and pediatric physician specialists on site in its labor and delivery and maternity areas aroundthe-clock, Mercy was ranked as one of New York’s best hospitals in 2012 by U.S. News & World Report, and its amenities for new moms include all private rooms with “rooming in” with their babies, as well as primary nursing care, a lactation specialist, a deluxe gourmet meal to parents before discharge and breastfeeding support groups after discharge.

Teens And The Internet: Tips For Playing It Safe
(NAPSI)-It’s easy for teens to pretend they’re older than they are online, but it doesn’t mean they’re ready for anything the Internet can tharow at them. By monitoring and engaging teens about their online activity, parents can help them exercise selfcontrol, report problems— and make smarter, safer decisions. Even the best kids from the most loving families take risks and get carried away when socializing or gossiping with friends— and they don’t want you to know about it. Did You Know? • 65 percent of high school students admit to unsafe or illegal activities online. • 30 percent of teens have talked with a cyberstranger about meeting in person. • 32 percent clear the browser history to hide online activity from their parents.
• 64 percent post photos or videos of themselves online. • 73 percent use social networking websites. Tips for Reducing Risky Behaviors Be proactive. Don’t wait for a crisis to happen before addressing online safety. Remind your teen about rules and consequences, and stay engaged in the process. Other tips include: • Explore the Internet together. • Enforce ground rules and time limits. • Become their friend on social networking sites. • Learn about privacy settings and set them appropriately. • Trust but verify by installing monitoring software on their computer. Trust, Monitor, Educate, Protect Knowing what they’re doing online is as easy as checking your own e-mail, with remote monitoring software such as eBlaster from SpectorSoft. It can
inform you of searches for topics such as “depression” or “drugs.” It can also warn you if others are teasing them or daring your child to GNOC (get naked on camera). Whether you’re at home or at work, you receive e-mail reports and instant notification if they’re visiting inappropriate websites, spending too much time on Facebook or taking risks. For More Information To learn more, parents can visit www. SpectorSoftSoftware.com.

replacing filters and fluids as recommended in the owner’s manual and having engine performance problems such as rough idling corrected. • Use windows and air-conditioning wisely. At highway speeds, it’s better to keep windows up (and air-conditioning on, if wanted) to reduce air drag. But turn off the A/C in stop-and-go traffic to save fuel. (NAPSI)—Conserving gasoline saves motorists money and lessens America’s dependence on foreign oil. These gas-saving tips are from the experts at the nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), the group that tests and certifies automotive technicians. • Keep tires properly inflated and wheels in alignment. • Clean out clutter and unnecessary items to lessen the burden on the engine. • Consolidate trips and errands; try to travel when traffic is light to avoid stop-and-go conditions. • Go easy on sudden, hard accelerations; don’t speed; anticipate traffic patterns ahead and adjust your speed gradually. • Keep the engine running at its peak by
