hrough a coordinated Skype session, students at a California elementary school saw firsthand how their peers in Seaford have weathered Superstorm Sandy. Conversely, Seaford Harbor Elementary School students had the opportunity to show their gratitude to their west coast supporters for shipping donations to help them recover from the storm. This generosity was greatly appreciated.

Back To Basics By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The more I drive, the more I realize how many truly incompetent motorists there are out there. Let’s start with the basics. If you come out to find snow accumulated on the roof of your car, CLEAN IT OFF. Those of us who have the misfortune of driving behind you would greatly appreciate it. I know you think you’re saving time, but honestly, they make rear windows transparent for a reason…you know, just in case you want to take a quick peek back there every now and then. Once on the road, let’s review a few pointers… Shoulders of the road were made for the purpose of easing into and out of traffic while merging. Trust me, it’s a much better alternative than

practically standing on your brakes while in the right traffic lane as you suddenly realize your exit is approaching – oh, in 3 feet or so. Same goes for merging onto a major highway or parkway. Do not assume that the lane is clear for you to simply sail right through at 60 mph. There are occasionally, you know, other vehicles already inhabiting that space. Then there are those scenarios that are simply so bizarre, they are beyond words. A few weeks ago, I was stopped at a light on the Service Road of the LIE. As I waited in the left hand turning lane, a truck opposite me in the right hand lane, I noticed a car approach in the middle lane, “driven” by a man staring intently at the map spread across his steering wheel. Suddenly, he apparently

decided that he needed to be somewhere else, and proceeded to back up on the Service Road and cut his wheel, angling his car toward this aforementioned truck in the right lane…all the while, never shifting his gaze from the map. With a mix of horror and amusement, I watched the scene unfold. I glanced at the truck driver, to see him absolutely hysterical with laughter, shaking his head in amazement. The light turned green at that point, spurring me to get out of there before witnessing Act II of this particular play. No telling what the next move might have been! Let’s all focus people. And not on our maps, please. The road. Only the road. And for goodness sake, invest in a snowbrush.

Creative Expressions She Doesn’t Look Back The Gallery Anymore

Featuring Poetry And Photos Submitted By Our Readers!

By: Karen Ranieri, North Massapequa My babies are growing up What they used to love me doing Is just embarrassing now My little boy walks down the hall From a distance, all I see is his back Then suddenly, he turns to see if I’m still there And gives me a wave My heart melts ‘Cause his big sisters They don’t look back anymore She doesn’t look back I guess it’s okay It means she’s growing up In every sense of the way Sometimes those moments get lost Day to day But when my little guy looked back It reminded me of so many yesterdays I drop her off to her hourly job She tells me not to stop in front It’s too embarrassing Getting a lift from my mom She scurries in through the door She doesn’t look back anymore My baby is getting ready to dance Her tutu and make-up on I used to walk her backstage And she’d glance and I’d give her a wink You’re going to do great Don’t be scared Just look straight ahead Don’t look at the floor Now, she doesn’t look back anymore They say you have to let go Cut those apron strings

No one told me the pain that would bring ‘Cause she doesn’t look back anymore She packed her bags And we flew and flew A thousand miles later We were at her new school I tried to be strong And decorated her dorm I knew soon It wouldn’t be long To say our goodbyes I didn’t want to ruin her excitement Being on her own for the first time I put on my shades To hide my tears I could feel her stare As I drove away The pain is too great Nothing will be the same as before I’ve had to learn To not look back anymore Hold on to those moments When their sweet little eyes Search for you in a crowd

One day as I was walking with my cane And time for me to go I glanced up And behind the curtain I could see those big brown eyes She was looking back To make sure I was okay Saying a silent prayer That I’d make it home safe on my way My baby looked back today

On March 3rd, the Seaford FD welcomed home, one of their own, firefighter William (Bill) Nickdow. One would ask why would the Department do this. Well it is because Bill would have died on his trip to the Bahamas, earlier this year, if it wasn’t for the quick action of two other Seaford Firefighter/ Medics. On January 16th of this year firefighter Nickdow was on vacation with two other members of the department and was struck by a car while driving a

moped in the Bahamas. Bill, at the time, was riding with two EMT’s Firefighter Vlahoginis and Firefighter Scivoletti who treated firefighter Nickdow at the scene of the accident for a compound fracture and partially severed femoral artery, prior to the arrival of an ambulance. Both these members are credited for saving firefighter Nickdow life by placing two tourniquets on his leg and stopping the bleeding and treating him for shock. Had this quick response not been done Nickdow would have bleed to death by the time medical help finally arrived. Later that night firefighter Nickdow underwent eight hours of surgery to repair the artery and would need further surgeries to repair the leg. On January 17th firefighter Nickdow mom Carolyn flew to the Bahamas and arranged for a medic flight to a trauma center in Florida where he underwent an additional five more hours of surgery. Bill remained in the hospital for another for four weeks before being transported by air to New York and then transported by ambulance to Glen Cove Hospital Firefighter Nickdow underwent intensive rehabilitation at Glen Cove Hospital for an additional two weeks. Finally returning home on March 3rd , almost two months after his accident, where he was welcomed by his fellow members of the Seaford Fire Department, family and friends.

For commuting residents who prefer two wheels over four, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, Councilwoman Angie Cullin and Councilman Gary Hudes are inviting them to participate in a lottery for the use of eight no-cost bike lockers at the Bellmore train station. The lockers will be available for use by the eight winners for a one-year period, beginning on Monday, April 1st, 2013. “Now entering the second year of this program, eight bike lockers will provide lottery winners with a safe, secure

Through a coordinated Skype session, students at a California elementary school saw firsthand how their peers in Seaford have weathered Superstorm Sandy. Conversely, Seaford Harbor Elementary School students had the opportunity to show their gratitude to their west coast supporters for shipping donations to help them recover from the storm. Seaford Elementary School students expressed a boisterous “thank you” to students from Webster Elementary School in Malibu, California after they received a donation of $600 and three $25 gift cards for their school, as well as dozens of goody-filled packages for students. Each of the 108 students impacted by the storm received a large envelope containing two books, a $25 Target gift card, two custom-designed bookmarks and several

letters from Webster students. The effort, according to Webster Elementary School Principal Philip Cott, was a meaningful one for students and families who collectively worked on preparing the envelopes and shipping them to the Harbor School. “Our main goal was to let you know that we understand what you have endured and to offer our support as you recover,” Cott wrote in a letter to the Harbor School. He went on to explain the devastating fires that caused Webster families to lose their homes shut down Webster Elementary School for a week for cleanup. During the Skype session, Webster students were curious to know where their Seaford friends are living. Some said they are residing in trailers or the upstairs of their homes because the downstairs have been

rendered uninhabitable. The discussion shifted to what each class was studying in school, and then to a lighter topic: celebrities and paparazzi. Harbor students listened with wide-eyed fascination, then gasped and giggled as their California peers said they’ve seen the likes of Adam Sandler, Britney Spears and Justin Beiber. “The collaboration was very successful,” said Harbor School Principal Donna DeLucia-Troisi. “Not only did our students appreciate the heartfelt gifts they received, they had the opportunity to thank their California friends personally, learn a little about each other and share some moments of laughter. It was an ideal way to brighten up our students’ outlook as they, along with their families, recover from the impact of the storm.”
