Dr. Richard Orlandi and his staff at LaserToenailCenter.com offer in-office treatment of toenail fungus with a new revolutionary laser that kills toenail fungus. “The Pinpointe Laser is a major breakthrough in the treatment of toenail fungus. It is the newest and most effective FDA-approved treatment for toenail fungus now available to the public,” Dr. Orlandi explained. The Pinpointe Laser has appeared on Good Morning America, Fox News NY, ABC News and The Doctors TV show, All of these videos can be seen on their website, LaserToenailCenter.com. The general public is just becoming aware of this highly effective laser treatment that kills fungus underneath the toenail without pain. “The gentle laser light shines through the toenail, and the infrared light directly kills the fungal organisms. FDA studies started in 2007 reveal that

over 80% of the treated patients grew out normal looking toenails after just one treatment. Patients are extremely happy having this new treatment choice.” Dr. Orlandi continues saying, “The painless treatment requires no anesthesia, usually takes 20 to 30 minutes for all ten toes, has no side effects and uses no harmful UV radiation. Since there is no pain, you can walk out just like you walked in, with no restrictions. Toenail polish and shoes can be worn immediately after treatment. Excellent results are commonly seen following treatment of this condition. Healthy, clear toenails are a general indicator of good health, and there is no need to be embarrassed by unsightly fungal toenails.” For further information, contact Office Manager Arrianne at 631.669.4955.

Take A Seat By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Full disclosure: I am a Yankee fan. Always have been, always will be. That said, I fully respect those who are not. However, as with politics, when a rivalry takes a turn toward bitter hatred, I lose that respect. Let’s be reminded that, contrary to larger, more world-defining issues, baseball is a game – a highly profitable one, yes; but still, just a game. I laugh when I hear those who use the Yankees’ exorbitant payroll as a valid reason for despising each and every player on the team. Need it be pointed out that just about every team in the MLB employs numerous multi-millionaires on its roster? Is the difference between $5 million for one player versus $20 million for another really that different in the larger scope of things? These are grown men playing a game for a living.

Let’s face it – they are all grossly overpaid. The same can be said for most rock stars, members of Hollywood’s elite, just about all professional athletes – and even some members of a few more universally respected professions. You know, like lawyers and accountants and Wall Street executives… So yes, I understand the criticism directed at certain members of the baseball world whom fans feel have not pulled their weight, who may not have truly “earned their paycheck” this past season. I wholeheartedly agree. But seriously, do you mean to tell me that if a member of your favorite team went on to win the World Series, this extravagance would somehow be deemed more acceptable? I don’t know what it takes to “earn” $20 million, but I’m pretty sure playing baseball doesn’t qualify regardless of

the outcome of the games. It’s the system as a whole that is unbalanced. And, if we’re being totally candid, I’m willing to bet that there are few among us who would turn down such a lucrative opportunity if it meant a lifetime of financial security. So perhaps we shouldn’t be so quick to judge. I enjoy my entertainment as much as the next person. And yes, when my team puts on such a pathetic showing as they did this past postseason, I am filled with just as much frustration as the next person. But then common sense creeps in… just because someone signed a $20 million check for a player, does not guarantee that they will succeed each and every day. We are all only human, despite how inhuman such sums of money sometimes seem. Let’s all save the hatred for an issue that truly matters.

ISLAND SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY

Golfers at the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence’s inaugural Tee-Off For Our Teens tournament held last Wednesday at the Maidstone Club in East Hampton raised an impressive $126,000 to support the agency’s youthfocused programs. This first time event compliments LICADD’s R. Brinkley Smithers Invitational Golf Tournament, which was held in September in Nassau County. LICADD Board Director and resident of East Hampton and Locust Valley, Alfred E. Devendorf was pleased by the support of the local community, he remarked “LICADD has been graciously welcomed on the South Fork and the response to this event has been overwhelming. determine which videos will receive the most votes, with prize money donated for breast cancer research. “We danced the dance, and now it’s time to rock the vote,” said Linda Bily, Cancer Patient Advocacy & Community Outreach Coordinator for the Stony Brook University Cancer Center, who coordinated production of Stony Brook’s video. “We need the support not only of the campus, but from the broader community we serve, since our goal is 75,000 votes in just two weeks’ time.” Last year, Medline sponsored its first online competition nationwide to find the best Pink Glove Dance video. The competition featured 139 videos from hospitals, nursing homes, schools and other organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada. The contest quickly became a national social media phenomenon, with the videos receiving more than 1.2 million views, a half a million votes and thousands of tweets, blogs and texts. Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, S.C., won last year’s competition with 61,054 votes. Now the race is on to see which video will garner the most votes in 2012, with a top prize of $10,000 to be donated for breast cancer research to the winner’s selected charity of choice. Second prize is $5,000 and third prize is $2,000. Voting ends at midnight on Friday, October 26th, and the winners will be announced on November 2nd. Voting will be conducted using a contest application integrated with Facebook. Users must have a Facebook account and be logged into their account to vote. Users may access the contest application either on Facebook, via a link on www.Facebook.com/medli nebreastcancerawareness or from the contest page

that will be displayed on Pinkglovedance.com. Entries are displayed alphabetically so voters can easily locate the entry they wish to vote for. Stony Brook’s video is set to the tune of “You Won’t Dance Alone,” by the Best Day Ever, which was the song used in the second year of the Pink Glove Dance competition. It features campy performances by such leaders as Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, Senior Vice President, Health Sciences, and Dean, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and Yusuf Hannun, MD, Director of the Cancer Center, Vice Dean, Cancer Medicine and the Joel Kenny Professor of Medicine as well as many Stony Brook University sports teams and clubs, and community supporters. “This is all in good fun, but for serious business: defeating breast cancer,” said Dr. Hannun. “This video project is symbolic of all that we can accomplish when we join together to achieve one unifying goal. It symbolizes the enormous teamwork at Stony Brook Medicine in dedicating our research efforts toward finding a cure for this disease.” Dr. Hannun in particular recognized Linda Bily for her role in coordinating the video, along with Lynn Spinnato of Spinnato Gallery, who served as director; and Lauren Kaushansky, Instructor in the Professional Education Program, Department of History, at Stony Brook University, who served as creative consultant on the project. The Pink Glove Dance video phenomenon began three years ago, when Medline produced the original Pink Glove Dance video to raise breast cancer awareness. The first video generated more than 13 million views on YouTube and inspired countless videos and events around the world.

Toolbox For Education

For More Information Call: 631-226-2636 - www.theneighbornewspapers.com

Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation has awarded a $38,000 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education® grant to the Seaford Harbor School for their Outdoor Learning Through Play Experience. Seaford Harbor Elementary has used the grant to build a play structure that appeals to all students and their different learning styles. For the children who are auditory learners, there are bells and chimes; for the visual learners, there are structures that incorporate different colors and designs; for the interpersonal learner the playground structure provides them with a fun and safe way to interact with others; for the tactile learners there are structures that they can move and turn and for the mathematical learners there are number and counting areas. The school has created an outdoor play structure that is fun, safe, and educational because learning takes place all of the time - both inside and outside of the classroom. The entire school community, including students, parents, and staff members are able to interact with the outdoor space and are able to incorporate the space into their curriculum and lives. The new playground has replaced the old kindergarten playground. A ribbon cutting

ceremony has taken place and many local politicians attended the event. Representatives from Lowes also attended the event. Melanie Schnaier, parent and grant writer, stated, “I am delighted to thank Lowe’s for helping us to make our dream a reality. “We now have a beautiful playground for our children to enjoy for many years to come.” “Lowe’s is committed to recognizing and supporting efforts that enrich the lives of our neighbors and customers,” said Marshall Croom, chairman of Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation. “By supporting schools like the Seaford Harbor School we believe we are contributing to a cause that’s important to our customers and employees and helping build a stronger foundation for the children who will be tomorrow’s employees, homeowners and community leaders.” Lowe’s Toolbox for Education provides the financial tools to improve schools throughout the United States. Lowe’s signature education grant program has donated more than $30 million to 6,000 K-12 public schools since 2006, benefitting more than 3.5 million schoolchildren. Since its inception in 1957, Lowe’s Charitable and Educational

Foundation has helped communities nationwide through employee volunteerism and financial contributions. In 2011, Lowe’s and the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation together contributed more than $32 million to support communities in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Online Car Shopping (NAPSI)—You may be able to find a great used car online—if you heed a few hints: • You can search millions of used cars for sale online if you go to sites like Autotrader.com and Cars.com. • To narrow your search, consider and compare price, photos of the cars and their descriptions. • Consider the seller. Is the person or company reputable? Is it a dealer or a private seller? If it’s the latter, has this person been recommended to you by someone you know and trust? • Before you buy any used car, it’s a good idea to check the vehicle’s history with a Carfax Vehicle History Report. These can help you make better decisions about used cars. Visit www.carfax.com to get a report and learn more.

Circle Of Hope On October 25th, Chabad of Merrick is set to host its 1st Annual Journey for a Purpose, a women’s evening in support of those who face breast cancer. The event is also the launch of Circle of Hope, a unique organization providing resources for breast cancer patients, their families and the community in the form of financial assistance, emotional support and preventative health seminars. “If you save one life, you’ve saved an entire world,” quoted Rabbi Shimon Kramer, director of the Chabad Center for Jewish Life in Merrick. “Unfortunately, most people in our community know at least one woman who has suffered from this terrible disease; we’re forming Circle of Hope to positively affect their lives.” The Circle of Hope will provide monetary assistance, rides to the doctor or hospital, summer camp scholarships for patients’ children, monthly support groups, preventative testing, educational

seminars, a wig bank and makeup lessons for those u n d e r g o i n g chemotherapy, and more. “Jewish women have a higher risk for breast cancer,” said Chanie Kramer, co-director of Chabad and Circle of Hope, “so we feel it is of utmost importance to do everything possible to support them. Circle of Hope is the first of its kind at Chabad Houses worldwide.” The Journey for a Purpose launch event is set to take place on Thursday, October 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Grand Ballroom of the Sephardic Temple, 775 Branch Boulevard in, Cedarhurst. Some 300 women are expected and will enjoy a musical performance by 17-year-old Julien Harris, an address by Dr. Ruth Oratz, premier oncologist at New York University’s Langone Medical Center, a runway show sponsored by Runway Couture and Let’s Accessorize & Let’s Bag It, a Chinese auction and raffle, as well as various boutiques for shopping. “It’s a very important organization that will help

women going through a hard time in their life, and give them the opportunity to get help while they’re getting treated,” said breast cancer survivor Cindy Knoll, who is chairing the event. “It helps them to take care of themselves, and eliminates their worries.” Couvert for Circle of Hope’s Journey for a Purpose is $80; guests can become a pink sponsor for $136 and receive free raffle tickets; sponsorships of $360 and greater will receive a special Circle of Hope gift. Community members may also honor or memorialize individuals who have survived or passed away from cancer in the Scroll of Honor/Scroll in Memoriam for $10 per name. Center, were honored last night at the Moms Who Kick Inc. Gala Performance 2013 Fitness In Motion at a Garden City Hotel. Drs. Lee and Shapira were honored for their work in breast and ovarian

cancer, and more specifically their efforts to discover and validate new biomarkers for early detection, prediction of disease course and outcome, treatment response, and risk of relapse in breast and/or

ovarian cancer. Preliminary results of their studies have been presented at a number of national and international meetings. For example, they presented data this past year at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting, which showed a genetic marker embedded in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), called microRNA, indicates if a patient with ovarian cancer has a benign or cancerous tumor and that she will benefit from chemotherapy after surgery on the tumor. And at the 2012 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting, Drs. Lee and

Shapira presented data which showed they discovered a potential explanation for why breast cancer is not experienced the same way with African American and Caucasian patients, and that there are four main subtypes of breast cancer, one of which has distinct similarities to ovarian cancer. Their efforts to simultaneously study both breast and ovarian cancer place their research at the forefront of breast cancer research. Moms Who Kick has pledged a portion of the 2013 calendar campaign to benefit the research conducted by Drs. Lee and Shapira. Moms Who Kick is a 501(c)(3) Public

Charity dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research and to support women’s health. Their annual gala is held to celebrate breast cancer survivors and women affected by cancer. Featuring fit and active moms, many who are breast cancer survivors, along with their bios, cancer awareness tips and tributes, the Moms Who Kick annual calendar was unveiled at the gala. The moms who are featured in the calendar also participated in a fashion show. The event also included a cocktail hour with open bar, seated dinner, dessert, raffle, door prizes, an auction and dancing.

Cancer Walk For Hope CancerCare will host the 10th Annual Lung Cancer Walk for Hope on Sunday, November 4th, at the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course, in Woodbury. The lung cancer walk was founded in 2003 with 60 walkers and has grown to include more

than 1,200 participants. The fundraising goal for this year’s event is $250,000. Lung cancer is often referred to as a “silent” cancer due to the stigma and lack of public awareness about the disease. CancerCare, a national nonprofit,

responded to the need to support people coping with lung cancer and their loved ones by launching a lung cancer program, which provides free counseling, support groups, education, and financial assistance. On-site registration for the Walk is $40.00 for

adults, $20.00 for students ages 13-22, and $10.00 for children 12 and under. All registered walkers will receive an official Lung Cancer Walk for Hope T-shirt. Registration and checkin begins at 8 a.m., and the opening ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. The

Accepting Nominations Nassau BOCES Education Partner Awards program is now accepting nominations through Friday, November 2nd. Now in its seventh year, the program has added specific award categories allowing for a greater number and variety of honorees. In addition to the Education Partner award category, which is open to individuals from all walks of life, nominations are

being accepted in five special award categories. And, for the first time, organizations can be nominated. The award categories are: • Education Partner (open to all) - Teachers • Nassau BOCES employees Organizations • School Board Members - Students “One of the nicest things about our program

is that, just like Nassau BOCES, it is open to people from all walks of life, and we welcome nominations that reflect this diversity,” said Dr. Thomas Rogers, Nassau BOCES district superintendent. “Each year, we honor those whose impact on public education can be measured in a tangible way. And, in these challenging times we are especially appreciative of

people who go above and beyond the scope of their commitments.” A strategic education partner with local school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the Education Partner Awards program to recognize those who share its commitment to providing the best possible education for learners of all ages and abilities. Over the past six years, the Nassau BOCES

Education Partner Awards program has recognized more than 75 individuals for their influence on public education. The awards program is open to everyone who is involved with, or is a supporter of, preschool to 12th grade or adult education in Nassau County. Previous nominees have included parents, educators, coaches, members of the public and private sector

including, attorneys, reporters, volunteers, legislators, college professors and retirees. This year’s winners will be announced in January 2013 and will be honored March 21st, 2013, at the seventh annual Nassau BOCES Education Partner Awards Gala sponsored by the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation.
