Snowflake Village eaford Manor School’s Snowflake Village was recently held, during which time the gym was transformed into a winter village where the children could shop for gifts for their families and friends. How many students get the opportunity to give back and prepare for their futures at the same time? Approximately 50 students from the Nassau BOCES Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center (Barry Tech) did just that, offering their services to the world-renowned Habitat for Humanity organization. These Barry Tech humanitarians worked to build a new Habitat home right here in Nassau County. Carpentry, construction electricity and plumbing students contributed to a variety of fundamental construction work, including roof framing, installation of insulation and windows, and running wiring and piping. This particular Habitat home had to meet the regulations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which meant the Barry Tech workers got a crash course in ADA compliance. All entrances, both interior and exterior, had to be wheelchair accessible, and certain areas required special construction, such as a wheelchair ramp leading up to the entryway, and the creation of a custom bathroom and shower area. The Barry Tech students gained as much as they gave during the Habitat build. The students got invaluable on-the-job training and were able to apply 21st-century career skills in a real-life situation. Such projects enable students to put their skills to use, helping them to become college and career ready upon graduation. “Involvement in a project like this motivates our students to greater academic achievement,” says John Broderick, a Barry Tech work experience teacher coordinator. “Each and every student participates, regardless of skill-level. In addition to invaluable training, they get an opportunity to give back to their community. With the ADA component, our students learned how to help someone with specific needs to meet those needs in a day-to-day living environment.”

yourself out of those holiday blues? Here are a few suggestions from the Crisis Center: · Lower expectations of a “perfect” holiday celebration with friends and family – it’s exhausting; go for fun and friendly instead! · Take some time for yourself (even a 15minute break!)…get outside, exercise, listen to music, read a book; · Feeling lonely and isolated? Volunteer at the local food bank – you’ll soon see that you’re needed and valued! · Don’t get yourself into debt buying presents! You won’t be able to enjoy the gift of giving! · The holiday season is not an excuse to do away with healthy eating and exercise for ten days! Indulge (small tastings of everything) on the special days and your body will feel better;

While most people make the assumption that the suicide rate is highest during the winter holiday season, the experts at Long Island Crisis Center (LICC) say that the spring months actually rank highest for suicide. “But, it is true that a lot of us walk around with a case of the ‘holiday blues,’ which could shade our perception,” states LICC’s Associate Executive Director, Theresa Buhse. “Many people who attempt suicide feel depressed. When they feel depressed during the winter, it’s actually easier for them to handle their depressed state because a lot of people around them are feeling ‘down.’ This could be due to the cold and dreary weather, the early nightfall, or the coming holidays when expectations are set too high!” What can you do to get

With facilities in Long Beach still unavailable due to damage from Hurricane Sandy, Mercy Medical Center is pleased to have the Long Beach Medical Center Breast Cancer and Breast Health Support Group hold its meetings at its facility in Rockville Centre. Beginning in January, meetings will be held at Mercy on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the hospital’s board room, located on the first floor, adjacent to the chapel. Led by a registered nurse, the group offers a positive and
supportive environment for individuals with breast health issues, and residents of all nearby communities are invited to attend. The group offers support, guidance and education on the emotional, physical and psychological aspects of coping with breast cancer and other breast health issues, its impact on the individual as well as the family, and information on topics such as: understanding your diagnosis, treatment options, chemotherapy, radiation, pain management, exercise, nutrition, stress management
and more. Mercy’s ongoing efforts to assist the storm-devastated Long Beach community also include facilitating continuity of care by providing temporary space to Dr. Joel Benowitz, a surgeon whose offices were destroyed by the storm. Advance registration is not required to attend the support group. Light refreshments will be served and ample free parking will be available. For information and travel directions, call 516.62.MERCY.

the food is available. Learn more about why you might be eating when not hungry. • Plan. Prepare healthy snacks throughout the day. If you tend to get hungry between meals, bring along a 200-calorie, whole grain, high-fiber snack. Fiber keeps you feeling full longer. Learn how a little planning helps your heart, and your budget. • Slow down. Enjoy each bite and put your fork down while chewing, then take a drink between each bite. This gives your body enough time to trigger your brain that you are satisfied (not necessarily full). • Pay attention. Do not eat in front of the TV or computer, or while standing in the kitchen or talking on the phone. When you do these things, you’re more likely to lose track of how much you’ve eaten. • Use technology. As we continue to become increasingly distracted by modern technology, our focus on health can fall to the back burner. But it doesn’t have to be that way. “We can actually use our smartphones and other electronic devices to help us,” said Platt, a volunteer with the American Heart Association. “There are now apps that manage food records, count calories, help you track what you eat and even provide guidance on healthy food choices at the grocery store and restaurants.” • Keep a food diary. Write down everything you eat, look at it, then identify why you ate it – was it hunger, stress, boredom? Then look for areas you can make adjustments and incorporate healthy changes. “Keeping a food diary is really key to awareness,” Platt said. “Most people are surprised at all they’ve consumed when they review what they’ve eaten.” Eating healthier is just one lifestyle change you can make to live a heart healthy life. More than 80 percent of heart disease can be prevented by simply lifestyle changes. Learn more at www.heart.org/gettinghealt hy.

HERE IT IS!!
It’s the holidays and for most Americans, that means eating – lots of eating – followed by weight gain and a New Year’s resolution to lose weight. But why not take a healthier approach to what we eat during this holiday season and beyond? According to a recent website survey, about 18 percent of people say it’s hard for them to eat healthy because they don’t want to stop eating their favorite foods. The good news is you don’t have to. You can still enjoy your favorite occassional indulgences, but in moderation. It’s all about being mindful of what you eat. Mindless Eating Mindless eating is consuming food just because it’s there. It’s eating while distracted – watching TV, working at a computer or texting on our smartphones. It’s eating for emotional comfort instead of for hunger. Simply put, it’s not paying attention to what we eat which can lead to being overweight and even obesity. “Mindless eating has always been an issue,” said Riska Platt, M.S., a registered dietitian and certified nutritionist for the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York. “The key to mindful eating is awareness. Just by paying more attention to what you eat, you’re more likely to make beneficial changes.” Awareness When you pay attention to what you’re eating, you can make small changes that make a big difference. Here are some tips toward a more mindful approach: • Control portions. Especially during the holidays, know that you’ll have more opportunities to eat festive snacks and desserts. You don’t have to deprive yourself, just eat smaller portions and less often. • Eat when you’re hungry. Just because the clock says noon doesn’t mean you have to eat. If you’re not hungry, wait until you are – just don’t wait until you’re famished because you might overeat. Also, don’t eat just because

The End Of The World As We Know It
By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
Two days. That’s it. Two days from now, the world will end. What to do with those remaining 48 hours… Silly as it sounds, this is exactly what many people have been planning for in anticipation of the ominous 12.21.12. Pack your bags, stock up on the essentials and head underground with your rifles – because, let’s face it, ancient predictions seem to have a lot of merit in this day and age. Right. Call me a skeptic. Brand me a cynic. Perhaps, in

two days, all of us nonbelievers will be shocked by the turn of events. Or lack of, as the case may be. Let the doomsayers and naysayers battle it out. One interesting question it does bring to light is: What would you do with your last few days on earth? Who would you spend them with? Where would you go? What would you hope to accomplish? There never seems to be enough time day to day to do what we want. That’s under normal circumstances. But throw in the urgency of the end of civilization, and priorities tend to be reevaluated just a bit.
Only 6 Days To Shop
This is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, in two days time, assuming we will all be sitting here laughing about the ancient Mayan prophecy gone wrong, we will have ample time to take this new “bucket” list and put it into action. Sort of like a new lease on life, no? So relax. Enjoy. Savor. Christmas is around the corner, followed by that traditional Times Square fresh start we all look forward to…and beyond that, who knows. Part of the fun, part of the adventure, part of the experience – here’s to the beginning of a whole new world!
Nassau BOCES won a Learning Technology Grant (LTG) through the New York State Education Department, providing $150,000 over the next three years to strengthen English Language Arts (ELA) skills for English Language Learners (ELL) and special education students in two Nassau County school districts. The LTG funds state-ofthe-art technology and professional development to improve student achievement. Through the grant, the districts will receive sound enhancement systems and document cameras to improve classroom learning. The sound enhancement system — consisting of a wireless microphone for the teacher, a remote receiver and mounted speakers — has been proven to eliminate ambient noise and thus improve student engagement. Sound enhancement is not simply cranking up the volume; it is a carefully

engineered audio delivery system that creates a learning atmosphere in which every student hears as though they are right in front of the teacher, so they don’t miss a word of instruction. Research has shown that sound enhancement has significantly improved ELA achievement rates, increased student collaboration and decreased disciplinary problems. Document cameras allow teachers to display any document or object on a large screen for the whole class to see, much like a digitally high-tech overhead projector. Research states that document cameras are among the most effective technology tools for improving student engagement, resulting in higher achievement rates. In order to optimize the use of this leading-edge educational technology, Nassau BOCES will provide professional development to the two LTG districts. Teams of
special education teachers, ELL teachers and library media specialists from each school will learn how best to implement the technology to support student achievement of the ELA common core standards. These teams will be trained by experts in special education, English as a Second Language (ESL) and technology, and be mentored by Model Schools coaches. “The goal is to raise the ELA performance of elementary-level special education and ELL students, to help them meet the common core standards,” says Supervisor Pat Koehler of the three-year grant project. “The technology is research proven and the professional development is exemplary. In the end, we hope to increase the number of Nassau County students who graduate from school ready to succeed in college and careers.”
HOLIDAY SERVICE PROJECT Pack 163 participated in a holiday service project recently. About 20 Cub Scouts covered six masses in support of the St. Agnes Giving Tree program. The boys were asked to spend a few minutes before each mass accepting gifts from parishioners that were being collected for the less fortunate. They helped carry them to the storage area, as well as keep the Giving Tree full of ornaments for those still looking to participate in the program. Other high ranking Long Island security leaders were also in attendance; including First Deputy Police Commissioner of Nassau County, Robert McGuigan, Executive Director of the Applied Science Foundation for Homeland Security, Richard Rotanz, Director of Long Island Forum for Technology (LIFT), Lois Gréaux, along with representatives from various local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. The students attended this exclusive conference as part of Barry Tech’s new Emergency Management Homeland Security course. The program is designed to teach students about the complex facets of this emerging field, including how to handle emergency scenarios and identifying potential terrorism, criminal profiling, and deciphering a variety of data. The course was developed in accordance to policies aligned with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and FEMA which has the full support of the Long Island branch of the Department of Homeland Security. After listening to Secretary Napolitano speak about Homeland Security’s efforts in working with local law enforcement and the private sector, the Barry Tech students posed some

tough questions to the secretary. “What can we do to combat advanced warfare tactics such as cyber warfare?” asked William Rodriguez, a senior from Uniondale UFSD. “How would our nation be affected by a cyber terror attack?” The visit to the Morrelly Center’s Applied Science Foundation building was a lesson in and of itself as the students experienced many of the intricate procedures involved in national security. Students underwent a background check, having their names and addresses vetted. While on the premises they were required to have their identification badges visible at all times and were responsible for avoiding restricted areas. The students were also required to follow a specific protocol for asking questions. “Our students are learning that Homeland Security is not just about antiterrorism,” Instructor Scott Downs said of both the course and the conference. “It is also a collective effort among all agencies involved as well as ourselves to keep our country safe. We all need to take responsibility and become actively engaged in the process.” Rodriguez, who is studying to become a police officer, said, “This course is helping me to build an awareness of what’s going on around the world. I’m also developing a sense of what to do if there’s a terrorist attack.”

focused on the theme, “I Elect To Be Drug Free.” Students wore red, white and blue to show the spirit of an election year while displaying their choice to stay away from drugs. Throughout the week, students also wore jeans for “I’m A Jean-I-Us-I’m Drug Free” day, crazy hats for “Put A Cap On Drugs” and sweats for “Staying Drug Free Is No Sweat”
day. They signed pledges to be drug-free that hung on huge red ribbons in the cafeteria. And, club members from Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) made posters and broadcast daily morning announcements with a fact or statistic about alcohol and other drugs. Activities at both the Harbor and Manor
Elementary Schools centered on safety and how to make good choices. Age-appropriate lessons, reinforced with puppets and songs, were delivered by the Child Abuse Prevention Services, the Nassau County Police Department and the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. Topics such as, “Cybersmartz,” how to “Steer Clear of Bullies” and “Too Good for Drugs” were presented. Teachers performed a puppet show for third and fourth graders called “Nic and Friends,” to illustrate the dangers of cigarettes and alcohol. At Manor Elementary School, students also planted red tulip bulbs as a symbol of making good choices and leading healthy lifestyles.
