Thanksgiving Show

O

n Friday, November 22nd, Fifth Avenue School first graders performed in the annual Thanksgiving Show. Students dressed in costumes as Pilgrims, Native Americans and turkeys, and sang songs that told the story of the first Thanksgiving. The performance ended with the singing of a beautiful song entitled, I’m Grateful, which helped the students to reflect upon what they are thankful for.

I knew I was facing surgery and it was risky, but after one meeting with the cardiac team at Southside Hospital, I felt I couldn’t be in better hands. The doctors, nurses and staff treated me like family. Now I’m 89 and back winning cases in the courtroom.”

Philip’s condition was considered too risky for aortic valve surgery by other hospitals. Instead, Southside Hospital’s cardiac team performed a new, less-invasive procedure called a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). Inserting a catheter into his artery and guiding it up to his heart, we replaced the damaged valve, avoiding the risks of traditional open heart surgery. Today, Philip is feeling better than ever!

ANIMAL HOSPITAL PLANETARIUM VISIT - In November, 3rd graders at South Country School visited the Vanderbilt Planetarium and Museum to deepen their knowledge about the solar system. This adventure aligned with their Science curriculum and helped explain how the sun, planets and constellations work together in the sky. Congratulations to Jackie Pasquerella on being named the 20132014 Bay Shore Girls Varsity Softball Coach.

A Bay Shore native and one of the most successful softball players in Bay Shore history, Jackie Pasquerella graduated in 1997 with All-American honors. Jackie went on to spend her collegiate softball career at Villanova University, where she garnered All Big-East and All-Region honors. Her softball career continued overseas, in Italy, as a

member of Team Sorano in the Italian Professional Federation.

In 2004, Pasquerella was drafted into the National Professional Fastpitch league as a member of the NY/NJ Juggernaut. She was a fixture at third base throughout her seven year professional career with the Juggernaut, the New England Riptide and the Akron Racers.

Coach “Paz,” as her athletes have come to call her, was a three-time AllNPF selection, a two-time NPF Champion and earned

NPF Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2007 (no errors in 38 games).

Pasquerella has spent the last 10 years as a Physical Education teacher in the Bay Shore School District. She has served as a JV Girls Basketball coach, Assistant Varsity Girls Basketball coach and JV Softball coach.

Most recently, as Assistant Varsity Softball coach, Jackie helped lead the team to the Class AA New York State title in 2010.

SPIRIT OF GIVING - In keeping with South Country School’s tradition of giving back, a school-wide food drive helped to fill 30 Thanksgiving baskets this year. In order to complete these Thanksgiving meals, hundreds of dollars in turkeys and supermarket gift cards were donated by South Country staff and families. These baskets were given as gifts to some of our South Country families in need. All our parent volunteers, who helped assemble and wrap the baskets, were grateful to help extend their hearts and hands for the benefit of Bay Shore children and their families.

The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York (MYO) is inviting high school-aged orchestral musicians and choral singers to audition for the July 8th through 21st, 2014 performance tour of The People’s Republic of China.

The two-week tour will include performances and visits to Beijing, Chengdu, Xi’an, Yangshuo, Guilin and Shanghai. The tour will also explore major attractions such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Terracotta Warrior Museum, and the Giant Panda Research Base.

An optional, additional week of touring in Hawaii will be offered.

MYO ensembles have embarked on several international tours over the years with concert visits to Central and Eastern Europe, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, China, Australia and New Zealand, Spain,
