The Learning Curve By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I hate learning new things. I do. Sure, it’s great to broaden your horizons and add skills to your repertoire, but the actual learning process? Not so much fun. I prefer to fast forward to the part where I miraculously become highly proficient at something (which sometimes never happens) rather than muddle for too long in the learning curve portion. The funny part is that, with most things, once this “curve has been navigated, you often realize that the new thing you were so

hesitant to take on wasn’t so bad in the first place. Simple, even. Just took a little getting used to, was all. Over time, we seem to be able to adapt to anything. Think about it. Look back on all your years in school‌ weren’t you nervous the first time being tested on a particular subject? Didn’t you get butterflies the morning of a big presentation? Wasn’t your initial reaction to any massive projects to immediately push them to the back of your mind and procrastinate? New = Frightening then, and it still does, to some extent, now.

They often say you should try one new thing each and every day – whether something as simple as tasting a new food, reading a new book or buying a new pair of jeans‌right on up to the more monumental decisions of whether to search for a new job or buy a new house or travel the world. New = Exciting. It signifies growth, maturity, experience – all those things associated with moving onward and upward. Sometimes, all it takes is a little help navigating the curve to ultimately see the path for what it is – a straight line to improvement.

must possess a valid big game hunting license, a signed landowner’s endorsement and a town permit. Only shotguns loaded with a single slug and muzzleloaders are legal for use during the January season. Crossbows are no longer a legal hunting instrument in New York as of December 31, 2012. Hunters should check with local towns and villages to determine any local restrictions or discharge ordinances. Overpopulations of deer have the ability to negatively impact natural habitats along with agricultural, public

and private properties, and public health in the forms of automobile/deer collisions and tick-borne diseases. Hunting is DEC’s most effective and efficient known tool to maintain wildlife populations at levels that are compatible with communities and natural resources. DEC regulations require that lands eligible for deer hunting must be at least 10 acres in size, and hunters

5 Boro Bike Tour

Bike New York recently announced dates and details for the 2013 TD Five Boro Bike Tour, held Sunday, May 5th, 2013. The Tour will be returning to a “rush” firstcthome, first-serve registration system which will open on Tuesday, January 22nd at 12:00 p.m. EST. Held annually the first Sunday in May, the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is America’s largest cycling event with a 40 mile, traffic-free ride through all five boroughs for 32,000 cyclists. The Tour is co-produced by Bike New York, the city’s premiere bicycling organization, and the New York City Department of Transportation, in association with multiple City of New York departments. Proceeds from the event fund Bike New York’s education program “This annual springtime ritual --which keeps growing in popularity -- is simply the most exciting way to experience the dynamic, diverse neighborhoods in all five boroughs of our great city,” said Ken Podziba, President and CEO of Bike New York. “Bicyclists wait all year to feel the thrill and freedom of riding 40 miles on car-free streets, highways and bridges as they only can in the TD Five Boro Bike Tour.” 2013 TD Five Boro Bike Tour regular registration will be a “rush” registration system, similar to 2011 where the Tour’s first-come, first-serve registration system sold out in less than 24 hours. With the return to a rush system, Bike New York anticipates a similar sellout for the 2013 Tour. TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®, will once again serve as title sponsor. “TD Bank is proud to continue sponsoring the TD Five Boro Bike Tour, the marquee cycling event in New York,” said Chris Giamo, Regional President, TD Bank. “We feel it is important to invest in our communities, and the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is a fun, environmentally friendly way to see the City while experiencing the TD Bank brand.” Those interested in participating in the TD Five Boro Bike Tour will have the opportunity to register starting on January 22 at 12:00 p.m. EST. Adults must register themselves individually. Youth registration will take place in conjunction with an individual adult registration. All youth registrations must maintain a one child to one adult ratio. Participants hoping to ride with friends and family will have the opportunity to link their registrations together after the event sells out. Bike New York has also partnered with onPeak to provide more options for out-of-town visitors to find accommodations with competitive rates at convenient

locations throughout the city. Details to convenient and affordable accommodations will be available during the registration process. Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City Bike New York, in partnership with the Giro d’Italia, is adding a new way to ride the TD Five Boro Bike Tour. This new VIP registration option will give riders the chance to test their limits, with a timed climb up the Verrazano Bridge. In addition, all Giro riders receive an exclusive Italian-made Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City jersey to wear during the event. Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City registration opens on January 22nd at 12:00 p.m. EST. It is only available for riders 18 years of age and older. “We’re excited to partner with the Giro d’Italia and bring two of the world’s largest cycling events together,” said Podziba. More details will be available in the following weeks. “Ride for a Reason” Charity Program Regular registration and the Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City are not the only ways to ride in the 2013 TD Five Boro Bike Tour. Prospective riders can also “Ride for a Reason” and champion one of Bike New York’s 43 charity partners. “Last year’s ‘Ride for a Reason’ charity program was a great success, raising more than $1.1 million for our partner charities,” said Podziba. “Based on last year’s fundraising accomplishment, we’re excited to see this year’s results from our charity partners. Fundraising for a charity is a tremendous way to give back and support a meaningful cause while having the time of your life.” Below is a full list of Bike New York’s charity partners: · Alzheimer’s Association, New York City Chapter · American Liver Foundation · ASPCA · Big Brothers Big Sisters · Broadway Green Alliance · BronxWorks · Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation · CancerCare · Community Access · Cystic Fibrosis Foundation · dance4life · Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) · First Descents · Gilda’s Club New York City · Haiti Hydroelectric, Rotary Club Metro NYC · Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation · Hope for the Warriors

Caring For Granite Countertops (NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an

industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what you clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid

abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive. There’s a way to stretch your dollars. • Mind your budget: JAWS Glass & Hard Surface Cleaner (www.jawscleans. com) cleans granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, glass and

even your flat-screen TV. It’s also non-toxic and costs less than most other cleaners because each JAWS product is actually two bottles in one. (The cartridge refill is attached to the bottle.) There are also some other basic preventive measures you can take to protect your granite countertops: • Use coasters: Place a coaster under all glasses, particularly those

containing alcohol or citrus juices that can etch or dull the surface of many stone countertops. • Use trivets or mats: They’ll protect your granite countertop from hot dishes and help avoid scratches. Granite countertops can really add spark to a kitchen or bathroom. Proper care will keep them looking beautiful.

There are ways to help prevent the spread of MRSA, a potentially life-threatening, antibiotic-resistant Staph microorganism, or germ, that can survive on hard surfaces in community settings such as locker rooms, gyms, child care centers and schools. Visit w w w. s t o p m r s a n o w. o r g for tips and information on the Bleacher Brigade challenge to help prevent the spread of MRSA in your community.

$46,000 in checks to its needy clubs. The money has already been sent to those needy clubs in the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL), Staten Island Youth Soccer League (SIYSL) and Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) for Hurricane Sandy Relief. Additionally, the LIJSL has established a Disaster Relief Fund Program of $125,000 for its members/ clubs that suffered damage as a direct result from Hurricane Sandy. Approved funds are available to be awarded. In order to be eligible to receive a LIJSL Hurricane Sandy Fund, the individual or club must be an affiliated organization with the LIJSL, ENYYSA

and US Youth Soccer. Contact the LIJSL at 631.648.9020 for more information. The East Hudson Youth Soccer League (EHYSL) was not as affected by Hurricane Sandy as its downstate neighbors so they have graciously donated $4,000 to the SIYSL and $2,000 to the LIJSL. While all these good works continue, a for-profit company, SportsSignup in Saratoga Springs, made a $10,000 donation last month to ENYYSA leagues most affected by Hurricane Sandy. The CJSL, SIYSL and LIJSL each received $3,333.

A big local and national news story of 2012 was Hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic Ocean hurricane on record, which created unprecedented destruction in New York and New Jersey in lost lives and property. Youth soccer organizations affiliated with the U.S. Youth Soccer have responded. Region 1 established a Disaster Relief Grant Program for Region 1 clubs/organizations that have suffered damage as a result of the storm. 20 grants, each up to $2,000, are being awarded. On the way to a total donation of $80,000, the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) has given

Grants Awarded

Smithtown resident Krystin Brescia, a teacher at The Children’s Center of United Cerebral Palsy Association of Suffolk, has been named a 2012-2013 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners. A special feature highlighting Ms. Brescia will air on News 12 and she will be honored at a special dinner in the spring along with the other awardees. After completing her student teaching requirements at The Children’s Center in 2004, Ms. Brescia was hired as a special education teacher. In dealing with students who have varying disabilities, including some who are nonverbal, visually or hearing impaired, and physically

or mentally challenged, Krystin is both creative and sensitive to the learning styles of each student. She works individually with each child to ensure that they are positioned to achieve their goals and gain independence. According to Sherri Glazier, Director of Education/Principal at The Children’s Center, “She is truly an advocate for her students. Ms. Brescia constantly and tirelessly seeks resources and opportunities to give her students real life experiences – such as recycling, money skills, math lessons and teamwork. Skills they will take with them when they graduate from our program. We are very fortunate to have her on our staff.” Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling’s School of Education says, “Long Island is known for having

the best teachers in the nation, and we received so many nominations from across Nassau and Suffolk, and are only able to select 12 winners. Krystin Brescia is truly a remarkable educator as evidenced by her skill, her talents, and the praise she received from parents and co-workers who nominated her.” In her remarks Ms. Brescia said she is rarely at a loss for words, but expressed deep gratitude for being nominated and selected a 2012-2013 Dowling College/News12 Educator of the Year. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Child Study with NYS certification in Early Childhood and Special Education and a Masters Degree in Early Intervention, Early Childhood Special Education from St. Joseph’s College.

The Long Island Housing Partnership, Inc. (LIHP) is pleased to announce the receipt of the generous donation of $200,000 from the Robin Hood Relief Fund. In response to Hurricane Sandy’s devastation, The Robin Hood Foundation, New York City’s largest organization in the fight against poverty, has reactivated the Robin Hood Relief Fund, initially created in response to the September 11th, 2001 RELIEF BENEFIT - Suffolk County Community College recently held a Hurricane attacks. “For 24 years, Robin Sandy Relief Benefit at the Van Nostrand Theatre on the Michael J. Grant Campus in Hood has been providing Brentwood.

housing, food and care for our neighbors in need throughout New York City, and we’re using that expert knowledge to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy,” said Robin Hood Executive Director David Saltzman in a press release this November. “The money LIHP received will greatly benefit low income families living on Long Island impacted by Hurricane Sandy. The funding will be used to provide repairs from water damages, including heating system repairs, remediation of mold,

sheetrock replacement and paint,” says Kevin Law, Chairman of LIHP. The Robin Hood Relief Fund is providing assistance to organizations throughout New York City and, for the first time, New Jersey, and Long Island. “LIHP is pleased to be working with Robin Hood here on Long Island,” says Peter J. Elkowitz, Jr., President and CEO of LIHP. “We appreciate their support to help families impacted by Sandy get back into their homes.”

Carry-On Made Easier (NAPSI)-Doing a little homework before you travel could save you time at the airport. For instance, visiting www.TSA.gov, the Transportation Security Administration’s Web site, can help you learn what

items can be packed in carry-on and which are best left in checked suitcases. You can also learn size requirements for toiletries that are allowed on planes and then find properly sized items in stores. As a final tip, remember

that all carry-on gels, liquids and aerosols need to be placed in a 1-quart, single zip-top, clear plastic bag. For more information and tips, visit www.shave. com.

Suffolk County Community College recently held a Hurricane Sandy Relief Benefit at the Van Nostrand Theatre on the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood. The purpose of the event was to raise financial support for the College Foundation Relief Fund. The benefit, which

included a night of live music and comedy entertainment, raised funds to provide assistance for members of the college community that need help replacing textbooks, computers or other electronic equipment, purchasing clothing and food, and covering costs associated with commuting

or other necessities. To learn about relief efforts currently underway at each campus, visit Suffolk County Community College’s Disaster Relief Site at: http://www.sunysuffolk. edu/About/DisasterRelief. asp.

New Beginnings Welcomed

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern, Chairman of the Veterans and Seniors Committee, welcomed Allyson Scerri, Founder and CEO and Kate DiMeglio, Vice-President of New Beginnings Community Center, a notfor-profit center founded in 2011 by Ms. Scerri after caring for her father who suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident in 2007. Ms. DiMeglio cares for an adult child with a brain injury. With a core mission of Hope, Healing and Understanding, New Beginnings provides comprehensive out-patient rehabilitation services

for those suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI), physical and cognitive disabilities and dementia. The center also serves many veterans who are suffering from TBI and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Ms. Scerri and Ms. DiMeglio addressed the committee and discussed plans to open an in-patient rehabilitation facility in Riverhead, “Brendan House” named in honor of Brendan Aykroyd, who died as a result of TBI suffered in an assault. The home will allow TBI victims to live independently while receiving needed care, counseling and support.

They hope to also open a facility in Western Suffolk to provide these services. “I am proud to welcome Ms. Scerri and Ms. DiMeglio to the Legislature,” Legislator Stern said. “Their remarkable accomplishment in opening New Beginnings is truly an inspiration. Brendan House will provide a higher level of service to our veterans and others suffering from TBI and PTSD. Their incredible dedication and ability to transform personal tragedy into such an outstanding facility brings pride and hope to the entire Suffolk County community.”

Hurricane Christmas Party

Hurricane Sandy ripped through many parts of Long Island devastating houses and people’s lives. Parents struggling to repair their homes, children being bused to other schools, wondered if Santa would be able to find them this Christmas. Boys and girls in the Lindenhurst parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help one of the areas hardest hit by the Super Storm and subsequent nor’easter -

didn’t have to worry thanks to St. Joseph Hospital located in Bethpage. “We wanted to do something special for children this year,” said St. Joseph Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer Drew Pallas. “Our staff collected toys and we had Santa, Mrs. Claus, the Snow Queen and Santa’s elves deliver gifts and hosted a party at the parish to brighten the kids’

holiday.” The event was held Tuesday, December 18th, and more than 100 children turned out for the heartwarming event. Some children asked Santa for a new home, because their homes had been destroyed by the storm. All left with toys, candy canes, a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Clause and stomachs full of hot chocolate, cupcakes and candy.

Naturally Lowering Cholesterol (NAPSI)—If living a healthier life is your cup of tea, you may be interested in an easy way to improve your health—using the natural antioxidant powers of tea. Almost half of all Americans are overweight and have dangerously high levels of cholesterol. Heart attacks are still the No. 1 killer in the U.S. The problem is that high cholesterol and your risk

may be greater than you think. According to American Heart Association guidelines, the acceptable level of “bad cholesterol” is 30 percent lower than it used to be only a few years ago. This means that millions of Americans, including those who never dreamed they were at risk, now are. Fortunately, there are natural, nonprescription

alternatives for lowering cholesterol. For example, heart-healthy products such as TeaFlavin, an all-natural, caffeine-free capsule made from tea extract, contain as much cholesterol-fighting power as 35 cups of green tea. For more information on TeaFlavin, visit www. teaflavin.com or call (800) 876-4332.

the way it transports LDL cholesterol away from the heart and back into the bloodstream. Heart-Healthy Ingredients One of the main active ingredients in Sytrinol is a group of compounds derived from the peels of citrus fruits. The two most common are tangeretin and nobiletin, which are described as extremely potent bioflavonoids. Another ingredient is a group of palm tocotrienols, which are members of the vitamin E family and are extracted from the fruit of the palm tree. Like vitamin E, palm tocotrienols control antiinflammatory responses and degrade a key enzyme used by the liver to produce cholesterol.

Helping Doctors Help Patients Stop Smoking (NAPSI)—To help protect you and your family from tobaccorelated death and disease, researchers from Legacy®, a national public health organization dedicated to building a world where anyone can quit smoking, recommend two actions: stop smoking or never start. If you do smoke or use tobacco, speak to your doctor about quitting smoking. A survey of more than 3,146 adults in the U.S. conducted by Legacy discovered that more than one in 10 smokers have concealed their smoking status from a health care provider— nearly half of them stated it was because they are ashamed that they smoke. Another reason for not disclosing this important information to a medical professional: two-thirds surveyed who did not disclose their smoking status reported not wanting to be lectured about smoking. Fortunately, health

care professionals such as doctors, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, dentists and pharmacists can help smokers by bringing up the subject with patients. To assist with that, Legacy and Pfizer have developed a downloadable, userfriendly guide for health care providers to help them discuss smoking and tobacco use with their patients. Here are hints to help: • Talk openly about smoking. Ask every patient if they smoke. This may open the door to successful intervention. • Be positive and encouraging. Smokers are often dealing with shame or fear of quitting. Congratulate the smoker on the decision to quit and reiterate how you are there to help them on their journey. • Encourage smokers not to give up. Smoking is a chronic, relapsing medical condition; the average smoker tries to quit 6/9 times in their lifetime. Remind smokers

that quitting is difficult, but can be attainable. • Make sure smokers understand smoking for what it really is: a treatable medical condition. • Suggest patients consider evidencebased treatments, such as over-the-counter or prescription medications, and refer them to counseling to help them quit. Patients can call the national toll-free quitline, (800)-QUITNOW, for free counseling or seek help from no-cost websites such as www. BecomeAnEX.org. • Arrange follow-up contact as necessary to try to prevent relapse. More than 45 million Americans currently smoke and an estimated 70 percent of them want to quit, but lack the tools to do so. Committing to quit is the crucial first step toward becoming smoke free. Speaking with your health care provider can help you during this process.

prescription medications. A New Approach One of the latest approaches to managing cholesterol involves taking a nutritional supplement. One such supplement, called Sytrinol, is described as a safe, effective cholesteroland triglyceride-lowering nutrient that is designed to begin working in 30 days. The supplement is made up of a blend of powerful antioxidants including polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) and a range of palm (alpha, delta and gamma) tocotrienols. According to a published clinical study, Sytrinol was able to significantly lower total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides. The formula is also said to increase HDL levels. This is often referred to as the “good cholesterol” because of

There’s good news for those concerned about cholesterol and their health. They may have a new way to regulate their cholesterol level that doesn’t involve prescription drugs. Cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. It is used to make many of our hormones, vitamin D and bile acids, which aid fat digestion and keep cell membranes intact. How much you have is based on a combination of genetics and lifestyle. However, too much LDL cholesterol—often referred to as “bad cholesterol”—can slowly build and contribute to heart disease and clogged arteries. Some will try to manage their cholesterol with diet and exercise while others will turn to
