A deadline is fast approaching for people to participate in an online survey on parking in Huntington Village, a key component of a study aimed at identifying the most effective and cost appropriate solutions to common and nagging parking issues in the village. The survey, which participants can access through the home page of the Town’s website, http:// huntingtonny.gov, is being conducted by the New York City firm Nelson Nygaard, which in July was retained by a consortium that includes the Town, Town of Huntington Economic Development Corp., the Huntington Village Business Improvement District, the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce and The Paramount Theater to conduct the study. Residents will have until the end of this month to participate in the survey, whose findings will be central to two meetings scheduled for next month to obtain additional input. “This is the Town’s chance to hear from you,
and all those who are most closely connected to parking conditions in the Village: its business owners, local employees, residents, shoppers, visitors, and anybody who frequents the village for its business, cultural and recreational activities,” Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said. “The survey only takes a few minutes of your time, and will help us as we explore options to address this important issue.” As part of this study, the Town will be forming two stakeholder groups. The first will consist of Huntington Village business/property owners, and the second will be made up of residents most closely affected by Huntington Village’s parking demand. Each group will consist of 8-12 persons. Anyone interested in being considered for the resident stakeholder group should email Joan Cergol at jcergol@HuntingtonNY. gov with their address and telephone number as soon as possible. The Town is seeking to finalize the stakeholder groups by the end of
January so Nelson Nygaard can meet with each group on Monday February 4th. Additionally, the Town of Huntington Economic Development Corporation will devote its Monday, February 4th, 2013 meeting at Huntington Town Hall (in Room 114 at 7p.m). to the subject of parking in Huntington Village. At the meeting, Nelson Nygaard will provide an update of their findings and residents will have an opportunity to contribute input. Finally, on Tuesday, February 26th the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce will provide an update and hear input on the parking study at its networking breakfast at the Huntington Yacht Club. Networking begins at 7:30 a.m. The breakfast and program will run from 8 to 10 a.m.. Fee is $25 for members and $30 for non-members. To register for this event contact Ellen O’Brien at the Chamber at 631.421.6100 or register directly from the Huntington Chamber’s website.

Flipping The Switch By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There comes a time when you just have to tune things out. That point when all the chaos surrounding you simply needs to be shut off and pushed aside. The moment when all the pointless discourse and frantic commotion dissolves into simple background noise. Peace and quiet‌and clarity. We all strive for this. And often, we would not find it so difficult to achieve – if not for the distraction of others. Ah, but to live a solitary life devoid of all nuisance‌what kind of existence would that be? And so we must learn to tolerate, to adjust, to find that happy medium between blatant rudeness and healthy‌
distance, shall we say. This is not to say we should be uninvolved in life; but sometimes, that fine line between being involved and being overtaken by nonsense is far too important to overlook. We should only become caught up in those things which are healthy and beneficial to us in the long run. Leave the rest behind. The problem is that, while, philosophically, this theory makes perfect sense, putting it into practice is far easier said than done when faced with reality. Anyone who deals with people on a daily basis, whether complete strangers or those near and dear, can surely attest to this fact. Love them or hate them, we are destined to clash with others more often than
not. It’s simple human nature. The trick is to save these so-called “battles for the important issues. And while, in the heat of the moment, each and every issue may seem equally dire, rest assured, they are not. Take a step back, take a deep breath, and heed the following: “Frame every so-called disaster with these words: In five years, will this matter? In most cases, the answer will be a clear and unequivocal “no. So move on. Let it go. Forgive and forget. Don’t allow yourself to get hung up on the small stuff. In five years’ time, it won’t matter. Focus on today – and finding that elusive peace within yourself.
It’s no secret that dental work can be expensive - a basic checkup is pricey enough, but if there is a problem that requires more attention, a simple toothache can turn into a costly headache. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be this way. Thousands of New Yorkers have already discovered the surefire solution with the EDP Dental Plan. For just $99 a year, members get the satisfaction of watching their dental bills get cut in half. In just one visit to the dentist, the plan often pays for itself! Since its inception more than 10 years ago, EDP Dental Plan has
carefully worked to build a network of more than 2,000 great providers located all over the state of New York, assuring that everyone can find a dentist they love. Best of all, members aren’t restricted by the same limitations presented by insurance - there is no waiting period, no yearly maximum, and anyone can join, regardless of age. Sign up with EDP Dental Plan today to start saving right away. With EDP’s substantial savings, you can’t afford to be without it! INCREASED INFLUENZA ACTIVITY ACROSS THE STATE, 2 reported pediatric influenza-related deaths on LI GET FLU SHOT ASAP! Influenza in New York State (NYS) has been widespread for the past two months and is significantly more prevalent at this time of year as compared to the past several years. To date, there have been more than 19,000 laboratory-confirmed cases reported since seasonal influenza testing began in October 2012, compared to 4,400 cases during all of the 2011-2012 influenza season. Currently, there have been 2,884 laboratory confirmed hospitalizations associated with influenza. There are 2 reported pediatric influenza-related deaths on LI. In light of the widespread influenza activity across NYS and most of the nation, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) continues to strongly advise all New Yorkers who have not already received their influenza vaccine to do so immediately. Make sure all children are immunized. PEDIATRIC IMMEDIATE CARE PROVIDES PRESERVATIVE-FREE FLU SHOTS AND NASAL SPRAY AT AT NO COST TO ALL UNDER 19 YEARS OF AGE.
and does not cause severe symptoms often associated with influenza illness. (In clinical studies, transmission of vaccine viruses to close contacts has occurred only rarely.) Side effects can include runny nose, wheezing, headache, low grade fever, muscle aches and vomiting. Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu? A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated. • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage. • Stay away from people who are sick. • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. • If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area. • Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by
wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label). Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of withholding vaccines? A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable. I hope this helps you to better understand what the flu is, and how you can protect yourself and your family from getting this illness. I wish you health and happiness. If I can be of further assistance, please let me know. Urszula K Rakowska, MD, FAAP, MBA, CPE Assistant Professor of Pediatric Emergency Medicine 631.864.7337 or gp@pediatricimmediatecare.com
Get Vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2012-2013 season vaccine is available in your area. If you do contract the flu, talk to your doctor about antivirals. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that can be used for prevention or treatment of flu viruses. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them. • Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose. • Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself. • Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death, especially in the very young or old, pregnant women or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. Q: Who should get the flu vaccine? A: Beginning this year with the 2012-2013 influenza season, the CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine each year. The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each year. Q: Where can I get a free vaccine for my child? A: Pediatric Immediate Care in Smithtown offers free vaccinations for all children under 19, no co-pay for adults under 65. Call 631.864.7337 to get your preservative-free flu vaccine. Q: What types of vaccinations are available? A: The two types of flu vaccines are: • The “flu shot”: an inactivated vaccine which contains killed virus that is given by injection. It is approved for use in people 6 months of age and older, including healthy people, people with chronic medical conditions and pregnant women. • The nasal spray flu vaccine: a vaccine made with live, but weakened, flu virus that cannot cause the flu in a healthy person. This is approved for use in healthy people 2-49 years old (not pregnant). Q: What are the Side Effects of the two vaccine types? A: Different side effects can be associated with the flu shot and nasal vaccine. The flu shot: You cannot get the flu from a flu shot. Some minor side effects that could occur are: soreness, redness, or swelling at the site of injection, low-grade fever, muscle aches. If they are going to occur at all, they begin soon after the vaccination and usually last 1 to 2 days. Almost all people who receive influenza vaccine have no problems from it. The nasal spray: The nasal-spray vaccine has weakened viruses

Our Living Planet
Fifth-grade students of Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District had the opportunity to experience Our Living Planet, a demonstration led by Richard Brundige of the Night Sky Starlab
astronomy program. The interactive session provided students with a lesson in geography and science through the use of a very large, drawn-toscale replica of the earth. “This is a wonderful way for students to build upon the geographical
knowledge they have developed in class,” said Mr. Brundige. “They learn about continents, oceans, global warming and how to read a physical map of the earth, all while sitting inside of it!”
The Caumsett Foundation is proud to announce it has been awarded a $300,000 matching grant from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The State funds (along with matching funds raised by the Foundation) will be used to repair the brick wall, which surrounds the historic Walled Garden at Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve. Built more than 90 years ago when Marshall Field III developed his 1500-acre estate, the 8’ high, 1200’ long wall encloses the four-acre space, one of the
most significant features of the Park. Considerable deterioration has made the structure a safety hazard requiring immediate attention. Restoration of the garden itself began in 2000 and this grant, combined with the funds raised by the Foundation, will allow work to continue. Maintaining the garden is part of the Foundation’s environmental initiative, which is working to encourage the biodiversity of plants, animals and insects. The Walled Garden is one of the most popular public locations in the Park, and

Twenty talented music students from Music Simply Music, Long Island’s leading in-home music education program, paid a visit recently to the Momentum at South Bay for Rehabilitation & Nursing Home in East Islip to stage a cheerful musical performance for elderly residents and patients. As part of its “Share My Music” community outreach program, Music Simply Music arranged for 20 of its students ranging in age from 8 to 40 to play specially-learned songs for residents from the 1930’s and 1940’s, including nostalgic piano pieces, acoustic guitar and vocals. “Over 40 Momentum residents were treated to an afternoon of music, thanks to our talented,

Tri-CYA Toy Drive Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci recently joined the staff at Tri Community and Youth Agency (Tri CYA) to support their Annual Holiday Toy Drive. Lupinacci collected donations of unwrapped toys which were distributed to children in the Huntington, South Huntington and Cold Spring Harbor communities. “During the holiday season, many families can feel the pinch of these difficult economic times, but having an organization like Tri CYA working to provide children with that special toy or book makes
the time a more enjoyable experience for the children of families in need,” said Lupinacci. “The generosity of people throughout our communities was overwhelming and I would like to thank Debbie and everyone at Tri CYA for their time and energy. While the holidays aren’t just about boxes and bows, seeing the smiles on the faces of these children is heartwarming for all involved. Once again, I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone for their participation.” Tri CYA is a private, not-for-profit communitybased agency dedicated
to supporting the growth and development of youth and their families in the communities of Huntington, South Huntington and Cold Spring Harbor. For more than 30 years, Tri CYA has provided a broad range of educational, recreational, social, cultural, athletic, counseling and advocacy programs, working closely and cooperatively with businesses, school districts, law enforcement, community groups, government agencies and religious organizations as well as with individuals, parents and youth community volunteers.

The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York is inviting high-schoolaged orchestral and vocal musicians to audition for the group’s July 2013 concert tour of Central Europe. The touring MYO Orchestra and Chorus will visit and perform through Germany, Austria and Switzerland. An optional, additional week of touring will be in France. The ensembles have embarked on several international tours over the past years with
concert visits to Central and Eastern Europe, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, China, Spain, Italy, Greece and, last year, to Australia and New Zealand. John McNeur, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, said, “This has proven to be a lifechanging experience for so many young people. Beyond the incredible experience of spreading goodwill through their music, the musicians have had so many opportunities

to interact with people of very different cultures. The experiences lived by the young musicians have become the inspiration for countless college essays and, of course, unbelievable memories.” Those wishing more information on the tour, including a detailed itinerary, are encouraged to visit the orchestra’s John T. January is National Stalking Awareness Month, and Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco wants to bring more awareness to this crime that affects approximately 6.6 million victims each year. Stalking is a complex crime characterized by a course of conduct directed at a specific person that would cause that person fear. Stalking may take many forms, such as assaults, threats, vandalism, burglary, or animal abuse, as well as unwanted cards, calls, gifts, or visits. Stalkers will also use technology, such as computers, global positioning system devices, or hidden cameras, to track
a victim’s daily activities. Sheriff DeMarco advises individuals who are victimized by stalking behavior to keep accurate records of their perpetrator’s actions and to seek help from law enforcement and the courts. “Always call 911 if you are in any immediate danger, and trust your instincts. Begin to collect any emails, phone messages, notes and any other evidence when you feel uncomfortable in your interactions with another individual,” he said. “Information collected over the course of time can be very helpful to law enforcement and if you need to seek a court order

She also is active with Blanca’s House, a nonprofit organization of volunteer healthcare professionals who donate their time to provide free, invaluable medical treatment to children and their families who would otherwise have no access to modern health care. O’Sullivan has participated in several missions to Central America and this summer hosted an underprivileged child from Ecuador who needed surgery for a cleft palate. The child and her mother stayed at O’Sullivan’s home for six months, during which time O’Sullivan cared for the child. O’Sullivan is the second Mather Emergency Department nurse to
receive the award in the three years it has been given. Liz Devine, RN, Mather’s Emergency Department Nursing Manager, was the first recipient of the award. The Suffolk County Emergency Nurses Association represents 12 hospitals in Suffolk County, with more than 300 members.

Legislator Tom Cilmi recently honored Probation Officer Rachel Hernandez in recognition of her exemplary work resulting in the arrest of gang members, taking illegal weapons off the street and helping a young woman cope with her rape.
“Our Probation Officers are the unsung heroes of our public safety team in Suffolk County. Their jobs put them face to face with criminals on a daily basis and their work, in no small way, keeps our streets safe. Not only did Probation Officer Hernandez do her
job, but her compassion and understanding gave a rape victim the courage to testify against her assailants. She is a shining example of a department filled with stars,” stated Legislator Cilmi.

Community Foundation Grant The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is set to receive a $25,000 grant from the Long Island Community Foundation (LICF) to support the creation of a brand new Military Families in Training (M-FIT) Program designed to educate, support, and strengthen military families. Addiction rates among active duty soldiers, returning veterans and the spouses of service men and women are several times higher than rates seen in the general population. Many of the 175,000
returning soldiers who call Long Island “home” bear the scars of war in the form of untreated mental health issues and active addiction. Major depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are prevalent in this population. Each of those 175,000 returning soldiers has 4-6 immediate family members who, without family centered services, are at increased risk for a wide variety of mental health disorders and other challenges. M-FIT is a dynamic, evidence-based approach to providing military
families with the support they need to live healthy lives. The six-week psycho-educational workshop series targets the root causes of stress and substance abuse in order to end the cycle of addiction. Participants will learn how to deal with stress of deployment, combat and the re-transition back home. The series will seek to enhance family empathy and communication, clarify family boundaries, roles and responsibilities, and strengthen family resiliency among returning service members and their loved ones.
The program is open to returning service man and women, their partners, spouses and parents, as well as their children ages 5-15. The six-week series will launch in Southampton, Riverhead, Huntington and Mineola in early 2013, and is expected to serve more than 100 military families on Long Island. “War takes an incredible toll on the emotional and mental health of our veterans and unfortunately they often find themselves fighting another kind of battle at home,” said David Okorn, executive director of LICF. “LICADD
provides our heroes and their families with the counseling and treatment they need and deserve.” LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds says support for M-FIT comes at the perfect time. “With a documented upswing in addiction rates among military members and their families, it is essential that we address the needs of this community and this grant from the Long Island Community Foundation will help make that possible.” The Long Island Community Foundation (LICF) is the Island’s community
foundation, making grants to improve our region and helping donors with their philanthropy since 1978. Are you or someone you love, a returning veteran adjusting to life at home? M-FIT can provide you with military familyfocused services that can ease the stress and tension you may be feeling during the transition. For more information about M-FIT, or any of LICADD’s prevention education, substance abuse counseling and/or treatment referral services, please call 516.747.2606 or visit www.licadd.org.
Advisory Board, arranged for the bus to be donated by We Transport in Nassau County. The vehicle was painted by volunteers from Splashes of Hope, a non-profit agency based in Huntington, NY. Penny’s North Country Car Care in St. James, NY, donated repair services. Through an online voting co-sponsored by Warex Terminals Corporation and CITGO Petroleum Corporation and
its Fueling Good program, Stony Brook University Hospital employees helped win $5,000 in free gas for the vehicle. “This is a unique hospital-based program,” Bily said. “Obtaining and refurbishing the bus was a true community partnership in every sense of the word.” For more information, call 631.638.0913 or 631.638.0004.
Bus Service Introduced Stony Brook University Cancer Center has initiated a free transportation service for cancer patients to and from their homes throughout Suffolk County in an effort to provide access to care for patients who need chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and have limited resources to get to the Cancer Center. The Non-Emergency Transportation (NET) program began in
November and operates Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Recommendations for the service come from Cancer Center social workers; already more than 25 transports have been made. To qualify for the service, patients complete an application signed by their medical provider. According to Yusuf Hannun, MD, Director, Stony Brook University
Cancer Center, Vice Dean, Cancer Medicine, and the Joel Kenny Professor of Medicine, most patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy require frequent visits to the hospital. “Transportation has been an obstacle for many of our patients who live in Suffolk County,” said Dr. Hannun. “Offering free transportation to and from the Cancer Center is one
more way we can serve our patients and ease the burden of their treatment journey.” The idea of the transportation service was initiated by Linda Bily, Cancer Patient Advocacy & Community Outreach Coordinator, and Darlene Kenny, LCSW, Social Worker at the Cancer Center. Debbie Wunderlich, a member of the Cancer Center’s
Noted Lecturer The large meeting room at the Suffolk Cooperative Library System (SLS) was full with school librarians from across the county who had questions about teaching the new standards. Guest speaker and author Dr. Marc Aronson, hosted by the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Library System (SLS), was there to discuss the implementation of the new Common Core State Standards. “The evolution of K-12 education is upon us,” he said, “and
school librarians are the foundation in creating a common core community.” The new education standards in English/ language arts and mathematics, adopted by 45 states including New York, will prepare students for life after 12th grade. These standards have taken Dr. Aronson down a path of guiding librarians to be, he said, “…in this new world that promotes culling and curating from every source to give young
people opportunities to be in the debate as new ideas come forward. How we change education, librarianship, print and digital books, apps, is important. We need to immerse young people not in receiving knowledge, but in the pursuit of knowledge,” he explained. “Thinking is endorphins for the brain.” His presentation was titled Common Core, Uncommon Challenge.
shelter program. With the support of an Options case manager, families find stability and are assisted in their search for safe, affordable housing. By helping families who struggle to provide their children with basic essentials on a daily basis, Options, in partnering with the Payless GivesTM Shoes 4 Kids program, hopes to relieve some of the stress parents feel particularly during the holidays and to bring joy to as many families as possible.
