I was recently asked to deliver the keynote address for a High School Journalism Awards Luncheon & Ceremony, to be held at my alma mater, the (formerly known as) C.W. Post campus of Long Island University.

Wow. The keynote address.

Only nine years removed from college myself, and here I am expected to speak intelligently for 20 minutes to a crowd of (hopefully) eager, bright-eyed high school students about the highs and lows of the Journalism industry, the track of my career, the “war stories” of dealing with 20-something editions of a weekly newspaper and each and every piece of editorial content contained within them… a rather

daunting task.

Never the fan of public speaking, my first thought was, 20 minutes?! Of speaking in front of a crowd of complete strangers?! By myself?!

ButthenItookadeepbreathand truly considered the prospect…

Wow, what an honor to be asked.

Imagine how many Journalism students have come and gone through that program over the years… some have probably gone on to achieve amazing success in the field; others may have decided to pursue another career path entirely – all making their own distinct marks.

And then there was me, going from the staff of the Charles Street Times in high school, to the staff of the Pioneer in college, to the board of the Press Club of Long

Island…working my way from editorial assistant, to associate editor to managing editor here at South Bay – all while accumulating quite the pile of column clippings.

Sure, many have gone on to greater things – and hopefully this is just the beginning of a similarly fruitful career for me – but the most important thing, I feel, is to remember where you started from and the process by which you ultimately achieved your dreams. It all begins with family, is supplemented by schooling and finally becomes cemented with “real world” work experience. All part of the package, all part of the path to success.

Now…if only I could manage to expand that philosophy into a 20-minute keynote address!

DeLuise founded and is president of the Melville Chamber of Commerce, one of Long Island’s fastest growing business groups, and co-chair of the Huntington Station Action NOW Coalition’s public awareness committee.

He has also served as vice president of the Vanderbilt Museum board, president of the Long Island Advertising Club, chair of the Long Island Convention and Visitors Bureau and a member of the board of directors of

Friends of Long Island Heritage. He has been recognized by the Public Relations Professionals of Long Island with their Lifetime Achievement Award and was named 2012 Person of the Year by the Long Islander Newspapers.

The Town of Huntington Economic Development Corporation (EDC) is a not-for-profit corporation that was established by the Huntington Town Board in 2003 to foster economic development and business opportunities throughout the Town. At present the EDC’s ninemember volunteer board of directors is working on numerous revitalization projects in Huntington Station to improve its public infrastructure and cultivate downtown redevelopment.

The Long Island Housing Partnership (LIHP) was named a Finalist in the Social Impact category in The Inaugural Long Island Imagine Awards.

Rotary Meeting

The Town of Huntington took title recently to a oneacre piece of property in Fort Salonga that will be used to protect natural open space and to provide a small gravel parking area to enable safe access to the northern trailhead to the Makamah Nature Preserve across the street.

The Town paid the Roberg family $350,000 for the parcel, which is located just north of the intersection of Makamah and Breeze Hill Roads.

The narrow road width, winding road alignment, and fast speed of cars on Makamah Road had made parking along the western road edge dangerous and contributed to erosion of the road bank in close proximity of freshwater wetlands. Purchase of the parcel will allow the Town to address both situations.

“The Town has been working for some time to acquire this property, both for its environmental significance and for how the Town can now make it easier and safer for residents to access the Makamah Nature Preserve trail,” Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said. “I appreciate the Roberg family’s patience in working with us throughout the acquisition process.”

The Fort Salonga Association supported the Town acquisition, which was funded through the Huntington Environmental Open Space and Park Fund Program.

The parcel lies within the Crab Meadow Watershed Area, a region that drains toward Long Island Sound.

A hydrology study and stewardship plan for the Crab Meadow Watershed are about to be initiated with grant support from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

The acquired property, which will be named the Davis Brickmaker Preserve, was once used to mine brick molding sand and was critical to the operation of historic brickworks in the area.

Molding sand was used to line forms for bricks.

In the heyday of the brickmaking operation, workers would transport the sand by wheelbarrows to the end of Makamah Road. The old pilings of the brickworks still remain along the frontage of the Town’s Geisslers Beach.

Bruce Roberg, who as trustee handled the sale of his mother’s property, informed Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone at the January 17th closing that he had only

recently learned that it was always his grandmother’s wish that a portion of the property should go to the Town. The family once owned 80 acres that stretched from Breeze Hill Road to NYS Route 25A. The acquisition process has been a lengthy one, since the parcel had to be split from a larger parcel through the County Health Department subdivision process.

Supervisor Petrone thanked Mr. Roberg for his patience in working with the Town to enable purchase of the property for the benefit of Huntington residents.

Local wildlife, such as deer, turkey, fox, opossums and raccoons, will benefit as well.

The Roberg site is the 31st parcel acquired under the Town EOSPA Program.

A total of 240 acres has been purchased and protected since the Town’s first EOSPA acquisition in 1999. Several acquisitions are pending and will close this year, having been authorized and funded by the Town Board already.

Included will be the 12.4acre Carpenter Farm in Huntington, 8-acre Meyers Farm in Melville and 5-acre Erb Property in Dix Hills.

On December 12th, The Rotary Club of Northport held their monthly meeting at St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center.

Resident Harold Howe, an honorary member of the Rotary Club and who was an active member for 48 years, attended. President Andy Giffin wanted to

hold their meeting at St. Catherine’s in honor of Harold. The Rotary Club is very active in the community and do such wonderful things such as provide food for the food pantry, holiday helper programs for families in need, international services such as the Haiti Project and offer scholarships to

local high school students.

“It was a pleasure having them as guests at St. Catherine’s and to have Howard join them for their meeting,” stated James Ryan, Administrator of St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center.

Interfaith Breakfast

On January 24th, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone hosted an interfaith breakfast with religious leaders from throughout Suffolk County.

The gathering served as a commemoration of the National Day of Prayer which took place on January 22nd in Washington D.C. and provided an opportunity for the County Executive to meet with Suffolk County’s religious leaders at the start of the new year.

Over 25 leaders came together to fellowship with County Executive Bellone.

Bellone spoke about his

economic vision for the County and the importance of establishing and cultivating relationships with religious leaders.

Bellone stated, “We are fortunate to live in a County that has a diverse population. I believe that it is this diversity that makes Suffolk County a desirable place to live and thrive.

You as religious leaders are an important component of that diversity as you promote inclusiveness and tolerance for all.”

Bellone also invited Suffolk County Deputy Police Commissioner, Risco Mention-Lewis

and Lt. Bob Donohue to address the leaders and apprise them of the work of the Suffolk County Police Department in implementing strategies to break the cycle of recidivism and engaging community leaders to work collaboratively with the police department and precincts.

Bellone concluded the gathering with an opportunity for questions from the clergy and promised to keep the lines of communication open with Suffolk County’s religious leaders.

CELEBRATING ELVIS - On January 22nd, residents at St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center celebrated Elvis Presley’s birthday with a sock hop. Residents participated in team games focused on 1950’s trivia. The Therapeutic Recreational staff served root beer floats and dressed in bobby socks and pedal pushers for the occasion. This was a fun celebration for the residents to enjoy some good music, entertainment and reminisce about fun times.

On December 2nd, Sally Garito, a resident at Good Samaritan Nursing Home celebrated her 100th birthday. Sally was born in New York and was a homemaker where she raised two children Valerie and Greg.

Sally has been a resident at Good Samaritan Nursing Home since July 2012, where she is an avid reader and loves crocheting and knitting. Sally is an animal

lover who has fallen in love with Maureen, the pet therapy dog at Good Samaritan Nursing Home who visits weekly.

To celebrate this special day, a birthday celebration was held at Good Samaritan Nursing Home with her family, staff and friends.

When asked what advice Sally has for the younger generations, she replied, “Live a clean life: be good to yourself and the people

around you. Be grateful for the things in your life like a loving family and beautiful friends. We must all be thankful for what we have.”

Sally is blessed today to share her life with her two children, five grandchildren and five great-children and Good Samaritan Nursing Home is blessed to share it with her.

Ten professional organizers from Nassau and Suffolk counties recently donated their skills and services to the Women’s Fund of Long Island, an organization that provides social change grantmaking, job skills training, education and leadership development to women and girls.

Members of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) group POLI, celebrated National Get Organized (GO) Month in January by organizing the Jericho executive office as well as disposing seven years of clutter. GO Month takes place each January to raise awareness of the benefits of hiring a professional organizer and getting organized.

The goal of the event was to organize every office and provide easy-to-manage storage solutions so that

staff can easily locate and work with files. Diana Soll, of Grand Solutions LLC said, “It’s amazing what can be accomplished when people come together for a great cause. When a space is organized, it not only provides easy accessibility, it generates positive energy.”

In two days, NAPO organizers reorganized: • All stationary and supply closets • The kitchen and conference room • The program and finance offices, • The director and executive director’s Office • All bookcases • The attic space In addition, NAPO organizers sorted through hundred of pounds of paper, old office equipment and furniture that had accumulated over the last seven years. Executive

Director Stacey Scarpone said, “This has been an outstanding way for us to inspire and raise staff morale with limited resources. And the idea that 10 professional women would volunteer their time and resources to an organization dedicated to serving women and girls is an amazing philanthropic model.”

In addition to the hands-on organizing, Fung Shui Consultant, Maureen Calamia provided a free consultation which included suggestions of color, furniture arrangement, and other elements which will be considered in the final phase in the near future.

Director of Operations Erica Hecht summarized it best, “The air and the energy here is different. It is inspiring!”

Explorer Post Honored

On Sunday, January 27th, Legislator John M. Kennedy Jr., Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature, honored the Suffolk County Police Department Fourth Precinct’s Explorer Post 410 at a breakfast celebrating the Explorers both current and past and the accomplishments they have achieved at the Watermill Inn. “The Explorers exemplify admiration, compassion and have always been an integral part of our community,” said Legislator Kennedy.

The Suffolk County Explorers, Post 410, has been an active post since 1975 and is sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America Learning for Life program and is administered by

the Suffolk County Police Department’s Fourth Precinct. It is goal oriented for those individuals between the ages of 14 and 21 years of age whom would like to pursue law enforcement as a possible career choice.

The breakfast was an opportunity to bring Explorer alumni together with the current troop of over 20 members.

Explorer alumni from the NYPD, FDNY, EMT, correction officers, Suffolk County Police Department and various other law enforcement agencies attended the event to share their journeys from the time they were Explorers to their current positions.

Although Exploring is a “learning for life” program it is also a public service

program. The members are asked to assist the Suffolk County Police Department at details such as walkathons, parades, fairs, and Kid-Kare ID programs.

Explorers Post 410 meets every other Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Suffolk County Police Department’s Fourth Precinct located at 345 Old Willets Path, Hauppauge, New York. Suffolk County Deputy Inspector Armando Valencia and Officer Guy Gourlay who administers the Explorers, oversaw the event.

On Wednesday January 23rd, Buddy Valastro, Owner, Carlo’s Bakery and star of TLC’s hit show Cake Boss opened the doors to his Jersey City commercial bakery to a young Good Shepherd Hospice patient who’s one wish was to meet Buddy and bake him a cake!

Thanks to the tireless efforts of Good Shepherd Hospice Child Life Specialist Elizabeth Olsen, Stephanie Lopez, 17, originally from El Salvador but currently residing in Centereach, was able to present her cake to Buddy and many of his talented

staff and co-workers during a very special tour of the bakery.

“Stephanie is such a special girl, said Valastro.

“She’s so young, but already has had to fight harder than most people do in their entire lives.”

Buddy spent an hour teaching Stephanie to shape and colorize the chocolate mold into the beautiful roses we all admire as decoration on cake tops. Stephanie, an avid baker, impressed the Cake Boss crew with her talents for baking and decorating.

Valastro also said “It

makes me so happy to spend time with young people like Stephanie. I want to do everything I can to help these kids and if visiting the bakery, making a cake, having a cannoli will make their day, I am more than happy to do it.”

Spending the afternoon with Buddy and his gracious staff was amazing for Stephanie and her family. When her aunt pointed out she hadn’t smiled while with Buddy, Stephanie said “I was so nervous and excited my lip was trembling!”

Volunteers Needed Family and Children’s Association is seeking volunteers for its longstanding Ombudservice Program, part of a statewide network of certified volunteers who visit nursing homes, adult homes, and assisted living facilities in Nassau County.

Ombudspersons serve as advocates for residents and their families.

Mentoring Intel Finalists

Stony Brook University faculty have mentored four of the 40 high school students chosen as finalists in the prestigious 2013 Intel Science Talent Search which accounts for 10 percent of the 40 finalists announced by Intel. All four finalists participated in the Simons Summer Research Program at Stony Brook University where they worked in Stony Brook University labs with Stony Brook faculty members and graduate students. Two finalists hail from Long Island, one is from California and another from Oregon.

“Stony Brook University consistently mentors and develops some of the top high school research talent in the nation,” said Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, President, Stony Brook University. “I congratulate the four finalists on this great accomplishment; and I tip my hat to the faculty and graduate students that selflessly give of their time to take these young researchers under their wings teaching them how to do research properly. This continued success is a testament to the vast opportunities provided by Stony Brook and the quality of research, education and discovery that happens here every day.”

The four students and their Stony Brook University mentors are: Kevin Chen, Mission San Jose HS, Fremont, California, worked with Dr. Matthew Dawber in the Department of Physics & Astronomy on the Development of a Low-Cost Analyzer for Ferroelectric Characterization.

Mayuri Sridhar, Kings Park HS, Kings Park, New York, worked with Dr. Carlos Simmerling in the Department of Chemistry on Computational Analysis of the DNA-Binding Mechanism of the p53 Tumor Suppressor and its Inactivation through the R249S Mutation.

Raghav Tripathi, Westview HS, Portland, Oregon, worked with Dr. Iwao Ojima in the Department of Chemistry and Director of the Institute of Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery on Design and Synthesis of Novel Fatty Acid Binding Protein Inhibitors for Analgesic and Anti-Inflammatory Effects through Increases in Endogenous Anandamide Concentrations. (Tripathi also placed sixth overall in the 2012 Siemens competition finals.)

Michael Zhang, Smithtown HS East, St. James, New York, worked with Dr. Gregory Zelinsky in the Department of Psychology on RoleInducted Perspective Visual Behavior during Scene Free-Viewing.

“I am especially proud that, year after year, Stony Brook University continues to be an incubator for developing young scientists, especially in the nationally critical STEM disciplines,” said Dennis N. Assanis, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. “I would also like to thank the faculty mentors in our Simons Summer Research Program who worked with four out of 40, or 10 percent, of this year’s Intel finalists.”

In early January, it was announced that 35 of the 300 Intel semifinalists nationwide (27 of 53 from Long Island) were mentored at Stony Brook University, bringing the total to 393 semifinalists mentored by Stony Brook faculty members since 1997. Additionally, 47 Intel finalists have been mentored at Stony Brook since 1997.

These four finalists will head to Washington D.C. on March 7th for a weeklong event where they will have an opportunity to compete for a share of $630,000 in awards, with the top winner receiving $100,000 from the Intel Foundation.

Students

will undergo a rigorous judging process and meet with national leaders. Top winners will be announced at a black-tie gala awards ceremony at the National Building Museum on March 12th.

In the 2012 Intel Science Talent Search, the overall grand prize winner Nithin Tumma, a recipient of a $100,000 scholarship, was mentored at Stony Brook University by Dr. Berhane Ghebrehiwet, a Professor of Medicine and Pathology in the Stony Brook University School of Medicine. Stony Brook mentors have had tremendous success in guiding students to successful outcomes in high school science competitions. In addition to mentoring a number of semifinalists and finalists in both the Intel and Siemens competitions, Dr. Iwao Ojima, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry, mentored Janelle Schlossberger and Amanda Marinoff, the grand prize winners (team category) in the 2007 Siemens competition; and Dr. Carlos Simmerling, Department of Chemistry, mentored Ruoyi Jiang, the individual grand prize winner in the 2009 Siemens competition. Additionally, in 2001, Dr. Miriam Rafailovich, Professor of Materials Science & Engineering, mentored Siemens competition grand prize winners (team category) Shira Billet and Dora Sosnowik.

Photography Contest A Success

St. Joseph Hospital’s photo contest winners were announced on January 17th. The winners in each category were presented with $150 for first place, $100 for second and $50 for third. An honorable mention received $25.

The “Best of Show” winner, Bobbie Turner, was presented with a Nikon COOLPIX S6300 camera!

Ms. Turner’s amazing photo is of a very popular waterfall on the southern coast of Iceland called Skogafoss. Ms. Turner was

admiring the falls with its constant beautiful rainbow when she saw two people running up to the falls and away from the mist. “From my perspective, it looked like they were running into the rainbow! I waited until they were into the rainbow and SNAP - thus the photo. I hope all the visitors and patients at St. Joseph Hospital get the same feeling of joy and awe that I had at this site,” said Ms. Turner.

The winning photos are displayed in the hospital with the hopes of putting a smile on the faces of our patient, visitors, medical staff and employees. Launching Careers

Stony Brook University students conducting offcampus internships have tremendous opportunities to launch careers in their chosen fields upon graduation. Such is the case with Janice Tsang, a December 2012 graduate with a BS in Business Management, who conducted her internship as a financial reporting and analysis intern with Duke Energy Corporation, a Fortune 250 company based in Charlotte, North Carolina. As a result of this internship, Janice has been offered a job with a Big Four public accounting firm.

For her achievements, she has also been recognized by the Stony Brook University Career Center and the Stony Brook Alumni Association as the winner of the Off-Campus Internship contest.

The Off-Campus Internship Contest is a competition designed to acknowledge and identify students participating in career-related off-campus internships for conducting exceptional work and achieving measurable accomplishments. The top three winners receive a cash prize from the Alumni Association, $250 for first, $150 for second and $100 for third, respectively.

“Internships are incredibly valuable to students,” said Sherry K. Sussman, MD, ‘ 91, ‘95, President of the Stony Brook Alumni Association.

“And those students, who fully appreciate that value and offer their best efforts to the employer, reflect well on Stony Brook and deserve to be rewarded.”

Tsang, from Kew Gardens Hills, NY, spent her Duke Energy internship preparing SEC reports and providing expenditure reports for the controller and chief financial officer.

She recalled learning new tagging programs for SEC filings and the Oracle Hyperion Financial Management program.

“Being able to see the work

I have done throughout the summer come into play was definitely an eyeopener for me,” she said.

Sarah Kaufmann, Director of Consolidation at Duke Energy, described Janice as a “detail oriented, focused” worker who “asked good questions and had a positive attitude.” Her work ethic ensured the “Corporate Reporting team met the second quarter reporting deadline and improved the quality of the report filed; she has an energy and enthusiasm that is unmatched by her peers,” wrote Ms. Kaufmann. As a result of this internship, Janice has secured a full-time position with PricewaterhouseCoopers beginning in July 2013.

“The Career Center honors exploration and boldness,” said Alfreda James, Assistant Director, Graduate Student and Post Doc Career Services at the Stony Brook University Career Center. “By taking themselves off-campus and out of the classroom, these students toss out routines, learn to adapt to new settings, and reevaluate their concepts of professionalism. They have taken charge of projects and developed a sense of high-level personal accountability for positive outcomes.”

Elaina Anderson, from Orchard Park, NY, a senior seeking a BE in Engineering Sciences with a Minor in Business Management took second place in the internship contest. She conducted her internship in the Radiation Detection and Nuclear Science group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, WA, where she was taught “the fundamentals of nuclear science and granted access to state-of-the-art radiation detectors.”

Misha Mehta, from West Nyack, NY, a senior, seeking a BA in Psychology, finished third in the internship

contest. She worked as an editorial intern for the Art and Science of Somatic Praxis, a journal of the U.S. Association for Body Psychotherapy, which is described as a science and art “that has developed over the last 75 years from the results of research in biology, anthropology, proxemics, ethology, neurophysiology, developmental psychology, neonatology, perinatal studies and many more disciplines.”

“This contest gives us an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate student off-campus internship experiences,” said Nikki Barnett, Senior Career Counselor at the Stony Brook University Career Center. “Often, students don’t realize their peers are applying for and engaging in offcampus career-related experiences; by tracking these experiences we are increasing opportunities for Stony Brook students, and showcasing their outstanding achievements.”

Applications are now being accepted for the Spring 2013 Off-Campus Internship Contest. The deadline is April 15, 2013.
