Spring has sprung. That’s it. I’ve decided. One sunny day amid a week of snow and sleet and rain, and it’s official. Enough of this winter wonderland nonsense. Funny, since we have really only had one substantial snowstorm over the course of the last three or so winters; but the one was… well, quite a storm, shall we say. And just like that, all the relatively pleasant winters of the past few years have been forgotten – wiped out from the collective memory. Isn’t that always the way? One season gives way to the

next – and we, as a society, go from complaining about the cold, to whining about the spring rain, to being exhausted by the oppressive heat…and then, oh no, here comes that autumn chill again! One endless cycle of wishing for something other than what we have, only to promptly wish it away as soon as it’s within our grasp. We are a flaky bunch, aren’t we? And to think other societies would give anything to live in a temperate climate such as ours, complete with four seasons – and the occasional natural disaster of course. Seriously, in the last year or

two, we’ve experienced two substantial hurricanes, a blizzard of epic proportions, a minor earthquake…am I forgetting anything else? Dare we ask – what next? Well, what’s next for me is spring. Beautiful, mild, clear and crisp. Spring. My favorite season, when the summer is still looming, everything is blooming and the days take on a renewed, vital energy that has been missing throughout the long winter of hibernation and doldrums. Sure, it may officially be a month or so away – but the mentality is here now. Embrace it.

Employees from various divisions and locations of Catholic Health Services (CHS) and the CHS Continuing Care Division were seeing red on February 1st, as part of National Wear Red Day celebration to benefit the American Heart Association (AHA). National Wear Red Day for Women is a massive national public awareness

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern was recently invited to address the annual Half Hollow Hills Parent Teacher Student Association’s (PTSA) Annual Legislative Brunch. This event, sponsored by the PTSA Legislation Committee, provides an opportunity for elected officials to speak with students, faculty and administration officials about local concerns and to share important information about issues in

our community. Legislator Stern discussed legislation that he co-sponsored to study placing emergency notification systems in schools to enable staff to reach the police more quickly in the event of an emergency. “The Legislation Committee provides a unique opportunity for these bright and engaged students to meet their elected officials and to share their ideas and perspectives,” Legislator

Stern said. “These students also join me every year at the Legislature, where they have the opportunity to see our government in action and learn more about the importance of local government in their everyday lives. Keynote Speaker

Suffolk County Legislator William R. Spencer was selected by the Town of Huntington to be the Keynote Speaker at their very popular AfricanAmerican History Month Celebration last week. Previous Keynote Speakers have included: noted authors, religious figures, academics, community advocates and Supreme Court Judges. The event, typically standing-room only, was filled with great music, singing, and special presentations. The festivities culminated in the keynote address and then participants shared a special meal together in a true spirit of community at the Jack Abrams Intermediate School in Huntington Station. “I am deeply moved by the honor bestowed upon me by the Town of Huntington,” stated Legislator Spencer. “Supervisor Petrone and the Town Council have historically chosen exceptional individuals to honor at this event and I was truly humbled that they chose to include me

in that small group of esteemed speakers. It was an amazing night spent with the most warm and wonderful people.” Huntington Town Supervisor Frank Petrone and members of the Town Board, in conjunction with the Town’s Division of Minority Affairs have hosted this event that typically draws hundreds of residents in celebration of Black History Month for over 26 years. This year they made the decision to invite Spencer, a local resident who is a husband, father, educator, pilot, reverend, physician and Suffolk County Legislator to provide the public his perspective about what the event means locally in the shadow of a national discussion about race, equality and improving the quality of life for all Americans. Legislator Spencer did not disappoint. Starting his speech with words of humble gratitude, Spencer sang the praises of our community, its leaders and residents. He reminded us all that we live in one of the greatest

places on earth. If we work hard and in a peaceful, compassionate way, we can bring about great change. He spoke about the legacy that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. left behind and challenged people to continue that legacy. “Our work is not done,” Spencer stated. “We still have much to do to bring about the equality Dr. King spoke about. We must continue to work for freedom and justice in economics, jobs, housing, health care, and education.” Spencer also seized the opportunity to call upon all elected officials, community leaders and residents from all walks of life to join him in elevating the level of discourse and continuing the conversation about how we, as a community, can work our way toward becoming colorblind in our lives and policies. With faith, Spencer believes, we can transform our world, big and small, into what Dr. King called a “beautiful symphony of brotherhood.”

Art Of Collecting Northport Historical Society will celebrate the opening of its newest exhibition, Northport Collects II, on Sunday, February 24th with a special reception beginning at 2 p.m. At 3 p.m., Society member Henry Tobin will discuss the collection of Ming Dynasty items which are a part of the exhibition. Building on last year’s exhibition celebrating the Society’s 50th anniversary, which highlighted some of the treasures of its Collection, this exhibition showcases the collections of several Society members. “Everyone collects something,”

explains Director Heather Johnson, “and the things we collect reflect our values, our culture and our passions. We are grateful to our members for sharing these interests with us and the public.” The collections on display are as unique and diverse as the individuals who collect them. Some of the highlights include a collection of miniature airplanes hand-made by a local artist; old bottles discovered at various local locations by a metal detector enthusiast; a variety of mother-of-pearl objects; and collections of Oaxacan animals and Ming

Dynasty items gathered on one collector’s many travels. The exhibition is scheduled to run through the end of June. Kathy is the daughter of an artisan mother and scientist father. Her mother owns Colorful Visions Art Glass Studio in Bayport where mother and daughter collaborate in creating fine custom glass designs for homes and businesses. Their work can been seen locally at such places as the BayportBlue Point Library, Grey Horse Tavern, Brickhouse Brewery and Bayard Cutting Arboretum. The glasswork of Kathy Seff has been exhibited and sold throughout Long Island and in Manhattan. In 2010, she received the Strategic Opportunity Stipend from the New York Foundation for the Arts for her serigraphy on glass portrait series. Kathy has been a member of the Board of Directors for Women Sharing Art Inc. and the Architectural Review Board for the Village of Patchogue. She donates her graphic skills

“The Suffolk County Legislature is committed to helping keep the arts alive and giving recognition to our artists,” says Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick. Toward that end, Legislator Nowick created Art In The Alcove, which features a piece of sculpture in the alcove located off the lobby of the William Rogers Legislature Building at 725 Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge. It is open Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on weekends and holidays. On exhibit now until April 30, 2013 is Kaleidoscope Phone Booth created by Kathy Seff of Patchogue. She purchased an old phone booth off of Craigslist and transformed it into a kaleidoscope phone booth by covering it with pieces of mosaic glass and applying an epoxy finish to it. She also installed a non-working phone in the booth.

On January 11th, Helen Kunkel, a resident at Our Lady of Consolation Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center celebrated her 95th birthday. Helen was born in Green Point Brooklyn where she worked as a cashier and met her husband Al

Segretto. They moved to Long Island, settling in Huntington, where they raised three children. Helen’s husband passed away in 1977 after fortyone years of marriage. Helen remarried Paul Kunkel in 1989 and became a proud stepmother to three children. Paul Kunkel passed away in 1997 after eight years of marriage. Helen has been a resident at Our Lady of Consolation since January 2011. She stays active by crocheting and participating in recreational activities. To celebrate this special day, a birthday celebration

was held at Our Lady of Consolation with her family, staff and friends. When asked for advice on how she stays so positive and young, Helen replied, “I believe everything is God’s will; He will take care of it. I am most thankful for my children and two wonderful husbands who took great care of my family and me.” Helen is blessed today to share her life with her six children, thirteen grandchildren, twentyseven great-grandchildren and three great-greatgrand children and Our Lady of Consolation is blessed to share it with her.
