The New York Islanders are partnering with The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) for the second straight season with the goal of raising funds and awareness for the organization. The event will take place on Thursday, March 7th, when the team takes on the New York Rangers at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum at 7 p.m. For each ticket sold, $2 will go directly to the NCMEC. Islanders

“It is crucial that we do everything possible to make sure our children are safe,” Islanders Owner Charles Wang said. “The fans who came and supported The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children last season were incredible.

NCMEC mascot, “Clicky,” will join Islanders mascot Sparky the Dragon for the entire game. The two characters will help staff members collect donations and distribute safety information on the concourse. To generate added awareness, the center-ice video board will run numerous facts and public service announcements throughout the evening.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Giant sigh of relief. I did it. I delivered a 20 minute (well, more like 10-minute) keynote address in front of roughly 100 high school journalism students and former professors. And I survived.

What’s the big deal, you ask?

Given that my profession consists mainly of the written word, the spoken word has always presented a bit of a problem for me. It’s not so much a weak point as a giant source of anxiety. Give me something to read, and I’m probably going to race through it and a relatively low volume, barely glancing up. All words will be pronounced correctly, with proper inflection and expression, but it will be over before you know it – and there had better be a powerful microphone handy. Ask me to ad lib and simply speak off the top of my head in front of a group of people – be it 3 or 3,000 – and, well, let’s just say most people know not to even ask.

Granted, I have gotten much better at this. Back in high school, I used to dread the words “Oral

Presentation” on any syllabus, and would work myself up into a frenzy of sorts in the days and hours leading up to said presentation. Usually, it came off fairly well; but there were definitely a handful of occasions when my ill-advised attempts to toss the notecards and “wing it” went awry. Suddenly, I would lose all track of what I was saying, where I was going with my “point” (more like tangent) and how on earth to get back on track. Of course, seeing dozens of your fellow classmates staring blankly back at you never helped the situation either.

Being a Journalism major in college, I’m sure you can all imagine how thrilled I was to learn that public speaking would be a large part of the curriculum.

There was even an entire Oral Communication course I was required to take…what luck! All joking aside, I did learn to slow it down a bit, enunciate, project, make eye contact (well, occasionally anyway) and – dare I say it – even to ad lib a bit from time to time. Not too much. Just enough.

When I was first asked to deliver the keynote for the LIU Post Media Arts Best Of High School Journalism Awards, all those nerves came flooding back. Memories of my valedictory address in high school, complete with my Guidance Counselor asking, “Um, Jamie? Do you need gum or a mint or something? You look like you’re going to be sick…” just prior to my getting ready to go on stage seemed fresh.

But that was almost thirteen years ago. A lot has changed. People grow.

They overcome their fears. Those once-impossible tasks seem suddenly attainable. In fact, that was the overall reaction of the high school students to my keynote address – Wow, we can do this too. She was just like us, and look what she’s achieved… The dream can become a reality.

That, I think, was the greatest compliment anyone could hope to receive. If, by getting over my fear of public speaking and being able to convey my message, I was able to influence even one high school student to pursue his/her dream of becoming a journalist… well, that’s the biggest reward of all.

DeMarco and members of the Sheriff’s Youth Reentry Task Force conducted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new home designated for homeless youth who will transition from a special rehabilitative program at the Riverhead

Correctional Facility.

Youth placed in the home will be engaged in a new initiative at Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch called The Right Path.

Sixth- and seventh-grade students of Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District participated in the second annual Literacy Committee Read-a-Thon.

Students pledged to read a certain number of pages or for a certain amount of time between 8:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., and gathered monetary donations based on their anticipated amount of reading.

Students spent the day in the school auditorium donning pajamas and

equipped with their independent novel, Nook or Kindle. Lounging with pillows and blankets, in sleeping bags and on couches brought into the auditorium from the school library, students silently attempted to meet their reading goals.

Oldfield Assistant Principal Wayne Cronk described the event, sponsored by the Literacy Committee, as “a way to promote literacy and encourage the practice of independent reading.”

During breaks, participants enjoyed book talks with committee members and library personnel, as well as entertaining activities such as “Literacy Jeopardy.” The money raised from the read-a-thon will be used to supplement classroom libraries.

“This was a fun way to get us excited about reading,” commented sixth-grader Sophia Hoss. “It’s nice to see what your friends are reading and get ideas for new books!”

On Saturday, March 16th, volunteers from Freeport’s Operation SPLASH will board boats and head out on our South Shore bays, to battle the debris and destruction that Super Storm Sandy left behind. A SPLASH armada of a dozen boats will ferry volunteers to remote islands as they donate their morning to help clean up the local bays. With the enormous amount of debris this year, many more volunteers and monetary donations are needed.

Last year, in three hours, a record 350 volunteers filled a 42 foot long barge six feet deep with shoreline trash. Volunteer Captain Joseph Pignataro reported that his crew hauled back a bathtub, half a boat, a broken jet ski, a lot of lumber, tires and at least

50 bags of trash. This year the amount to be picked up is even more staggering.

Since Sandy, Operation SPLASH boats have seen the devastation first hand, and have already started the clean-up process, removing large lumber, pilings, propane tanks, damaged docks and dock Styrofoam - all from just the local waterways. The amount of debris resting on our bay islands for this year’s clean-up, OpSPLASH23, will be more of a challenge, and greater assistance is welcome.

“The bad news is that Super Storm Sandy has undone most of the great work our volunteers have done over the last 22 years,” said Rob Weltner, President of Operation SPLASH. He continued, “The good news is, we Long Islanders love our bays and

beaches and will rise to the challenge before us, and make them pristine again.”

To volunteer, please gather at the old Freeport Museum, 202 Woodcleft Avenue in Freeport at 9 a.m. on March 16th (rain date March 17th).

Volunteers should dress for the weather of the day. Waterproof boots and work gloves are strongly suggested.

For safety reasons, no sneakers are allowed. Children must be at least 12 years old to participate and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Fresh from a hardfought win over Maine on Saturday, the Stony Brook University women’s basketball team put victories on the basketball court into perspective on Monday with a visit to hospitalized children at Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital.

Team members and coaches distributed “6th man” T-shirts and team posters to children, along with stuffed animals and toys. Brayden Bello, age 6, of Commack, son of Kerry and Jaime Bellow of Commack and a first grader at Indian Hollow Elementary School, received a Lego toy and T-shirt as the team gathered around his hospital bed. His mother spoke on behalf of the shy youngster, saying, “It’s nice that they do that.”

The players got as much out of the interaction, if not more, than the children did.

“I really enjoyed it,” said Natalie Myers, a sophomore point guard from Portland, Ore., who is majoring in business administration. “It’s nice to see the sparkle in their eyes. They have such a really great attitude too.”

“I like it a lot,” added Teasha Harris, a junior point guard from Bloomington, Il., who is majoring in sociology.

“You see what the kids

like to do in their free time. It’s really exciting.

It makes you realize what you take for granted, like the littlest things.”

The team also stopped at the Stony Brook University Cancer Center, where they visited with pediatric outpatients, including Justine Ellis, 17, daughter of Dave and Leslie Ellis of Manorville.

A senior at EastportSouth Manor High School, Justine plays basketball, volleyball, soccer and softball recreationally and is applying to Stony Brook University for next fall.

“It was fun,” she said of the opportunity to meet the members of the Stony Brook team.

Meghann Bohle of Port Jefferson, mother of 2-year-old Landon Bohle, said her son was nonplussed when he heard the team was coming to visit him at the Cancer Center, where he also is an outpatient. But he soon warmed up to the players while his mom watched nearby.

Meghann played volleyball and basketball in high school, she said, while his dad, Greg Bohle, played lacrosse and soccer. “We’re big basketball fans,” Meghann said.

“Hopefully, he (Landon) has got sports in his future.”

“We appreciated the chance to give back to

the community,” said Beth O’Boyle, Head coach of the Stony Brook women’s basketball team, after the visit. “The Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital does an exceptional job caring for its patients and we enjoyed our time visiting with the children, their families and the dedicated staff at the hospital.”

The students of James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District received a special visit from David Adler, author of approximately 232 published books. Some of Mr. Adler’s more familiar titles include those in the Cam Jansen and Bones mystery series, as well as a collection of picture book biographies.

The accomplished

author discussed some of the processes involved in writing and publishing a book and encouraged students to use their own experiences to spur writing ideas. “One of the reasons I love to write is because I know the people I’m writing about,” Mr. Adler explained to students.

“Everyone has their own stories to write, and no one can write the story you write, so have fun with it.”

Students were then given the opportunity to ask Mr. Adler questions. The audience members enjoyed the time they had to share with the creative author.

“All of his stories are based on people he already knows,” remarked fourthgrader Dylan PobleteInfante. “That’s really good to know because I know a lot of people that I can write about, too. Maybe I will be a writer!”

Geo Bee Students of Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District recently took part in the first round of the 25th Annual National Geographic Bee, sponsored this year by Google.

Round one was a schoollevel competition in which students answered geographical questions orally.

Eighth-grader Connor Madden took first place in the school bee and now has an opportunity to win a $25,000 college scholarship as he moves on in the competition.

Winners of the oral portion of the competition

will participate in the second round, a written exam, administered in their home schools.

Students who score in the top 100 of the written exam are eligible to compete at the state-level bee on April 5.

National finals, moderated by Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek, will be held on May 22nd, and will air on television.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent.

Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease.

Scouting For Food Scouts of all ages will be going door to door in the coming weeks to ask for food. Their goal will be to collect more than 85,000 pounds of food donations that will be distributed to food pantries, soup kitchens, and charitable organizations that feed the hungry across Long Island.

The Boy Scouts of America has a history of service to the community.

Every Scout makes it a part of his daily life to do a good turn. This year, Long Island’s pantries and

soup kitchens have been hard hit by the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy.

Immediately following Super Storm Sandy, the Boy Scouts of America in Suffolk County mobilized to collect food, blankets, clothing and cleaning supplies to be delivered to affected residents.

Every March, the Boy Scouts of America in Suffolk County holds a food drive to help the pantries restock after the hard winter months and passing holidays. This

March 23rd, Scouts across Long Island will collect and distribute food donations.

The prestigious ceremony, held at the Suffolk County Police Academy, honored all the officers and awarded one sheriff with the Top Cop award after making 108 arrests this year.

The Sensational Signers, a group of 20 individuals with disabilities from the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Suffolk (UCP) Adult Day Services program and Mill Neck Services, recently performed at the annual Martin Luther King Celebration held at the Long Island Developmental Disabilities Regional Office in Brentwood.

The group sang three songs, interpreted songs into sign language, and danced into the hearts of the audience.

Over 100 people attended the performance and the audience response was enthusiastic. There were two standing ovations and many cheers.

Under the direction of Rachel Breslin, Day Treatment Activities Supervisor at UCP, the group has been practicing together each week for over a year. To date, they have mastered 50 adult songs and 25 children’s songs.

“The group’s first performance to the community was last year’s MLK event,” said Breslin.

“Since then, they have become true entertainers with over 25 performances behind them and are booked for six performances in the community in the coming months.”

In addition to performing, the group explores proper breathing techniques, the benefits

of movement, and importance of being healthy.

They discuss self advocacy and the significance of advocating for themselves and other individuals with disabilities. According to Breslin, “The rehearsals have become quite a social event. The group learns new tunes and practices mastered songs. They also create their own sets and in some cases design their own costumes. Each person gets to see how they can contribute to the success of the group.

Ultimately, all of these activities help to build self esteem, foster a sense of community, and make for one terrific show!”

The Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps (SBVAC), a 90-member all-volunteer studentled emergency response unit, was honored as the Collegiate EMS Organization of the Year for 2012-2013 at the 20th Annual National Collegiate EMS Foundation (NCEMSF) conference held in Washington, DC, from February 22nd-24th, 2013.

SBVAC was selected from more than 100 collegiate EMS organizations across the nation.

Founded in 1970 by a small group of university students, SBVAC is a New York State-certified ambulance corps that has grown into a collegiate EMS agency that provides one of the highest standards of emergency response care in the state. SBVAC primarily serves the Stony Brook University campus the and is regularly utilized as

an EMS resource for the surrounding communities.

SBVAC services an average daily population in excess of 30,000 people, including more than 8,000 campus residents. They responded to nearly 1,300 calls last year.

County Executive Bellone and the Suffolk County Senior Citizen Advisory Board is pleased to announce that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging is now accepting nominations for the Senior Citizen of the Year Award.

This award recognizes a senior citizen who has significantly contributed to other seniors in a meaningful and important way, either as an advocate, role model, leader, or

volunteer. This impact can be felt either countywide, or in one of the local communities.

Nominations should be made on the attached form and must include the nominee’s name, address, and phone number, along with why you are nominating this person for this award.

Candidates must be 60 years of age or older and a resident of Suffolk County.

Legislator Tom Muratore recently attended the Suffolk County Drug Treatment Court’s Graduation Ceremony, held at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip.

Drug Treatment Court is a specialized part of the Suffolk County District and County Criminal Courts. It is offered to those who have a drug and/or alcohol addiction, and have been arrested on

misdemeanor or felony charges. The program’s goal is to bring effective intervention to individuals caught within the cycle of substance abuse and crime.

One of the requirements includes appearing before the Presiding Judge while following their individual treatment plan.

“I was happy to attend the Drug Court Graduation again,” stated Legislator Muratore. “With

drug addiction and drugrelated crimes at an alltime high, it is important to encourage and support the individuals who have persevered through this difficult program to turn their lives around.”

Spring Respite Schedule Set Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck announced that it is once again offering its spring weekend respite program, transforming the 60-plusyear-old camp into a year-round destination for children and young adults with disabilities.

Children and young adults up to the age of 21 arrive on Friday evening and leave on Sunday afternoon. There is a new theme each weekend.

Campers can participate in various activities, including baking, arts and crafts, games, and watching movies.

The weekends available are as follows: March

22nd-24th; April 19th21st; and May 3rd-5th.

The cost of each weekend (Friday to Sunday) is $350. The camp requires a $50 deposit per session which is non-refundable unless registration is canceled 30 days prior to the session.

“We are excited to bring back this wonderful program,” said Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. “This gives children and young adults the opportunity to be themselves, and the parents a chance to relax while their sons and daughters are being taken care of.”

Check-in for campers is by 8 p.m. on Friday and check-out is by 3 p.m. on Sunday. Because the resources are packed away until the summer, campers are required to bring their own sheets, blankets, pillows, towels, and toiletries.

Up to 20 campers will be admitted for each weekend. During those weekends, the camp will be staffed by five counselors and the camp nurse.
