Head out to the open roads, and it’s a whole new ballgame.

There are those who feel the need to merge at speeds approaching 70 miles per hour, all the while paying no attention to the speed you may be approaching at. Make way, because they’re coming regardless!

Then there are the people who seem to have an aversion to using that shoulder portion leading up to an exit ramp, instead preferring to come to a screeching halt right in their lane – your lane – as they contemplate whether this is really where they need to get off.

Oh, but let’s not forget my favorite – those who make a habit of driving at night with their brights on, blinding all those in front of them with

their hi-beam glow. Are you afraid of the dark? Is that the issue? Are the dozens of streetlights and headlights from your fellow motorists simply not enough to guide the way?

Perhaps nighttime driving is not for you.

We all do stupid things from time to time. Whether from distraction or a momentary lapse in judgement, these things happen. But when you are operating a piece of machinery capable of taking another human life, perhaps we should do our best to keep these idiotic idiosyncrasies to a minimum.

Pay attention, put the phone away, save your makeup application, shaving and hairstyling for another time… oh, and when the sign says “Lane Ends,” believe it.

As a result of my daily commute having been recently increased from 15 minutes to anywhere from 45 minutes (on a good day) to… oh, let’s say an hour plus on a normal morning during rush hour, I have had the overwhelming privilege to observe the shenanigans of one of our favorites: the fellow motorist.

And here I thought residential, stop-and-go driving was bad.

To be clear, there is a certain nuance to the pleasure of trailing behind a line of school buses, to the point that you manage to hit every single stop sign and traffic light within a five-mile stretch. And let’s not forget the classic inching forward while reading street signs – oh wait, I wanted to turn three blocks back…let’s just throw the car in reverse, why don’t we.

Concert To Be Simulcast In an effort to share the extraordinary 12-12-12 Concert for Sandy Relief with many of those most impacted by this storm, Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, The Madison Square Garden Company and The Weinstein Company today announced that this unprecedented event will be simulcast live in select movie theaters in hurricane-affected areas throughout the tri-state region, including in five Clearview Cinemas and a National Amusements Multiplex in Nassau County and the National Amusements Island 16 Cinema de Lux in Suffolk County. This presentation will be FREE of charge to all attendees and complimentary refreshments will be

provided.

Clearview Cinemas in Babylon, Baldwin, Franklin Square, Great Neck and Port Washington, along with the National Amusements Multiplex in Farmingdale and National Amusements Island 16 Cinema de Lux in Holtsville will participate.

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, hosted its Annual Stars Gala & Casino Night on Friday, November 16th at the Woodbury Country Club.

DDI not only raised funds for the children and adults it serves, but for its employees as well. In light of recent events with Hurricane Sandy, DDI established a special relief fund to benefit any employee who lost their home or are facing extreme economic hardship due to storm.

“DDI is very grateful to our Foundation Board of Directors, corporations, parents, teachers, staff, friends and volunteers who helped make this event a special and memorable evening,” stated John Lessard, DDI Executive Director. I am

especially grateful that a portion of the proceeds from this event will be designated to the DDI Employee Disaster Relief Fund, which has been established to help a number of our staff members who faced catastrophic losses due to Hurricane Sandy. Their homes were significantly damaged or destroyed, their cars were ruined, and their lives were turned upside down. Yet, despite the adversity, each and every one of our staff members collectively insured that all of the children and adults with disabilities entrusted to our care were kept safe and out of harm's way. We are very grateful for their dedication and hope to be able to offer any assistance that we can.”

The annual Gala featured two special award presentations. The 2012 Stars Advocacy Award was

presented to Julian Fisher of Gallagher Benefit Services. Over the past decade, Julian, along with his wife, June, has worked tirelessly to raise funds in support of the many programs and services DDI provides to children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. DDI was also pleased to honor students who have been active participants in the school age vocational services in the Children’s Day Program. For three or more years, these students have participated in community based volunteer activities, which are meant to help the students prepare for future employment opportunities, increased socialization experiences, and the ability to lead productive and satisfying lives in adulthood.

DDI was proud to honor these students, as well as

the Transition/Vocational Coordinator, Doris Frisenda, who has worked tirelessly for over 17 years to provide this opportunity for the students enrolled in DDI’s Children’s Day Program.

They’re at it again.

Those good folks from the Stimson Middle School community in South Huntington are tireless in their efforts to come up with ways to strengthen their community while doing good for others.

This time, as part of Assistant Principal Sansotta’s highly successful Penny Wars, an effort was made to collect needed everyday items to be shipped overseas to our troops in Afghanistan.

Throughout the Penny Wars contest, items like socks, prepaid phone cards, soup, lip-gloss, batteries, sunglasses, playing cards, snacks, CDs, gum, mints, candy, books, magazines, and eye drops were collected and boxed for the troops. The effort has been going on separately for several years now at Stimson, and this year it was expertly coordinated through Mr. Sansotta’s Penny Wars by special education teacher Mr. Jim O’Brien and PTA representative Ms. Patti

Nardelli. “This turned out to be a wonderful effort by everyone here at Stimson,” said Mr. O’Brien. “Everyone helped out, and everyone got involved. The Stimson community came through once again, demonstrating all the good qualities of citizenship.”

Mr. John Gilhen, Walt Whitman class of 1972 and a Stimson staff member, was on hand to represent the U.S. Military as he helped load the many boxes for delivery.

Mr. Gilhen is a member of the American Legion and the Vietnam Veterans of America. He was in the U.S. Air Force as a member of a MediVac Unit responsible for rescuing troops and personnel when Saigon fell to the Communists in the mid 1970s.

“From my perspective, just knowing that people from back home are thinking about you while you’re deployed is so very important,” said Mr. Gilhen. “Just the fact that someone shows they

care, whether it’s by standing at an airport and shaking your hand and saying thanks, or like what we did here at Stimson, means so much to our service men and women.”

Ms. Patti Nardelli and her family have been involved with sending our troops needed gifts for years. “My daughter Jennifer works for Barclays, a financial services provider that has an ongoing relationship with two Marine Platoons currently deployed in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan. They have agreed to ship all of the Stimson boxes free of charge,” said Ms. Nardelli.

“Barclays has an Adopt a Platoon program, and they have been gracious enough to let us include our donations in their shipments to the troops. It has worked out really well.”

Congratulations to the Stimson community for coming through once again to help others and make us all proud.

Hospital Ball Held

On Saturday, November 10th, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center held its 2012 Hospital Ball at the East Wind Inn and Spa in Wading River. This annual event is the pinnacle of our fund raising efforts, and raised almost $600,000 for the Medical Center.

This year we had the distinct honor of recognizing Dr. Edward J. Kormylo with the Dr. Jacob Dranitzke Award.

This award is presented annually to an individual who demonstrates involvement, support, and commitment to his profession, the Medical

Center, and the community. Dr. Kormylo has been a dedicated and innovative member of our Medical Center for almost 20 years, and is currently the Medical Co-Director of the Hospital’s Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine. The Corporate Service Award was presented to Prudential Retirement, the administrator of our retirement fund.

Prudential is dedicated to their role as a caring corporate citizen, and to the trust placed in them by the Medical Center.

In recognition of the profound effect the recent storms had on our

employees, Brookhaven also announced the establishment of an Employee Relief Fund to assist those in need now and in the future. The appeal raised almost $10,000 that evening and our efforts to raise funds for this purpose will continue.

All funds raised will help fund the construction of new cardiology and operating suites and the programs and services associated with them.

Brookhaven Memorial Hospital has received a Challenge Grant that will match the net proceeds of this event.

Presented With Proclamation

The Long Island Ducks today were presented with a proclamation from the Suffolk County Legislature, including Suffolk County Legislator Rick Montano, in recognition of winning the 2012 Atlantic League championship.

The proclamation was presented to founder/CEO Frank Boulton, coowner/coach Buddy Harrelson and president/general manager Michael Pfaff.

“It is my privilege this year to recognize and

award a proclamation to the Long Island Ducks and their organization,” said Legislator Montano. “It’s really something that we can be very proud of.

Congratulations to all of you!”

The Ducks were honored after winning their second title in franchise history by defeating the Lancaster Barnstormers three games to two in this year’s Atlantic League Championship Series. The series was won at Bethpage Ballpark on

Sunday, October 7th when Dan Lyons laid down a walk-off bunt single in the bottom of the ninth inning. Lyons was later named the Most Valuable Player of the Championship Series.

Catholic Health Services (CHS), in collaboration with Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Nassau County Health Commissioner Lawrence Eisenstein, MD, provided free tetanus and flu vaccines recently to emergency responders as well as to residents in hurricane ravaged Island Park.

Catholic Health Services free community outreach program, Healthy Sundays, supported by nursing staff from member hospitals St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center, Mercy Medical Center and Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, administered the injections to ensure the safety and protection of individuals who continue to work in areas hardest hit by the storm. Dozens of CHS employees, many of whom were impacted by the hurricane themselves, volunteered their time and skill to provide the tetanus and flu vaccines.

“In the wake of the devastation following Hurricane Sandy, we remained focused on ensuring the health and wellness of individuals in the communities impacted by this storm,” said Joel Yohai, MD, Executive Vice President, Medical Affairs, Chief Medical Officer, CHS. “Catholic Health Services couldn’t be more proud to collaborate with County Executive Mangano and Dr. Eisenstein in delivering critically important tetanus immunizations to Island Park emergency responders. As they continue to work to restore these neighborhoods, they can do so knowing they are protected against this serious bacterial infection.”

“Protecting the health and safety of our emergency responders is a priority,” said County Executive Mangano.

“This partnership with Catholic Health Services assured that our emergency responders who are performing cleanup work as result of super storm Sandy receive the necessary protection.”

“This year’s election of eight distinguished scholars, many of whom are internationally recognized, into the ranks of AAAS Fellows is evidence of our faculty’s scholarship and vast contributions to their respective fields,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L.

Stanley Jr., MD. “Their meritorious work not only serves the University, but it serves society by pushing the frontiers of scientific advancement, research and discovery in engineering and the sciences.”

The tradition of AAAS Fellows began in 1874.

Currently, members can be considered for the rank of Fellow if nominated by the steering groups of the Association’s 24 sections,

or by any three Fellows who are current AAAS members (so long as two of the three sponsors are not affiliated with the nominee's institution), or by the AAAS chief executive officer. Each steering group then reviews the nominations of individuals within its respective section and a final list is forwarded to the AAAS Council, which votes on the aggregate list.

Dodging For A Cause

Students of Elwood Middle School united in support of a good cause and had a great time doing it! Over 300 students took part in the school’s popular “Dodge Cancer” fundraising event benefiting members of the Elwood community who

are directly affected by the disease.

Every participant contributed a $10 donation, allowing them and their teammates to take to the courts for several rounds of dodgeball.

Penny Wars A Success

displaying the numbers 1 through 5, was spun each afternoon in a live broadcast. The number that came up became the point multiplier for the day. Each team’s penny points and bonus points for the day would be multiplied by that number. The goal was to encourage teams to put their pennies into play every day. With the new rules and renewed interest, Stimson collected over $4,000 in 2010 and made a huge food donation to St. Hugh’s.

Last year we made an additional change to the game. Wednesday was identified as Double Bonus Wednesday. Items collected on Wednesday would be used to make Thanksgiving Baskets to be distributed to families in the South Huntington community. These items were worth 200 points each.

We raise over $3,500 and collected almost 2,000 food items.

Once again the Penny Wars staff went back to the drawing board for 2012 and made another two changes. The first change is Bonus Box Tops points.

We all know how reluctant middle school students are to turn in those Box Tops. Well this year they were able to earn 10 Penny Wars Points for their homerooms by bringing in those Box Tops. As a bonus, full sheets of 25 Box Tops were given 500 points.

Our second change has really revolutionized the game.

For the first time since Penny Wars began, a change was made to the

negative point menu. This year students were asked to bring in supplies that would be shipped to the men and women serving overseas in our armed forces.

These items counted as negative 100 points each. Box Tops and Military Items were subject to the Point Multiplier Wheel.

Needless to say the game got very interesting.

When the counting was completed, homeroom 311, Ms. Schmitt’s homeroom, was declared the 2012 Penny Wars Champion.

This year, after running all the change through the Penny Arcade at TD Bank, our official total raised was $4,761.65. A substantial portion of that money will be donated to a charity chosen by the students in homeroom 311.

The remainder will stay at Stimson and will be used to support programs that benefit all of our students.

We collected about 2,200 food items. Some of that will be used for Thanksgiving Baskets.

The rest was already brought to the food pantry at St. Hugh’s to help those suffering the effects of Hurricane Sandy. We also collected almost 900 items that will be shipped to men and women serving overseas in the armed forces. Finally, the Box Tops flowed into Stimson like never before. The generosity shown by Stimson students and their families has been truly amazing.

Penny Wars 2012 was a huge success and, believe it or not, students are looking forward to 2013.

Soon after, Vater and his good friend Jack Paladino, owner of Christophers, strung a pair of speakers across both sides of the street to improve the sound.

The music now has a richer, cleaner sound thanks to the updated equipment. The entire system and wiring has been upgraded with new speakers, amplifiers and a mixing board replacing the 12-year-old system.

There are plans to add more zones throughout the Village as funding becomes available.

District extends an enthusiastic welcome to

Lynn Burke as she accepts her role as Harley Avenue Primary School’s interim principal.

Mrs. Burke joins Harley by way of the Port Jefferson School District, where she held the position of elementary school principal.

Following her retirement in 2009, she served as interim principal in the Islip School District. With 18 years of teaching experience and 17 years of administrative experience, Mrs. Burke is equipped with both the knowledge and experience needed for a successful year in the

Elwood Union Free School District.

“My goal is to provide continuity for the children and staff in moving ahead with all building initiatives,” stated Mrs. Burke. “I look forward to working closely with the district office and Harley staff, children and parents for the remainder of this year. I understand the importance of creating bonds within the school community and working together for the benefit of the children.”

The Young Professionals Chamber of Commerce (YPCC), a program of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, hosted its 10th Annual Business Leadership Competition at Farmingdale State College on Wednesday, November 28th.

This year, more than 275 high school students from 13 local high schools, including Commack, Farmingdale, Half Hollow Hills East, Half Hollow Hills West, Harborfields, Hauppauge, Huntington, North Shore, Northport, Oyster Bay, St. Dominic’s, Walt Whitman, and Wilson Technological Center participated. Huntington Village is humming with shoppers busy gathering gifts for everyone on their holiday lists. The streets are singing, too, with holiday music piped in over speakers strung all along New York Avenue, Main Street and Wall Street, getting everyone into the spirit of the season.

Toy Drive To Be Held

The Young CPAs Committee of the NYSSCPA – Suffolk Chapter is participating in its 18th Annual Holiday Toy Drive to benefit the U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots Program. We once again expect to be the single largest pickup in all of Suffolk County!

All members of the media are invited to join us at 3 p.m. on Friday, December 14th for the ceremonial pick up of over 3,000 toys by the USMC at the offices of Sheehan & Company, 165 Orinoco Drive, Brightwaters, New York. It truly is amazing

to witness the enormity of our efforts and the appreciation expressed by the Marines.

The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants’ Young CPAs Committee was formed over 18 years ago to encourage younger members of the Society to participate in events such as the Toys for Tots Program. The Committee is also involved in various networking and professional development activities, which provide a forum for establishing professional relationships and creating leadership

skills. Cynthia Finn Barry has organized the Suffolk Chapter’s Toys for Tots Program since its inception 18 years ago working closely with the U.S. Marine Corps and members of the Suffolk Chapter.

The event has grown tremendously over the years and this year over 100 firms and local businesses are participating as drop-off locations including all branches of First National Bank of Long Island and local branches of Valley National Bank.

Post-Addiction Aid Hurricane Sandy inflicted tremendous damage to those in the metropolitan area. In the hardest hit areas, there has been tragic loss of life, leaving many grasping for answers.

For those in recovery or suffering from addiction, such trauma can be a trigger for renewed or increased use of alcohol or drugs to deal with fear, anxiety, sadness and/or anger.

“Our societal norms and the media messages often support the notion that alcohol or other mood altering substances are just the thing to soothe those negative feelings,” said Kathleen Riddle, president of Outreach, the noted drug and alcohol treatment program. “We see it quite differently.

With the holidays approaching, now is a good time to take proactive measures.”

“Increased use or alcohol or drugs almost always makes the situation worse, and does nothing to address the underlying problems.

Worse, those under the influence have little ability to deal with the events around them, making it more difficult to balance daily needs like working and caring for children while also attempting to find shelter, get the heat

back or apply for assistance,” said Riddle.

Substance abuse professionals advise the following: · If you are in recovery, use your support system.

Seek out supportive friends or find a professional counselor with whom you can talk out your experience as soon as possible. · Go over the experience in detail. Discuss what you felt while the events were happening. · Make a plan to avoid situations in which alcohol or drugs will be present or offered.

Attending self help meetings, church services and social/leisure activities are all good alternatives. · The parks and other recreational areas are open again after being closed immediately after the storm. Exercise (such as walking and jogging) is a great way to reduce stress and spend time in a healthy way.

Yoga, meditation and other relaxation activities can be extremely helpful in times of stress and trauma. · If you are already in a substance abuse program, you may not have had access to the program because of the storm. Most programs are back in operation and you should prioritize making

arrangements to see your counselor. Call and see how they might be able to assist you, especially if you have ongoing disruption or displacement in your life. · Seek professional help if your emotions and/or substance use become overwhelming.

Posttraumatic stress is normal after disasters and tragic events, such as Sandy.

There is no shame in seeking help in these circumstances. · Volunteer or contribute to the relief efforts.

Those who suffered loss in the storm may well find comfort in helping others. Many counselors in programs are able to give back in this way, even if they themselves suffered trauma in the storm.

For those fighting addiction during this postSandy recovery time, Outreach has offices in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island with programs for teenagers and adults, including some specialized programs for women and women with children.

As her contest entry, Casey described how she overcame adversity in her math class. She had struggled in math since 7th grade, but didn’t want to accept her grades and refused to continue her “C” average. With the help of her tutors, she increased her grades. Now that she is in 11th grade, she succeeded at taking

math a year above her grade level due to her rapid progression.

Bell Ringing Kickoff

Treasurer Carpenter was pleased to attend the Salvation Army Bell Ringing Kick-Off at Simon Mall at Smith Haven Mall, Lake Grove.

It is very gracious of the Simon Mall to allow the Salvation Army Bell Ringing Campaign at the Smith Haven Mall at Lake Grove.

The monies raised helps

to provide aid for the holiday season and throughout the year to support the needy. This includes holiday meals for the homeless and needy families and also helps serve many through a myriad of other services all year long, including disaster response services, which are so needed in our community this year.

“I commend Smith Haven Mall for their generosity to allow the Salvation Army to use their premises during the holiday season,” said Carpenter.

“This year, more than ever, the Salvation Army will be making a real difference in the lives of so many here in our communities.”
