Eagles Take Flight On January 6th, Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr., Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature had the rare privilege of participating in an Eagle Scout Court of Honor for not one, not two, not three or even four but five Eagle Scouts at one time.

This unusual event, which is usually held when one scout attains the highest rank of Eagle, occurs less than two times for every 100 boys who join scouting.

However, this past Sunday, five distinguished young men, Chris Ingram, Michael Lau, Steven

Salvatore, Orrie Wolfer and Ryan Mathie, joined the rank of Eagle Scout together, bringing five times the honor to Troop 565 of Smithtown and the Smithtown United Methodist Church, sponsor of the troop.

Bright Young Minds

On January 4th, Minority Leader, Legislator John M. Kennedy Jr. had the privileged of speaking with students from Smithtown West High School who were preparing for the We The People competition in Albany.

The students were formulating a Constitutional argument that will be presented in our States Capital at a later date. Legislator Kennedy was pleased to be able to speak with these bright young minds that make up Smithtown West High School and share with them the legalities of the Supreme Court Case;

Marbury v. Madison.

The Legislator worked in conjunction with Joseph Gatto, 12th grade government teacher at Smithtown West to present them with information that would help them reflect upon the argument they are preparing for their final round in Albany.

“I was happy to be able to speak with the students of Smithtown West about Marbury v.

Madison, and I was interested in hearing what they had to say about this historic Supreme Court Case. I was impressed with their thoughts and I can say without a doubt that the

12th District is home to some of the brightest young minds in this country,” said Legislator Kennedy after the event.

Education is vital to Legislator Kennedy and the 12th district and it was a great experience to be able to talk to local students about their view of government and historic supreme court cases such as Marbury v. Madison. “I wish the students the best of luck up in Albany and I hope they are successful in their argument and make us proud at home in the 12th district,” said Legislator Kennedy.

Influenza in New York State (NYS) has been widespread for the past two months and is significantly more prevalent at this time of year as compared to the past several years. To date, there have been more than 19,000 laboratory-confirmed cases reported since seasonal influenza testing began in October 2012, compared to 4,400 cases during all of the 2011-2012 influenza season. Currently, there have been 2,884 laboratory confirmed hospitalizations associated with influenza. There are 2 reported pediatric influenza-related deaths on LI. In light of the widespread influenza activity across NYS and most of the nation, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) continues to strongly advise all New Yorkers who have not already received their influenza vaccine to do so immediately.

• Stay away from people who are sick.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

• If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area.

• Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by

wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label).

Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of withholding vaccines?

A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable.

Get Vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2012-2013 season vaccine is available in your area.

If you do contract the flu, talk to your doctor about antivirals. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that can be used for prevention or treatment of flu viruses. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster.

Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them.

• Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose.

• Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself.

• Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death, especially in the very young or old, pregnant women or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

Q: Who should get the flu vaccine?

A: Beginning this year with the 2012-2013 influenza season, the CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine each year. The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each year.

Q: What types of vaccinations are available?

A: The two types of flu vaccines are: • The “flu shot”: an inactivated vaccine which contains killed virus that is given by injection. It is approved for use in people 6 months of age and older, including healthy people, people with chronic medical conditions and pregnant women.

• The nasal spray flu vaccine: a vaccine made with live, but weakened, flu virus that cannot cause the flu in a healthy person. This is approved for use in healthy people 2-49 years old (not pregnant).

Q: What are the Side Effects of the two vaccine types?

A: Different side effects can be associated with the flu shot and nasal vaccine.

The flu shot: You cannot get the flu from a flu shot. Some minor side effects that could occur are: soreness, redness, or swelling at the site of injection, low-grade fever, muscle aches. If they are going to occur at all, they begin soon after the vaccination and usually last 1 to 2 days. Almost all people who receive influenza vaccine have no problems from it.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is set to receive a $25,000 grant from the Long Island Community Foundation (LICF) to support the creation of a brand new Military Families in Training (M-FIT) Program designed to educate, support, and strengthen military families.

Addiction rates among active duty soldiers, returning veterans and the spouses of service men and women are several times higher than rates seen in the general population.

Flipping The Switch By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There comes a time when you just have to tune things out. That point when all the chaos surrounding you simply needs to be shut off and pushed aside. The moment when all the pointless discourse and frantic commotion dissolves into simple background noise.

Peace and quiet…and clarity.

We all strive for this. And often, we would not find it so difficult to achieve – if not for the distraction of others.

Ah, but to live a solitary life devoid of all nuisance…what kind of existence would that be? And so we must learn to tolerate, to adjust, to find that happy medium between blatant rudeness and healthy…

distance, shall we say.

This is not to say we should be uninvolved in life; but sometimes, that fine line between being involved and being overtaken by nonsense is far too important to overlook.

We should only become caught up in those things which are healthy and beneficial to us in the long run. Leave the rest behind.

The problem is that, while, philosophically, this theory makes perfect sense, putting it into practice is far easier said than done when faced with reality. Anyone who deals with people on a daily basis, whether complete strangers or those near and dear, can surely attest to this fact. Love them or hate them, we are destined to clash with others more often than

not. It’s simple human nature.

The trick is to save these so-called “battles” for the important issues. And while, in the heat of the moment, each and every issue may seem equally dire, rest assured, they are not. Take a step back, take a deep breath, and heed the following: “Frame every so-called disaster with these words: In five years, will this matter?”

In most cases, the answer will be a clear and unequivocal “no.” So move on. Let it go.

Forgive and forget. Don’t allow yourself to get hung up on the small stuff.

In five years’ time, it won’t matter. Focus on today – and finding that elusive peace within yourself.

Twenty talented music students from Music Simply Music, Long Island’s leading in-home music education program, paid a visit recently to the Momentum at South Bay for Rehabilitation & Nursing Home in East Islip to stage a cheerful musical performance for elderly residents and patients.

As part of its Share My Music community outreach program, Music Simply Music arranged for 20 of its students ranging in age from 8 to 40 to play specially-learned songs for residents from the 1930’s and 1940’s, including nostalgic piano pieces, acoustic guitar and vocals.

“Over 40 Momentum residents were treated to an afternoon of music, thanks to our talented,

community-minded musicians,” said Nick Ambrosino, Founder and Director, Music Simply Music. “I would like to thank Momentum for allowing us to share the gift of music with their residents. While extremely enjoyable for residents and patients, the event also provided students with an opportunity to give back to the community in a meaningful way and to continue to express themselves at their instrument.”

The event was a motivating experience for the students. It also brought hope and inspiration to the community at large.”

ADOPT-A-FAMILY - The Business and Accounting Club at the Ammerman Campus of Suffolk County Community College recently held a 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament as a fundraiser. More than 15 teams and 60 students competed to raise money to help two local families in need through the Adopt-a-Family program. The students augmented their monetary donation with additional gifs purchased on their own for the families.

On Thursday, January 10th, The Rotary Club of Smithtown-Sunrise was honored to have Jennifer LoGiudice, Assistant Vice President of External Affairs and Strategic Initiatives of St. Catherines Hospital as guest speaker.

Jennifer’s presentation to the Rotary was an 2012 overview of new happenings at the hospital.

Points she covered were: St. Catherine was the first Catholic Health Service’s member hospital to transition to the Electronic Medical Record, CHS Ehealth, in June of 2012.

St. Catherine renovated the Maternity Department to upgrade the birthing rooms and create private post partum rooms.

St. Catherine renovated all lobbies on campus.

St. Catherine added 94 parking spaces for convenience.

St. Catherine began a multi-specialty minimally invasive robotics surgery program offering bariatric, general surgery, gynecology, colon and

rectal, and urology procedures.

St. Catherine received an “A” Rating for superior quality in patient safety.

St. Catherine just received the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for diseasespecific certification in Stroke.

There will be more investing on campus during the 2013 year including additional robotic surgical equipment, renovations to the ICU/CCU and renovation of the ED to add a second triage window.

In addition there will be Community Outreach including the Saturday Wellness Lectures and the October Health Fair.

Jennifer LoGiudice has been with St. Catherines since 2010 and, with Catholic Health Services of Long Island since 1997.

She has a Masters of Business Administration with a Concentration in Healthcare Administration from Baker College in Michigan, and Bachelor of Arts: Interdisciplinary Sciences and Technology

from Stony Brook University.

Holiday In The Woods

It has been an annual tradition for Commack’s Boy Scout Troop 125 to host Holiday in the Woods, complete with turkeys and hams cooked in garbage cans and traditional Thanksgiving sides and pies cooked by boy scouts. Delayed once due to Hurricane Sandy, Cub Scouts from Packs 329, 403 and 125 joined in a weekend tradition held this year in mid-December at West Hills County Park in Huntington.

Saturday was full of activities designed to give Webelos (4th and 5th grade scouts) an idea of what Boy Scouting with Troop 125 is all about. Boy scouts planned and executed various activities including first aid, fire building, cooking (zeppoles!), knot tying, constructing a Monkey Bridge and sliding down a zipline.

The highlight of the

weekend is always the feast cooked by the scouts and leaders of the troop which included their famous garbage can turkeys and hams, stuffing, corn, baked potatoes, salad. It concluded with dessert consisting of various pies baked by the scouts in Dutch ovens. Scout Josh Isaac said, “The highlight of my day was doing skits for the parents and cub scouts and seeing them laugh. We do skits every year but this year we had a whole new arsenal of jokes to dish out to the audiences and they did not disappoint!”

Boy Scout Troop 125 meets every Tuesday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Commack United Methodist Church (486 Town Line Road, Commack) and is open to boys ages 11-17 residing in Commack, Dix Hills, East Northport, Kings Park, Smithtown and their surrounding communities.

Options for Community Living, Inc. is pleased to announce that we have been selected as an official partner of Payless GivesTM Shoes 4 Kids, an annual giving program from Payless ShoeSource.

Thanks to Payless, Options is distributing $1,000 in merchandise certificates to children served through the agency’s programs.

Each year, Options for Community Living serves more than 40 homeless families in Suffolk County through its emergency shelter program. With

the support of an Options case manager, families find stability and are assisted in their search for safe, affordable housing.

By helping families who struggle to provide their children with basic essentials on a daily basis, Options, in partnering with the Payless GivesTM Shoes 4 Kids program, hopes to relieve some of the stress parents feel particularly during the holidays and to bring joy to as many families as possible.

Options also operates a community residence

program for adults with mental illness and a case management and housing program for people living with HIV/ AIDS in both Nassau and Suffolk. Stony Brook University Cancer Center has initiated a free transportation service for cancer patients to and from their homes throughout Suffolk County in an effort to provide access to care for patients who need chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and have limited resources to get to the Cancer Center.

The Non-Emergency Transportation (NET) program began in November and operates Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Recommendations for the service come from Cancer Center social workers; already more than 25 transports have been made. To qualify for the service, patients complete an application signed by their medical provider.

Cancer Center, Vice Dean, Cancer Medicine, and the Joel Kenny Professor of Medicine, most patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy require frequent visits to the hospital.

“Transportation has been an obstacle for many of our patients who live in Suffolk County,” said Dr. Hannun. “Offering free transportation to and from the Cancer Center is one more way we can serve our patients and ease the burden of their treatment journey.”

The idea of the transportation service was initiated by Linda Bily, Cancer Patient Advocacy & Community Outreach Coordinator, and Darlene Kenny, LCSW, Social Worker at the Cancer Center. Debbie Wunderlich, a member of the Cancer Center’s

by We Transport in Nassau County. The vehicle was painted by volunteers from Splashes of Hope, a non-profit agency based in Huntington, NY. Penny’s North Country Car Care in St. James, NY, donated repair services. Through an online voting co-sponsored by Warex Terminals Corporation and CITGO Petroleum Corporation and its Fueling Good program, Stony Brook University Hospital employees helped win $5,000 in free gas for the vehicle.

“This is a unique hospital-based program,” Bily said.

“Obtaining and refurbishing the bus was a true community partnership in every sense of the word.”

BLUE JEANS FOR RED CROSS - Applebee’s Long Island restaurants were drenched in denim from December 3rd-9th to help raise money for the American Red Cross and its efforts to assist the victims of Hurricane Sandy. The weeklong Blue Jeans for Red Cross program encouraged workers to wear jeans to work each day for a $1 donation to the ARC. In total, Applebee’s staff contributed $4,300 to the cause.

Noted Lecturer The large meeting room at the Suffolk Cooperative Library System (SLS) was full with school librarians from across the county who had questions about teaching the new standards.

Guest speaker and author Dr. Marc Aronson, hosted by the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Library System (SLS), was there to discuss the implementation of the new Common Core State Standards. “The evolution of K-12 education is upon us,” he said, “and

school librarians are the foundation in creating a common core community.”

The new education standards in English/ language arts and mathematics, adopted by 45 states including New York, will prepare students for life after 12th grade.

These standards have taken Dr. Aronson down a path of guiding librarians to be, he said, “…in this new world that promotes culling and curating from every source to give young

people opportunities to be in the debate as new ideas come forward. How we change education, librarianship, print and digital books, apps, is important. We need to immerse young people not in receiving knowledge, but in the pursuit of knowledge,” he explained.

“Thinking is endorphins for the brain.”

His presentation was titled Common Core, Uncommon Challenge.

Bus Service Introduced

Orchestra Openings The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York is inviting high-schoolaged orchestral and vocal musicians to audition for the group’s July 2013 concert tour of Central Europe. The touring MYO Orchestra and Chorus will visit and perform through Germany, Austria and Switzerland. An optional, additional week of touring will be in France.

The ensembles have embarked on several international tours over the past years with

concert visits to Central and Eastern Europe, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, China, Spain, Italy, Greece and, last year, to Australia and New Zealand. John McNeur, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, said, “This has proven to be a lifechanging experience for so many young people.

Beyond the incredible experience of spreading goodwill through their music, the musicians have had so many opportunities

to interact with people of very different cultures.

The experiences lived by the young musicians have become the inspiration for countless college essays and, of course, unbelievable memories.”

Stalking Awareness Month January is National Stalking Awareness Month, and Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco wants to bring more awareness to this crime that affects approximately 6.6 million victims each year.

Stalking is a complex crime characterized by a course of conduct directed at a specific person that would cause that person fear. Stalking may take many forms, such as assaults, threats, vandalism, burglary, or animal abuse, as well as unwanted cards, calls, gifts, or visits. Stalkers will also use technology, such as computers, global

positioning system devices, or hidden cameras, to track a victim’s daily activities.

Sheriff DeMarco advises individuals who are victimized by stalking behavior to keep accurate records of their perpetrator’s actions and to seek help from law enforcement and the courts. “Always call 911 if you are in any immediate danger, and trust your instincts.

Begin to collect any emails, phone messages, notes and any other evidence when you feel uncomfortable in your interactions with another individual,” he said.

“Information collected

over the course of time can be very helpful to law enforcement and if you need to seek a court order of protection,” DeMarco added.

Victims of stalking and domestic violence often suffer from constant anxiety and fear about their safety. Sheriff DeMarco offers information about applying for an order of protection, and the Sheriff’s Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification program (SAVIN-NY) on his website at www.suffolksheriff.com.

Legislator Tom Cilmi recently honored Probation Officer Rachel Hernandez in recognition of her exemplary work resulting in the arrest of gang members, taking illegal weapons off the street and helping a young woman cope with her rape.

“Our Probation Officers are the unsung heroes of our public safety team in Suffolk County. Their jobs put them face to face with criminals on a daily basis and their work, in no small way, keeps our streets safe.

Not only did Probation Officer Hernandez do her

job, but her compassion and understanding gave a rape victim the courage to testify against her assailants. She is a shining example of a department filled with stars,” stated Legislator Cilmi.

Central America and this summer hosted an underprivileged child from Ecuador who needed surgery for a cleft palate.

The child and her mother stayed at O’Sullivan’s home for six months, during which time O’Sullivan cared for the child.

O’Sullivan is the second Mather Emergency Department nurse to receive the award in the three years it has been given. Liz Devine, RN, Mather’s Emergency Department Nursing Manager, was the first recipient of the award. The Suffolk County Emergency Nurses Association represents 12 hospitals in Suffolk County, with more than 300 members.

John T. Mather Memorial Hospital Nurse Kerry O’Sullivan has been awarded the Julie Cangro Award for 2012 by the Suffolk County Emergency Nurses Association. The award is given annually to an Emergency Department RN from a Suffolk County hospital who exhibits the criteria of leadership, integrity, nurturer, dedication, creativity and magnanimity.

O’Sullivan, RN, TNCC, ENPC, a Mather Hospital ED nurse for eight years, also received Mather’s 2012 RN Community Service Award.

“I’m honored to be given this award,” said O’Sullivan, a nurse preceptor who is mentoring the first Emergency Department nursing graduate who was accepted into Mather’s Internship Program.

She also is active with Blanca’s House, a nonprofit organization of volunteer healthcare professionals who donate their time to provide free, invaluable medical treatment to children and their families who would otherwise have no access to modern health care.
