I was recently asked to deliver the keynote address for a High School Journalism Awards Luncheon & Ceremony, to be held at my alma mater, the (formerly known as) C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. Wow. The keynote address. Only nine years removed from college myself, and here I am expected to speak intelligently for 20 minutes to a crowd of (hopefully) eager, bright-eyed high school students about the highs and lows of the Journalism industry, the track of my career, the “war stories” of dealing with 20-something editions of a weekly newspaper and each and every piece of editorial content contained within them… a rather

daunting task. Never the fan of public speaking, my first thought was, 20 minutes?! Of speaking in front of a crowd of complete strangers?! By myself?! ButthenItookadeepbreathand truly considered the prospect… Wow, what an honor to be asked. Imagine how many Journalism students have come and gone through that program over the years… some have probably gone on to achieve amazing success in the field; others may have decided to pursue another career path entirely – all making their own distinct marks. And then there was me, going from the staff of the Charles Street Times in high school, to the staff of the Pioneer in college, to the board of the Press Club of Long
Island…working my way from editorial assistant, to associate editor to managing editor here at South Bay – all while accumulating quite the pile of column clippings. Sure, many have gone on to greater things – and hopefully this is just the beginning of a similarly fruitful career for me – but the most important thing, I feel, is to remember where you started from and the process by which you ultimately achieved your dreams. It all begins with family, is supplemented by schooling and finally becomes cemented with “real world” work experience. All part of the package, all part of the path to success. Now…if only I could manage to expand that philosophy into a 20-minute keynote address!

The Metropolitan NY Porsche Club of America made a $11,000 donation to Angela’s House. The club made the donation before they started their Snowflake Rally on Sunday January 27th. About 40 drivers and navigators gathered at the Hauppauge Palace Diner on Sunday morning for the start of the 57th Snowflake Rally. This year’s 70mile, three-hour trip took drivers from Hauppauge to Southampton along
several local roads. “It’s an awesome drive and it’s an awesome challenge, said David Leonoff, 44, president of the Metro New York Porsche club. “Winning it is not easy. Angela’s House, this donation is very important because the money raised is used to purchase equipment, supplies and other resources for children with special health care needs that are medically fragile chronically ill or living with
a life threatening illness. Many times insurance will not cover these items and Angela’s House uses these funds to support children living at home with their parents Angela’s House is completing construction of their third home that cares for medically frail with 24 hour nursing care. This home will help to care for children that are ventilator dependent.

Ten professional organizers from Nassau and Suffolk counties recently donated their skills and services to the Women’s Fund of Long Island, an organization that provides social change grantmaking, job skills training, education and leadership development to women and girls. Members of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) group POLI, celebrated National Get Organized (GO) Month in January by organizing the Jericho executive office as well as disposing seven years of clutter. GO Month takes place each January to raise awareness of the benefits of hiring a professional organizer and getting organized. The goal of the event was to organize every office and provide easy-to-manage storage solutions so that staff can easily locate and work with files. Diana Soll, of Grand Solutions LLC said, “It’s amazing what can be accomplished when
people come together for a great cause. When a space is organized, it not only provides easy accessibility, it generates positive energy.” In two days, NAPO organizers reorganized: • All stationary and supply closets • The kitchen and conference room • The program and finance offices, • The director and executive director’s Office • All bookcases • The attic space In addition, NAPO organizers sorted through hundred of pounds of paper, old office equipment and furniture that had accumulated over the last seven years. Executive Director Stacey Scarpone said, “This has been an outstanding way for us to inspire and raise staff morale with limited resources. And the idea that 10 professional women would volunteer their time and resources to an organization dedicated to
serving women and girls is an amazing philanthropic model.” In addition to the hands-on organizing, Fung Shui Consultant, Maureen Calamia provided a free consultation which included suggestions of color, furniture arrangement, and other elements which will be considered in the final phase in the near future. Director of Operations Erica Hecht summarized it best, “The air and the energy here is different. It is inspiring!”

economic vision for the County and the importance of establishing and cultivating relationships with religious leaders. Bellone stated, “We are fortunate to live in a County that has a diverse population. I believe that it is this diversity that makes Suffolk County a desirable place to live and thrive. You as religious leaders are an important component of that diversity as you promote inclusiveness and tolerance for all.” Bellone also invited Suffolk County Deputy Police Commissioner, Risco Mention-Lewis
and Lt. Bob Donohue to address the leaders and apprise them of the work of the Suffolk County Police Department in implementing strategies to break the cycle of recidivism and engaging community leaders to work collaboratively with the police department and precincts. Bellone concluded the gathering with an opportunity for questions from the clergy and promised to keep the lines of communication open with Suffolk County’s religious leaders.
CELEBRATING ELVIS - On January 22nd, residents at St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center celebrated Elvis Presley’s birthday with a sock hop. Residents participated in team games focused on 1950’s trivia. The Therapeutic Recreational staff served root beer floats and dressed in bobby socks and pedal pushers for the occasion. Such is the case with Janice Tsang, a December 2012 graduate with a BS in Business Management, who conducted her internship as a financial reporting and analysis intern with Duke Energy Corporation, a Fortune 250 company based in Charlotte, North Carolina. As a result of this internship, Janice has been offered a job with a Big Four public accounting firm. For her achievements, she has also been recognized by the Stony Brook University Career Center and the Stony Brook Alumni Association as the winner of the Off-Campus Internship contest. The Off-Campus Internship Contest is a competition designed to acknowledge and identify students participating in career-related off-campus internships for conducting exceptional work and achieving measurable accomplishments. The top three winners receive a cash prize from the Alumni Association, $250 for first, $150 for second and $100 for third, respectively. “Internships are incredibly valuable to students,” said Sherry K. Sussman, MD, ‘ 91, ‘95, President of the Stony Brook Alumni Association. “And those students, who fully appreciate that value and offer their best efforts to the employer, reflect well on Stony Brook and deserve to be rewarded.” Tsang, from Kew Gardens Hills, NY, spent her Duke Energy internship preparing SEC reports and providing expenditure reports for the controller and chief financial officer. She recalled learning new tagging programs for SEC filings and the Oracle Hyperion Financial
Management program. “Being able to see the work I have done throughout the summer come into play was definitely an eyeopener for me,” she said. Sarah Kaufmann, Director of Consolidation at Duke Energy, described Janice as a “detail oriented, focused” worker who “asked good questions and had a positive attitude.” Her work ethic ensured the “Corporate Reporting team met the second quarter reporting deadline and improved the quality of the report filed; she has an energy and enthusiasm that is unmatched by her peers,” wrote Ms. Kaufmann. As a result of this internship, Janice has secured a full-time position with PricewaterhouseCoopers beginning in July 2013. “The Career Center honors exploration and boldness,” said Alfreda James, Assistant Director, Graduate Student and Post Doc Career Services at the Stony Brook University Career Center. “By taking themselves off-campus and out of the classroom, these students toss out routines, learn to adapt to new settings, and re-evaluate their concepts of professionalism. They have taken charge of projects and developed a sense of high-level personal accountability for positive outcomes.” Elaina Anderson, from Orchard Park, NY, a senior seeking a BE in Engineering Sciences with a Minor in Business Management took second place in the internship contest. She conducted her internship in the Radiation Detection and Nuclear Science group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, WA, where she was taught “the fundamentals of nuclear science and granted access to state-of-the-art radiation detectors.” Misha Mehta, from West Nyack, NY, a

Caring For Granite Countertops (NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what you clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid
abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive. There’s a way to stretch your dollars. • Mind your budget: JAWS Glass & Hard Surface Cleaner (www.jawscleans. com) cleans granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, glass and even your flat-screen TV. It’s also non-toxic and costs less than most other cleaners because each JAWS product is actually two bottles in one. (The cartridge refill is attached to the bottle.) There are also some other basic preventive measures you can take to protect your granite countertops: • Use coasters: Place a coaster under all glasses, particularly those
containing alcohol or citrus juices that can etch or dull the surface of many stone countertops. • Use trivets or mats: They’ll protect your granite countertop from hot dishes and help avoid scratches. Granite countertops can really add spark to a kitchen or bathroom. Proper care will keep them looking beautiful.

Explorer Post Honored
On Sunday, January 27th, Legislator John M. Kennedy Jr., Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature, honored the Suffolk County Police Department Fourth Precinct’s Explorer Post 410 at a breakfast celebrating the Explorers both current and past and the accomplishments they have achieved at the Watermill Inn. “The Explorers exemplify admiration, compassion and have always been an integral part of our community,” said Legislator Kennedy. The Suffolk County Explorers, Post 410, has been an active post since 1975 and is sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America Learning for Life program and is administered by the Suffolk County Police Department’s Fourth Precinct. It is goal oriented
for those individuals between the ages of 14 and 21 years of age whom would like to pursue law enforcement as a possible career choice. The breakfast was an opportunity to bring Explorer alumni together with the current troop of over 20 members. Explorer alumni from the NYPD, FDNY, EMT, correction officers, Suffolk County Police Department and various other law enforcement agencies attended the event to share their journeys from the time they were Explorers to their current positions. Although Exploring is a “learning for life” program it is also a public service program. programs. Explorers Post 410 meets every other Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Suffolk County Police Department’s Fourth Precinct located at 345 Old Willets Path, Hauppauge, New York. Suffolk County Deputy Inspector Armando Valencia and Officer Guy Gourlay who administers the Explorers, oversaw the event. On Wednesday January 23rd, Buddy Valastro, Owner, Carlo’s Bakery and star of TLC’s hit show Cake Boss opened the doors to his Jersey City commercial bakery to a young Good Shepherd Hospice patient who’s one wish was to meet Buddy and bake him a cake! Thanks to the tireless efforts of Good Shepherd Hospice Child Life Specialist Elizabeth Olsen, Stephanie Lopez, 17, originally from El Salvador but currently residing in Centereach, was able to present her cake to Buddy and many of his talented
staff and co-workers during a very special tour of the bakery. “Stephanie is such a special girl, said Valastro. “She’s so young, but already has had to fight harder than most people do in their entire lives.” Buddy spent an hour teaching Stephanie to shape and colorize the chocolate mold into the beautiful roses we all admire as decoration on cake tops. Stephanie, an avid baker, impressed the Cake Boss crew with her talents for baking and decorating. Valastro also said “It
makes me so happy to spend time with young people like Stephanie. I want to do everything I can to help these kids and if visiting the bakery, making a cake, having a cannoli will make their day, I am more than happy to do it.” Spending the afternoon with Buddy and his gracious staff was amazing for Stephanie and her family. When her aunt pointed out she hadn’t smiled while with Buddy, Stephanie said “I was so nervous and excited my lip was trembling!”

Souper Bowl Score
The 4th Annual “Souper Bowl” at North Ridge Primary School in Commack was a HUGE success! The children collected a total of 6,395 soup cans and packages, which was donated to Long Island Cares. The Long Island Cares Food Bank is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger action organizations, serving individuals and families in need. Lorraine Esposito, a physical education teacher at North Ridge, arranged
the cans into the shape of a giant sneaker, complete with laces, to the delight of the children. Each time the children came to gym, they were amazed to see how the soup “sculpture” was taking shape. “The children are very motivated to help others and feed the hungry. The success of the Long Island Cares program is due to the support they receive from generous community members like our North Ridge families.” Art teacher, Carolann Lally, added extra
motivation to the collection by initiating a special project with the students in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Andy Warhol’s 1962 famed work, 32 Campbell’s Soup Cans. The students created “Andy Warhol Soup Can People,” as seen in the photo. Congratulations to Lara Sherman’s class, the “Souper Bowl” champions (in photo). The class donated 1,188 cans of soup.
The Need To Develop A Retirement Plan (NAPSI)—Preparing for retirement can be a challenging process— and emerging trends are not helping matters. Fortunately, developing a retirement plan can help. That’s the word from experts who say changes in employee benefits, longer life spans, uncertainty with Social Security and Medicare and the rising cost of health care have made funding retirement
more difficult. With most of the responsibilities for financial aspects of retirement now falling squarely on the shoulders of individuals, the key, according to Insured Retirement Institute President and CEO Cathy Weatherford, is to have a comprehensive plan that addresses both retirement income and expensesincluding health care.
National Retirement Planning Week was created to remind consumers of the importance of having a plan for funding their retirement. For those needing help, a professional financial advisor can assist when creating a road map toward attaining financial security. To learn more, visit www. retireonyourterms.org.
Historic Progress The Smithtown Historical Society held its annual Membership Meeting and Potluck Dinner on Monday, January 28th. Outgoing President Brad Harris opened the meeting by thanking the board, staff, and membership for their hard work, enthusiastic service, and belief in the organization. He then oversaw the election of new Board Trustee Andy Wolke and the reelection of Tony Tanzi and Inge Sobel back to the board. Executive Director Kiernan Lannon thanked Brad Harris for his years of dedicated service and commitment, presenting Mr. Harris with the Hancock-Harms Award for outstanding volunteerism. Mr. Lannon continued the meeting by sharing a report on finances, buildings & grounds, program development, and current steps being taken to reach evolving goals. “All around, 2012 has proven to be one of our most successful years,” remarked Mr. Lannon. “We have worked hard at
rooting ourselves into the community this past year so we may continue to grow with it. We have built new relationships with likeminded organizations, such as the Smithtown Community Band and Friends of Caleb Smith Preserve, to collaborate on new programming opportunities for the community. The response has been very positive.” Mark Mancini of Mancini Architecture also presented an informative update on the society’s ongoing restoration projects, highlighting the work completed on the Frank Brush Barn, Roseneath Cottage, Ham Bunn Cottage, and Library. He also remarked on the extensive work currently in progress on the Judge John Lawrence Smith Homestead, Epenetus Smith Tavern, and Obadiah Smith House. Before concluding the meeting, Mr. Lannon welcomed incoming President Tony Tanzi to the podium. Mr. Tanzi congratulated and thanked Brad Harris
for his immeasurable leadership, noting the society’s impressive advancements under his latest presidential term in addition to the Town Historian’s past 38 years of hands-on involvement with the Smithtown Historical Society. Although he will no longer serve on the board, Mr. Harris has agreed to set up an office part-time at the headquarters to continue helping out whenever and however he can. A list of upcoming events and programs was distributed at the meeting. Highlights for February include a President’s Valentine Brunch scheduled for Sunday February 17th to be hosted by both Mr. Harris and Mr. Tanzi, and the opening of a new exhibit “Smithtown ABC’s” scheduled for Friday, February 22nd, 2013, and additional adult and children’s programming. For more information please call the Smithtown Historical Society at 631.265.6768.
Carry-On Made Easier (NAPSI)-Doing a little homework before you travel could save you time at the airport. For instance, visiting www.TSA.gov, the Transportation Security Administration’s Web site, can help you learn what
items can be packed in carry-on and which are best left in checked suitcases. You can also learn size requirements for toiletries that are allowed on planes and then find properly sized items in stores. As a final tip, remember
that all carry-on gels, liquids and aerosols need to be placed in a 1-quart, single zip-top, clear plastic bag. For more information and tips, visit www.shave. com.

different training sessions and are intended to be presented at the unit level). Although YPT is available on-line many Leaders prefer a live presentation to provide interaction and have questions answered. Matinecock District’s Boy Scout Training Chair Greg Aylmer (assisted by past District Training Chair Marc Nathanson) was the facilitator/training instructor for the Youth Protection Seminar at this session. While their troop’s youth members were participating in the annual Matinecock District’s annual Polar Bear Camporee and Scouting Skills Competitions camping weekend, ten volunteer Scouters of Boy Scout Troop 539 (Kings Park), Troop 200 (Elwood), and Scouting Commissioners attended the Youth Protection Training session at the district’s HQ area in the Baiting Hollow Scout Camp’s Dining Hall. Matinecock District’s Training Chair/Scouting Volunteers Greg Aylmer and Marc Nathanson
presented videos, discussion groups, and lists of various resource materials to these newly trained leaders. The Boy Scout Leaders who participated and were trained or had renewed their training in Youth Protection at the Polar Bear Camporee were: Troop 200 (Elwood)’s scout parents Peter Spalding, David Pincott, and Assistant Scoutmaster and past Scoutmaster Peter Thun; Troop 539 (Kings Park)’s Assistant Scoutmaster Larry McGlynn of Northport; Unit Commissioners Helen and Gary Fricke (of Deer Park), John Davis (of Kings Park), and Tom Rolston (of Commack); Assistant Council Commissioner Joe Bond (of Commack); and Council Training Chair Paul Schmich (of Hauppauge) For more information about Youth Protection Training and joining Boy Scouts or Cub Scouts in Suffolk County Council (BSA), please call 631.924.7000.
Naturally Lowering Cholesterol (NAPSI)—If living a healthier life is your cup of tea, you may be interested in an easy way to improve your health—using the natural antioxidant powers of tea. Almost half of all Americans are overweight and have dangerously high levels of cholesterol. Heart attacks are still the No. 1 killer in the U.S. The problem is that high cholesterol and your risk
may be greater than you think. According to American Heart Association guidelines, the acceptable level of “bad cholesterol” is 30 percent lower than it used to be only a few years ago. This means that millions of Americans, including those who never dreamed they were at risk, now are. Fortunately, there are natural, nonprescription
alternatives for lowering cholesterol. For example, heart-healthy products such as TeaFlavin, an all-natural, caffeine-free capsule made from tea extract, contain as much cholesterol-fighting power as 35 cups of green tea. For more information on TeaFlavin, visit www. teaflavin.com or call (800) 876-4332.

Smithtown East is pleased to announce that Michael Zhang has been named as an Intel Science Talent Search Finalist. The STS “encourages students to pursue ambitious scientific questions and develop skills to solve the problems of tomorrow. Participants are judged on their original scientific research and their achievement and leadership, inside and outside of the classroom.” Zhang, a senior in the science research program at High School East, will compete with 39 other finalists in Washington, D.C. from March 7th13th for an opportunity to win up to $100,000
in scholarship awards. According to Ms. Zeitlin, the science research coordinator, “Michael exhibits all of the qualities of an Intel Finalist, and we are thrilled that he was one of only two finalists on Long Island. It is especially exciting that we have had back to back finalists in 2012 and 2013! He is in for the adventure of a lifetime, as he interacts with national leaders, Nobel Laureates, and the President of the United States.” Zhang’s project in the behavioral science category was mentored by Dr. Gregory Zelinsky at Stony Brook University. Dr. Zelinsky is an

The Boy Scouts of America’s Youth Protection Training (applicable to all Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts) for the volunteer scouting leaders was presented on January 26th at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp in Calverton, held during the recent Matinecock District’s annual Polar Bear Scouting Skills Competitions and Camporee Weekend. Because of the great concern the Boy Scouts of America has the safety of all Scouts and for the problem of child abuse in our society, the youth protection program was developed to safeguard both our youth and adult members. The BSA has been a leader in the creation and implementation of Youth Protection Training. ALL Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leaders are required to complete the BSA course in Youth Protection. Suffolk County Council requires renewing this training every two years. The course being presented is the Adult Leader Training (programs for youth and families were touched upon briefly but

associate professor of cognitive science and a joint associate professor of computer science. Zhang’s research titled, “Role-Inducted Perspective Visual Behavior during Scene Free-Viewing” used eye tracking hardware and software to investigate whether eye movements could be used to distinguish among roles (for example: thief) when viewing a scene (for example: airport). Several roles were inducted and many scenes were viewed. He found that perspectives did in fact have distinct eye movement characteristics, and could possess future decoding and security implications.
