ranch Brook Elementary School recently celebrated Penguin Center Day. After learning about penguins, the students read books about penguins, created webs and a KWL chart and took part in a penguin science experiment too. They shared a fun and educational center day. One of their centers was the Penguin Relay Race where the children waddled like penguins. Pictured are the studens donning their penguin beaks. A great time was had by all with this lesson.

Fourteen scouts from Boy Scout Troop 343 in Hauppauge worked on the Disabilities Awareness Merit Badge over the past month. At a recent Friday night troop meeting, scouts had the opportunity to experience what it may be like to be a person with visual or auditory impairments. Scouts were blindfolded and asked to negotiate around four construction cones with canes. They also were asked to throw basketballs at baskets with one arm tied behind their back. Lastly, they participated in a game of Simon Says while wearing earplugs. The boys reported that these simulations enhanced their empathy toward individuals who live their lives with physical and emotional disabilities.

Scout Sunday

The Matinecock District scouts and their volunteer scouting leaders participated in the annual A Scout Is Reverent Week, in recognition of the Boy Scouts of America and the 12th point of the Scout Law, during the first week in February. The youths attended and took part in leading services at all of the houses of worship both in the host Churches and Temples as well as at their local places of worship (some of which are the Cub Scout Pack, Boy Scout Troop, Venturing Crew or Explorer Post’s sponsoring organization). Cub Scouts from local Cub Scout Packs, with the assistance of their parents, leaders and Chaplain, recently completed the Parvuli Dei Catholic Scout Religious Emblems programs. These courses consist of activities and Bible studies designed to help the Scout become more aware of God’s presence in his daily life, especially within the home and community. By completing the requirements, the Scout has strengthened their spiritual growth and religious knowledge. Presentations of the Catholic Cub Scout Religious Emblems were made during the Celebration of the Mass at St. Anthony of Padua at Scout Sunday services. Said St. Anthony’s Scout Sunday Coordinators Ellene Byrne and Phyllis Stevenson, “Scouting For 103 years, the Boy Scouts of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service and community for millions of America’s youth. Scouting

has brought families and communities together for 103 years to prepare America’s youth to live, work, and play with character and integrity. Scouting is as vital and relevant today as it was when our journey began. The

Scout Sunday tradition was started to make people in houses of worship aware of Scouting, and to allow Scouts to live out their “Duty to God” pledged each week.” At St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church (East Northport) Boy Scouts Gareth Schaefer of Troop 52 (East Northport), Mathew Baron and Mark Baron of

Troop 41 (Northport), and Michael Schools of Troop 5 (East Northport) were Altar Servers. Readings were read by Eagle Scout Brian Tomeck of Troop 52 and Michael Klein of Troop 5. Tommy Weber of Troop 52 assisted the Cub Scouts with the Presentation of the Gifts. During the presentation of the Cub Scout Religious Emblems, John Paul Stevenson and Kyle Byrne of Troop 52 gave the explanation of the Parvuli Dei medal and read each of the Cub Scout’s names of the recipients. From the lectern, the Boy Scouts individually called up the youths and their parents to receive their award from Father Frank Greco and lined up to be recognized by the congregation. There were 13 Cub Scouts who were presented with the Parvuli Dei Catholic Cub Scout religious emblems. Parvuli Dei Emblem (Children of God) recipients had become more aware of God’s presence in their daily lives, especially within their homes, scout units, and the community. The scouts who receieved the emblems are Pack 406 (Huntington Station)’s Christopher Ballentine, Pack 5 (East Northport)’s Peter Ceonzo, Aidan Flinn, Andrew Jett, Simon Kabacinski, Nicholas Lourenco, Thomas McLaughlin, Giovanni Prestipino, Sean Schools, Luke Scimeme, Luke Squillante, Michael Turner and Stephen Whitcomb.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Spring has sprung. That’s it. I’ve decided. One sunny day amid a week of snow and sleet and rain, and it’s official. Enough of this winter wonderland nonsense. Funny, since we have really only had one substantial snowstorm over the course of the last three or so winters; but the one was… well, quite a storm, shall we say. And just like that, all the relatively pleasant winters of the past few years have been forgotten – wiped out from the collective memory. Isn’t that always the way? One season gives way to the

next – and we, as a society, go from complaining about the cold, to whining about the spring rain, to being exhausted by the oppressive heat…and then, oh no, here comes that autumn chill again! One endless cycle of wishing for something other than what we have, only to promptly wish it away as soon as it’s within our grasp. We are a flaky bunch, aren’t we? And to think other societies would give anything to live in a temperate climate such as ours, complete with four seasons – and the occasional natural disaster of course. Seriously, in the last year or

two, we’ve experienced two substantial hurricanes, a blizzard of epic proportions, a minor earthquake…am I forgetting anything else? Dare we ask – what next? Well, what’s next for me is spring. Beautiful, mild, clear and crisp. Spring. My favorite season, when the summer is still looming, everything is blooming and the days take on a renewed, vital energy that has been missing throughout the long winter of hibernation and doldrums. Sure, it may officially be a month or so away – but the mentality is here now. Embrace it.

Continued From 3 In order to earn the Disabilities Awareness Merit Badge, the scouts had to make a commitment to the counselor to show a positive attitude about people with disabilities and encourage positive attitudes in others. After doing more research and discussions within their troop meetings and with the merit badge counselor, Arid A camel needs little water because it sweats very little, and keeps most of the water that is in it’s body.

the scouts visited the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind on Jericho Turnpike in Smithtown, where they learned about the many ways that guide dogs assist individuals and the process of training future guide dogs. The scouts and parents met two dogs in training and toured the Guide Dog Foundation’s kennel and training arena, learning the import role of Puppy Walkers (people who keep

and socialize the dogs for the first year) and how to act around a working dog (ie, don’t pet the dog as he is the “eyes” of the person he is assisting). As a thank you for what the Guide Dog Foundation does for the sight-impaired community and for the tour of their training facility, Boy Scout Troop 343 members presented the Guide Dog Foundation with donations selected from the Guide Dog

Foundation’s suggested donation list, such as dog toys, towels, disinfectant cloths and jars of peanut butter. To complete the Disabilities Awareness Merit Badge, the Troop 343 scouts met with their Disabilities Awareness Merit Badge Counselor and scout parent, Dr Pamela Linden, at the Hauppauge Library to learn about the importance of using person-first language, career opportunities for people who are interested in assisting people with disabilities, as well as making accommodations for people with disabilities in public places and the types of adaptive sports for people with disabilities.

With all the snow that New York received last weekend, the question on everyone’s mind is, “When does spring begin?” Spring officially arrives on March 20th but most people associate the march toward spring with other events. For baseball fans, spring begins when pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training in Florida and Arizona. To others, it’s when they hear the chirping of happy birds who have returned from Florida. For New York soccer fans, the first sign of spring is the Long Island Junior Soccer League Convention. With over 1,500 travel and premier teams, the LIJSL is the largest soccer league in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA). The LIJSL Convention is annually one of the world’s largest soccer conventions and promises as always to have something for

everyone. 10,000 people are once again expected to flock to the convention from March 8th to 10th at the Huntington Hilton on Route 110 in Melville. The fun begins at 8 p.m. on Friday night, March 8th with the Club Recognition Dinner. The Volunteer of the Year from each LIJSL club will be honored. Dolores Jose of the Mineola Athletic Association, Mitch Pally of the Stony Brook Soccer Club, Bob Porter of the Cold Spring Harbor/ Huntington Soccer Club and Tom Vollmuth of the East Islip Soccer Club will be inducted into the LIJSL Hall of Fame at the dinner as well. Throughout the day on Saturday, March 9th and on Sunday morning, March 10th, there will be LIJSL Sportsmanship Award presentations, meetings for club presidents, coaches and volunteers plus coaches and referee clinics as thousands of

people purchase items from vendors who have come from around the world. There will also be a College Forum in English and Spanish on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. for all interested high school students and their families. Admission to the 31st Annual LIJSL Convention is free. “The Suffolk County Legislature is committed to helping keep the arts alive and giving recognition to our artists,” says Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick. Toward that end, Legislator Nowick created Art In The Alcove, which features a piece of sculpture in the alcove located off the lobby of the William Rogers Legislature Building at 725 Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge. It is open Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on weekends and holidays. On exhibit now until April 30, 2013 is Kaleidoscope Phone Booth created by Kathy Seff of Patchogue. She purchased an old phone booth off of Craigslist and transformed it into a kaleidoscope phone booth by covering it with pieces of mosaic glass and applying an epoxy finish to it. She also installed a non-working phone in the booth.
