WALKING FOR SUPPORT - The Cleary School for the Deaf in Nesconset recently participated in the Hearing Loss Association of America’s Walk 4 Hearing fundraiser held in Manhattan. The event raises money to increase awareness about hearing loss. It SUNDAY SUPPER - St. James Elementary School Leadership Club recently visited also serves to provide information and support for people with a hearing loss. Long Islanders can put their old bicycles to good use by donating them to Pedals For Progress, a program that rescues unwanted American bicycles and sends them to communities overseas. On Saturday, April 6th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., members of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island

with the children and teen programs of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island will accept donations of bicycles and sewing machines at the Ethical Humanist Society, 38 Old Country Road, Garden City (at the western end of Old Country Road, next to the blue water tower).

Fourteen scouts from Boy Scout Troop 343 in Hauppauge worked on the Disabilities Awareness Merit Badge over the past month. At a recent Friday night troop meeting, scouts had the opportunity to experience what it may be like to be a person with visual or auditory impairments.

Scouts were blindfolded and asked to negotiate around four construction cones with canes. They also were asked to throw basketballs at baskets with one arm tied behind their back. Lastly, they participated in a game of Simon Says while wearing earplugs. The boys reported that these simulations enhanced their empathy toward individuals who live their lives with physical and emotional disabilities.

In order to earn the Disabilities Awareness Merit Badge, the scouts had to make a commitment

to the counselor to show a positive attitude about people with disabilities and encourage positive attitudes in others.

After doing more research and discussions within their troop meetings and with the merit badge counselor, the scouts visited the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind on Jericho Turnpike in Smithtown, where they learned about the many ways that guide dogs assist individuals and the process of training future guide dogs. The scouts and parents met two dogs in training and toured the Guide Dog Foundation’s kennel and training arena, learning the import role of Puppy Walkers (people who keep and socialize the dogs for the first year) and how to act around a working dog (ie, don’t pet the dog as he is the “eyes” of the person he is assisting).

To complete the Disabilities Awareness Merit Badge, the Troop 343 scouts met with their Disabilities Awareness Merit Badge Counselor and scout parent, Dr Pamela Linden, at the Hauppauge Library to learn about the importance of using person-first language, career opportunities for people who are interested in assisting people with disabilities, as well as making accommodations for people with disabilities in public places and the types of adaptive sports for people with disabilities.

Recognition Breakfast February is recognized nationwide as Scouting Month in the United States, founded in 1910. The 12th point of the Scout Law is A Scout Is Reverent. A special way a Tiger, Cub or Webelos Scout, Boy Scout, Explorer Post, Venture Crew or Sea Scout Ship member, Brownie or Girl Scout can show this is with the earning of his/her individual faith’s religious emblem.

At 10 a.m. on Sunday morning, March 3rd, the Jewish Committee on Scouting of Suffolk County Council will recognize and honor past and present youth and adult recipients

of the Jewish Scouting Religious Emblems and Awards at Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge (870 Town Line Road, Hauppauge) at the annual JCOS Breakfast during the 103rd anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.

During special ceremonies, presentations of medals and certificates will be made to all Jewish Scouts who have earned their religious recognition since last year’s annual awards breakfast.

Adult volunteer Scouters will be honored with the Shofar Award, a National Jewish Committee on Scouting recognition

which can be presented on the local council level for significant service to Jewish Scouting and the Jewish Community. The JCOS Life Award, a special recognition of outstanding contribution or ability to overcome major concerns of life will also be presented.

Far too often, we are reminded of the fleeting nature of life; the fact that, in an instant, things can change, throwing any sense of normalcy and routine into complete upheaval. Whether by the hands of Mother Nature or some otherworldly force, many of these factors are far beyond our control, making it all the more crucial that we embrace those things we do, in fact, have control over.

One of my favorite films back in my high school Political Science class was Dead Poets Society, simply for the fact that its mantra of “Carpe Diem” seemed to make perfect sense. Seize the

The Chernow scholarship will be available to a qualifying full-time student enrolled in the School of

Journalism at Stony Brook University. The recipient must demonstrate a desire to pursue a career in journalism with a proven talent and interest in writing and language.

One recipient per year will be chosen by a selected committee appointed

by School of Journalism Dean, Howard Schneider.

What some people forget, “says Dean Schneider, “is that even in the age of YouTube, good writing is the key to good journalism, no matter how that journalism is delivered.

The Chernow scholarship will be invaluable in helping us to nurture that idea.”

speaker – Carol Chernow wrote several books on classroom teaching procedures and discipline, some of which remain in use today. However, it was literature, writing and teaching effective communication to a diverse group of children and adults that became her eventual focus and passion.

Chernow believed that one powerful way to open doors and promote equal opportunity was to equip all individuals with better language skills.

Beginning in 1963 with the publication of “Reading Exercises in Black History,” she turned her energies to both teaching and creating practical educational resources for individuals in various communities.

She held that race, ethnic background, economic status, birth language or prior educational experience must not be barriers to learning effective communication

day, capture the moment… live each day to the fullest.

You just never know what may be around the corner.

Certainly, there are times when something positive is on the horizon; surprises need not always portend tragedy and aggravation. It just seems that, on the whole, we as a society tend to take our lives – and those most important to us – for granted, never anticipating a day when this sense of contentment (read: complacency) might be turned upside down.

What can we do to prepare for this eventuality? Well, nothing and everything – all at the same time. There are those circumstances which reach far beyond our control;

the key is to take the given situation and make the most of it, and to move forward having learned something about ourselves. If this means taking more time to appreciate the little things in life…or savoring each moment with those we love… or simply reaching toward a long-unrealized goal… this is progress. This is positive.

This is appreciation.

This is not to say we will not each continually be faced with new obstacles each and every day – some minor, some life-changing – but at the very least, we will be better prepared to deal with them.

Carpe Diem always…

Those who seize the day are those who have few regrets.

Day Haven Adult Day Services, a program of The Community Program Centers of Long Island, will expand its services in Ronkonkoma for frail older adults, individuals with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia, and family caregivers. The expansion is supported by a recent $20,000 grant from the Knapp Swezey Foundation and a $5,000 grant from The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.

Day Haven’s Director,

Elizabeth A. Geary, states, “There is documented need for more social model adult day programs serving the increasing number of frail elders and those with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia.” Social model programs are recognized as a cost-effective model of care for older adults requiring supervision and assistance with activities of daily living as a result of a physical or cognitive deficit such as dementia.

According to data collected

by the New York State Office for the Aging, social model adult day programs suppot cognitive, physical and social functioning, resulting in delayed nursing home placement often for 24 months or more.

With the grant support, Day Haven will expand the square footage of program space. The new space will provide an additional program room, a handicapped accessible bathroom with shower

and hair salon capacity, and a caregiver support conference room where families can meet with Day Haven staff.

Day Haven Adult Day Services, with centers in Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma, provides day time care, professional supervision, and assistance with activities of daily living for frail older adults and individuals with dementia who are living at home in the community.

Day Haven also provides

caregiver services such as free support groups, educational events, and information referral services for families caring for a frail older adult or individual with Alzheimer’s disease.

Fine Art Exhibit The Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to announce its Juried Fine Art Exhibition Reflections to be held March 23rd through April 26th at the Mills Pond House Gallery, 660 Route 25A, St. James.

The public is invited to an opening reception on Saturday, March 23rd, from 2 to 4 p.m. to meet the participating artists and view their work.

Exhibition juror James Henry Rubin’s exhibit call for entries noted that Reflection be either a physical or a psychological phenomenon. Together they evoke the interplay between perception and conception.

He selected 42 artists for the exhibition, which will include 68 artworks in a wide variety of media including watercolor, oil, charcoal, bronze, archival prints, mixed media sculpture and more.

James Henry Rubin is an art historian specializing in the history, theory and criticism of nineteenthcentury European art, especially that of France. He has taught at Harvard University, Boston University and Princeton University and is currently Professor of Art History at Stony

Brook. He is the author of ten books, has served on the International Committee of the College Art Association and represented the CAA at the United Nations and is Vice President of the Société Paul Cézanne, based in Aix-en-Provence, France. He is a dual French-U.S. citizen, and lives in New York City and in Mittelbergheim, Alsace.

Inspiration To Inmates

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco welcomed Marion LazanBlumenthal, author of the book Four Perfect Pebbles, to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Riverside yesterday.

Lazan, who was interned in a concentration camp in her youth, talked with incarcerated minors and several groups of men and women at the jail, about her early life and the holocaust experience.

Also in attendance were members of the Sheriff’s Youth Reentry Task Force, including Dr. Francis Brisbane, Dean of SUNY’s School of Social Welfare and community volunteer, Liz Stokes, who had written to the author in the fall of 2012, and asked her to visit. Stokes

helps to moderate a selfhelp group and book club for incarcerated women at the Riverhead Correctional Facility.

DeMarco introduced Lazan at the gathering of approximately fifty inmates in the jail’s chapel.

He opened it up by saying: “I hope that you will listen, understand, and appreciate the message of hope, courage, and compassion that she will share with you today.”

Lazan spoke for approximately one hour, and at times paused to take questions or offer words of encouragement and hugs to some of the inmates who were visibly touched by her story. She reminded the group that, “No one is spared adversity. We all have issues to overcome.

Above all, don’t ever give up hope.” Two women and two teenage young men presented the author with four bouquets of flowers at the conclusion of her speech, symbolic of the “four perfect pebbles” in her book.

Following the event, DeMarco stated, “Incarceration isn’t easy, and while the experience of holocaust survivors was far more challenging and punitive than any American correctional setting, Marion’s story of survival and success resonated with our inmates. She drove home the message that regardless of their present circumstances in life, they can have a very good life if they are determined enough to change its course.”
