Opening Their Doors mithtown Schools throughout the District reopened their doors to over 10,000 students from grades K through 12. Dr. Anthony Annunziato, Superintendent of Schools, welcomed all students, from kindergarteners stepping into the classroom for the very first time to seniors returning for their final year. The weather may have been wet and damp, but emotions ran high and a sense of excitement was in the air. Best of luck to all this year!

Drug Take Back Day Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center’s Pharmacy Department has scheduled a drug “take back” day on Saturday, September 29th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in partnership with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. Members of the community may safely dispose of unused or

expired medications rather than discarding them in the garbage or flushing them down the toilet which could lead to e n v i r o n m e n t a l contamination. There will be bins in the hospital’s main lobby for the collection of these items. This past April, Good Samaritan successfully

collected more than 240 pounds of unused medications. Unused or expired pharmaceuticals can pose unnecessary risks to individuals and the community. Drug “take back” days offer a safe and environmentally friendly disposal program that proactively addresses potential hazards

associated with improper management. The program helps protect the natural environment, avoid accidental poisoning and helps prevent against prescription drug abuse. For further information on the proper disposal of unused or expired drugs, please call 631.376.4444.

Fun Fall Activities Hicks Nurseries is offering fun activities for families from September 15th through October 31st at 100 Jericho Turnpike in Westbury. Otto the Ghost returns in the free animated story Otto’s Crows Woes, where Otto aids his friends the scarecrow and the witch in saving their fall harvest of corn and pumpkins from the hungry crows. Glowing scenes and special effects make the show visually exciting and visitors are asked to be helpful like Otto by donating non perishable

food items to support the efforts of Long Island Cares. The weekends are packed with activities that include real live farm animals to visit (free) plus Otto’s Hay Ride and homemade fudge, fresh cider and roasted corn. To decorate the home there will be hay bales, corn stalks, gourds and lots of pumpkins for sale. Special children’s workshops are offered during the week. Reservations can be made by calling 516.334.0066. • Decorate Otto’s

Krispie House on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, October 23rd, 24th and 25th at 4:30 p.m. Cost: $12 + tax per child. Children are invited to turn a house made out of rice krispies into a home for Otto the Ghost. Hicks will supply the house and all of the candy and icing. The house, which measures 7 inches by 8 inches, is totally edible. • Children’s Pumpkin Decorating Workshop on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, October 16th, 17th and 18th at 4:30 p.m. Cost: $8 + tax per child.

Children are invited to decorate a pumpkin for Halloween with paints and other fall-themed accessories, all supplied by the nursery. The store is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and until 8 p.m. on Fridays. Hicks Nurseries, Long Island’s largest garden nursery (established by the Hicks family in 1853), is located at 100 Jericho Turnpike in Westbury; 5 1 6 . 3 3 4 . 0 0 6 6 ; www.hicksnurseries.com.

Comings & Goings By: Jamie Lynn Ryan “Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.” Those are the words my eyes fell on as I began this column. How very appropriate. Transitioning from vacation mode back into “real world” work mode has to be one of the more difficult processes known to man. I’m sure there are worse; but, at the moment, this feels like the steepest climb. Forget the 600+ e-mails that piled up while I was away. Never mind the sheer volume of stuff that managed to accumulate in every corner of life over the course of six days. (Six days. Not even a full week!) But what about the intangible “stuff” – all those

subtle things you tend to miss out on during any extended absence? The latest news and gossip… the various comings and goings of others… all those little daily nuances we barely notice… Sometimes, it seems like we are starting from square one, doesn’t it? So much for momentum. I suppose most of the area school children must feel the same way. Just when they get into the groove of lessons and homework and exams – that’s it. Summer vacation. Time to vegetate, and forget all that they’ve learned, over the next two months. Two whole months. Can you imagine being off from work for that long, with the expectation of having to climb back into a set

routine, meet deadlines and – oh yeah – not lose your mind in the process? I can’t. Absence can do many things – clear your head, refresh your motivation, make your heart grow fonder for whatever it is you may be fond of – but one thing it rarely does is eliminate the stress you will inevitably face upon your return. No one has managed to figure that one out yet. Does this make the absence any less worthwhile? No, I don’t think so. Because, for whatever headache you may be greeted with when you come back, the deep breath you take as you go is one to savor. And we could all use a little calming of the mind.

On Saturday September 29th, The Long Island Museum will open its doors free of charge along with over 1,400 other participating venues for the eighth annual Museum Day Live! This immensely successful program, in which the Long Island Museum will emulate the free admission policy of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, D.C.-based facilities, encourages learning and the spread of knowledge nationwide. Inclusive by design, Museum Day Live! fulfills Smithsonian Media’s mission to make cultural education accessible to everyone. For one day only, the Long Island will grant free access to visitors who download a Museum Day Live! ticket at Smithsonian.com. Last year’s event drew over 350,000 museum-goers nation-wide, and this year’s Museum Day Live!

is expected to attract close to 400,000 participants. “The affiliation between the Long Island Museum and the Smithsonian Institution is a wonderful opportunity for intellectual exchange,” said Jackie Day, Museum President and CEO. “We are always looking for ways this partnership can benefit the museum and its constituents, and Museum Day Live! offers an opportunity for us to reach new audiences.” Located at 1200 Route 25A in Stony Brook, the Long Island Museum is dedicated to American history and art with a Long Island connection. The Museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The exhibitions featured in this year’s Museum Day Live! event include Long Island, America’s 1950s Frontier featuring iconic

1950s photographs, artifacts and fashions, and William Sidney Mount: Country Scenes for City Patrons, featuring some of Mount’s most well-known genre paintings, typifying the work for which he became famous. For more information about the Long Island Museum, visit longislandmuseum.org or call 631.751.0066. The Museum Day Live! ticket will be available to download at Smithsonian.com/museu mday. Visitors who present the Museum Day Live! ticket will gain free entrance for two at participating venues for one day only. One ticket is permitted per household, per e-mail address. These groups consist of local caregivers and a support staff that listen, counsel, and give them a voice to be heard by others in the same or similar situations. The purpose of the event is to generate awareness in caregivers about a new caring and healing support group planned to launch at the Bristol in East Northport, and to and offer caregivers the support they need. Under the banner of Caring For The Caregiver, the first caregiver fair launched at St. Bede’s Episcopal Church in Syosset nearly three years ago, and since then, the number of caregivers who have been helped by this organization has grown in leaps and bounds. Everyone knows someone in their community who is a caregiver. Caregivers are typically cast into their roles when a family member or friend becomes sick or disabled, often ignoring their own needs to assist their loved ones. At times, they feel alone, overwhelmed and overstressed. Now, help is on the way with the newest Caring For The Caregiver fair, to be held on Saturday, September 15th, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. 1.

Dear Readers, I am so disappointed in the response - or, should I say, lack of response - by the town of Smithtown to the slaughter of close to 28 cats (my previous number of 15 was incorrect) at the town shelter. I was told by an exasperated office worker that the phone in Supervisor Vecchio’s office was ringing off the hook and that Supervisor Vecchio “wasn’t going to do anything about the shelter.” She refused to give me her name. Supervisor Vecchio did not return my phone call. Calls were sent right over to the shelter and, depending on when you called, you received the following excuse: “yes, rescue organizations were called,” or “the cats were sick.” Neither of those excuses were true. However, if shelter director G. Beatty found the shelter was overcrowded or he needed to “clean up the shelter” due to an official visit, all avenues to save lives should have been explored: adoption events (there were none)...contacting our wonderful rescue organizations (none received a call). Readers, what steps do you think the public should take to effect change at the Smithown Shelter? Please send me your comments. Readers, if you are trying to volunteer at the Hempstead Town Animal Shelter or are “on hold” awaiting orientation, please send me an e-mail. The animals are languishing in their cages as they continue to wait for the animal shelter to get its act together.

The Smithtown Chamber cordially invites you to their exciting Dine with Wine 2012 program, introducing a new ‘ spin’ on Restaurant Week. They wanted to jump start the program early in September to get everyone back from the beach, back to school and back to dining at our fabulous local eateries. As in the past, all participating restaurants will be offering a $25 price fixed menu that includes an appetizer, an entrée and dessert, plus the first glass of wine for $5 (from a selected wine list). If you’re not a ‘wine’ person, perhaps this opportunity might be a good week to start! The dates are Sunday, September 9th through Sunday, September 16th, with the exclusion of Saturday evening at 7 p.m. when restaurants will be able to reinstate their regular menus and

prices for the balance of Saturday evening. Surrounded by magnificent restaurants, the Smithtown Township has become a soughtafter community as one of the best dining destinations on Long Island. There are 30 participating restaurants included in the Dine with Wine program in the areas of Commack, Hauppauge, Kings Park, Nesconset, St. James and Smithtown offering every cuisine for every palate. Look forward to experiencing the many dining choices such as: Italian, Thai, Spanish, Japanese, Portuguese, Mexican, Cuban and good old American favorites. The reunion provided an opportunity for increased connectivity and social support for members of the young MS community. The celebration also provided a chance to share their experiences with each other and the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Lourie Center. Maisha Leonard, 27, from Setauket, a longtime patient of Dr. Krupp and the first patient treated at the Center, attended the reunion. Maisha’s diagnosis fueled Dr. Krupp’s inspiration to develop a pediatric MS center at Stony Brook. Approximately 15 other patients and their families took part in the celebration. Many of the patients already knew each other from the Teen Adventure Program (TAP) that is run by the Lourie Center each summer. In its eight year, the TAP is a unique program designed to teach young MS patients about their disease and ways to live a healthy life. On Monday evening, August 27th, students, faculty and administrators at Suffolk County Community College convened on the Ammerman Campus for an Academic Convocation. The Convocation coincided with the first day of classes for the fall semester at the College. The program included a welcoming address from Dr. Shaun L. McKay, President of the College; a keynote address by H. Carl McCall, Chairman of the State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees and remarks by Dafny Irizarry, Chairwoman of the College’s Board of Trustees. In addition, the College welcomed faculty members and students, honored six SUNY Chancellor Award recipients, two Professor Emeritus designees and one faculty member recently honored with a special state-wide award. While addressing the audience, Dr. McKay noted, “Today we celebrate the College’s progress, the success of our faculty, students and staff, all

while discussing our plans for the future. There are many things to be proud of as we move forward into the 2012-2013 academic year. In May, we graduated the largest class in the history of Suffolk County Community College with 4,012 graduates; last year, our College had the largest number of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) students in the country selected from a single institution to conduct research during the summer at the nation’s leading laboratories. Additionally, our workforce and training programs are consistently heralded for their excellence and their impact on the community.” For a full summary of the College’s accomplishments for the past year, access the following link: http://www.sunysuffolk.ed u/About/accomplishments 1112.asp. Carl McCall, Chairman of the State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees. “I know the value of a liberal arts education because it was my education – it broadened my thinking and gave me the skills to succeed. I also know that SUNY’s community colleges know how to deliver the kind of liberal arts experience that molds leaders and innovators in all fields, because we see them do it year after year.”

children, MS affects approximately eight-toten thousand children in the U.S. “These children and young adults who we have treated for years should be proud of how they have handled the challenges of their disease,” said Dr. Krupp. “We were thrilled to celebrate with them and mark the 10-year anniversary of the Center.” Dr. Krupp said that because MS is characterized by relapsing and remitting symptoms with unpredictable timing, children are particularly affected by the disease course, not only physically, but also emotionally. For these reasons, Dr. Krupp explained, patient and family access to pediatric MS specialists and other professionals at a multidisciplinary center is critical for integrating care of the multiple facets of the disease and addressing the well-being of the patients and their families. Comprehensive care that emphasizes the continuity of services is also essential for the longterm management of the disease.

The Lourie Center for Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis (MS) at Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital hosted a patient reunion that brought the first pediatric MS patient treated at Stony Brook together with newer patients to celebrate. The event, held at the Wang Center on the Stony Brook University campus, marked the 10year anniversary of the opening of the Center, which was founded by Lauren Krupp, M.D., Professor of Neurology, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and Pediatric MS Program Director. In 2002, the National Pediatric MS Center at Stony Brook was formed to address the unmet medical needs of children with MS. The Center was the first of its kind in the nation. This year Stony Brook University received a $2.5 million gift from Robert and Lisa Lourie to advance research and clinical care at the Center, which was subsequently renamed in their honor.
