In their group, they tied both games on Saturday 0-0 against FC Bucks Fusion from Pennsylvania East and SAC Premier from Maryland. The Hotspur needed to win the last group game against New York’s Albertson Fury 99 in order to advance to finals.

The Hotspur came out with great energy and determination, scoring with three minutes left to win 21 and advance to the championship game.

The National Family Partnership® (NFP) announces the national contest for its 27th Annual Red Ribbon Week®, October 23rd31st. Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country.

In 1985 after the murder of a DEA agent, parents, youth and teachers in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the destruction caused by drugs. This year, families can get involved by entering a contest to promote awareness in their neighborhoods and win a drug prevention grant for their schools.

On Saturday, September 29th, Legislator Sarah Anker attended Mather Hospital’s 16th Annual Breast Cancer Victory Day. Held to kick off October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the event provided solidarity, hope, triumph and togetherness for all who have been touched by breast cancer. Hundreds of survivors, family members and supporters received

information on treatment and services and received emotional support from others who have shared their experience.

Inspirational speakers included breast cancer survivors and activists Geri Barish, President and Founder of The 1 in 9 Breast Cancer Action Coalition, and Saranne Rothberg, CEO and Founder of The C o m e d y C u r e s Foundation.

“I look forward to this event each year.

In addition to bringing increased awareness of the fight against breast cancer, the event also provides much needed funds to continue the fight against breast cancer,” said Legislator Anker.

All proceeds of the event will be donated to the Fortunato Breast Health Center at Mather Hospital.

Catching Up By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Back in June, when I officially “retired” from dancing, I assumed that with this newfound free time would come the unintended benefit of being able to catch up – watching the hours of TV shows I never seemed to be home for, going through the ever-growing pile of magazines collecting on my desk, or perhaps even tackling a book or two.

Well, here we are, four months later, and I have to say – even if I took an entire day off to do the aforementioned things, I would probably barely make a dent.

What are we, four weeks into the new TV season? I would say, cumulatively, that

I have about 12 hours or so of unwatched episodes to catch up on. Not that there’s really any point, since one glance at the social media sites pretty much ruins any suspenseful plot twists.

And the magazines… well they’re fairly outdated for the most part. Still entertaining, but the list of upcoming events tends to lose some impact when they have all already passed, wouldn’t you say?

Books… well, let’s just say that the only time I have managed to read an entire book (at least, since leaving school) is if I take it with me on vacation. Because, let’s face it, the plot tends to lose something when there’s a three-month gap between chapters.

It’s amazing that when you

subtract certain obligations from your life, there always seem to be about 20 more that immediately crop up to fill the void. It makes you wonder how it’s even possible to accomplish what you need to.

But I suppose we do manage, somehow. We find the time for those things we truly want to do; and we manage to avoid those things we would rather push to the bottom of the list.

Simple human nature. Not the most practical or rational of practices, but still – it is how most of us tend to conduct our lives.

Perhaps we should all take a page out of one of those unread “self-help” books and adjust our schedules to fill the void with some free time.

The Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center recently presented $82,000 to The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation to support the hospital’s Emergency Department and Critical Care Services.

This gift brought the Guilds’ 2012 donations to a total of more than $222,000 for various programs, including pediatrics, the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and emergency medicine. Made up of volunteers from s u r r o u n d i n g communities, the Guilds have helped sustain the hospital for more than 50 years.

“The Good Samaritan Foundation Board is very

grateful for all that the Guilds do for the hospital.

We fully support their decision on how the funds are to be allocated to further deliver quality services to the community”, said The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation Vice Chairperson Aileen Eppig.

This most recent Guild donation will enhance emergency care with the acquisition of a Glidascope and Sonosite, video guided and ultrasound devices used by an anesthesiologist or critical care physician when caring for critically ill patients. The Guilds’ donation will also support trauma service with an EKG machine for use in the Emergency

Department.

Health Forum Support high-risk drinking.

During the three-day conference, Stony Brook University representatives led by Jenny Hwang, PhD, Director of University Counseling, presented their progress in harm reduction and helping students make safer choices regarding alcohol use. The team conducted a presentation for their peer schools on “Think Again,” a student-developed social norms campaign designed to inform the campus community of alcohol use on campus. Campus statistics show that students overestimate the percentage of their peers who are engaged in heavy or high-risk drinking.

Since 2011, Stony Brook University has been a member of the National College Health Improvement Project (NCHIP), a nationwide learning collaborative that seeks to combat high-risk drinking behavior on college campuses through data-driven, communitywide efforts involving several areas of the University. The goals are to increase effective education and prevention models, ensure enforcement of policies and laws, and early intervention for those at risk.

“We’re seeing the impact of institutional commitment and thoughtful, systematic engagement of our students to help increase the health and safety of the campus community,” said Dr. Hwang. “It’s not about dumping information into students’ heads - it’s about engaging them in a process as critical thinkers around what matters to them and how health and wellness play a role in being able to stay close to their goals, aspirations and values.”

The Washington D.C. session was the third faceto-face meeting of this unique “learning

collaborative” led by the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice at Dartmouth College.

Campus improvement teams participated in strategysharing sessions on the subjects of “pre-gaming,” off-campus parties and other high-risk behaviors.

According to statistics from the National Institute for Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, these high-risk behaviors result in the death of approximately 1,800 college students across the nation each year and contribute to hundreds of thousands of injuries, sexual assaults and academic failures.

Since joining the collaborative, Stony Brook has seen several positive improvements in student health and safety across campus, including an increase in Red Watch Band membership, Stony Brook’s bystander intervention program, and increased help-seeking behavior by students.

At their first center, the kindergarteners pretended that they were scientists.

The students were asked to predict if all apples had the same amount of seeds

and they counted and examined the seeds in their apple.

At the next center, they had the opportunity to use the Smarboard to identify and label the parts of an apple. They were able to make and label their own apple.

Staff of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center’s Emergency Department and Dialysis Center in Bay Shore are using new scanners, ventilators and a patient monitoring system. What many may not know is the extraordinary woman whose generous donation made the purchase of this equipment was made possible.

Helen Dodd - who died in 2007, a few months before her 105th birthday - bequeathed to Good Samaritan Hospital a generous gift of $1.6 million. The intent of her donation was that monies be used to support health care services to the medically needy. Mrs. Dodd’s niece, Bettie Grinnell, and nephew, Arthur Field have provided direction as to her charitable legacy.

While donations for A Journey Four Paws are still coming in, Irene estimates to have raised a about two thousand dollars at this point, to be split and donated to the Long Island Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation and to Central Suffolk Paws a division of LI-Dog. Both beneficiaries were picked because they are close to Irene’s heart and because she suffers from Arthritis and the town in which she lives desperately needs a dog park.

Central Suffolk Paws is working with the Town of Brookhaven to build a dog park, and the money donated will go towards building one in the near future.

Irene is also turning 50 in the early part of 2013 and really wanted to mark her 50th year with a unique way to give back too!

On October 27th at 7 p.m., Operation SPLASH (Stop Polluting Littering and Save Harbors ) will host the first-ever screening of the new documentary-short, Standing Against The Tide, The Story Of Operation SPLASH. This eye-opening documentary will appropriately debut at the Freeport Museum on the Nautical Mile.

The film was written, produced, directed and edited by Hofstra University students Corey Protin and Alexandra Faul.

This 15-minute movie documents the 22-year history of Operation SPLASH and their neverending battle against polluted Long Island waterways. “Working on this project has opened my eyes to Long Island’s large environmental issues which I think every resident should know about,” said Alexandra Faul. Both students will be graduating this May with a Bachelor degrees in video,

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is set to receive a $20,000 grant from the NYS Office of Substance Abuse Services to support its addiction services in Suffolk County, thanks to the efforts of NYS Assemblyman Bob Sweeney. Specifically, the grant funds the expansion of LICADD’s Start2Stop program, which provides drug and alcohol information, solutionfocused counseling, peer support and treatment referrals to local residents of all ages.

Start2Stop is a twelve week program directed to those who have had involvement with drug or alcohol use, and may have had professional or personal consequences, but not as a violent or high-level offense.

Smithtown High School West held its 2nd Annual H o m e c o m i n g Neighborhood Parade & Carnival on Saturday, October 6th.

Over 25 student clubs, organizations and athletic

teams marched in the parade and sponsored tables at the carnival for the Smithtown community.

This year, HSW, renewed the tradition of having class homecoming

floats be a part of the parade. Each class built a float around the theme of “holidays.”

The event culminated with the annual Homecoming Football game vs. Walt Whitman at 4 p.m.

(NAPSI)—There are steps parents and others can take to drive down the dreadful rate of traffic injuries and fatalities. An estimated 6,000 people are killed and 500,000 people are injured annually because someone was texting, e-mailing or talking on a mobile phone while driving.

The Facts Dr. Joel Haber, a clinical psychologist and LG Text Ed council member, explains that for teens, texting and driving is an even bigger problem than it is for adults.

First, kids text more.

Texting is their preferred mode of communication.

According to a recent LG Text Ed survey conducted

by LG Mobile phones, while half of all teens admit to texting while driving, only 4 percent of parents are aware of this.

Second, teens are inherently novices when it comes to driving. They especially need to focus on the road to compensate for any lack of driving skill or experience.

Third, teens can literally be driven to distraction. If a teen is caught up in a

dramatic or tense texting conversation, it could be too enticing to focus on the phone instead of the road.

The Stats The U.S. government’s official website on distracted driving, www.distraction.gov, cites multiple statistics on the dangers of this careless behavior: • Using a mobile phone while driving, whether it’s handheld or hands-free, delays a driver’s reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent.

• Driving while using a mobile phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent.

• Drivers who use handheld devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves as those who don’t.

• An estimated 11 percent of drivers are talking on cell phones while driving at any point during the day.

The Steps 1. Impress upon teens the need to not text or talk

on the phone while driving by not doing so yourself.

Beyond providing an example of responsible behavior, this creates a safer driving environment.

2. Explain to your teens the seriousness of the situation and let them know that it is important to have a plan in order to avoid temptation. For example, have them always keep their cell phone off while driving or in the backseat out of reach to avoid distraction completely.

As part of its Text Education campaign, LG offers insights and solutions on how to avoid possibly harmful behaviors such as distracted driving.
