By: Jamie Lynn Ryan This holiday season, it seems especially appropriate to reflect on those things we are thankful for, individually and collectively. Considering all that most of us have been through – and continue to go through – over the last month, I believe most of us have found a new appreciation for those things formerly taken for granted. For one, if you are fortunate enough to spend this Thanksgiving holiday with your family, friends and loved ones, consider yourself ahead of the game. Sure, you may have to forgo the traditional turkey dinner at home, but was the holiday ever truly about the food to begin with?
Perhaps, for some. Food, coupled with football and Black Friday shopping, right? Well this year, it is about something else, something far more important to the big picture. Togetherness. Compassion. Charity. That sense of fulfillment that only comes from these qualities… if only it didn’t take natural disasters and national tragedies to bring this sort of behavior out. I suppose the better part of human nature is always there, just below the surface, pushed aside by the daily monotony of life’s obligations. But to see it on display… that’s something the likes of which we don’t witness nearly often enough. This Thanksgiving – and
Christmas, while we’re at it – the emphasis should be on the people we choose to celebrate with. The rest is material – the food, the gifts, the decorations – and can be modified on the fly. But the people… they cannot be replaced. We have all lost a lot over this last month; at the very least, a sense of security and complacency. Maybe this isn’t a bad thing. Perhaps it is a reminder that we should never take things for granted, and should always be moving forward. You simply never know when things will come to a grinding standstill. Let’s all enjoy the moments and the memories this holiday season. Absorb each and every one and savor them. Happy Thanksgiving.

sundries were obtained and assembled in every heated building at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. A hearty breakfast has been provided before dawn every day by volunteers and staff, enabling the work crews to be fed and on their job sites at the break of light. The Council also organized a clothing drive to assist members of the community who lost possessions in the hurricane. A large quantity of clothing has been collected both at the Council Service Center in Medford and at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. It is not too late to contribute! New or used clothing in good condition can be dropped off at the Council Service Center, 7 Scouting Boulevard in Medford, or at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp, 1774 Sound Avenue in Calverton. While the Council organized these largescale relief efforts, local districts and units organized smaller efforts targeting the hardest hit c o m m u n i t i e s , volunteering their time to help their neighbors in any way they can. Boy Scout Troops and Venturing Crews have been active in helping residents with skills learned in the Scouting program. As the overall relief effort continues to unfold, additional requests have been made of the Boy Scouts and the response has been in line with the Scout Slogan - “Do A Good
Turn Daily.” Governmental agencies such as the Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management have asked Baiting Hollow Scout Camp to assist with displaced families, families that have borne the brunt of Hurricane Sandy. Once again, the Boy Scouts jumped in with a “can-do” attitude and found a way to provide up to 18 families with lodging, breakfast, and dinner at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp for the foreseeable future. A sense of community and a strong desire to put the needs of others before ones own has driven the Boy Scouts response. Council staff and volunteers have been working around the clock to help emergency workers, displaced families, those with lost possessions, and those with basic needs like a hot shower or a bag of ice. FEMA, working through National Grid and the Suffolk County government, has provided the needed funding for the facilities, equipment, food, laundry services, and other essentials, and for that we are grateful. Most of all, though, we are thankful and proud of the volunteers who have worked every day to help our neighbors, using vacation time or working the volunteer effort like a second job, going to work during the day and caring for those in need at night. We couldn’t be more proud of our volunteers!

Providing Relief Hurricane Sandy left a wake of destruction in Suffolk County and the Boy Scouts of America mobilized to provide support for the recovery effort. Suffolk County Council, BSA, holds a charter from the Boy Scouts of America National Council and is responsible for delivering the Scouting program to Suffolk County communities. The Boy Scouts of America motto is “Be Prepared,” and Suffolk County Council was ready to provide support and service in a number of ways. Immediately following Hurricane Sandy, the Council’s Baiting Hollow Scout Camp opened to the community to provide hot showers, hot coffee, and bags of ice. Even though the camp sustained significant tree damage, none of the camp structures suffered serious harm. Providing showers, coffee, and ice was the first of a number of services provided by the Boy Scouts. A few days after the hurricane struck, National Grid contacted the Council to ask if Baiting Hollow Scout Camp could house and feed out-ofstate utility workers. Even though this request was unexpected, Council staff and volunteers rallied and, within 24 hours, provided sleeping quarters and meal preparation for up to two hundred emergency workers. Cots, blankets, linens, towels, and other

direct assistance to employees impacted by the storm. Funds raised will be distributed through hospitals and health care organizations. Other associations involved in this national fund raising effort include the Northern Metropolitan Hospital Association, New Jersey Hospital Association, the Iroquois Healthcare Alliance, Rochester Regional Healthcare Association, and Western New York Healthcare Association. “Hospital employees demonstrated tremendous dedication during this crisis,” said Kevin Dahill, president/CEO of the NSHC. “These individuals suffered serious personal loss – many are now homeless – even as they worked to ensure the safety of those in their care. The fund is intended to assist those health care workers so that they will
continue to be there for us when we need their care and expertise.” The Hospital Council and other sponsoring associations ask everyone to spread the word about this fund and consider donating to the Hurricane Sandy Health Care Employee Relief Fund. Dahill added that the fund is an excellent way for any patient or family member who has received exceptional health care services in the past to show their appreciation for this care by helping these health care workers’ colleagues rebuild their lives. Go to http://uhfnyc.org/hurrican e_sandy_relief_fund to make a tax-deductible donation. Checks can also be mailed to United Hospital Fund, 1411 Broadway, 12th Floor, New York, NY 10018-3496, Attn: Hurricane Relief Fund.

Court Of Honor At the October 19th Boy Scout Troop 343’s annual Fall Court of Honor, held at Bretton Woods Elementary School in Hauppauge, the youth members of the troop were recognized with rank advancements and merit badges they had earned since the previous Troop Court of Honor in the springtime. In front of parents and siblings, the eight scouts were presented with Boy Scout, Second Class, First Class, Star, and Eagle Bronze Palm Rank advancements and 97 merit badges that were earned during summer camp at Camp Minsi Scout Reservation (Penna) and during the summer and fall months with local merit badge counselors. Two scouts earned the prestigious World Conservation Award. Also presented were
“warrants” and scouting uniform patches to identify their new leadership positions within Troop 343. These included: JASM’s (Junior Assistant Scoutmasters) John Carratore, Thomas Crociata, and Rocco Recce, Senior Patrol Leader Sal Sparacino, Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders Matt Fortmeyer, Josh Linden, and Ryan O’Dea. Scouts were also recognized from their week-long camping experiences at Camp Minsi Scout Reservation in Penna with Frigid Froggy Awards, (for their daily early morning swim) and with the Ace Award for shooting five arrows into the bullseye of the target. Both the scouts and their scout leaders were presented with “year pins” to indicate how many years they had been
involved in the scouting program. There was a special ceremony for Assistant Scoutmaster Paul Merget, who was presented with his Wood Badge Training Beads (an advanced Scouting Leader training program). It was also announced that that Scout Eamon Phelan had passed his Board of Review and will have his Eagle Scout Court of Honor in January. He will become Troop 343’s Eagle Scout #81 since the troop began in 1968. For more information about Boy Scout Troop 343 (sponsored by St. Thomas More R.C. Beware The Emotional Toll the signs of emotional distress and the Crisis Center has put together a list of warning signs for people to consider: · Sleeping too much or too little · Stomachaches or headaches · Anger, feeling edgy or lashing out at others · Overwhelming sadness · Worrying a lot of the time · Feeling like you have to keep busy · Lack of energy or always feeling tired · Drinking alcohol, smoking or using tobacco more than usual or using illegal drugs · Eating too much or too little · Not connecting with others · Feeling like you won’t ever be happy again Just as important as knowing the warning
signs of distress is the importance of knowing when to ask for help…and that help is available: · Call Long Island Crisis Center, 24 hours a day/7 days a week at 516.679.1111 · Chat online with a counselor at www.licconline.org · Text “LICC” to 839863 “The Crisis Center was able to continue its 24/7 hotlines throughout the power outages. Counselors spoke to many people who were in the midst of dealing with various stages of destruction and loss in their lives due to Hurricane Sandy,” adds Ms. Leonard. “Now we need to make sure that help and support get to those who are trying to manage and survive the disaster emotionally.”
Recently, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced an emergency sales tax relief program to ease the costs of reconstructing Suffolk County's small businesses. “Sandy was a devastating storm that affected many small businesses in Suffolk. This program will provide immediate relief for our businesses to rebuild,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. The program provides relief from state and local sales tax on building materials such as windows, sheet rock, flooring and electrical as well as on equipment a business needs to replace that was damaged by the storm. Anthony Manetta the IDA’s Executive Director said, “Making sure our companies operate again efficiently is a main
priority. We have streamlined the IDA process to get our companies to start rebuilding quickly and more cost effectively.” The program will provide sales tax relief for purchase of building materials and for the repurchase of equipment of up to $100,000 in purchase costs. There will be 200 businesses eligible for the program. A business must have 25 or fewer full-time employees to participate. Joanne Minieri, Commissioner of Economic Development & Planning, and IDA Board Member added, “It is absolutely critical that small businesses open and operate again. They are the lifeblood of our local economy.” When a small business owner takes advantage of the IDA's relief program,
the agency will facilitate discussions between them and the Town they operate in. The Town will be able to communicate directly with the business to determine if there are any issues they can develop solutions for. “Partnering with the Towns gives an added level of support to the local business owners in need of help. They could have a question on permitting, or where to access certain Town specific forms,” said IDA Executive Director Anthony Manetta. Small business owners who have had their place of business damaged by Super Storm Sandy are urged to fill out a relief form at w w w. S u f f o l k I D A . o r g . These past few weeks has been a catastrophic episode in the lives of so many in our Long Island community. With so many agencies, organizations and volunteers working towards a speedy recovery and clean-up, it seems that lives will be back to normal soon. “However, we know that disasters can take a great emotional toll on those impacted by them and can be longer-lasting than the disaster itself,” according to Linda Leonard, Executive Director of Long Island Crisis Center. “As people resume their routine lifestyles and less media attention is given to the crisis, there are those who will be left thinking they are alone and isolated.” At this stage, it is important to recognize

Funds Raised For Families The North Shore-LIJ Health System announced today it has raised about $2.3 million for a relief fund that will be used primarily to benefit hundreds of employees’ families devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Within 48 hours of landfall, the 16hospital health system had placed 62 families into temporary housing, and those efforts have continued for hundreds of additional employees who were displaced. In addition, through the health system’s dedicated Emergency
Employee Resource Center (EERC), North Shore-LIJ employees have already contributed over 1,000 vacation hours – totaling 137 business days – to impacted employees who will need to take time off to try to get their lives back in order. The EERC also has an online Community Forum where employees who want to help their coworkers in need can connect with them to coordinate direct donations, rides to work and other assistance. “Considering how so many North Shore-LIJ
employees care for their patients during their critical hours of need, we’re proud to step up and take care of our colleagues when they need it most,” said Michael Dowling, president and chief executive officer of North Shore-LIJ. “Even after Hurricane Sandy left death and destruction in her wake, there are untold stories of North Shore-LIJ caregivers who continued to come to work, despite losing their homes and most of their possessions to flooding and fires. Their
extraordinary selfsacrifice, dedication and commitment are truly inspiring. Equally inspiring is the outpouring of support from North Shore-LIJ employees for their struggling coworkers. I extend my deepest appreciation to all of our employees who have generously donated money and time off to their colleagues in need.” Hundreds of North Shore-LIJ employees have already benefited from the health system’s employee relief efforts. Following are a few of
their stories. Of the $2.3 million pledged thus far for relief efforts, about $2 million represent the proceeds from Monday evening’s Lenox Hill Autumn Ball at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan. Event proceeds typically go toward the hospital’s capital projects, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and the destruction it caused throughout the tri-state area, Mr. Dowling decided to redirect funds from the event toward North Shore-LIJ’s employee relief fund, as well as
charities supporting other hurricane victims in the community. Those wishing to support the effort can send a donation by check payable to the North Shore-LIJ Hurricane Sandy Employee Relief Fund and mail it to: NSLIJ Health System Foundation, 125 Community Drive, Great Neck, NY, 11021, or contribute on line at: https://support.northshor elij.com/sandyrelief. hardship from Hurricane Sandy. It’s times like these that all Americans, including the soccer community, come together to help,” commented ENYYSA President Richard Christiano. “We applaud
Region I’s generosity in helping those adversely affected and Eastern New York will match every grant they approve for our members.”
Hurricane Relief With homes and businesses destroyed, a gasoline shortage plus some people still without power and heat nine days after Hurricane Sandy, many New York soccer leagues have cancelled games for the foreseeable
future. The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) and Region I, both under the umbrella of the United States Youth Soccer Association, are providing relief to soccer clubs and leagues
adversely affected by the hurricane. Region 1 is offering up to $2,000 in grants and ENYYSA will match every grant approved by Region I. Applications must be returned to the ENYYSA office at 53 North Park
Avenue, Suite 103, Rockville Centre, NY 11570, prior to the Region I, December 15th deadline. The application is attached. “Many of our members have suffered a tremendous amount of

It’s snowing as I write this and, like many of you, I haven’t had electricity for ten days now. I’m wearing multiple layers of clothing and gloves, and it feels as if I’ll never be able to get warm again. But I need to reach out to you because our friends, our neighbors and our community needs our assistance. The following Town Shelters and Rescues are reaching out for the community’s help...
placed. Some are waiting for the power to be turned back on; others need to rebuild. These people are living with friends and in shelters. One of their serious concerns is their beloved pets. What we’re trying to organize is a list of people available to help, one family at a time. If you can open your home temporarily to a dog or cat - not an unknown stray; rather, someone’s pet - for a limited period of time, you would be helping a family in their worst hour. Many of these families just have nowhere to take their pets while they get themselves back together. With that in mind, please e-mail me if you are able to assist. If you can take someone’s pet, let me know exactly what your requirements are... Dog or cat? Size? Male or female? Friendly with other pets or kids? How long you can foster? If you can’t take in a pet but can help in some other way (maybe transport?), please let me know. And finally, if you have any ideas on how to make this endeavor work and want to help organize it, please let me know. We will take all the help we can get.
From Bulldog Rescue: Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many of our volunteers have been left without power, evacuated from their homes and tending to getting their own affairs in order. We are in great need of foster homes in New Jersey, Long Island and surrounding areas. This means that if you genuinely want to help a Bulldog who has no where else to turn, we will cover all approved medical expenses and will provide a MCM Rottweiler Rescue crate if needed. If you would like to volunteer to foster, please contact: www.mcmrottweilerrescue.petfinder.com Bulldogrescue1@aol.com. ith the post-Hurricane Sandy nor’easter bearing down on Long Island on November 7th, an out-ofstate tree-trimming crew in need of housing found a warm welcome - not to mention comfortable sleeping quarters, hot meals and showers - at Mercy Medical Center. The team from Storm Services, LLC, was brought to Long Island by National Grid to clear trees from power lines to facilitate restoration of electricity knocked out by Sandy. When the two
dozen workers from Texas, Colorado and Florida contacted Mercy about the need for shelter from the gathering nor’easter, they stated, “The hospital just said to come on down and rolled out the red carpet for us.” Mercy’s Environmental Services Department quickly and efficiently set up dormitory space near the hospital’s Emergency Department. It was the second time Mercy’s environmental services team was called to action to set up temporary
shelter during the ongoing weather emergency. In advance of the hurricane, the hospital took in 40 patients evacuated from Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip and 25 patients evacuated from a nursing home in Long Beach. Good Samaritan’s patients were returned to that facility shortly after Sandy passed, but Mercy has continued to provide housing for the nursing home patients more than a week after the storm.
Vet Connect – a webbased initiative to raise awareness about the employment, health, and resource needs of veterans on Long Island, particularly returning veterans – is live today, just in time for Veteran’s Day. This public awareness initiative is the work of the NassauSuffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) and its member hospitals. NSHC is the association that represents these hospitals on a variety of hospital and health care legislative and regulatory issues. The initiative underscores hospitals’ recognition of the extraordinary service veterans have made to this country and hospitals’ commitment to assisting veterans with their
employment and health care needs. Vet Connect is being coordinated by NSHC’s Communications Committee and hospital human resource directors. Vet Connect can be accessed via NSHC’s home page at www.nshc.org. Once users click on the Vet Connect icon, they are brought to interior pages that provide direct links to hospitals’ job banks, military skills translation assistance, and health care career training programs for veterans. The service is also accessible via hospitals’ websites. Look for the Vet Connect logo. “Our hospitals recognize the extraordinary service our veterans have made to our country,” said Kevin Dahill, president/CEO of NSNC. “All of our
hospitals are committed to assisting veterans with their employment and health care needs. Vet Connect is a simple to use, one-stop resource for veterans that puts helpful information at their fingertips.” Phil Moschitta, director of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Northport, says a service like this is needed now more than ever. “It’s so reassuring to have the support of hospitals and health care leaders from across Long Island. Our veterans made great sacrifices to serve our nation and their high ideals to commitment and honor make them exemplary employees,” said Moschitta.

This year, counselors Don Graham and Mark Schwartz, helped implement follow up ideas for the sixth grade Bully Project assembly program provided by the PTA. Committee teachers, Kathleen Terrell and Erica Walerstein, designed a variety of class lesson

The project was initiated and coordinated by teacher Randi Seideman. The bags were donated and distributed by the Waldbaums Supermarket (Mayfair Shopping Center, Commack).

High School Principal Cathy Nolan was honored by the March of Dimes with the Golden Apple Award on November 13th. The Golden Apple Awards were created to recognize and honor outstanding individuals who have made a difference through their commitment to education. And Mrs. Nolan is one committed lady! A true believer in doing for others, Cathy learned “the true meaning of the beauty of selflessness, and that pure joy was a natural result of helping others." She recalls hearing her mother say, on almost a daily basis, “To those much is given, much is expected.” She has a genuine love for what she does on a daily basis. “My blessings are many. I continue to view my life’s work as an educator to be a vocation – a vocation in which I can personally, and through others, affect the minds, hearts, and hands of our students at Commack High School.” Cathy chose to pursue Administration at Dowling College in 2005 in her mission to connect with all children. Cathy thrived on stretching her own mind so that she could enrich the young minds of
her students. From 2005 to 2010, Cathy served CHS’s children as their Assistant Principal and is currently in her third year as Principal – rolemodeling habits of the mind while cultivating habits of the heart for her children. As an administrator who encourages elements of choice and challenge among her students while promoting social and emotional learning, Cathy creates a welcoming educational environment, in which students learn – and thrive – by comfortably taking risks as lifelong learners. Cathy continues to spearhead programmatic initiatives that contribute to Commack’s Culture of Caring. As Commack’s educational leader, Cathy has been honored with ABC’s 2010 “Above and Beyond: Inspiring Students and Teachers,” was a 2009 JETS/Ability One National Engineering Design Challenge Finalist/Winner, and a recipient of the ING Unsung Heroes Award: Real Problems/Real Solutions along with $27,000 which enables her students to continue their research and engineering
efforts to benefit those with special needs within Commack’s local community. CHS continues its vibrant work with March of Dimes as the primary high school on Long Island spearheading a Teen to Teen Program – a pilot program whereby Cathy’s students serve as ambassadors for the March of Dimes. Under Cathy’s effective leadership, US News and World Report’s 2012 Best 100 High Schools in the Nation awarded Commack High School a Gold Medal reflecting her commitment to excellence and the importance of one’s “personal best.” Over the years, Cathy’s professional memberships include: CASA, PTA, SEPTA, Special Olympics, Young Athletes Program, HBC Special Soccer, AHRC, NASSP, ASCD, IAIE, CEC, CTA, and NAPW. Cathy’s special interests are spending time with her family and grandchildren, Katie and Patrick, cooking and baking, watching the Fightin’ Irish and reading professional literature while relaxing at the beach.
gloves. All coats were brought to Long Island Cares in Hauppauge as part of the Warm Coats, Warm Hearts Campaign. As part of the Long Island hurricane relief effort, the Commack School District is also collecting non perishable food, paper towels,
garbage bags, toiletries, diapers and wipes and clean coats and blankets. Those items will first be donated to local food pantries, including Long Island Cares and the American Red Cross. Donations can be dropped off at any of our schools until November 30th.
WARM COATS, WARM HEARTS - PTA Volunteers Stephanie Beck, Stacey Gould, Lisa Rizza and Robyn Chacon and kindergarten students from Mrs. Nichol’s class at North Ridge Primary School.
Don’t Stay Idle Long periods of time spent sitting idly can increase your risk of developing blood clots in
the legs, a potentially fatal condition known as deepvein thrombosis (DVT). Simple and short exercises
while in route may decrease your chances of developing a serious medical complication.
A Message Of Thanks... We would like to take the opportunity to extend a heartfelt thanks to the Commack, Nesconset, Smithtown and St. James Volunteer Fire Departments for housing out of state lineman and tree crews that have worked to put our Town back together. We would also like to thank Kings Park, Hauppauge and Nissequogue for serving as charging stations and general refuge sites for displaced local residents. Super storm Sandy brought damage to our area, unlike any that most of us have ever seen. With homes damaged from fallen trees, roads blocked from shredded wires and poles snapped like tooth picks, our residents struggled to survive against the cold, the snow, and the gas lines. Even as volunteers were tending to their own damaged residences, they stepped up to offer a warm and dry place for residents and lineman to sleep, to wash, and to get a warm meal. More than 200 utility workers have been housed by the Fire Departments, giving these men and women much needed rest after 14 hour work days. Thanks to all of the other first responders, and volunteers who have helped to this point, and continue to assist as people struggle to put their lives back together, especially our seniors. We are blessed in our Town, and take great pride in our resiliency, self-sufficiency, and willingness to assist our fellow Smithtownians in need. Please keep an eye out in this season to assist, and take the time to thank a volunteer when you see them. Sincerely, Legislator Lynne Nowick, Legislator John M. Kennedy

Memorial Dedication
Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco recently helped dedicate a memorial site to honor Henry H. Preston, who served our nation during the Civil War and as Suffolk County’s first salaried Sheriff from 1903 to 1906. DeMarco joined with descendants of Henry Preston, including his
great-great grandson, Arthur Bloom, and other public officials at today’s ceremony. The event was held at Preston Plaza in front of the Shelter Island Police Station. During the ceremony, Sheriff DeMarco remarked on the life of Sheriff Preston: “Like thousands of his fellow soldiers, he was injured during the
Civil War and suffered from pain throughout his life. His service and devotion to his country, in itself, makes him a hero.” The memorial was constructed out of a granite boulder which originated from the site of the former 19th-century Griffing Avenue jail in Riverhead.
Holiday Help

Island Harvest is partnering with Panera Bread to help those hit hard by Hurricane Sandy and Long Islanders who are hungry. With the holidays almost upon us, Panera Bread will serve as a designated drop-off site for Island Harvest’s annual Turkey & Trimmings Collection Campaign, a lifeline for many families in need in the aftermath of Sandy and for hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders who struggle to put food on the table. To lend a helping hand this holiday season, Panera Bread is asking its neighbors to donate frozen turkeys,

supermarket turkey coupons and nonperishable food items at any of its 22 Long Island bakery-cafes on or before December 24th. According to Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest, nearly 300,000 Long Islanders, including 110,000 children struggle with food insecurity. That’s 1 out of every 10 Long Islanders and with the recent devastation those numbers have grown. “Donations of frozen turkeys, turkey coupons and non-perishable food items will be welcomed at our bakery-cafes in Nassau
and Suffolk now through December 24th, and can be dropped off as early as 7 a.m. until 9 p.m.,” says Greg George, Vice President of Operations for Panera Bread on Long Island. “These donations will help Island Harvest provide warm, nutritious meals to local families in need throughout the holidays.” Also, guests who wish to make a monetary contribution to help support Island Harvest’s efforts in the aftermath of Sandy, can do so in amounts of $1 or more at the register.
Sales Tax Relief Recently, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced an emergency sales tax relief program to ease the costs of reconstructing Suffolk County's small businesses.
S u f f o l k I D A . o r g .
