Posing For Peace n the spirit of peace, Mt. Pleasant Elementary School students recently created their 4th Annual Peace Picture. Although the weather was gloomy, the rain held off until after the picture was taken. This is the fourth year the students have taken a Peace Picture, and each one is different. The picture will be displayed with the previous Peace Pictures in the school’s lobby. Pictured are the students posing in formation. Thanks to all who participated.

HOW ABOUT DINNER & A MOVIE?

January 2013 marks the 80th Anniversary of the Long Island Blue Jays Junior Drum Inc., making this corps the second oldest continuous drum and bugle corps in the state of New York. Over the years, they have been helping youth, ages 1019, with advancement in playing brass and percussion instruments in the field of marching music. Some of these members want to learn to play a second instrument, while others are beginners with no musical experience. They are currently recruiting members for the corps. For the small fee of $15 per year, the student will receive lessons, both private and with the group, from the teaching staff, which has a combined experience of over 100 years of drum corps. Also, they provide the instruments so that you can practice at home. If you would like to be a part of this musical tradition on Long Island, you can contact 631.589.5047 for additional information.

Red Ribbon Week

ON & OFF PREMISES CATERING AVAILABLE

MONDAY & TUESDAY

PA S TA N I G H T During the week of October 22nd students at Accompsett Middle School participated in Red Ribbon Week activities that reinforced the importance of positive decision making and the dangers of drugs. The week began with all students attending the Rachael’s Challenge Program. Students created signs with anti-

drug messages that were placed along the school’s driveway, red ribbons were tied on cars, the cafeteria was decorated with red balloons and streamers, anti-drug themed banners were placed at the school entrance, students received anti-drug themed bookmarks, and students read anti-drug Project Wisdom messages each morning. Students also

took a pledge to make good decisions and to remain alcohol, tobacco, and drug free. The numerous activities were developed with the help of the AMS PTA, the AMS Character Education and Wellness Committee, the Community Service Club, Health Teacher Nancy Nolan and entire AMS faculty and staff.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I used to be one of those people who avoided shopping like the plague. And Black Friday shopping? Well, that was an event reserved exclusively for those truly insane individuals hell bent on camping out for some amazing sale or another. Not me. Not ever. And yet… Last year was my first venture into the madness. Considering I hate shopping in general, crowds even more, and don’t even bother to compose a Christmas list until the first week of December – I

would say I handled it pretty well. Great sales, manageable crowds = many purchases for moi. This year, what with the aftermath of the storm and a general lack of festiveness, Christmas shopping was among the last things on my mind. But then I thought – retail therapy…couldn’t hurt, could it? Nothing brings a smile to most peoples’ faces like new “stuff,” whether desperately needed or not. Sure it’s frivolous. Unnecessary even. But who cares? At a certain point, we owe it to ourselves to do whatever it is that brings us pleasure

and takes our mind off the more serious issues at hand. All the problems will still be there come morning, believe me. No sense dwelling on reality. Rather, try your best to turn any negatives into positives whenever possible. Idealistic? Sure. But the holidays are a time for idealism if ever there was one. A time for making wishes and hoping they come true, for starting over and for appreciating everyone and everything just a little bit more... And if shopping helps accomplish even one of these tasks, then so be it. Retail therapy it is!

its adult scouting volunteer leaders by the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Merget is a scouting volunteer, serving as an Assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 343 and as a Unit Commissioner for the Matinecock District. He participated in two weekend-long outdoors sessions in the Wood Badge Course N7-404-111 for the groupparticipation instructional section at held at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. The course was conducted in

September and October of 2011. In order to complete the training, the scouting volunteer leaders had to apply what had been learned in a variety of selfdirected goals (the practical part of the course) within 18 months, which was accomplished in April of 2012. This was the Wood Badge for the 21st Century - a new and updated Wood Badge Course, which was in place since 2001.

Coaches Vs. Cancer

Great Hollow Middle School held their first Coaches Versus Cancer event, in which the athletic department raised funds for the American Cancer Society. With the help of the PTA and many student and adult volunteers, the event raised $1,000. Donations came from

students, teachers, staff and parents. Football, field hockey and boys and girls soccer teams competed on the fields on a soggy afternoon. During the day, students wore pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and stayed after school to watch a game as well. On the playing field, the

boys’ soccer and football teams wore pink socks, while the girls’ soccer and field hockey teams donned pink tee-shirts and ribbons in their hair. Despite the rain, the entire school showed great support and amazing spirit to help make this event successful.

Mercy Medical Center will be celebrating its centennial in 2013, and to mark that occasion the hospital will be producing a commemorative journal and is seeking stories from the community to include in that publication. Mercy is seeking stories from current and former physicians, employees, volunteers, and patients – and their friends and families – chronicling their experiences at the hospital and their feelings about the role it has played in their lives and in the community.

As the CEO and CoFounder of the Treatment Research Institute (TRI), Community Champion Dr. McLellan has a long history of leadership in the field of substance abuse, and his research has shaped policy on each level of the public sphere. From 2009 to 2010, Dr. McLellan was the Science Advisor and Deputy Director of the

238920N1128

Zucker Hillside Hospital; and Media Champion Ronald J. Scaglia of Anton Community Newspapers. LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds described the event, “It's important that we take the time to honor those who are championing recovery and take some time to celebrate our victories as we gear up for the challenges that lie ahead. LICADD's five decades of rich history was on display yesterday, as was our resolve for a strong and active future.” Across Long Island, families are dealing with the devastating effects of untreated addiction. Their painful stories create the momentum needed to push lifesaving legislation through our local and state governments. Media Champion Mr. Scaglia is the Editor of Special Sections for Anton Community Newspapers, and his coverage of the drug crisis on Long Island has helped raise awareness, especially among parents of teens who are at risk for substance abuse.

Nesaquake Middle School students pledged to take a stand against substance abuse and do their part to create a drugfree America during Red Ribbon Week, October 23rd to 26th. Activities to promote drug awareness were held throughout the week, giving Nesaquake students the opportunity to make a commitment to a drug-free lifestyle. During lunch periods students signed a banner to pledge to be drug-free. Science teacher, Mrs. Vitalo, stayed after school with those who wanted to “Plant The Promise” so they could plant red flower bulbs as a reminder to shun drugs. The week’s

events ended with Wear Red Day. To spread the drug-free message in the community, pupils were encouraged to join with family and friends in decorating their mailboxes, doors, fences, etc. with this year’s Red Ribbon Week theme: The Best ME Is Drug Free. Students then could take a picture of their creation and enter it in the National Red Ribbon Photo Contest for a chance to win an iPad. The National Family Partnership organized the first Nationwide Red Ribbon Campaign in 1988, in memory of DEA agent and former U.S. Marine, Enrique Camarena. In

1985, while investigating a Mexican drug cartel that was running drugs into the U.S., he was tortured and then murdered. In honor of his memory, his friends and neighbors began to wear red ribbons to symbolize his commitment in the battle against illegal drugs. Since then, the mission of Red Ribbon Week has been to encourage communities across America to broadcast a message of intolerance to drugs with the goal of creating a drug-free America. Nesaquake Middle School was proud to be part of this year’s event.

Social Realism

PIONEER AWARD - Verizon Telecom Pioneers Paumanok Chapter #85 presented Mr. John Stallone, a Verizon Manager, with the Pioneer of the Year Award at the General Assembly on October 26th in Bethpage. Mr Stallone was recognized for his outstanding volunteer work at The Telephone Pioneer Museum, located in Commack. The Pioneers are an international organization of volunteers providing dedicated services to those in need and currently have over 9500 members on Long Island. Photo by: Jim Rapp

Twenty-one students from Smithtown High School East recently participated in an art exhibit entitled Social Realism 2012. This was part of the broader Expressions of Democracy theme that explored American history and culture through historical performances, drama, fine arts and dance. The event was held at Hofstra University, and coincided with the 2012 Presidential debate. Students were provided with the opportunity to

express issues that they face in society through the arts. Some of the issues explored by students included: poverty, war, justice, violence, legalization of immigrants, effects of media on body image, drugs, and access to American opportunity. The objective was for students to understand how the arts have not only depicted the world and defined and framed issues throughout history, but how the arts can and have changed the course of

history. Student art work was on display for a ceremony which was held on Monday, October 15th and for the Presidential debate which occurred on Tuesday, October 16th. Student artists, their families, and Long Island High School art teachers were invited to attend the ceremony. Dianne Shanian, art teacher at Smithtown High School East represented Smithtown School District.

Let The Debate Begin Students from Smithtown High School West’s AP Government classes and Political Awareness Club participated in a debate prior to the Presidential election. They debated questions relevant to the Presidential race. (Should taxes be raised or lowered? Should “Obamacare” be

repealed? Should Congress pass gun-control legislation? Should the federal government bailout big businesses like banks and car companies?) Supporters of President Obama argued in favor of the President’s policies and supporters of Mitt Romney argued against the President’s policies

and in favor of Romney’s proposals. The students prepared for weeks, meeting with their teacher Mr. Gatto after school a number of times. Students from many different classes throughout the day watched the debate with great interest.

Marrow Drive A Success

More than 800 Stony Brook University students, faculty and other individuals participated in a Bone Marrow Registry Drive on November 14th to help those with leukemia or lymphoma who are in need a bone marrow transplant to beat their disease. The drive was organized by four Stony Brook University Students, who partnered with DKMS Americas, the world’s largest marrow donor center. The successful drive had been organized by students Derek Cope,

Maggie Knight, Samuel Rosner, and Peter Sheh. They developed a campuswide effort for the drive that included numerous locations for individuals to join the registry – the Student Activities Center and Campus Recreation Center on the University’ main campus; and Stony Brook University Hospital, the Cancer Center, and Health Sciences tower on the Stony Brook Medicine campus. Each day 7,500 people are searching for a match on the National Bone Marrow Registry. Six out

of 10 patients in need of a bone marrow transplant never find a match. Conducting a bone marrow registry drive increases the pool of potential matches nationwide. A simple “swab” on the inside of one’s cheek is the first step to becoming a match for a patient in need of a bone marrow transplant. A total of 841 individuals – a majority of them Stony Brook University students – were swabbed during the drive.

Pilot Program

For More Information Call: 631-226-2636 - www.theneighbornewspapers.com

Good Samaritan Hospital enacted a pilot program this past summer to identify all current and former members of the United States Armed Services who present in its Emergency Department in need of medical care.

Between 70 and 90 veterans each week are identified and provided information about the health care benefits to which they may be entitled. The hospital is advocating for state legislation mandating that

all hospitals and clinics ask a patient’s military status and that health care providers be trained on available resources to assist veterans with their health care needs.

PILOT PROGRAM - Pictured: Chairman of Veterans Service Organization for Town of Islip Frank Ciulla, Commandant of Suffolk County Detachment Leo Maese, Jim McCann, United States Marine Corps, Good Samaritan Vice President of Human Resources Mark Boehrer, Town of Islip Councilman John Cochrane, Jr., Dawn Esposito, RN, Past President NYS AMVETS Post 18 Frank DeMarco and AMVETS Post 18 John Gaeta.

Breast Cancer Benefit

Members of The New York Natural Equestrians raised $7,650 for the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program at their 4th Annual Breast Cancer Benefit Ride held at Connequot River State Park in Bohemia, Long Island. The event organizer, Lisa Llinnares Wolf of Islip Terrace says she started the event to honor her best friend who has had breast cancer. She says, “I do it because like her, many more women will be

diagnosed and need care, services, support and assistance, and I want to make sure that Adelphi is able to continue offering those things to those that need it most. I do it because my grandmother died of breast cancer, just like so many other grandmothers, mothers, sisters, daughters and friends.” Established in 2000, The New York Natural Equestrians are dedicated to using and promoting Natural Horsemanship training methods to foster

safe, enjoyable and respectful relationships between horse and human, enabling riders to ride whenever they want, wherever they want, with whomever they want, at any gait they want…safely. Mercy Ball Support The Friends of Mercy Medical Center will donate a portion of the proceeds from the 76th Annual Mercy Ball to benefit local Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. The December 1st event at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City begins the hospital’s 2013 Centennial Celebration. “As we support the hospital as it begins its second century, we feel it is equally important to support the community’s recovery from the catastrophic impact of the storm and its aftermath,” said Friends of Mercy president Christopher Kearns of Rockville Centre. “And all are welcome to join us in that effort by attending or supporting the event.” The chairman for the event this year is threedecade Rockville Centre resident Tom Alexanderson, who is well-

known for his leadership in community activities. Three major awards will be presented: •John F. Coghlan of Rockville Centre, retired from a distinguished career in investment banking and a founder of the Dorothy Rodbell Cohen Foundation for Sarcoma Research, will receive the Bishop John R. McGann Lifetime Achievement Award, which is presented to a distinguished individual dedicated to volunteering time and effort in support of the Friends of Mercy. •Marc DiSciullo, MD of Muttontown, the outgoing president of the Mercy Medical Staff, will receive the Theodore Roosevelt Award for Outstanding Service. The award is presented by the NassauSuffolk Hospital Council to an individual contributing to the development of Long

Island’s community hospitals in the spirit of the renowned former president and Long Island resident’s lifelong devotion to public service. •Nancy Carr of Merrick, long-time executive assistant to Mercy’s Chief Administrative Officers and Board of Trustees liaison, will receive the Sister Mary Nadine Casey, CIJ Award that honors a member of the Mercy family who best personifies the values of Mercy Medical Center and the Congregation of the Infant Jesus whose members founded the hospital.
