Best Biscuit Bake-Off t. Pleasant Elementary School fourth graders recently participated in their 10th Annual Biscuit and Bread Bake-Off to help celebrate reading the book, Justin And The Best Biscuits In The World! Students were invited to enter their own home-baked biscuits, muffins or bread in the bake-off. The children then judged the baked goods, and ribbons were awarded to the top choices. Pictured are some of the participants tasting their treats.

trigger for renewed or increased use of alcohol or drugs to deal with fear, anxiety, sadness and/or anger. “Our societal norms and the media messages often support the notion that alcohol or other mood altering substances are just the thing to soothe
those negative feelings,” said Kathleen Riddle, president of Outreach, the noted drug and alcohol treatment program. “We see it quite differently. With the holidays approaching, now is a good time to take proactive measures.” “Increased use or

alcohol or drugs almost always makes the situation worse, and does nothing to address the underlying problems. Worse, those under the influence have little ability to deal with the events around them, making it more difficult to balance daily needs like working and caring for children while also attempting to find shelter, get the heat back or apply for assistance,” said Riddle. Substance abuse professionals advise the following: · If you are in recovery, use your support system. Seek out supportive friends or find a professional counselor with whom you can talk out your experience as soon as possible. · Go over the experience in detail. Discuss what you felt while the events were happening. · Make a plan to avoid situations in which alcohol or drugs will be present or offered.
Attending self help meetings, church services and social/leisure activities are all good alternatives. · The parks and other recreational areas are open again after being closed immediately after the storm. Exercise (such as walking and jogging) is a great way to reduce stress and spend time in a healthy way. Yoga, meditation and other relaxation activities can be extremely helpful in times of stress and trauma. · If you are already in a substance abuse program, you may not have had access to the program because of the storm. Most programs are back in operation and you should prioritize making arrangements to see your counselor. Call and see how they might be able to assist you, especially if you have ongoing disruption or displacement in your life. · Seek professional help if your emotions and/or substance use become

overwhelming. Posttraumatic stress is normal after disasters and tragic events, such as Sandy. There is no shame in seeking help in these circumstances. · Volunteer or contribute to the relief efforts. Those who suffered loss in the storm may well find comfort in helping others. Many counselors in programs are able to give back in this way, even if they themselves suffered trauma in the storm. For those fighting addiction during this post-Sandy recovery time, Outreach has offices in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island with programs for teenagers and adults, including some specialized programs for women and women with children. Many programs are multilingual. If you or someone you know needs help, please call Outreach at 718.847.9233 or visit www.opiny.org.

As a result of my daily commute having been recently increased from 15 minutes to anywhere from 45 minutes (on a good day) to… oh, let’s say an hour plus on a normal morning during rush hour, I have had the overwhelming privilege to observe the shenanigans of one of our favorites: the fellow motorist. And here I thought residential, stop-and-go driving was bad. To be clear, there is a certain nuance to the pleasure of trailing behind a line of school buses, to the point that you manage to hit every single stop sign and traffic light within a five-mile stretch. And let’s not forget the classic inching forward while reading street signs – oh wait, I wanted to turn three blocks back…let’s just throw the car in reverse, why don’t we.
But that’s nothing compared to highway and parkway driving. Head out to the open roads, and it’s a whole new ballgame. There are those who feel the need to merge at speeds approaching 70 miles per hour, all the while paying no attention to the speed you may be approaching at. Make way, because they’re coming regardless! Then there are the people who seem to have an aversion to using that shoulder portion leading up to an exit ramp, instead preferring to come to a screeching halt right in their lane – your lane – as they contemplate whether this is really where they need to get off. Umm… drive much? Oh, but let’s not forget my favorite – those who make a habit of driving at night with their brights on, blinding all those in front of them with

their hi-beam glow. Are you afraid of the dark? Is that the issue? Are the dozens of streetlights and headlights from your fellow motorists simply not enough to guide the way? Perhaps nighttime driving is not for you. We all do stupid things from time to time. Whether from distraction or a momentary lapse in judgement, these things happen. But when you are operating a piece of machinery capable of taking another human life, perhaps we should do our best to keep these idiotic idiosyncrasies to a minimum. Pay attention, put the phone away, save your makeup application, shaving and hairstyling for another time… oh, and when the sign says “Lane Ends,” believe it. Sincerely, Your Fellow Driver

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, hosted its Annual Stars Gala & Casino Night on Friday, November 16th at the Woodbury Country Club. DDI not only raised funds for the children and adults it serves, but for its employees as well. In light of recent events with Hurricane Sandy, DDI established a special relief fund to benefit any employee who lost their home or are facing extreme economic hardship due to storm. “DDI is very grateful to our Foundation Board of Directors, corporations, parents, teachers, staff, friends and volunteers who helped make this event a special and memorable evening,” stated John Lessard, DDI Executive Director. I am especially grateful that a portion of the proceeds from this event will be
designated to the DDI Employee Disaster Relief Fund, which has been established to help a number of our staff members who faced catastrophic losses due to Hurricane Sandy. Their homes were significantly damaged or destroyed, their cars were ruined, and their lives were turned upside down. Yet, despite the adversity, each and every one of our staff members collectively insured that all of the children and adults with disabilities entrusted to our care were kept safe and out of harm's way. We are very grateful for their dedication and hope to be able to offer any assistance that we can.” The annual Gala featured two special award presentations. The 2012 Stars Advocacy Award was presented to Julian Fisher of Gallagher Benefit Services. Over the past decade, Julian, along with his wife, June, has worked tirelessly to raise funds in
support of the many programs and services DDI provides to children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. DDI was also pleased to honor students who have been active participants in the school age vocational services in the Children’s Day Program. For three or more years, these students have participated in community based volunteer activities, which are meant to help the students prepare for future employment opportunities, increased socialization experiences, and the ability to lead productive and satisfying lives in adulthood. DDI was proud to honor these students, as well as the Transition/Vocational Coordinator, Doris Frisenda, who has worked tirelessly for over 17 years to provide this opportunity for the students enrolled in DDI’s Children’s Day Program.

Research shows that metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) tumors are capable of producing their own androgen, which can help fuel their survival.. This information could help in managing your mCRPC. The more you know about the disease, the better equipped you are to discuss it with your doctor.

Winner Announced
As a proud sponsor of Z100’s Jingle Ball, Huntington Learning Center announces their Overcome Adversity Contest winner. Casey Esbin of New City, NY was recently announced as the VIP winner of the contest. As the winner, Casey will be receiving from Huntington and Z100 an 8-pack of Meet & Greets with an artist at the Z100 and Coca-Cola All Access Lounge Pre-Show event, an Artist Sound Check experience for eight people and an 8-pack of VIP seats to Z100’s Jingle Ball concert on Friday,
December 7th, 2012 at Madison Square Garden. As her contest entry, Casey described how she overcame adversity in her math class. She had struggled in math since 7th grade, but didn’t want to accept her grades and refused to continue her “C” average. With the help of her tutors, she increased her grades. Now that she is in 11th grade, she succeeded at taking math a year above her grade level due to her rapid progression. Huntington Learning Center is also sponsoring Z100 and Coca-Cola’s All
Access Lounge Pre-show Event on Friday, December 7th. The actionpacked event will be held at the Hammerstein Ballroom from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Visitors to Huntington’s booth will have a final chance to win sold-out seats to Z100’s Jingle Ball that night.

Historical Visit
St. James Elementary fourth graders in Mrs. Hennessy’s class had a visit from The Smithtown Historical Society. The students learned about colonial life here in Smithtown using many
hands-on activities. They had the opportunity to spin wool on a spinning wheel. They also learned how to make candles using the dipping method. The students wrote on parchment paper
with quill pens and walnut ink. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn about the lives of children from our area during colonial times.

Food Drive
Students at Accompsett Middle School collected over 1,000 pounds of nonperishable food in the past week to help those impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Organized by the
National Junior Honor Society and Community Service Club, students, faculty, staff, and parents demonstrated generosity to help those less fortunate during this holiday season.
The food was donated to the Smithtown food pantry and will be distributed to families in our Smithtown community.
awaken them when they have nightmares. America’s VetDog is part of the Guide Dog Foundation. Sue Semple and Hugh Reilly, representatives from America’s VetDog Association, attended the clubs’ meeting in November, and educated the club members about how valuable these dogs are to the returning vets. They also brought along two dogs: Major Timmy, a yellow Labrador Retriever, who has served two tours of duty in Afghanistan, offering the soldiers unconditional love when they returned to the barracks after a mission, and Tobay, a black Labrador Retriever, who is currently going through puppy training to make a difference in the life of a veteran.
Hugh and Sue told many poignant stories about the service dogs, and Hugh stated, “Not only does a vet dog provide assistance with daily activities, but the dog provides the motivation to conquer new challenges. People focus on the dog, not the disability. With a vet dog by his or her side, a veteran is not alone.” Club members were surprised to hear of the many activities and lifesaving chores that these dogs perform to assist their veteran with daily living activities. The members are eager to volunteer to help at the Guide Dog Foundation when they are 16 years of age, as the Foundation is always looking for help with these loving animals.
On Sunday, December 2nd, St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center hosted their annual Resident/Family Christmas Celebration. This family oriented event included a variety of e n t e r t a i n m e n t throughout the facility as well as a delicious brunch buffet and desserts.
Santa was on hand to visit the children and adults as well. In honor of Veterans Day, student members of Commack High School’s Cause Four Paws Club and the Literacy Club presented a check for $1,000.00 to the America’s VetDogs Association. The money was raised through fundraisers and pizza sales that will be used towards the cost of training a service dog to assist a returning veteran. The cost for training a helper dog is $50,000. These service dogs help the veterans deal with such things as Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, as well as a number of other physical and emotional challenges that they face when they return home. These special dogs are trained to turn on light switches, warn a vet of a seizure that is about to happen and

Holiday Card Creations
Two classes at Sawmill Intermediate School in Commack created holiday cards for sick children in local hospitals. Commack alumni, Courtney Galiano teamed up with other celebrities from Keep It Kind’s Merry Day Note Project to create and collect hundreds of holiday cards that the celebrities will distribute
to pediatric units across the United States. She will be delivering the cards locally to Huntington Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital. Courtney is a former student of Caren Macholz, whose current fifth grade class was joined by Mrs. Jennifer Murphy’s third grade class to create the cards filled with sweet
holiday wishes for their peers. Courtney, who starred in So You Think You Can Dance, became part of this project hoping that the cards made by the students in our local community would put a smile on the faces of those children in need.

Athletes Helping Athletes
Smithtown High School East recently hosted the Athletes Helping Athletes Leadership Conference. They were honored to have two former professional athletes train Smithtown East & West Rookie Leaders. This program is able to survive in the district because of the sponsorship from the Smithtown Booster Club.
The following gentlemen were here from Athletes Helping Athletes: Tim Bassett: A graduate of the University of Georgia. Tim played in the NBA with the New York/New Jersey Nets where he contributed to two World Championships. He went on to play for the San Antonio Spurs and then went to Italy where he
Runners To Raise Funds At 5 a.m. on Saturday, December 15, local residents Dan Turturro (St. James) and Byron Lane (Stony Brook) will start their day as many cannot imagine. They plan to run for 12 hours straight - and reach a combined total of 125 miles - running side by side on treadmills at Energy Interactive Fitness Center on Route 25A in St. James. Their goal: to raise funds and awareness for Friends of Karen, a tristate non-profit organization that helps children and their families cope with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. While most people even seasoned marathoners - could not conceive of running for more than one hour on a “dreadmill,” the pair are looking forward to the challenge. “Think of the way your life is going right now.” Lane offers. “Pretend that tomorrow, you found out that your 5 or 10 or 15 year old child was diagnosed with some terrible life-threatening disease. Your life would change drastically and forever. Friends of Karen picks up the slack so that families in this situation don’t have to worry about the Rat Race—all of the little things that can drain precious time and energy—so they can focus solely on their child and their family. Running on treadmills symbolizes their race to try to get
everything done all at once. During our fundraiser, we’ll do all the running around for you, just like Friends of Karen does for their sponsored families.” At the end of the run, scheduled for 5 p.m., the gentlemen will celebrate their accomplishment by sitting down. They will also be serving food and drinks to supporters and donors and will be drawing the winning raffle tickets for prizes generously donated to the cause from local merchants and from the owners of Energy Interactive Fitness. Lane, one of the most decorated ultrarunners in the country, started his running career 37 years ago. Sponsored by The Runners' Edge (Farmingdale) and Hammer Nutrition, he has won 47 ultramarathon races of 50 km or longer, is a three-time Age Group National Champion, and, in 2008, was the National Champion in the 24-hour run. Turturro started running longer than marathon distances this past year, having done a 31-miler and a 50-miler, and regularly runs five times per week. This will be Dan’s longest run ever. The two men met at Energy Interactive Fitness last year and Byron has served as a very encouraging mentor to Dan. The two brainstormed a
fundraising idea to bring some attention to a deserving charity and were directed to Friends of Karen by Energy Fitness manager Michael Fox. “We are pleased to be able to help support this important organization,” said 55 year-old Turturro. “No one is prepared for a life-threatening illness to strike their child,” added Lane. “People going through this type of family crisis have enough to worry about. Friends of Karen provides the support that lets parents focus on what's most important: their child.” Friends of Karen provides emotional, financial and advocacy support to families with a child diagnosed with cancer or another lifethreatening illness. Since 1978, Friends of Karen has helped more than 11,800 children in the New York Tri-State region. With compassion, dedication and expertise, Friends of Karen helps sustain the entire family during an overwhelmingly frightening time. To make a donation to Friends of Karen, or for more information, please v i s i t : www.friendsofkaren.org . For more information about the run, contact Dan at coby11@optonline.net or Byron at enduro.runner@gmail.co m.

Free Vaccines Available Catholic Health Services (CHS), in collaboration with Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Nassau County Health Commissioner Lawrence Eisenstein, MD, provided free tetanus and flu vaccines recently to emergency responders as well as to residents in
hurricane ravaged Island Park. Catholic Health Services free community outreach program, Healthy Sundays, supported by nursing staff from member hospitals St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center, Mercy Medical Center and Good Samaritan Hospital
Medical Center, administered the injections to ensure the safety and protection of individuals who continue to work in areas hardest hit by the storm. Dozens of CHS employees, many of whom were impacted by the hurricane themselves, volunteered their time and skill to provide the

tetanus and flu vaccines. “In the wake of the devastation following Hurricane Sandy, we remained focused on ensuring the health and wellness of individuals in the communities impacted by this storm,” said Joel Yohai, MD, Executive Vice President, Medical Affairs, Chief Medical Officer, CHS. “Catholic Health Services couldn’t be more proud to collaborate with County Executive Mangano and
Dr. Eisenstein in delivering critically important tetanus immunizations to Island Park emergency responders. As they continue to work to restore these neighborhoods, they can do so knowing they are protected against this serious bacterial infection.” “Protecting the health and safety of our emergency responders is a priority,” said County
Executive Mangano. “This partnership with Catholic Health Services assured that our emergency responders who are performing cleanup work as result of super storm Sandy receive the necessary protection.” Additional information on tetanus is available on the New York State Department of Health w e b s i t e : http://www.health.ny.gov/ diseases/communicable/te tanus/fact_sheet.htm

Community Outreach
On Saturday, November 10th, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center held its 2012 Hospital Ball at the East Wind Inn and Spa in Wading River. This annual event is the pinnacle of our fund raising efforts, and raised almost $600,000 for the Medical Center. This year we had the distinct honor of recognizing Dr. Edward J. Kormylo with the Dr. Jacob Dranitzke Award. This award is presented annually to an individual who demonstrates involvement, support, and commitment to his profession, the Medical
Center, and the community. Dr. Kormylo has been a dedicated and innovative member of our Medical Center for almost 20 years, and is currently the Medical Co-Director of the Hospital’s Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine. The Corporate Service Award was presented to Prudential Retirement, the administrator of our retirement fund. Prudential is dedicated to their role as a caring corporate citizen, and to the trust placed in them by the Medical Center. In recognition of the profound effect the recent storms had on our
Good Samaritan Hospital recently hosted a Healthy Sunday program at St. John of God parish in Central Islip. Healthy Sundays is a community outreach program sponsored by Catholic Health Services to promote health and wellness through
educational information and health screenings for the underserved. Volunteer staff administered flu vaccines and provided cholesterol/glucose screenings to more than 100 participants. In addition, through the generous donations of Al’s
Angels, 50 families received bins of food for Thanksgiving. Al’s Angels mission is providing moments of joy and comfort to families that are challenged by childhood cancer and financial hardship.
employees, Brookhaven also announced the establishment of an Employee Relief Fund to assist those in need now and in the future. The appeal raised almost $10,000 that evening and our efforts to raise funds for this purpose will continue. All funds raised will help fund the construction of new cardiology and operating suites and the programs and services associated with them. Brookhaven Memorial Hospital has received a Challenge Grant that will match the net proceeds of COMMUNITY OUTREACH - Good Samaritan Human Resources Coordinator Teena Marie Camacho, Catholic Home Care’s Susana Garcia and Catholic Home Care this event.
