The program teaches them about winter holidays and traditions in different countries. It also showed the children similarities of cultures throughout the world. Children “traveled” with their passports and suitcases each day, visiting a different country and doing activities. A great time was had by all.

MONDAY & TUESDAY The Diocese of Rockville Centre's Catholic Committee on Scouting in conjugation with Christ the King RC Church hosted a Peace Light Distribution Service on Sunday, December 9th, during the 7 p.m. Advent Lessons and Carols. The service presider was Reverend Joseph Davanzo. Approximately 300 people attended the service including scouts and Scouters from Nassau and Suffolk County in addition to the several hundred parishioners of Christ the King R.C. Church Parish.
After receiving the Peace Light, many participants brought the Light back to their own House of Worship including Our Lady of Mount Carmel RC Church, Patchogue; St. Patrick’s RC Church, Huntington; Commack United Methodist Church, Commack; and Resurrection Byzantine Catholic Church, Smithtown The tradition of the Peace Light started in Austria in the late 1980's. The "Peace Light" campaign was originally organized by the Austrian
Broadcasting Co. and is still part of a great charitable mission for handicapped children and people in need. Each year, a child from Upper Austria fetches the light - a live flame- from the Grotto of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. The light is then transported to Vienna, Austria under the auspices of the International Scouting Movement and distributed throughout Europe. In recent years it has also been brought to Continued on Page 6

County. After the event, the dancers all met back at the studio to drop off their costumes and reflect on the performance. All of the dancers spoke unanimously about how good it felt to use their talents to make a difference, the satisfaction they felt from giving back, and the joy of meeting all of the amazing children cared for by Make-A-Wish! Dance Connection was founded in 1989 on Sunrise Hwy. in East Islip. Since then, the company has grown to a 5,000 sqft stateof-the-art facility on Freeman Ave. in Islip. Dance Connection prides itself on it’s essential philosophy; to create a welcoming setting for proper dance education, concentrating on stage presentation, dancer body health and correct technique, while offering bountiful student services and opportunities to enrich their dance experience and cultivate them as great people, as well as great dancers.

work on a piece and immediately put together a group of dancers and team of teachers, including Jenn D’Auria, Donna Iaboni, and Christina Perez. The Make-A-Wish holiday party took place at Villa Lombardi’s in Holkbrook. The children were very excited to see the dancers perform and seemed to enjoy the mini-show with much enthusiasm. The kids were eager to meet and take pictures with the Dance Connection dancers after they performed. The Make-A-Wish administrators at the Suffolk County chapter were extremely appreciative. “I received so many compliments on you all from our staff, volunteers and families! They all were truly impressed, thank you for taking your time to share your talents with the many special families at Make-AWish Foundation of Suffolk County. We hope to have you back next year! said Melissa Wilko, Director of Operations at Make-A-Wish Foundation of Suffolk

“Once in a lifetime performance opportunities come around quite often for the competition team dancers at Dance Connection. By the end of this season, some will have danced in four countries, nine U.S. states, in Disney World, and aboard international cruise ships. However, this holiday season, they received a unique and very humbling performance invitation. On Saturday, December 15th, Dance Connection dancers performed at the annual Make-A-Wish holiday party. The Make-AWish Foundation grants the wishes of children with lifethreatening medical conditions. Their annual holiday party hosted many of the children and families who are cared for by MakeA-Wish. This past October, a representative from the Suffolk County chapter of Make-A-Wish contacted Dance Connection asking if they could put together a special holiday piece for the party. Artistic Director Mary Naftal was happy to

Little by little, things are beginning to get back on track. There are small signs throughout the neighborhood – a few lights on here and there, the glimmer of a Christmas tree through the window, the sound of Christmas songs filtering from the windows of passing cars‌ Tis’ the time of the season, as out of sorts as many of us may feel this particular holiday season. Life goes on, as we have seen. From storms and floods and uncontrollable acts of nature, to horrific tragedies from across the globe to our neighbors in Newtown, CT, as much as it seems that things
will never return to normal, somehow, they manage to progress to the point of at least being tolerable. The new normal, I suppose you could say, where we learn to make do while making adjustments on the fly. What is “normal anyway? Personally, never before have I looked forward to a new year with quite the same level of anticipation. Sure, it’s just a flip of the calendar; but psychologically, there’s nothing quite like saying “good riddance to a collection of not-so-great circumstances. And so, we look forward. Onward and upward, as they say. There’s nothing like good old-fashioned progress, snail’s-pace as it may be, to
refresh the spirit. For those displaced by Storm Sandy, the phrase “home for the holidaysâ€? doesn’t quite apply. But still, just being surrounded by those you love brings a certain degree of comfort that even the most dramatic upheaval can’t displace. Hopefully, within the next few months, the process of rebuilding what was lost will be further along the way to completion, and we can all settle back into our “normalâ€? routines – only this time with a greater appreciation for what we have, mainly those things that cannot be replaced. Happy New Year to all‌ see you on the flip side.

the United States. The aim of the Peace Light is to bring people the light and the Peace Message, which encourages everyone, especially Scouts, to actively create peace in their own environment and communities During the weeks before Christmas, Scouts distribute the light to now more than 30 European countries. In recent years it has also been brought to the United States through the generosity of Austrian Airlines, and the cooperation of the Brooklyn Catholic Committee on Scouting and the Greater New York Council. This year it is being shared throughout the United States and Canada, and is even being brought to South America. In past years the Peace Light has been presented to Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, Mikhail Gorbachev, King Hussein of Jordan, members of the European parliament in Strasbourg,

Candy Canes For A Cause
Three philanthropic Nesaquake Middle School students Erika Nemeth, Taylor Key and Samantha Mattei decided to make the holidays a little brighter for a local family this year. Amanda Dinningan was only eight years old when
she was tragically injured in a car accident in 2007. She requires a ventilator and constant nursing care. These young girls wanted to help defray some of the medical costs that the family has incurred. Erika, Taylor, and Samantha will be selling
candy canes for the price of $1 each at all winter concerts this month. It is nice to know that this family is not forgotten and the action of three caring individuals can make the world a better place.

IS YOUR BUSINESS READY FOR 2013? LET US HELP YOU GET OFF TO A

Students in Chef Mike Frankson’s Introduction to Cooking class at the Islip Career Center (ICC) in Oakdale spent the last two weeks baking hundreds of cookies. The delectable creations include linzer tarts, biscotti, sugar, chocolate crinkles, chocolate chip, peanut butter, ginger snaps, oatmeal raison, and almond cookies.
Baking the cookies was just the first step. The second step was to instruct the students how to create cookie trays. The criterion for each cookie tray was that it weighed two pounds, that the cookies were stacked and visibly appealing, and that the tray was secured properly with cellphone and ribbon. The most rewarding
aspect of this project was that the cookie trays were being gifted to less fortunate students and their families at the Islip Career Center. Each student in Chef Frankson’s class was permitted to make a cookie tray to bring home to their family to enjoy. Happy Holidays!

AWARD HONOREES - The NYS AHPERD (New York State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance) recently awarded HS West students Elizabeth Sullivan and Kyle O’Rourke and HS East students Mackenzie Buckley and Jack Dillman as the Zone Award winners at their annual dinner. The recipients were selected based on their outstanding physical education achievement, overall GPA, character and leadership.
HOLIDAY GIVING TREE - The Dogwood Elementary Student Leadership Club is hard at work. Leadership Club Members were busy making hands to hang in their school’s Holiday Giving Tree. Throughout the coming weeks, Dogwood families will get the opportunity to select a “hand” and purchase a special gift for a family in need.
GIFT DRIVE - During this holiday season, faculty, staff, students and families of Accompsett Middle School contributed to a gift drive for those less fortunate in our Smithtown community. The gift drive corresponded with the December character education theme of “generosity.”
