Memorial Scholarship The Stony Brook University School of Journalism received a $50,000 gift from Elaine Crosson and her son Daniel, to establish The Matthew T. Crosson Memorial Scholarship In Journalism which will endow a scholarship to support young journalists who wish to carry on the pursuit of public affairs journalism and advance public discourse for which the late Matt Crosson was so well known. A portion of the funding comes from donations from family and friends, and the full $50,000 will be matched by a special grant to Stony Brook University by Jim and Marilyn Simons and the Simons Foundation, resulting in an impact of $100,000. The endowment will continue to be funded with additional donations from the community. Matt Crosson, the beloved and highly-touted
former President of the Long Island Association, a title he held for 16 years, died unexpectedly on December 23rd, 2010 from complications following a stroke. He resigned from the LIA earlier that year and accepted a job as the Chief Executive Officer of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce. Following his death, Elaine and Dan, who is now 14, moved back to their home on Long Island after Elaine accepted a position at Stony Brook University as Vice President for External Relations. “It has been two years since Matt passed away and Daniel and I still miss him so much, as does the rest of his family, and so many others who knew and loved him,” said Elaine Crosson, JD, Crosson’s wife of 17 years. “Dan and I wanted to make this gift now to commemorate Matt’s
legacy as a great advocate for public dialogue, and to provide others an opportunity to honor his memory. “Matt was an attorney not a journalist by trade, yet his appreciation for the written word and his belief in responsible journalism was fierce, so in addition to his primary role of advancing economic development for Long Island, it was his personal mission to bring to fore the most pressing current affairs issues facing this community and all of New York by engaging some of the most relevant public figures and luminaries in our country in a personal dialogue right here in our own back yard. “The Matthew T. Crosson Memorial Scholarship endowment is meant to foster that mission, to keep the vision alive by supporting journalists in training at
Stony Brook who will carry on the pursuit of public discourse that Matt so cherished.” The Crosson scholarship will be available to a qualifying full-time junior or senior enrolled in the School of Journalism at Stony Brook University, where Jim Klurfeld, Crosson’s friend and longtime cohost of the public affairs program “Cutting Edge,” is a professor. The recipient must demonstrate a desire to pursue a career in journalism with a demonstrated interest in public affairs. The recipient will also have the opportunity to intern at Newsday or at News 12 Long Island and Newsday.com or a special rotating internship at all three news outlets. One recipient per year beginning in the Fall 2013 Continued on Page 5

The Bay Shore Beautification Society hosted its 13th annual Light The Night event on Sunday, December 16th. Bay Shore neighbors and friends joined together in a spirit of community and charity as they illuminated the streets of Bay Shore and Brightwaters with over 30,000 luminaries and raised funds to help keep Bay Shore beautiful.

Lighting The Night
Two days into 2013… so how is your year going? Have you given up on those promising New Year’s resolutions yet? Has your self-proclaimed “fresh start” gone by the wayside already? Two days in, and you’re wishing for 2014? Funny as it sounds, this is precisely the mentality many have when it comes to their failed attempts to remake their lives. One and done, so to speak, which is silly when you consider there are 365
days in a year, with countless opportunities for derailment during each and every one of them. Odds are, complications will arise at some point. Sure, there are days when frustrations are bound to get the better of us. Weeks even. But what is life if not a journey laid out before us, with twists and turns along the way? Some choose to stay the course, while others prefer the road less traveled – it all depends upon our respective mentalities, which, as we all well know, can change moment to
moment. The New Year is just another one of those days, for better or worse. It is what you choose to make of it, to a point. Only certain things are within our control; other aspects need be left up to fate. After all, what’s that they say about “the best laid plans”? Exactly. Don’t bother making them. So maintain that sense of optimism. Don’t despair quite yet. There are precisely 363 more days left to get it right. Good luck. And Happy New Year :)
academic year will be chosen by a selected committee appointed by School of Journalism School Dean, Howard Schneider. “This scholarship will be invaluable in supporting
students, year-after-year, whose passion will be to pursue reporting in the public interest,” said Schneider. “I can think of nothing more important.” “This is not only a wonderful development for our program but

wholly appropriate that it should be in Matt Crosson’s name,” said Klurfeld. “Whether he was a prosecutor, running the New York State Court system, heading the LIA or hosting a regular public affairs television show, Matt's goal was always to find the truth. That, of course, is also the goal of journalism.”

Master Class Some of Bay Shore High School’s most promising singers participated in a Master Class conducted by visiting opera singer Michael Riley. The class, one of the many cultural programs sponsored by the Bay Shore Schools Arts Education Fund (BSSAEF) this year, was attended by choir students as well as any student who did NYSSMA earlier this May or has plans to do NYSSMA next year. Said BSSAEF Chairperson Susan Barbash, “Bay Shore has always had a strong Performing Arts program, but this year there just seems to be an explosion of vocal talent. These are young students who are just beginning to develop their voices. We want to encourage them to pursue their interest in music and voice.
Visiting artist Michael Riley is an opera and concert bass-baritone who has performed more than 150 roles over the course of a career that spans more than 40 years. He also enjoys working with young singers. Riley and his wife Cathy Barbash, a graduate of Bay Shore High School, divide their time between Philadelphia and New York City. Riley explained, “It is important for young singers to acquire a good set of musical skills, especially sight reading and the basics of music theory. Piano study or learning to play an instrument can also be very helpful for singers. I get singing jobs frequently because I am a good sight reader. High School Music teacher and Director Chris Bilella said, “I was
impressed that most of the students recognized that Michael Riley, Bill Daugherty and Deborah Tranelli (the latter two are teachers from the January/February Master Class) spoke about the same vocal techniques. This continuity between the two Master Classes helped stress the importance of good, healthy singing for the young vocalists. Students who took the class enjoyed Riley's visit and benefitted from his valuable instruction about vocal techniques. “I thought the Master Class was really fun and it helped me to improve my breath support, voice placement and Spanish diction. I would love to do it again, said Bay Shore High School Sophomore Remy DeJoseph, who scored a 96 on NYSSMA Level 6.

welcoming place to share stories, participate in learning activities and read comfortably throughout their literacy block. Another Fifth Avenue teacher, Mrs. Sharon Hinnant, submitted three projects to DonorsChoose and all were funded: Little Listeners in Need of Listening Center Materials, Little Learners in Need of Organization, and Alphabet Carpet. Mrs. Hinnant expressed her gratitude for the high quality stories/books on CD now available in the classroom’s listening center, the storage bins that are helping students learn to efficiently store and organize materials and supplies, and the huge, brightly colored alphabet carpet that enhances her students’ reading/community area. Ms. Suzzivalli, a teacher at Fifth Avenue School, has had four projects funded through DonorsChoose.org: Essential Supplies for Young Reader and Writers, Creating a Cozy Reading Space for Eager Readers, Need for NonFiction and Essentials for Organization in the Classroom. Like Mrs. Hinnant, Ms. Suzzivalli
has since posted more project requests, hoping to receive even more donations from this wonderful organization. At Gardiner Manor, one of Mr. Modderno’s requests, “I Can Be a Better Me from What I Read”, was also fully funded. His students received books about selfesteem that were used in the remedial reading program to enrich understanding about bullying and self-respect. In all, 23 Bay Shore Schools faculty members have received donations t h r o u g h DonorsChoose.org project requests, including 14 at Fifth Avenue School alone. Many Bay Shore teachers have current DonorsChoose.org campaigns on line. To support their efforts, please visit DonorsChoose.org, click on projects, enter Bay Shore as a location and begin supporting Bay Shore teachers and students in their campaigns. Below is a complete list of teachers with successful Donors Choose campaigns. Congratulations to each and every one of them.

Over two nights of stirring sounds, the musicians of East Islip Middle School showcased their growing skills and proved the vigor of a vaunted music program that has carefully nurtured their budding talents. These December 10th and 11th winter concerts were filled with variety and nods to the holiday season, bringing joy to the proud parents and community members in attendance. In their first performance as middle school students, the members of the sixthgrade orchestra played an exciting and ambitious program to begin the first night’s concert. With Jackie Collins as director, they tackled John Caponegro’s “Hanukkah Holiday,” Richard Meyer’s “Bach Country Fiddles” and Soon Hee Newbold’s epic “Medieval Kings.” “The students were able to experience the American style of fiddle playing while also performing classical literature,” said Collins. “They should be extremely proud of all the progress they have made since September.” The East Islip Middle School Girls Chorus was up next, directed by Patricia Bryan and accompanied by pianist Jeremy Barbaro. After “Joyful, Joyful” rang out, featuring soloist Sarah Bloom, the singers offered “a Hebrew song of hope,” Nurit Hirsch and Ehud

The December 10th show concluded with the sixth-grade band and its director Christopher Robertson vigorously performing holiday favorites like “Frosty the Snowman,” “That Holiday Season,” “Hanukkah Dance” and “Feliz Navidad.” Directed by Judith A. Fischer, the East Islip Middle School Orchestra kicked off the second night’s concert. From “Holiday Hoedown” (arranged by Mark Williams) to two sparkling classical pieces – the finale of Handel’s Concerto Grosso No. 2 and Gustav Holst’s March from Suite No. 1 – the seventh- and eighth-grade musicians offered a diverse program with regard to musical forms and styles. “Each of the pieces presented a unique educational experience while allowing
my students to have fun performing,” remarked Fischer. The school’s concert band, under director Concetta Stevens, provided an expansive program, leading off with the Jerry Williams novelty tune “Deck the Halls with Old Composers,” which mixes bits of a variety of classic themes into “Deck the Halls.” The players then launched into the pulsating “Halo Theme” (arranged by Robert Sheldon from the popular science-fiction video game “Halo”) before closing with “Themes from Walt Disney’s Fantasia.” Ending this pair of winter concerts, Bryan and the East Islip Middle School Concert Choir awed the audience with a beautifully sung version of Linda Spevacek’s “Madrigal of the Bells,” featuring soloists Vinny Altman, Brittney Berke, Kendra Lee Canavan, Paul DeMasi, Erin Fitzgerald and Jenna Norrby. After delivering traditional Jewish folk song “Hine Ma Tov” and Robert Thygerson’s “Sing Gloria,” they closed the night with the “Glee” arrangement of Bill Withers’ inspirational ’70s pop classic “Lean on Me,” showcasing soloists Amanda Baranek, Amanda Carey and Peter Scavone. CLASS PROJECT - Bay Shore South Country Schools Mrs. Cristando’s third grade class eagerly continued the annual Cause For Paws Dog Toy Drive this year! They collected over 400 dog toys, treats, and supplies that will be donated to the local animal shelter. This project developed as an outgrowth of the concept of giving to others in need. Students also enjoyed reading many stories about our canine friends and learned how to appreciate the interaction between people and dogs. The students opened their hearts and minds to the spirit of giving and spreading good cheer. The supplies were donated to the Town of Islip Animal Shelter.
Visit With Santa
Santa was in the house at East Islip High School on December 7th as teacher Kelly Schwender’s child development classes hosted the second annual Evening with Santa event. Over 60 high school students volunteered their time to spend an evening with younger children from Pre-K through third grade, working with the youngsters on games, face painting and temporary tattoos, and arts and crafts. Participating East Islip
families were greeted at the door by the high school students, receiving “Santa’s Workshop” laminated sticker charts. The stickers helped the young children collect rewards for participating in hands-on holiday games – including bingo, bowling, snowball tossing and pin the nose on Rudolph – that the high schoolers had created and organized during Schwender’s classes. Her volunteers also baked holiday refreshments that
were served to all the guests and assisted the children in visiting three arts and crafts centers (ornaments, holiday frames and gingerbread). Santa made a special appearance, naturally. “These students worked very hard,” said Israel Malinowitzer, the high school’s guidance director. “Congratulations to Mrs. Schwender for a wonderful kickoff to the holiday season!”
levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent weapons in the fight
against heart disease. That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills more women
than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
