teachers have certainly found this to be the case.

At Bay Shore High School, Mr. Claiborne requested and received three tape measures and three packs of timers for his “Walk This Way” Physics lab, which requires students to mark

out a course of travel, record times at which travelers cross designated locations, collect and graph their results and calculate the slope of the line to find velocity. At Bay Shore Middle School, Mrs. Payne-Yarborough’s Newspaper Club received

a camera, laptop and printer, all of which were used to enhance the school newspaper and successfully capture and reflect heartfelt and/ or “magical” moments from around their school community.

At Fifth Avenue School, Mrs. Shelley’s students received a colorful, cozy carpet they now use as a welcoming place to share stories, participate in learning activities and read comfortably throughout their literacy block.

Another Fifth Avenue teacher, Mrs. Sharon Hinnant, submitted three projects to DonorsChoose and all were funded: Little Listeners in Need of Listening Center Materials, Little Learners in Need of Organization, and Alphabet Carpet. Mrs. Hinnant expressed her gratitude for the high quality stories/books on CD now available in the

classroom’s listening center, the storage bins that are helping students learn to efficiently store and organize materials and supplies, and the huge, brightly colored alphabet carpet that enhances her students’ reading/community area.

Ms. Suzzivalli, a teacher at Fifth Avenue School, has had four projects funded through DonorsChoose. org: Essential Supplies for Young Reader and Writers, Creating a Cozy Reading Space for Eager Readers, Need for NonFiction and Essentials for Organization in the Classroom. Like Mrs. Hinnant, Ms. Suzzivalli has since posted more project requests, hoping to receive even more donations from this wonderful organization.

At Gardiner Manor, one of Mr. Modderno’s requests, “I Can Be a Better Me from What I Read”,

was also fully funded. His students received books about self-esteem that were used in the remedial reading program to enrich understanding about bullying and self-respect.

In all, 23 Bay Shore Schools faculty members have received donations through DonorsChoose. org project requests, including 14 at Fifth Avenue School alone. Many Bay Shore teachers have current DonorsChoose. org campaigns on line.

Karate Kids Do BETTER In School GET BACK IN THE BEST SHAPE EVER FOR 2013

The 5th Annual Top Chef Day event – actually held over two days, December 17th and 18th – at East Islip Middle School brought cooking methods and traditions to life for students in home and career skills teacher Rena Costello’s classroom.

During the event, faculty members visit the class to demonstrate the cooking of their favorite dishes, while

the students are given an opportunity to ask each “chef� questions about the recipes and other foodrelated topics. The various recipes are later published in a Cooking In Room 104 cookbook for the students to take home.

Practical Opportunity For the past three years, students in teacher Art Pagano’s Facilities Maintenance program at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Islip Career Center (ICC) have had the opportunity to participate in on-the-job training at Papa John’s Pizza in Medford. This program offers students practical experience that can lead to entry-level skills in maintenance occupations.

Mr. Pagano said, “We travel to Papa John’s once a week and spend about an hour performing janitorial duties. It’s valuable experience for the students to learn how to clean per industry standard. The students work as a team.” This experience is an unpaid type of “internship” as Papa John’s Pizza owner Amarpaz Singh rewards the students with free pizza. He said, “The students work very hard and make the store very clean. The teacher is on top of things and directs his students.” It’s clear from the certificates of appreciation, thank you letters, and framed photos on the walls of his establishment that Mr. Singh is very community oriented. Mr. Pagano said, “We appreciate being permitted the opportunity to come every week and clean the whole store.” Students also provide janitorial services every week at

Influenza in New York State (NYS) has been widespread for the past two months and is significantly more prevalent at this time of year as compared to the past several years. To date, there have been more than 19,000 laboratory-confirmed cases reported since seasonal influenza testing began in October 2012, compared to 4,400 cases during all of the 2011-2012 influenza season. Currently, there have been 2,884 laboratory confirmed hospitalizations associated with influenza. There are 2 reported pediatric influenza-related deaths on LI. In light of the widespread influenza activity across NYS and most of the nation, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) continues to strongly advise all New Yorkers who have not already received their influenza vaccine to do so immediately.

Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu?

A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated.

• Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage.

• Stay away from people who are sick.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

• If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area.

• Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by

wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label).

Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of withholding vaccines?

A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable.

Get Vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2012-2013 season vaccine is available in your area.

If you do contract the flu, talk to your doctor about antivirals. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that can be used for prevention or treatment of flu viruses. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster.

Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them.

• Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose.

• Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself.

• Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death, especially in the very young or old, pregnant women or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

Q: Who should get the flu vaccine?

A: Beginning this year with the 2012-2013 influenza season, the CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine each year. The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each year.

Q: What types of vaccinations are available?

A: The two types of flu vaccines are: • The “flu shot”: an inactivated vaccine which contains killed virus that is given by injection. It is approved for use in people 6 months of age and older, including healthy people, people with chronic medical conditions and pregnant women.

• The nasal spray flu vaccine: a vaccine made with live, but weakened, flu virus that cannot cause the flu in a healthy person. This is approved for use in healthy people 2-49 years old (not pregnant).

Q: What are the Side Effects of the two vaccine types?

A: Different side effects can be associated with the flu shot and nasal vaccine.

The flu shot: You cannot get the flu from a flu shot. Some minor side effects that could occur are: soreness, redness, or swelling at the site of injection, low-grade fever, muscle aches. If they are going to occur at all, they begin soon after the vaccination and usually last 1 to 2 days. Almost all people who receive influenza vaccine have no problems from it.

Flipping The Switch By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There comes a time when you just have to tune things out. That point when all the chaos surrounding you simply needs to be shut off and pushed aside. The moment when all the pointless discourse and frantic commotion dissolves into simple background noise.

Peace and quiet…and clarity.

We all strive for this. And often, we would not find it so difficult to achieve – if not for the distraction of others.

Ah, but to live a solitary life devoid of all nuisance…what kind of existence would that be? And so we must learn to tolerate, to adjust, to find that happy medium between blatant rudeness and healthy…

distance, shall we say.

This is not to say we should be uninvolved in life; but sometimes, that fine line between being involved and being overtaken by nonsense is far too important to overlook.

We should only become caught up in those things which are healthy and beneficial to us in the long run. Leave the rest behind.

The problem is that, while, philosophically, this theory makes perfect sense, putting it into practice is far easier said than done when faced with reality. Anyone who deals with people on a daily basis, whether complete strangers or those near and dear, can surely attest to this fact. Love them or hate them, we are destined to clash with others more often than

not. It’s simple human nature.

The trick is to save these so-called “battles” for the important issues. And while, in the heat of the moment, each and every issue may seem equally dire, rest assured, they are not. Take a step back, take a deep breath, and heed the following: “Frame every so-called disaster with these words: In five years, will this matter?”

In most cases, the answer will be a clear and unequivocal “no.” So move on. Let it go.

Forgive and forget. Don’t allow yourself to get hung up on the small stuff.

In five years’ time, it won’t matter. Focus on today – and finding that elusive peace within yourself.

The students were honored by having their work displayed in a formal gallery setting in the Captree Commons Building at the college’s Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood. “The variety of work was impressive,” said Nelson. “Works displayed in the exhibition included drawings, photography, collage, sculpture, ceramics and painting.”

Nelson, Taylor and eight of the East Islip student-artists attended a December 13th reception

and awards presentation hosted by Suffolk County Community College’s art faculty, accompanied by their family and friends.

“This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to share their artistic expressions,” said Nelson. “Our art department congratulates these talented young artists for their dedication and pursuit of artistic expression in entering this competition, and we look forward to seeing their continued efforts in the visual arts.”

Bus Service Introduced Stony Brook University Cancer Center has initiated a free transportation service for cancer patients to and from their homes throughout Suffolk County in an effort to provide access to care for patients who need chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and have limited resources to get to the Cancer Center.

The Non-Emergency Transportation (NET) program began in November and operates Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Recommendations for the service come from Cancer Center social workers; already more than 25 transports have been made. To qualify for the service, patients complete an application signed by their medical provider.

“This is a unique hospital-based program,” Bily said. “Obtaining and refurbishing the bus was a true community partnership in every sense of the word.”

Stalking Awareness Month January is National Stalking Awareness Month, and Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco wants to bring more awareness to this crime that affects approximately 6.6 million victims each year.

Stalking is a complex crime characterized by a course of conduct directed at a specific person that would cause that person fear. Stalking may take many forms, such as assaults, threats, vandalism, burglary, or animal abuse, as well as unwanted cards, calls, gifts, or visits. Stalkers will also use technology,

such as computers, global positioning system devices, or hidden cameras, to track a victim’s daily activities.

Sheriff DeMarco advises individuals who are victimized by stalking behavior to keep accurate records of their perpetrator’s actions and to seek help from law enforcement and the courts. “Always call 911 if you are in any immediate danger, and trust your instincts.

Begin to collect any emails, phone messages, notes and any other evidence when you feel uncomfortable in your interactions with another

individual,” he said.

“Information collected over the course of time can be very helpful to law enforcement and if you need to seek a court order of protection,” DeMarco added.

Victims of stalking and domestic violence often suffer from constant anxiety and fear about their safety. Sheriff DeMarco offers information about applying for an order of protection, and the Sheriff’s Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification program (SAVIN-NY) on his website at www.suffolksheriff.com.

BLUE JEANS FOR RED CROSS - Applebee’s Long Island restaurants were drenched in denim from December 3rd-9th to help raise money for the American Red Cross and its efforts to assist the victims of Hurricane Sandy. The weeklong Blue Jeans for Red Cross program encouraged workers to wear jeans to work each day for a $1 donation to the ARC. In total, Applebee’s staff contributed $4,300 to the cause.

The large meeting room at the Suffolk Cooperative Library System (SLS) was full with school librarians from across the county who had questions about teaching the new standards.

Guest speaker and author Dr. Marc Aronson, hosted by the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Library System (SLS), was there to discuss the implementation of the new Common Core State Standards. “The evolution of K-12 education is upon us,” he said, “and

school librarians are the foundation in creating a common core community.”

The new education standards in English/ language arts and mathematics, adopted by 45 states including New York, will prepare students for life after 12th grade.

These standards have taken Dr. Aronson down a path of guiding librarians to be, he said, “…in this new world that promotes culling and curating from every source to give young

people opportunities to be in the debate as new ideas come forward. How we change education, librarianship, print and digital books, apps, is important. We need to immerse young people not in receiving knowledge, but in the pursuit of knowledge,” he explained.

“Thinking is endorphins for the brain.”

His presentation was titled Common Core, Uncommon Challenge.

Nursing Award Winner

John T. Mather Memorial Hospital Nurse Kerry O’Sullivan has been awarded the Julie Cangro Award for 2012 by the Suffolk County Emergency Nurses Association. The award is given annually to an Emergency Department RN from a Suffolk County hospital who exhibits the criteria of leadership, integrity, nurturer, dedication, creativity and magnanimity.

O’Sullivan, RN, TNCC, ENPC, a Mather Hospital ED nurse for eight years, also received Mather’s 2012 RN Community Service Award.

“I’m honored to be given this award,” said O’Sullivan, a nurse preceptor who is mentoring the first Emergency Department nursing graduate who was accepted into Mather’s Internship Program.

She also is active with Blanca’s House, a nonprofit organization of volunteer healthcare professionals who donate their time to provide free, invaluable medical treatment to children and their families who would otherwise have no access to modern health care.

O’Sullivan has participated in several missions to

Central America and this summer hosted an underprivileged child from Ecuador who needed surgery for a cleft palate.

The child and her mother stayed at O’Sullivan’s home for six months, during which time O’Sullivan cared for the child.

O’Sullivan is the second Mather Emergency Department nurse to receive the award in the three years it has been given. Liz Devine, RN, Mather’s Emergency Department Nursing Manager, was the first recipient of the award. The Suffolk County Emergency Nurses Association represents 12 hospitals in Suffolk County, with more than 300 members.

ADOPT-A-FAMILY - The Business and Accounting Club at the Ammerman Campus of Suffolk County Community College recently held a 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament as a fundraiser. More than 15 teams and 60 students competed to raise money to help two local families in need through the Adopt-a-Family program. The students augmented their monetary donation with additional gifs purchased on their own for the families.

Orchestra Openings

The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York is inviting high-schoolaged orchestral and vocal musicians to audition for the group’s July 2013 concert tour of Central Europe. The touring MYO Orchestra and Chorus will visit and perform through Germany, Austria and Switzerland. An optional, additional week of touring will be in France.

The ensembles have embarked on several international tours over the past years with

concert visits to Central and Eastern Europe, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, China, Spain, Italy, Greece and, last year, to Australia and New Zealand. Celebrate The New Year In NY Residents of New York can ring in the New Year with 10 free flowering trees by joining the Arbor Day Foundation any time during January 2013.

By becoming a part of the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation, new members will receive two white flowering dogwoods, two flowering crabapples, two Washington hawthorns, two American rosebuds and two goldenraintrees.

“These beautiful trees will give your home in New York lovely flowers with pink, yellow and white colors,” said John

East Islip High School junior Abigail Dell’Orto recently submitted an essay to the National Center of Suburban Studies at Hofstra University/ Eastern Suffolk BOCES as

part of its Celebration of Suburban Diversity 2012 Essay Scholarship Contest, sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union.

Although Dell’Orto did not win the competition, which focused on Long Island’s diversity and sustainability, the Hofstra review committee was impressed with her writing and rewarded her with a $200 donation for East Islip, to be used by the high school to promote a diversity- or sustainabilityrelated project.

“Abigail willingly

wrote the essay about sustainability because she is concerned about the future ability of people her age to maintain the quality of life that her parents have on Long Island,” said teacher Teresa Avila.

“Because Abigail is a selfdirected learner who seeks to help others, she wanted to offer a suggestion and a possible solution to the problem.”

Leadership Award Winner

Sophomore Megan Ludwig was recently selected as East Islip High School’s winner of the prestigious Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Award, and will attend this year’s HOBY New York Metro Leadership Seminar, a three-day conference held at Adelphi University in Garden City on June 8th10th.

Founded by civicminded actor Hugh O’Brian in 1958, HOBY’s mission is to inspire a global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation.

HOBY programs such as the seminar at Adelphi provide selected students with unique leadership training and motivationbuilding experiences.

For East Islip’s contest, sponsored by the local Lions Club, Ludwig composed a short essay about being a leader.

The East Islip School District’s winter concert series concluded with two triumphant nights of music from East Islip High School’s outstanding studentmusicians, cementing the school’s reputation as a hotbed of serious music instruction and engaging performances.

After Principal William Brennen and East Islip Music Director Stephen Guarino provided introductory comments, the first night show on December 17th opened with a strong performance from the school’s concert choir, directed by Bethany Affelt and accompanied by pianist Christopher McKee and percussionists Jack Newman and Vincent Sheppard.

The 1945 wintry classic “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” by Jule Styne was followed by Nigerian folk song “Mojuba” and David Eddleman’s “Bidi Bom.” A vocal duet by Jonathan Coffin and Alyssa Stephens on “Finale B” from “Rent” was enhanced by Joseph Janover’s guitar skills.

The East Islip High School Women’s Choir was next, also directed by Affelt and accompanied

by McKee, Newman and Sheppard. A featured group of Krista Cook, Danielle Pafundi, Faith Penny, Samantha Sampollo and Sara Schaber were

showcased on opening number “Three African Folk Songs.” After singing Dan Forrest’s “Psalm 8 (Adonai, Adonenu),” the women’s choir were joined by the school’s select orchestra for a joint performance of “Believe” from “The Polar Express.”

Under the direction of Alyssa Sciarrino, the school’s string orchestra offered fine renditions of “Silent Night,” Lennie Niehaus’ “Celtic Overture” and James Pierpont’s “Dueling Jingle Strings.”

Closing out the first night of the series, the wind ensemble and director Christopher Neske delivered a potent version of Gustav Holst’s Second Suite in F, followed by Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride.”

On December 18th, the second night of the concert series, the East Islip High School Honors Symphony Orchestra took the stage with director Susan Rydzeski for an imaginative program including Antonio Vivaldi’s “Allegro” from Concerto for Two Solo Violins and String Orchestra, music from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera” and J.S. Pierpont’s “Tintinnabulations.” Violin soloists Elaina Lorefice and Jessica Willdigg impressed the audience with their instrumental mastery.

Next up was the

school’s honors choir, directed by Affelt and again accompanied on percussion by Newman and Sheppard. Beginning the program with the Christmas hymn “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming,” the singers then continued with Mozart’s “Turkish March for Voices” and “Chanukah Variations.”

“Lux Aurumque,” a modern Christmasthemed composition

by Eric Whitacre, was particularly impressive, as was the honors choir’s closing number, “O Sifuni Mungu,” sung in Swahili and featuring soloists Janover, Courtney Kenyon and Tanner Schaper.

The final performance of the evening – and of the district’s winter concert series as a whole – came from the East Islip High School Concert Band, led by director Neske. Robert Jager’s “Esprit de Corps” set the tone, followed

by Chip Davis’ “Fanfare/ Hark! the Herald Angels Sing,” casting familiar holiday pieces in the style of Mannheim Steamroller.

After a rendition of the traditional “Auld Lang Syne,” the band ended the night with Alfred Reed’s “Gallop” from his 1976 First Suite for Band.

Small Hands Work Wonders

Following the devastation left in the wake of Superstorm Sandy and the horrific tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., the students and staff at Islip’s Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School dug deep into their hearts and their pockets.

Throughout the month of December, students donated their spare change, raising $875 as part of the school’s Caring Coins collection. The proceeds were donated to the American Red Cross, directly helping those affected by the hurricane.

Heeding a call from the

Connecticut PTSA, the students spent several days creating “snowflakes” for Sandy Hook. With the understanding that no two snowflakes are alike, the student-made decorations will be sent to Sandy Hook to create a winter wonderland for the students and staff.

MENORAH LIGHTING - Treasurer Carpenter was honored to be present at the Sinai Reform Temple Menorah Lighting, along with other members of the community to help celebrate the Hanukkah holiday. The Rabbi led the attendees in some traditional holiday songs and all present enjoyed the traditional donuts and potato latkes. Sinai Reform Temple has a proud history in the Bay Shore community, and will be celebrating their 65th Anniversary in 2013.

Holiday Singalong

Less than an hour before school was dismissed and the holiday vacation began, the halls of Connetquot Elementary were filled with song and excitement as students, staff and PTA parents joined together as one chorus in joyous holiday spirit.

In typical fashion, music teacher Eileen Egbert made a grand entrance into the main office with her piano and PA system.

December 21st singalong was a talented entourage of fifth-grade students who led the school in seasonal favorites, including Jingle Bells, Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and We Wish You A Merry Christmas.

Students read from their songbooks in loud and lovely voices. The elation was heightened when a gentleman in a red suit, a “jolly old soul,” entered the school for a visit,

accompanied by his “elves,” PTA moms who brought gifts for every child.

“It was a lovely moment in Connetquot that reminded everyone about the power of music to bring our community together,” said Principal Deborah Smith.

When the students at Islip Middle School heard of the destruction to the Island Park School District, they decided to take action.

In an effort organized by school social worker Shari Pennington, the Islip students “adopted” Island Park’s Lincoln Orens engage in activities that Middle School. Through support the building of various fundraisers and the Islip friendships and academic donations, relationships that enhance a student’s middle school experience.

students collected funds that were used to purchase gift cards, games and school supplies. Students in John Wenzel’s technology class went the extra mile and built an Adirondack chair, which was raffled off to help raise funds.

On December 14th, Ms. Pennington and Islip Middle School Assistant Principal Chad Walerstein delivered the goods to the Island Park school.

“They were so grateful for everything we brought for them,” said Ms.

Pennington. “They lost so much in the storm and were quite overwhelmed with the generosity shown by our students and school.”

In addition to the gifts, the packages included letters and poems of encouragement from Steve Taff’s English classes and artwork designed by Laura Vogelsberg’s art students. According to Ms. Pennington, the Island Park school displayed the notes and artwork in their front lobby.

Healthier Families On Tuesday, December 18th, the final meeting of the ten-week Healthier Families Program took place at the Bay Shore High School Middle School.

The Healthier Family Program is a joint initiative between the Bay Shore School District Physical Education Department and

Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center.

The goal of the program is to educate and encourage parents/ guardians and students on the importance of healthy lifestyle choices.

Bay Shore Middle School recently received a $2,000 grant for their Mentor and Mentee (M&M) Program.

CVS awarded the grant as a way of supporting important community outreach programs. The grant money will be used to purchase art supplies and planting materials for craft and gardening activities, respectively.
