Suffolk County’s improved relationship with the State has also provided Suffolk County residents with one of the most successful State agendas to date. From day one, County Executive Bellone’s priority has been to grow Suffolk County’s economy. “Young people are leaving the Long Island region at record rates, said County Executive Bellone. “We have a lack of quality affordable housing, a lack of high paying jobs, and high volume of traffic on our roadways. The only way to combat these problems is to create sustainable longterm economic growth. Bellone highlighted Connect Long Island as the answer to creating sustainable growth in Suffolk County. County Executive Steve Bellone discussed his efforts to create local jobs and improve government efficiency when he addressed more than 800 business representatives and elected officials at the Long Island Association’s annual State of the Counties Report Breakfast. Bellone and Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano served as the key presenters at the event. Bellone highlighted the positive relationship which has developed with the Suffolk County legislature and the executive branch of government, a relationship that was nonexistent over the past several years. This improved relationship has led to government working for the residents of Suffolk County in a unified manner and focused on actually solving problems including reducing the size of county government by more than 700 positions since Bellone took office.

Racing To The Finish By: Jamie Lynn Ryan No matter how much of a “head start” I get on the week, I always feel completely overwhelmed by the time Friday comes around. Is it just me? Do I subconsciously slow down the pace as the week progresses, forcing everything to pile up at the end? Or does the list of “To Do” items continuously outweigh the “Done” section, as seven more tasks are added for every two accomplished? So it would seem. And all this without taking a day off. Imagine if, by some sheer loss of judgement, I actually tried to cram everything into four days,

rather than five. What would happen then? Not that the weekends are particularly restful and relaxing either, mind you. No, they pretty much consist of two days of nonstop running around, back and forth across the Island, in a fruitless effort to mix chores, errands and maybe a touch of recreation thrown in for good measure (read: mental health). When did my schedule become so insane? Seems like it was not so long ago that I had quite a bit more free time on my hands, even days when I was somewhat bored. Imagine that. Sort of makes you wish for the days back in elementary school when you

would make it about three days into summer vacation before whining that there was “nothing” to do. Ah, to be that young and innocent again. Nowadays, most people work overtime leading up to and following a “vacation,” only to have it interspersed by checking e-mails, voicemails and “touching base” to make sure everything is running smoothly in their absence. I can’t remember the last time I spent even a handful of days completely cut off from the rest of the world. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Sounds like a plan, in fact. Once I catch up on the week. If I ever do :)

Bubba: #12-812 - male Boxer/American Bulldog mix.

Bradley: sweet, shy male. Some vision empairment; looking for “forever home.” Louie: male orange Tabby kitten, 7 months old. At Last Hope satellite adoption center in Petsmart in Huntington Station.

Misty: #2-499 - female black declawed cat. Has untraceable microchip.

ATTENTION LOCAL SHELTERS! Pretinha: playful, exhuberant female. Loves toys! Would prefer an adult-only home.

“How do you go red?” asks the American Heart Association. On Friday, February 1st, people from across Long Island, as well as corporations, businesses, hospitals, towns, schools, local and state legislators, members of the media, teachers, and people from all walks of life will be wearing red to focus attention on - and raise funds to fight - the No. 1 killer of women – cardiovascular disease. On February 1st, the American Heart Association’s 10th Annual National Wear Red Day asks women to show their support for the fight against heart disease in women by wearing red. It’s an easy, powerful way to speak up and show support for Go Red For Women®, the American Heart Association’s solution to save women’s lives. The Go Red For Women movement, sponsored nationally by Macys and Merck urges women to take charge of their cardiovascular health, make it a top priority and live a stronger, longer

life. The North ShoreLong Island Jewish Health System is the Cities Go Red Sponsor for the movement. Every minute in the United States, someone’s wife, mother, daughter or sister dies from heart disease, stroke or other form of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women age 25 and older and stroke is the No. 4 killer of women, as women account for 61 percent of all stroke deaths annually. The American Heart Association Go Red For Women movement is about turning around these statistics. It’s also about resources, information and hope. Donations to Go Red For Women help support our efforts to educate women and to fund breakthrough research by the American Heart Association that helps ensure women are represented in clinical studies. Since 2004, through its fundraising efforts, Go Red For Women has contributed almost $44 million to women-

focused research and has provided additional funds to life-saving educational programs and tools for physicians. On February 1st, or on a different day if you wish, you and your colleagues are encouraged to wear red (and dress down if your company allows) and each donate $5 or more. As a thank you for their support, each participant will receive a Go Red For Women® red dress pin or sticker to wear, along with information about how to make healthy choices every day. As a Wear Red Day Coordinator, you’ll receive a Coordinator’s Tool Kit with all the materials needed to conduct a successful Wear Red Day event – including a Coordinator’s Guide, educational materials, posters, and ideas to make your event successful and fun. For more information about National Wear Red Day and to sign up your company or organization, call Jessica DiMeo at 516.450.9111 or email Jessica.dimeo@heart.org.

Each year, Catholic Health Services (CHS) seeks nominations from its staff for the system’s Emmy, the Patrick J. Scollard Award for Leadership. This year’s winner of CHS’s highest honor is Deborah Kohn, RN, BS, CCRN, a clinical nurse educator at CHS’s St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center, where she has been on staff for more than 30 years. Chosen from among colleagues across CHS, she was recognized at the system’s ninth annual leadership conference, held at the DeMatteis Center in Greenvale. “Deborah is the personification of our mission statement, which says, in part, ‘serves the common good.’ This she does inside and outside this ministry. CHS is truly blessed to have so fervid a leader as part of ‘Christ’s healing mission’ here on Long Island,” said CHS President and Chief Executive Officer Richard J.J. Sullivan, Jr. Kohn, a Manorville resident who also has been honored with the Excellent Preceptor Award from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, has contributed significantly to St. Catherine’s innovative simulation training program and collaborated with critical care educators at CHS’s St. Charles Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center to provide the most advanced

continuing education to nursing staff. She serves her community by chairing the local Junior Firefighters Explorers, training teens in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first aid and firefighting skills, in addition to guiding community service projects such as blood drives, snow removal from fire hydrants and other programs. Kohn participates in local automatic external defibrillator (AED) education and health fairs, as well. One of the two leading finalists for the Patrick J. Scollard Award is Sue Palo, director of rehabilitative and community services for CHS’s St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center®. Palo has been instrumental in the hospital’s successful community outreach programs, including the deployment of its mobile health unit and St. Francis’s participation in CHS’s Healthy Sundays, a network of free health screenings and other services reaching medically underserved residents across Long Island. The East Northport resident also acts as liaison for the hospital’s longstanding partnership with the Gift of Life program, which has provided more than 100 lifesaving surgeries for children all over the world. The other leading finalist for this notable honor is Michael Sauter, MD, chief medical officer at St. Charles Hospital, another

CHS hospital. Dr. Sauter has led the effort to raise stroke awareness among at-risk populations in surrounding communities, offering free lectures and blood pressure screenings, as well as providing seminars on stroke treatment to emergency medical services personnel. He has helped the hospital achieve NYS Stroke Center designation and The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ certification of St. Charles as a stroke center, along with expanding programs to continue stroke care beyond discharge. As the hospital’s chief medical officer, Sauter, who lives in Port Jefferson, continues to promote the highest standards of care for patients and the community.

Adopt-A-Family

Students in the East Islip High School Medical and Health Technology Career Academy, popularly known as “CAM,” recently participated for the first time in the “Adopt-aFamily” program of North Shore-LIJ’s Southside Hospital. Aided by East Islip science teacher Lisa Neri and Career Academy director Israel Malinowitzer, the CAM students met with Southside human resource administrator Marge Miller at the school’s library on

Dec. 21. They presented Miller with gifts of a bicycle and karaoke machine for the program’s adopted family. For the past 35 years, North Shore-LIJ has implemented the Adopt-aFamily program, with the health system’s employees annually selecting and “adopting” hundreds of needy families in the community. “The Medical Academy students did a great job collecting money from their fellow students,” said

to remind students that to succeed in life, they don’t have to be world-class athletes, just world-class people. By sharing his own personal trials and triumphs, Davis connected with the attending students and delivered a resounding message: “With big effort, focus on education and the excellence you already possess, you can be champions in your own life.” He also noted that bullies have no place in schools and encouraged the children to recognize that every student has value and deserves respect, and that no one should use social bullying as a way of tearing others down. Said teacher Dawn Ann Zeffiro, “During the conference, the students enjoyed listening to

Mr. Davis and other motivational speakers and performers instill the mission of Our Kids in Action, to help young people become healthy, respectful, responsible, caring citizens with good judgment and integrity – the necessary attributes for tomorrow’s workforce and community leaders.” As part of the conference, students were encouraged to submit a voluntary essay of 500 words or less on one of four topics. East Islip Middle School student Victoria Keenan received a certificate of achievement for her superlative entry, which echoed Davis’ antibullying messages. Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax

New Director Named

After reviewing over 80 applications and interviewing sixteen highly qualified candidates, the Board of Directors of the Art League of Long Island has chosen Charlee Miller to be its new Executive Director. Board Chairman Fred Avril notes that “Charlee Miller’s experience in both the

business and not-for-profit worlds, plus her abiding belief in the power of art to enrich lives, make her ideally suited to lead the Art League through the economic challenges that lie ahead.” Ms. Miller comes to the Art League after a thirty-seven year career in the banking industry. For eighteen years she served in branch management, regional sales and marketing, human resources and operations in Long Island, Queens and Manhattan at National Westminster Bank USA. Charlee enjoyed an equally long tenure at JP Morgan Chase as Vice

This varied experience has given her the skills to broaden the Art League’s base of support, deepen existing relationships, manage costs, enhance programs and empower the staff to develop and grow. Her knowledge of the demands facing notfor-profit organizations derive from her fourteen years as Board member and Treasurer of DebRA of America, Inc., an organization committed to

research toward a cure for Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa, a devastating skin disease, and advocating for patients and their families. Charlee also has a strong record of civic activities. In 2000 she was awarded the Women in Urban Living Scholarship at Marymount Manhattan College for fieldwork with the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone, President Clinton’s project to revitalize the Harlem business district. Then in 2007 she was appointed by Governor Pataki to serve on the board of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation, a public-benefit corporation responsible

for the development of Roosevelt Island. During her three-year term she was directly involved in the project to replace the 30-year-old tram connecting the island to Manhattan. Charlee Miller is a Financial Planning Professional, an Accredited Domestic Partner Advisor (ADPA) and a Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor (CRPC), granted by the College of Financial Planning. Her involvement with the visual and plastic arts began in 2004, when she enrolled in the pottery studios at Earthworks in Manhattan. She pursued her interest in portrait

and figure sculpture at the West Side Y, the 92nd Street Y, and the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. Having moved from Manhattan to Eastport two years ago, she began taking weekend ceramics classes at the Art League of Long Island prior to her appointment. A firm believer in the power of the art-making process to heal and enrich life, Charlee is “looking forward to getting out into the community to discover how the Art League can add value to the lives and families on Long Island.”

Tri-M Ensemble

The East Islip Middle School’s Tri-M Brass Ensemble and director Concetta Stevens helped brighten the holidays for the community, performing both at the East Islip Fire Department’s tree lighting ceremony on December 7th and at the Momentum at South Bay nursing home in East Islip on December 9th. Participating middle schoolers included tuba player John Donovan,

trombonists Jack Bonner and Kurt Eide, horn players Emily Orski and Michael Stevens, and trumpeters Joe Corrao, Richie Hughes, Kevin Jacobsen and Evan Mauner. At the tree lighting ceremony, the studentmusicians helped kick off the holiday with Christmas songs like “Deck The Halls,” “Jingle Bells” and “Joy To The World.” Santa and friends then arrived on a fire truck while the brass

ensemble played “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” Two days later, the students performed at Momentum, bringing holiday cheer and lifting the spirits of the patients in the audience. Their setlist included a Hanukkah medley as well as “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” and other holiday favorites.

Senior Signs Through years of hard work on the court and in the classroom, Islip High School senior Shannon Duer has received a full scholarship to play basketball at the New York Institute of Technology this coming fall. She plans to major in communications during her time at NYIT. A member of the varsity basketball team since the eighth grade and captain of the team since her sophomore year of high school, Shannon has been

named an All-League, All-County and All-State player, has led New York State in rebounds for the past two years, is the leading scorer in Islip High School history, and has more than 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career. “I have been coaching for more than 30 years, and Shannon is the hardest working young lady I have ever coached,” said Islip High School girls varsity basketball coach Dave

Goodman. “What amazes me most about her is her focus on teamwork and her great attitude, which spreads to her teammates. When Shannon is on the court, I know we’re in good hands.” When she is not playing for Islip High School, Shannon is on the court for the Long Island Lightning travel basketball team, which is coached by Greg Flynn.

SENIOR SIGNS - Pictured with Shannon are Coach Greg Flynn, Superintendent of Schools Susan Schnebel, High School Principal Dr. Eileen Rossman, and Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Robert Panariello.

Lesson In Broadcast

East Islip High School students in technology teachers James Connell’s and Hal Kench’s classes got a firsthand lesson on what being a news reporter in the field of broadcast television is like on December 7th. MSG Varsity media trainer Amanda Pugliese visited their video production/ broadcast television and graphic communication classrooms for a presentation on the do’s and don’ts of video news reporting. As a part of its ongoing initiative to help support local high school video programs, Cablevision’s MSG Varsity program offers free instruction from its realworld media specialists to help with classroom instruction. The East Islip High School Technology Club and technology department first teamed up with MSG Varsity last year to assist

in showcasing East Islip School District events. MSG Varsity is a first-of-itskind initiative comprised of a full-time television network (viewable only via Cablevision at channel 614), a comprehensive online destination and a groundbreaking interactive service dedicated to high school sports, academics and activities throughout the tri-state area. “I helped get this program started last year because I have a true passion for film and video editing,” explained Kench. “With the help of MSG Varsity, our programs have been raised to new heights.” MSG Varsity kickstarted East Islip’s program with donations of a highdefinition video camera, still camera, assorted microphones and seed money to purchase two iMac computers for video

editing. Since then, East Islip students have submitted over 100 videos, 100 photo galleries and 150 articles to MSG Varsity’s East Islip High School page on MSG Varsity. The school’s Technology Club to date has received over $5000 in startup funds and also earned over $1000 in scholarship money that was awarded in June 2012 to East Islip alum David Tekverk, who is currently studying film and video at SUNY Oswego. “When Mr. Kench got this program started last year, I had no idea how much it would benefit the entire technology department,” said Connell. “The equipment purchased through this program has helped raise the level of multiple technology classes and has given us the opportunity to expand on what we are teaching our students.”

Connecting With The Past

The fifth edition of East Islip High School English teacher Greg Kguloian’s Lit.2 Life cross-curriculum lessons revolved around the theme of “related and connected,” bridging both personal and American history with literature. In Lit.2 Life 5.0, 10thgraders studying 1942 and the World War II era – and reading such period works as John Knowles’ “A Separate Peace” and Elie Wiesel’s “Night” – were shown “American Memory: The U.S. Home Front,” a tactile display of numerous period artifacts from Kguloian’s family, as well as a mini-movie about the teacher’s old family home upstate. The short film, “The Slow Smokeless Burning of Decay,” was used as an allusion to the Robert Frost poem “The Wood-Pile,” asking students the question, “Can we keep the memory of who we were and the lessons we have learned alive into the future?” The haunting imagery of the now-decrepit home – it was in Kguloian’s family from the 1930s to the 1990s – slowly falling apart was accompanied by a quote from Talking Heads leader David Byrne, “Things fall apart; it’s scientific.” “I ask the students to think about that Byrne statement,” Kguloian said, “using it to generate thoughtful discussion and discourse with my students as to whether or not that sentiment is really true.” For many of the students, seeing and touching actual mementos from the period

of “A Separate Peace” and “Night” proved fascinating. “Those two novels have a setting that touches the year 1942,” said Kguloian, “and the American Memory presentation’s actual family artifacts, movies and stories helped bring the literature we read together to life for the students in my class. I try and enrich my lessons to include extra efforts, which make the literature and time periods that we research, report and react to ‘related and connected.’ The students seem to love it and they get a richer academic experience, true appreciation, and deeper understanding about the humanity that unites us all.” Ninth-graders currently learning about 1935 and the Great Depression era were presented with Lit.2 Life 5.5, featuring student performances recreating the 1935 Tom Robinson trial from the book they were covering, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” “This was used primarily to help the students get a relatable understanding of what the book’s main character and narrator, Scout, described as her family’s ‘homestead,’ known in the novel as Finche’s Landing,” remarked Kguloian. They also viewed another minimovie that featured a New York State Education Department sign next door to Kguloian’s family homestead. “I made the mini-movie to inspire my pupils to learn about ‘related’ connections in their own families by

sharing the connection for my family and the year 1935, the year of the Tom Robinson trial.” Both lessons were timed to facilitate interaction and discussion between the students and their own families, particularly with older relatives. “The kids read, researched and created their own projects about these time periods and then, when their families got together for the holidays, my pupils had some interesting figurative fodder to chew on with their relatives when the inevitable question comes up, ‘So, what have you been learning about in school?’ The older generations appreciated the related connections that I strive to build among my students in our lessons, and it afforded the current generation the opportunity to find common ground via literature and real life.” In an overview of two connected lesson plans, Kguloian said, “Both sophomores and freshmen alike are taking an active part in my ELA classes to help themselves and others bring our literature to life. My mission is to inform students in my classes to better understand the previous generations and what we all share. My objective is for the kids in my class to see me not just as their teacher, but also as a current member of an American family who lived through the same time period that we study for two novels, one short story and assorted poetry.”

Helping The Community

Bay Shore Middle School teacher Jen Kovarik and her classes have been instrumental in helping the Bay Shore Beautification Society and the Bay Shore Historical Society over the past few months. In fact, Ms. Kovarik has been helping both organizations through her students for years. This year, her students have assisted the organizations

by helping with the monthly newsletter and special event invitations. They have also made flower arrangements for secretaries around the holidays and for veterans at the Veterans Beacon House for Flag Day and bake twice a year for the Bay Shore Historical Society’s fundraising events. In addition, they entered the Bay Shore Flower

Show this past September, exhibiting individual arrangements. They also created an Education Exhibit on Recycling, entitled Knowing Your Labels, which earned them the Top Award. Ms. Kovarik and her students are truly hard workers and a great help to many community groups.

STUFFING THE BUS - This December, students at South Country School showed their compassionate nature by donating countless food items to benefit others in the Bay Shore community. For the past four years, South Country School has been participating in its own version of Stuff-A-Bus. Each year, the students and staff collect hundreds of donations, including canned goods, rice, cereal, soup, pasta and juice boxes, all of which are sent to St. Patrick’s Hospitality Center, a center that provides meals and supplies to members of our community who are in need. This year, South Country School collected over 1,400 items.

“The international exchange visit to Denmark is a capstone experience for the IB Diploma student,” said Jon Nelson, International Baccalaureate (IB) Program Coordinator. “Developing intercultural empathy and understanding is a required element of the IB curriculum and is reflected in the international dimensions of every IB course.” Thus, to truly understand the workings of a global world, students should ideally gain firsthand experience of another culture and interact with the people of that culture. In November, twenty students and two teachers from Sct. Knuds Gymnasium, an upper secondary school in Odense, Denmark, arrived in Bay Shore for six days to take part in the first part of the IB Program Student Exchange. The twenty Bay Shore High School IB students who hosted the

twenty Danish students remarked unanimously that doing so was one of the best educational experiences they’d ever had. Although the opportunity to host a student in itself is a beneficial intercultural experience, IB students who are able to travel to Denmark and stay with a Danish host family will achieve still greater international perspective. The ability to immerse themselves in the day-today experience of Danish culture will forever change the way they view American culture, leading to a deeper understanding of their own values and beliefs. The purpose of the grant money so generously awarded by the Evelyn Blose Holman Education Foundation (EBHEF) is to provide support to students struggling to cover travel expenses to Denmark associated with airfare and lodging. The Denmark Exchange Trip was

Recently, Brook Avenue School PFA Member Nadja Genc-Forbes took time to write and submit a grant application to the Walmart Organization. As a result, the Brook Avenue PFA was awarded $750. “I have never written a grant request before and just thought I would try

my luck before the deadline ended,” Mrs. Genc-Forbes stated, “so I was surprised to see any response, as so many other organizations write to them.” The Walmart Foundation wrote to the Brook Avenue PFA, “We believe that your organization is doing important work for the

communities you serve, and we are proud that we are able to support you in your efforts.” Congratulations to Nadja, the Brook Avenue PFA, and the students and teachers at Brook Avenue School for being awarded this wonderful grant.

designed to be affordable, with costs reduced by having students reside in the homes of Danish host families. Still, airfare, due to airport departure fees and international taxes, is prohibitively expensive for many students. When combined with other group and individual fundraising efforts, the EBHEF’s educational grants will make the trip a feasible option for motivated IB students. The Evelyn Blose Holman Education Foundation’s mission is to support the students of Bay Shore through financial assistance and help students access programs and resources that allow them to achieve the highest quality education possible. Giving Back

Last month, students from Bay Shore High School’s International Baccalaureate History courses participated in the first of three Intergenerational Roundtable events at the Gurwin Jewish Assisted Living facility in Commack. The program aims to engage students from four Long Island school districts in dialogue with residents who were eyewitnesses to major historical events. The theme of this first event was World War

II. The veterans with whom the students spoke described their leadership in unique experiences such as upholding martial law after the Pearl Harbor attack, combat at Okinawa, fighting in General Patton’s army, and earning the Purple Heart. The IB History students were able to integrate this experience into their study of methods in the history discipline, such as perspective and primary source accounts. Bay Shore High School’s

Other aspects of the renovation include a fresh coat of

paint to the other walls, new window fixtures and additional seating. These small fixes hope to make a more enjoyable adopting experience for those interested in adoption.
