4 WEEK KARATE PROGRAM & FREE UNIFORM* Michael Carolan made a successful title defense as East Islip Middle School’s spelling champion, achieving victory in the school’s annual spelling bee for the second year in a row. The eighth-grader won the January 11th event with the word “baccalaureate,” edging out 43 other participants in 10 rounds

of competition. Sixthgrader Victoria Keenan was the runner-up. The spelling bee was coordinated by seventhgrade English teacher Ann Mingione, who served as a judge along with fellow teacher Brian Deedy. A third teacher, Michelle Wagner, was the event’s announcer. “It was wonderful to

You never know what you might find when cleaning out the closet. I recently came across a handful of those origami-type, square and triangle-folded notes that we all used to exchange like crazy back in middle school. I remember writing dozens upon dozens of them and slipping them through the vents of my friends’ lockers between classes, then excitedly waiting for them to write back so I would have my own “mail” to look forward to the next time I stopped at my own locker. How funny. It’s too bad I didn’t save them all, as I’m sure they would have made for some fascinating reading all these

years later. Notes full of class schedules, song lyrics, lists of boys we had crushes on…the usual pre-teen drama that seemed oh-soimportant at the time. We even developed our own language of sorts, with abbreviations and symbols that (so we thought) only we could comprehend. Such innocence. And then there were the “love” letters, those cute little poems surrounded by lots of hearts and x’s and o’s, and of course the requisite “A.A.F.” signifying the “always and forever” mentality that all 12 year-olds seem to have with regard to “love.” As corny as it all sounds now, there was definitely an underlying sweetness to those types of notes, a sense that somehow, with that

scrawled message of affection, everything was “official.” It’s a wonder, thinking back on it, how any of us managed to get any work done in between composing these little nuggets of wisdom – because you know they all had to be written during class time. After all, how else to make sure our friends were continuously updated on our comings and goings from the last 40 minute class! So many memories encapsulated by those little folded pieces of paper. A slice of life, preserved for all eternity on an 8-1/2 x 11-inch piece of loose-leaf paper. It doesn’t get any better than that. Can’t wait to see what other treasures my closet will uncover.

School Record Set

PURPLE DAY - It was Purple Day on January 15th for East Islip High School’s Toddler High. The long-running child development program’s agenda for January has focused on colors and shapes, with a different color of the day for each meeting. Teacher Kelly Schwender, the toddlers and the purple-clad juniors and seniors from the high school met to work that day on a special purple octopus project.

Qualifying Tournament Approximately 85 elementary and middle school robotics teams will compete in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (FLL) Qualifying Tournaments on February 2nd-3rd. The event is being sponsored by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. and the Central Islip Union Free School District. The tournaments will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days at Central Islip Senior High School, located at 85 Wheeler Road in Central Islip. This year’s challenge is Senior Solutions, which focuses on solving problems that senior citizens face. Teams will partner with seniors, hold conversations with them about their struggles, and together create solutions as to how these setbacks can be improved. Upon completion, teams will come together and share the discussed solutions to their senior teammates’ problems. This activity will connect young students

and the elderly together to help ensure that a stronger bond within the community is created. FIRST LEGO League is an international program for 9- to 14-year-old children created in a partnership between FIRST and the LEGO Group in 1998, based on their common belief that fun and learning go hand-in-hand, and that an inspired mind can accomplish anything. Each September, FIRST LEGO League announces the annual Challenge to teams, engaging them in authentic scientific research and hands-on robotics design. Using LEGO MINDSTORMS technologies and LEGO play materials, children work alongside adult mentors to design, build, and program robots to complete missions based on real-world challenges. After eight intense weeks, the competition season culminates at high-energy, sports-like tournaments. On December 1st, 2012, thirty-eight FLL teams participated in a practice tournament at Roosevelt

Hall in Farmingdale State College to prepare for the qualifiers. “The practice competitions that were held in December made everyone involved more eager for the upcoming Qualifying Tournaments. We expect those participants to bring their creativity, teamwork, problem solving skills and gracious professionalism to the tournaments,” stated Janet Anderson, of SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. For more information about SBPLI, visit www.sbpli.org or call 631.627.8400.

Along with her wealth of knowledge on the topic, she brought along samples of some of her work, showed the students her Eye on Design website, and helped answer their questions about the graphic design field. “Mrs. Schreiner provided valuable insight into the profession that only someone with her experience and knowledge could truly share,” said Connell. “It was truly great

editing, vector drawing, desktop publishing and presentation graphics. The students gain hands-on experience with design, layout, graphics, scanning and digital photography. Connell introduces them to the capabilities and functions of Adobe’s three powerful desktop publishing programs, Illustrator CS4, InDesign and Photoshop, and with these software programs, his students learn to create functional documents such as brochures, flyers, business advertisements, posters, greeting cards and restored photographs. “This has always been a great way to give the students some perspective on what they are learning in my classes,” Connell added. “With experience comes knowledge, and Mrs. Schreiner provided them with both.”

Make A Difference Five students representing East Islip High School’s high-flying Math Team – junior William Meehan and seniors Allison Casey, Terence McHugh, Julia O’Connor and Peter Zepf – participated in the full-day Suffolk County Mathematics Teachers Association Annual Tournament on January 4th, held at Suffolk Community College in

Selden. In individual competition, Meehan earned a perfect score in the 11th-grade free response questions (15 out of 15) as well as a perfect score in the general multiple choice questions (10 out of 10), receiving an award for this superlative accomplishment. “The five people on our team for this tournament

are the highest East Islip scorers in the monthly Math League competitions held throughout the school year,” noted teacher Maria Burns, the adviser to the club. The full Math Team squad at East Islip, currently in sixth place in the county, includes 20 members. Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax

2013 can be the year you make a difference in someone’s life by becoming a volunteer at Long Island Crisis Center. The Crisis Center, the 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week suicide prevention and crisis intervention hotline, is currently recruiting volunteers to participate in its upcoming Counselor Assistant Training Program.

No experience is necessary and the hours are flexible (around-theclock) to accommodate the individual needs of volunteers. The free, comprehensive orientation training program takes place over 3 three-hour sessions at the Crisis Center’s office in Bellmore. February’s training will be held on three successive

Wednesday evenings from 7 to 10 p.m. on February 6th, 13th and 20th. March’s training will be held on three successive Thursday evenings from 7 to 10 p.m. on March 7th, 14th and 21st. For more information, check out the website, www. longislandcrisiscenter.org and click on “Volunteer;” then call 516.826.0244 to schedule an interview.

Rockin’ For Autism

KICKING IT OFF - Central Islip High School attended this year’s kickoff for the 2013 FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition, sponsored by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) and Stony Brook University. They gathered with more than 40 participating high schools on Saturday, January 5th at Stony Brook University’s Jacob Javits Center for a presentation and simulcast broadcast from New Hampshire. Members of the Central Islip robotics team are pictured displaying the contents of the kit of parts.

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, is hosting its annual Rockin’ For Autism Concert on Sunday, February 17th, from 3 to 8 p.m. Mulcahy’s Pub and Music Hall in Wantagh will once again be heating things up with Long Island’s best rock-n-roll bands to benefit children and adults with Autism and other developmental disabilities. “Rockin’ for Autism is all about coming together as a community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said Chairman of the event Jim Cronin and a member of the DDI Foundation Board. “This event will be a wonderful way to share

a great time while raising funds to help aid the muchneeded services provided by DDI. It is heartwarming to have talented individuals enthusiastically lend themselves to help benefit the individuals who receive services daily through DDI’s many programs. I encourage everyone to come out and take part in this special day with some great tunes, terrific prizes and good people.” For a $30 donation guests will enjoy the sounds of live music with an all-star lineup of legendary Long Island bands including 1 Step Ahead, The Cold Spring Harbor Band (Billy Joel tribute band), Just Cause and Dr. G’s All Star Veteran Band. Gift baskets auction, raffles, food, cash bar and more will be available for all attendees.

Legendary guitarist George Edward “G.E.” Smith will be raffling off his autographed guitar. G.E. is most recognized for his work as musical director of Saturday Night Live and his work with Roger Waters. With over 700 attendees at last years event, this year promises to be bigger and better. Advanced ticket sales are available by calling 631.366.2978 or online at www.rockinforautism.org. “Its heartwarming to know that each year these bands donate their time to help DDI raise funds,” commented Steve Alliano, Musical Director for Rockin’ for Autism. “They put on a great show for the hundreds of people that are looking to support a worthwhile cause.”
