Many thanks to Summit Council Co-chairs, Mary Louise Cohen and Sean Collins, for organizing the breakfast and to the Town of Islip officials for welcoming the Summit Council members so warmly. Fred Hill, Staff Chaplain, worked tirelessly on building this chapel as a place for peace and quiet moments of prayer. “This chapel has been a dream come true for the residents and staff who now have a place to renew themselves and find peace and comfort. The chapel provides a source of power and inspiration to all that visit or reside within the facility,” stated Fr.

Fred Hill. More than 50 people, consisting of staff, residents, Administration and Board Members joined Bishop Murphy for this special day of prayer and services. Bishop Murphy spent time visiting with the residents and staff, while thanking all for what they do each and every day. achievements LICADD and its staff continue to make in the field of social work.” Founded in 1955, the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is the largest membership association for professional social workers in the world, with 160,000 members in the United States and overseas. Each year, the New York State Chapter recognizes one agency, department, organization or government entity that best promotes and upholds the Association’s standard of values and ethics while developing innovative approaches to better meet client needs. In addition to LICADD’s strong track-record of developing evidence-based programing in response to trends in substance abuse and addiction on Long Island, the agency actively pushes for effective public policy as it relates to underage drinking, substance abuse and access to treatment. In 2012, LICADD celebrated the passage of the ISTOP

(Internet System for Tracking Over-Prescribing) Act and welcomed Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice to a press conference in the agency’s Mineola office. In Suffolk County, better oversight of sober homes was approved and a Narcan Pilot Program has resulted in more than 30 overdose reversals in the last three months. 2013 marks the 57th year of LICADD, and the expansion of many of the agency’s core programs including its BUDDY Mentoring, Start 2Stop and Open Arms Employee Assistance Program (EAP). LICADD’s resources not only support individuals dealing with addiction and recovery but address the broad range of issues that friends and loved ones often experience. From sibling and grief and loss support groups, to family education and anger management programs, LICADD offers a comprehensive list of resources from its three offices in Mineola, Ronkonkoma and Riverhead, NY. For more information, please call us at 516.747.2606, or email recover@licadd.org. For a full list of LICADD’s programs and resources, please visit www.licadd. org.

Storm-Sanity By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m beginning to despise Mother Nature. More specifically, I despise those weather forecasters, news anchors and so-called “reporters” who insist on inciting what amounts to mass hysteria every time a single snowflake or shower is detected on the horizon. Honestly, have we learned nothing from Hurricane Sandy? Back in October, there was plenty of advance warning, to be sure; but how many decided against taking precautionary measures based solely on past precedent? What’s that they say about the boy who cried wolf? Oh, eventually, he will be right…but no one will listen. Fast forward to my most favorite season of all – winter –

with all its blizzards and sleet and ice storms. You know, the season where one flake in the forecast calls for widespread panic. Let’s all run in droves to the stores to snap up every last shovel and snow-blower – “just in case.” Let’s stock up on milk and eggs because, after all, once the power goes out, what better necessities to have on hand? Oh, and let’s not forget to wait in line for gas once again – you know, for all that driving we’ll surely be doing in two feet of snow. Seriously people? Personally, I’m a big fan of waking up, looking out the window and assessing the situation for myself. And if the power goes out, well that’s a whole other ballgame. Then gone are those cozy dreams of being snowed in with nothing but a pile of DVDs and books to catch up on while you bake

cookies and make hot cocoa. Honestly, the last time I truly enjoyed a “snow day,” I was probably about eight years old. It’s a bit different when you need to shovel your way out and work for a living, isn’t it fellow adults? And doesn’t it always seem that the worst weather hits right when you have a million things to do? When you have all these grand plans to be productive and proactive and all that good stuff? So much for that. Best plan: pull the covers over your head, go back to sleep and enjoy the peace and quiet. No hysteria, no stockpile of milk and eggs, no need to skate all over the roads. No sense trying to fight what you can’t control. Trust me, there is no shovel that’s a match for Mother Nature.

Programs Available The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) offers an eight-hour Anger Management Class for adults seeking to learn skills to manage conflict, stress and anger. The course is offered monthly in LICADD’s Mineola office, and complements the agency’s 12-week Anger Management Program that meets in Ronkonkoma on Monday evenings and Mineola on Tuesday evenings. LICADD’s anger management program is

an evidence-based psychoeducational intervention designed to help participants build skills in stress management, interpersonal communication, empathy, conflict resolution, impulse control and emotional intelligence. New participants can expect an assessment by a LICADD Clinical Team member to determine the anger management issues and the reasons that the client seeks anger management help. During the anger

management assessment, the agency assesses for signs or symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, mental health disorders, trauma, physical and sexual abuse, legal involvement, domestic violence, substance abuse and dependence issues. Clients can choose between the one-time eight-hour course or the 12 sessions that meet weekly. In each, clients have an opportunity to identify their triggers, and practice practical, effective strategies for processing and controlling

Upon completion of the class and/ or course, participants receive a certificate as proof of their progress. explains Anger Management Coordinator Marcie Siciliano, “we provide the education and resources for our clients to deal with stress in healthy ways.” The fees associated with the Anger Management services are minimal and competitive. The assessment fee is $40 and an additional $40 per class each week. For individuals attending the one-day eight-hour session, the fee is $199. Participants can purchase the Anger Management Resource guide

Julianna Longo, a fifth-grader at Ruth C. Kinney Elementary, has been selected as a Suffolk County-level winner in the musical composition category in this year’s PTA Reflections contest. For her prize-winning entry on the theme of The Magic Of A Moment, Longo wrote two very descriptive paragraphs about a magical moment that she experienced while at the beach with her family and friends, reflected in

“Shining Bright,” her musical composition for the viola. “Julianna is a very talented and dedicated young musician,” said her orchestra teacher, Angela Fetcho. “She did a great job making every note sound like an event from her day at the beach, and described each measure of her music in well-written paragraphs. The description allows the listener to understand which notes and dynamics represent all of the events

from her magical day.” Longo, who has been studying viola with Fetcho since third grade, will now move on to the state level of the Reflections competition, and has been invited to the PTA Reflections showcase on April 6th, where she will be honored for her excellence in musical composition for grades 3-5. East Islip High School student Kayla Roundsman is a jack of all trades on the soccer field, playing at midfield, forward and defense while serving as varsity team captain, and she will be bringing her multifaceted athletic talents to the Loyola University Maryland program next fall. The senior, who has been playing soccer since age 7 and joined East Islip’s varsity squad as a freshman in 2010, signed

a National Letter of Intent on February 6th to don the grey and green of Loyola, accompanied by her proud parents. “I think it’s a good school for me to play at a high level,” she said of Loyola, a private college in Baltimore, Md., established in 1856. “The girls on the team were nice and I loved the school. East Islip Middle School Assistant Principal Christian Seifert was honored as an Administrator of the Year by the Western Suffolk Counselors’ Association at the group’s annual luncheon on January 31st. The ceremony, held in the Hunt Room at Dowling College’s Fortunoff Hall in Oakdale, was sponsored by the Island Drafting and Technical Institute of Amityville. Seifert was one of three administrators honored with the award, the others being North Babylon High School Assistant Principal Michael Scottaline and Dr. Mary DeRose, the interim principal of Amityville Memorial High School. Dr. Kate Rowe, the president of WSCA, told the honorees, “This recognition represents a lot of hard work, intelligence and dedication to the schools you work for.” After a speech by Dr. Clyde Payne, the dean of Dowling’s School of Education, the honorees

were introduced. Seifert’s award was sponsored by Peter Cabral, a guidance counselor at the middle school. “Chris has demonstrated integrity, dedication and compassion to the students and parents of East Islip,” said Cabral, praising Seifert’s outstanding leadership abilities. “Every morning and afternoon you can find him in the bus loop welcoming students. He works closely with all the guidance counselors and his level of enthusiasm is incredible. He has earned the respect of our guidance department, faculty and students.” Noting that Seifert speaks three languages including Spanish, Cabral added, “He is our go-to guy in difficult situations. He makes Spanish-speaking families feel at ease.” Taking to the podium to accept his award, Seifert touched on themes of maturity and empathy, and remarked, “This is a day and age where guidance is more important than ever. Our counselors are there as a first line of support and I am lucky to work with an expert, dedicated group of counselors at East Islip Middle School.” East Islip administrators in attendance at the event included John J. Commitment To Saving Lives Before the puck drops on Saturday, February 16th the New York Islanders Hockey Club and the American Red Cross will, for its third year, partner for a blood drive to continue their lifesaving commitment. The blood drive will take place at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. As a special thank you for helping their neighbors, all presenting donors will receive a voucher for two tickets to a 2012-2013 Islanders regular season home game.* This marks the first of four blood drives the two organizations will host this year. Local donors are needed all year round to ensure the blood supply stays strong. Blood is an essential component for patient care in area hospitals, and the only source of blood is a healthy, volunteer donor.

Your one donation can help save up to three lives and it only takes about an hour of your time. “By rolling up your sleeve, you may help provide lifesaving blood where and when it is needed. This profound, heart-felt act may help save the life of a real person in your community,” said Donna M. Morrissey, Director of Communications, Red Cross Northeast Division. “The blood drive has become a staple of the Islanders’ community outreach efforts,” Dave Decina, Islanders VP of Corporate Partnerships, said. “It has grown with every event, testifying to the strength of our fans’ communal ties. As an organizational family, we take comfort in knowing our efforts bring us a step closer to a better future.” The Red Cross blood

drive will take place in the Lower Box Office of the Coliseum. Walk-ins are always welcome, but donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment in advance by calling 1.800.RED.CROSS (1.800.733.2767) or by visiting redcrossblood.org. All presenting donors will also receive a voucher for one free entrée from Moe’s Southwest Grill and have the opportunity to enter to win many great prizes including a luxury suite for ten people at the Saturday, March 9th Islanders game, a catered lunch for 20 from Moe’s Southwest Grill and a Hockey Getaway Package which includes two Islanders game tickets to the March 22nd game, a “High Five” opportunity as players come onto the ice, overnight accommodations and breakfast at the Long Island Marriott.*

Rocking For A Cause

The 8th Annual Key Club Talent Show at East Islip High School on January 17th proved a great success, demonstrating the talents of the student body and earning proceeds of $1,500 to benefit a local student battling illness. Emcees Bridget Cavanaugh and Sarah Schreiner introduced a host of student performers, including Rachel Baio, Paul Brett, Matt Carillo, Emily Cassar, Jackie DeRosa, Destiny DeSimone, Paige Epstein, Emily Fackelman, Jessica Falci, Dalton Jabs, Joe Janover, Mustafa Kemal, Heather Kerney, Sarah Knoth, Steve Lorofice, Bruce Morrow, Elizabeth O’Connor, Nick Santangelo, Pat Valoy and Noelia Vazquez, as well as the bands At the Corner of Who & What and Flying

Monkeys from Space. The event also featured a charitable endeavor by Key Club adviser and social studies teacher Dan Falkman, who shaved off his ponytail for a cause as the show’s grand finale. Falkman, who has been a fixture for a decade now at East Islip High School and currently teaches the United States History & Government and Participation in Government courses, is known for his love of Long Island history, for his proclivity for Starbucks and for his long hair, now shorn. The Key Club at East Islip has raised thousands of dollars over the years for charitable causes. Said Falkman, “Over the years, our various communitybased fundraisers and

functions have included reading books for the local elementary schools during the holidays, distributing candy canes with Santa, and the Wounded Warrior project, which gives students an opportunity to write letters to soldiers overseas.” The Talent Show extravaganza is a big part of this fundraising tradition, having served to obtain donations for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, the Red Cross and even various members of the East Islip community who are facing financial crisis due to mounting medical bills. This year’s show had a very special recipient. “Our Key Club is always looking for ways to help in our community as well as looking at problems that face our world,” explained Falkman. “Senior Nicole Corapi, the club’s president, has coordinated programs and activities for the Key Club this year, including our recent Movember event. We raised a few hundred dollars for men’s cancer initiatives with Movember, and I figured that if shaving my mustache could raise a few hundred, why not go the next step? This year’s show was memorable because we were raising money for a local young girl, Taylor Ryan, as well as donating my ponytail to Locks of Love.”

Super Celebration

“There was a lot of football excitement in RCK today,” declared Danielle Naccarato, the principal of Ruth C. Kinney Elementary. Students from kindergarten through fifth grade celebrated the coming of Super Bowl Sunday in the school’s gymnasium on February 1st. RCK physical education instructors Bonnie Rabin and Bernie Ruhlig – joined by kindergarten teacher and football fan Karin Hipp

and LIU Post’s Vincent Hamel – set up various football-related activities for students to participate in. The youngsters enjoyed taking on the roles of quarterback, running back and kicker; learned some fun facts about the Super Bowl and the two competing teams and cities; and had the opportunity to vote for either the San Francisco 49’ers or Baltimore Ravens to take home the trophy on Feb. 3. Many of the students were

dressed for the occasion, as it was “Football Friday” and the children had been encouraged to show their school spirit by wearing their favorite football attire. “Ms. Rabin and Mr. Ruhlig did a great job and the students really enjoyed themselves,” said Naccarato. Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax

A table of ivy topiaries shaped into animals by Mark Havens’ Horticulture students were on display for visitors who oooh’d and ahhh’d. Topiaries of this type sell online for $37 to over $200. The lucky recipients of those created by the Islip Career Center (ICC) students are typically their families.

However, a heart-shaped topiary was sold to a visitor the other day who said she absolutely had to have it for February – the valentine month. “The class learned how to take care of the plants with water and light, they trained them into shapes, and planted them with moss toppings, creating

live topiaries,” explained the teacher. Asked how hard it is for a novice to do, he replied, “On a scale of 10, perhaps a 7 or 8.” Some of Mr. Havens’ graduates have gone on to work in the floral industry and have stayed in touch with him.
