Spring has sprung. That’s it. I’ve decided. One sunny day amid a week of snow and sleet and rain, and it’s official. Enough of this winter wonderland nonsense. Funny, since we have really only had one substantial snowstorm over the course of the last three or so winters; but the one was… well, quite a storm, shall we say. And just like that, all the relatively pleasant winters of the past few years have been forgotten – wiped out from the collective memory. Isn’t that always the way? One season gives way to the

next – and we, as a society, go from complaining about the cold, to whining about the spring rain, to being exhausted by the oppressive heat…and then, oh no, here comes that autumn chill again! One endless cycle of wishing for something other than what we have, only to promptly wish it away as soon as it’s within our grasp. We are a flaky bunch, aren’t we? And to think other societies would give anything to live in a temperate climate such as ours, complete with four seasons – and the occasional natural disaster of course. Seriously, in the last year or

two, we’ve experienced two substantial hurricanes, a blizzard of epic proportions, a minor earthquake…am I forgetting anything else? Dare we ask – what next? Well, what’s next for me is spring. Beautiful, mild, clear and crisp. Spring. My favorite season, when the summer is still looming, everything is blooming and the days take on a renewed, vital energy that has been missing throughout the long winter of hibernation and doldrums. Sure, it may officially be a month or so away – but the mentality is here now. Embrace it.

On January 30th, Bay Shore Gardiner Manor School held its 13th annual Circus and invited every 2nd grade student in the district to attend. This year’s theme, Billboard Top 100 Hits, showcased popular contemporary songs. Each year, the Gardiner Manor Circus features every 5th grader - in the

show! Students sign up to be clowns, stilt walkers, unicycle riders, devil stickers, diabolos, pep squad dancers, jugglers, jump ropers, plate spinners, acrobats or part of the backstage crew. This year’s show ended with the entire 5th grade class singing the Gardiner Manor song, written by Music teacher Josh

Kant. The GMS Physical Education Staff directed and created this year’s successful Circus, having only had the month of January to prepare. Many thanks to Eli Alam, Tess Balzano, Mary Drago and Mike Herbst for all their hard work and dedication.

Bettinelli’s Community Boxing Academy was voted The Best of Long Island in both 2011 and 2012 for best boxing program; presented by The Long Island Press. “I consider it a blessing to be able to positively impact the lives of young people. But none of this would be possible without what I consider the most qualified and passionate team of like-minded coaches, mentors, and supporters. Receiving this honor makes our whole staff proud and fuels our desire to continue the great work we began doing back in 2004,” said Ray Bettinelli, Head Boxing Coach and Director of Operations for BCBA.” As part of the re-

opening celebration, residents are invited to tour the facility, meet the staff and enroll their children in a variety of youth programs including Amateur Boxing, Judo, Capoeira and After School Basketball. Refreshments will be served and party favors given to the first 100 kids to attend. The Pledge of Allegiance kicks off the event led by Ret. Chief of Police, Lou Telano and Ret. Lt. Robert Johnson along with members of the Armed Forces. There will be a benediction by a Police Chaplin and business leaders and politicians will be on hand for a ceremonial ribbon cutting. In addition, the stories of special guest speakers serve to motivate, educate and inspire. Mrs. Nieto’s 4th grade students at Bay Shore’s Gardiner Manor School recently enjoyed a visit from author Vincent Lauria, also the grandfather of 4th grader Jessica Puleo. Mr. Lauria, a Vietnam Veteran and retired custodian from William Floyd School District, was inspired to write his first children’s book,

He spoke about being faced with negativity, from people who told him he could never publish a book, and declared to the students: Believe in yourself and

anything is possible. Mr. Lauria is currently working on another children’s book and has published two books of poems. He also told the class that the secret to becoming a better writer is to “Read, read, read!” Many thanks to Mr. Lauria for taking time out to inspire students at Gardiner Manor School.
