Liberty Award David Lopez, Director of Facilities Management and Engineering, and his staff of 13 at Southampton Hospital, were awarded a New York State Senate Liberty Award, by New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle recently. One of the highest civilian honors that New Yorker’s can receive, the Liberty Award was created in 2000 and is presented to individuals who have merited special commendation for exceptional, heroic or humanitarian acts and achievements on behalf of their fellow New Yorkers. The Hospital department
was recognized for its 24/7 dedication during Hurricane Sandy to maintain electrical power critical to keeping Hospital patients safe. “Dave Lopez and his staff ensured that Southampton Hospital patients and staff remained safe and with power for critically important hospital functions throughout Hurricane Sandy,” said Senator LaValle. “The award recipients today are recognized for their professionalism, exceptional skill and unflagging dedication.” On behalf of the entire Hospital staff and Board
of Directors, Hospital President and CEO Robert Chaloner, expressed pride in the staff of Facilities and Engineering. “At Southampton Hospital, we have always known that Dave Lopez and the members of his department have extraordinary dedication and the special skills required to keep the Hospital up and running. No matter what the situation, we can depend on them to come to the rescue with a solution and, just as importantly, a reassuring smile. We could not ask for anything better.”

Creative Expressions When I Can’t Sleep... The Gallery

The dark streets can be dangerous, But exercise is good for the body and soul, There is not much activity because of the time, Exercise is invigorating especially when it is cold… My wife tells me how dangerous it can be, So I try to avoid walking in the wee hours, But when I can’t sleep the exercise is great, It gives me strength and power… A body that is inactive is not good for the mind and soul, As we age we must remain active and not become lazy, The aches and pains always disappear when I exercise, My mind avoids “oldtimers” and becomes sharp and not hazy…

At Timber Point Elementary School, art teacher Christina Spera and music teacher Kathy Carter collaborated to celebrate Chinese New Year – the Year of the Snake – with students from the first-grade classes of Vanessa DiPalma, Jennifer
Uss and Josette Welton. During art class, the students created and decorated snakes while discussing the meaning and traditions of the 15-day holiday, which began this year on Feb. 10. In music class, the first-graders listened to
traditional Chinese music and learned Chinese New Year songs, accompanied by instruments such as the gong and cymbals. Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax

Celebrating Service
The Town Board this week hosted a ceremony honoring some of our longest serving firefighters from 11 local Fire Departments. Long time firefighters who have dedicated 50, 60 or 70 years of volunteer service were invited by Islip officials to be publicly honored for their commitment to safe neighborhoods. Collectively, the honorees have more than 1,245 years of volunteerism in fire service. Councilman Steve Flotteron welcomed the honorees and the hundreds of firefighters who came e to support their fellow members. The firemen came from almost every volunteer Fire Department in the Town and each was given a Maltese cross plaque from the Town officials as a thank you for their dedication. “In recent years this traditional Islip town ceremony was forgotten, but this Town Board felt a need to resurrect it to give these men the recognition
they deserve for their halfcentury of service,” said Councilman Flotteron. The honorees came from all walks of life, many of whom joined their local departments when they were still teenagers. In the early 1960’s, when the youngest of the honorees would have joined their department, Islip’s population was roughly 173,000; today it is over 330,000. The oldest honoree in attendance, Edward Kennelly of the Bayport Fire Department, joined at a time when Islip’s population was just 52,000. “Although they have seen Islip transform and change over of the years, their commitment to their fellow residents has remained,” said Supervisor Tom Croci. Complete List of Honorees (for 50 years of service unless noted otherwise): · Bay Shore Fire Department: William Murray; John Trocchio. · Bayport Fire
Department: Albert Wageli, Jr. (70 years); Edward Kennelly (70 years); Frank Meyer (60 years); Clarence Rosche; Frank Norton; George Sutherland. · Brentwood Fire Department: Donald Leun; William Feely. · East Brentwood Fire Department: Samuel Klee. · East Islip Fire Department: John O’Keefe. · Great River Fire Department: Henry Liebbrandt (60 years); Rudy Koubek (65 years). · Hauppauge Fire Department: G. Warren Holtje. · Islip Fire Department: Ronald W. Pfuhl; James Galletto. · Lakeland Fire Department: John Lombardo; Rudy Hanak (70 years); Raymond Stultz Sr. · West Islip Fire Department: Louis Caggioni; William Troy. · West Sayville Fire Department: Edward Slavik.
Volunteer Recognized
East Islip Middle School eighth-grader Victoria Goldfader was recently honored for her exemplary volunteerism with a President’s Volunteer Service Award. The award, presented by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards on behalf of President Barack Obama, recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of time in order to serve their communities and their country. Goldfader participated in the Spirit of Community program this
year as a representative of East Islip Middle School, donating an extensive number of hours to the endeavor. Sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the Reston, Va.-based National Association of Secondary School Principals, the Spirit of Community Awards program honors students across America for outstanding community service activities. More than 370,000 young persons have been considered for these awards – judged on such criteria as personal
initiative, creativity, effort, impact and personal growth – since the program’s 1995 inception. Principal Mark Bernard presented Goldfader with the President’s Volunteer Service Award certificate and a letter from President Obama at a celebratory breakfast held at the middle school on February 26th. She was accompanied by her parents, David and Nancy Goldfader. Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax

RAINBOW HAIR - Kindergartners at Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School had fun participating in the school’s recent Rainbow Hair project. Art teacher Dana Belfiore and music teacher Malgorzata Strzelecka composed a special “Rainbow Hair” song for the children to sing during music class, and they created rainbow hair paintings in art. This vibrant cross-curricular project was designed to help the students learn about the order of the colors in a rainbow as well as how to read color words in class. Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax

Legislator Tom Muratore recently attended the Suffolk County Drug Treatment Court’s Graduation Ceremony, held at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip. Drug Treatment Court is a specialized part of the Suffolk County District and County Criminal Courts. It is offered to those who have a drug and/or alcohol addiction, and have been arrested
on misdemeanor or felony charges. The program’s goal is to bring effective intervention to individuals caught within the cycle of substance abuse and crime. One of the requirements includes appearing before the Presiding Judge while following their individual treatment plan. “I was happy to attend the Drug Court Graduation again, stated Legislator Muratore. “With
drug addiction and drugrelated crimes at an alltime high, it is important to encourage and support the individuals who have persevered through this difficult program to turn their lives around. For information about the Suffolk County Drug Court and eligibility requirements, please contact Project Director Edward Gialella at 631.853.5435.

Go Red Luncheon A Success
More than 900 people from across Long Island joined a “movement” on Wednesday, February 13th, by attending the hugely successful American Heart Association Go Red For Women Luncheon at The Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement encouraged everyone in attendance to “Make It Our Mission” to help save lives and take charge of their cardiovascular health and share the life-altering and life-saving information of the day with women they know. The 2013 American Heart Association Go Red For Women Luncheon is nationally sponsored by Macy’s and Merck. The North Shore LIJ Health System is the Cities Go Red Sponsor. The color red was everywhere from women’s dresses to men’s ties. This
year’s 12th Annual Go Red For Women Luncheon honorees were Karin Caro, CEO, BluChip Marketing & Owner, Arrow Security; Laura Palacios, V.P., Group Director, Investments, Signature Securities and Emma Q. Li, Chairperson, A&Z Pharmaceutical, Inc. Nancy Lieberman, Esq., Farrell Fritz, P.C. is chair of the luncheon and Dr. Jean Cacciabaudo, Chief of Cardiology at Southside Hospital and Dr. Stacey Rosen, V.P. Katz Institute For Women’s Health are the Medical Co-Chairs. The honorees were committed to raising support and creating awareness about heart disease and stroke especially as it pertains to women. Lauren Scala, Reporter for WNBC 4 New York was emcee. Attendees also heard Samara Tetenbaum, heart survivor, share her experience. The networking portion of this year’s luncheon was the most successful to date.
During this time, attendees were able to view and bid on silent auction items and purchase tickets for the hundreds of fabulous prizes that were available. Cardiovascular disease is the number one health threat facing women today. For Go Red For Women information call the American Heart Association at 1.888. MY.HEART or visit www. goredforwomen.org.

Operation SPLASH On Saturday, March 16th, volunteers from Freeport’s Operation SPLASH will board boats and head out on our South Shore bays, to battle the debris and destruction that Super Storm Sandy left behind. A SPLASH armada of a dozen boats will ferry volunteers to remote islands as they donate their morning to help clean up the local bays. With the enormous amount of debris this year, many more volunteers and monetary donations are needed. Last year, in three hours, a record 350 volunteers filled a 42 foot long barge six feet deep with shoreline trash. Volunteer Captain Joseph Pignataro reported that his crew hauled back a bathtub, half a boat, a broken jet ski, a lot of lumber, tires and at least 50 bags of trash. This year the amount to be picked up is even more staggering. Since Sandy, Operation SPLASH boats have seen
the devastation first hand, and have already started the clean-up process, removing large lumber, pilings, propane tanks, damaged docks and dock Styrofoam - all from just the local waterways. The amount of debris resting on our bay islands for this year’s clean-up, OpSPLASH23, will be more of a challenge, and greater assistance is welcome. “The bad news is that Super Storm Sandy has undone most of the great work our volunteers have done over the last 22 years,” said Rob Weltner, President of Operation SPLASH. He continued, “The good news is, we Long Islanders love our bays and beaches and will rise to the challenge before us, and make them pristine again.” To volunteer, please gather at the old Freeport Museum, 202 Woodcleft Avenue in Freeport at 9 a.m. on March 16th (rain date March 17th).
Volunteers should dress for the weather of the day. Waterproof boots and work gloves are strongly suggested. For safety reasons, no sneakers are allowed. Children must be at least 12 years old to participate and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. To make a tax-deductable donation to Operation SPLASH, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, please visit www. OperationSPLASH.org or send a check to PO Box 228, Freeport, NY 11520 or call 516.378.4770.

Of Keynotes & Conquering Fears By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Giant sigh of relief. I did it. I delivered a 20 minute (well, more like 10-minute) keynote address in front of roughly 100 high school journalism students and former professors. And I survived. What’s the big deal, you ask? Given that my profession consists mainly of the written word, the spoken word has always presented a bit of a problem for me. It’s not so much a weak point as a giant source of anxiety. Give me something to read, and I’m probably going to race through it and a relatively low volume, barely glancing up. All words will be pronounced correctly, with proper inflection and expression, but it will be over before you know it – and there had better be a powerful microphone handy. Ask me to ad lib and simply speak off the top of my head in front of a group of people – be it 3 or 3,000 – and, well, let’s just say most people know not to even ask. Granted, I have gotten much better at this. Back in high school, I used to dread the words “Oral
Presentation” on any syllabus, and would work myself up into a frenzy of sorts in the days and hours leading up to said presentation. Usually, it came off fairly well; but there were definitely a handful of occasions when my ill-advised attempts to toss the notecards and “wing it” went awry. Suddenly, I would lose all track of what I was saying, where I was going with my “point” (more like tangent) and how on earth to get back on track. Of course, seeing dozens of your fellow classmates staring blankly back at you never helped the situation either. Being a Journalism major in college, I’m sure you can all imagine how thrilled I was to learn that public speaking would be a large part of the curriculum. There was even an entire Oral Communication course I was required to take…what luck! All joking aside, I did learn to slow it down a bit, enunciate, project, make eye contact (well, occasionally anyway) and – dare I say it – even to ad lib a bit from time to time. Not too much. Just enough.
When I was first asked to deliver the keynote for the LIU Post Media Arts Best Of High School Journalism Awards, all those nerves came flooding back. Memories of my valedictory address in high school, complete with my Guidance Counselor asking, “Um, Jamie? Do you need gum or a mint or something? You look like you’re going to be sick…” just prior to my getting ready to go on stage seemed fresh. But that was almost thirteen years ago. A lot has changed. People grow. They overcome their fears. Those once-impossible tasks seem suddenly attainable. In fact, that was the overall reaction of the high school students to my keynote address – Wow, we can do this too. She was just like us, and look what she’s achieved… The dream can become a reality. That, I think, was the greatest compliment anyone could hope to receive. If, by getting over my fear of public speaking and being able to convey my message, I was able to influence even one high school student to pursue his/her dream of becoming a journalist… well, that’s the biggest reward of all.

of movement, and the importance of being healthy. They discuss self advocacy and the significance of advocating for themselves and other individuals with disabilities. According to Breslin, “The rehearsals have become quite a social event. The group learns new tunes and practices mastered songs. They also create their own sets and in some cases design their own costumes. Each person gets to see how they can contribute to the success of the group. Ultimately, all of these activities help to build self esteem, foster a sense of community, and make for one terrific show!”

Scouts of all ages will be going door to door in the coming weeks to ask for food. Their goal will be to collect more than 85,000 pounds of food donations that will be distributed to food pantries, soup kitchens, and charitable organizations that feed the hungry across Long Island. The Boy Scouts of America has a history of service to the community. Every Scout makes it a part of his daily life to do a good turn. This year, Long Island’s pantries and
soup kitchens have been hard hit by the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy. Immediately following Super Storm Sandy, the Boy Scouts of America in Suffolk County mobilized to collect food, blankets, clothing and cleaning supplies to be delivered to affected residents. Every March, the Boy Scouts of America in Suffolk County holds a food drive to help the pantries restock after the hard winter months and passing holidays. This
March 23rd, Scouts across Long Island will collect and distribute food donations. Residents should be on the lookout for collection flyers and bags in their neighborhood, or contact a Boy Scout Troop or Cub Scout Pack in their area to find out where they can donate non-perishable goods. For information on where you can bring food donations, please contact the Boy Scouts of America in Suffolk County at 631.924.7000, ext. 110.
Ambulance Corps Honored
The Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps (SBVAC), a 90-member all-volunteer student-led emergency response unit, was honored as the Collegiate EMS Organization of the Year for 2012-2013 at the 20th Annual National Collegiate EMS Foundation (NCEMSF) conference held in Washington, DC, from February 22nd-24th, 2013. SBVAC was selected from more than 100 collegiate EMS organizations across the nation. Founded in 1970 by a small group of university students, SBVAC is a New York State-certified ambulance corps that has grown into a collegiate EMS agency that provides one of the highest standards of emergency response care in the state. SBVAC primarily serves the Stony Brook University campus and is regularly utilized as
an EMS resource for the surrounding communities. SBVAC services an average daily population in excess of 30,000 people, including more than 8,000 campus residents. They responded to nearly 1,300 calls last year. “We’re very excited about the award,” said Frankie Rivera, SBVAC President, and a Stony Brook University senior double-majoring in sociology and women’s studies. “This award is timely and well deserved for our members who have answered numerous calls throughout very challenging times this past fall and winter,” he said, referencing Superstorm Sandy and Winterstorm Nemo, two severe weather events that have pounded the region. “It’s great for SBVAC and the campus community, as national recognition helps to get
our name out to the EMS world on a larger scale.” Former SBVAC Chief (2000-02) and Stony Brook alumnus (’02) Joshua Moskovitz, MD, MPH, was also recognized at the NCEMSF conference receiving the President George J. Koenig Jr., DO, Service Award. Dr. Moskovitz is currently an Emergency Medicine physician at North Shore University Hospital. Previously, SBVAC received the “Striving for Excellence” Award at the 2001 NCEMSF annual conference; the Suffolk County EMS Agency of the Year Award (2002); the New York State EMS Agency of the Year Award (2003) by the New York State Department of Health’s Bureau of Emergency Services; and a first-place finish at the 2011 NCEMSF Advanced Life Support Skills Competition.

“Children are the future of our country and no matter who you are or where you’re from, we all have the responsibility to protect them,” Walsh said. “We are forever grateful to Charles Wang and the New York Islanders for sharing our commitment. Last season’s event at the Islanders game was a huge success in raising awareness and funds for NCMEC. I plan on putting my undefeated record on the line and seeing another big Islanders victory, both on and off the ice.” The mission of NCMEC
is to combat the issue of missing and sexually exploited children and the significance of this should not be lost. An estimated 800,000 children are reported missing each year and children are sexually victimized every day with most of these children never disclosing the abuse to anyone. Clearly, this is a growing issue that needs additional attention. “It is crucial that we do everything possible to make sure our children are safe,” Islanders Owner Charles Wang said. “The fans who came and

Making A Mark
Islip High School junior Bryan Ramirez was honored for his exemplary volunteer service with a state-level Certificate of Excellence from the 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. Presented annually by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the awards program honors young people across
America for outstanding community service activities. Bryan was honored for his work in creating and organizing “Thrill the World @ Islip.” The event, which has been held the last three years, aims to break the world record for the largest simultaneous “Thriller” dance while collecting food and monetary donations for charity. Since its inception three years ago, “Thrill the
World @ Islip” has raised more than $6,000 and 800 pounds of food. In addition to his Certificate of Excellence, Bryan has qualified for the President’s Volunteer Service Award. This award recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country.
100 Days Down Superstorm Sandy and snowstorm Nemo may have pushed back their celebration by a few days, but that did not stop the students at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School from recognizing the 100th
day of school on February 22nd. In preparation for the day, the students completed projects incorporating100 objects. Their creations ranged from forming a snowman out of 100 cotton balls to
spelling out “CRES 100” with 100 puzzle pieces. Throughout the 100th day, the students participated in various English, math and art lessons centered on the number 100.

Showcasing their knowledge and creativity, fourth-graders in Christine LeMaire’s class at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School created biography puppet book reports. As with a typical biographical book report, the students were
responsible for reading a non-fiction book and writing a book report on the person’s life. However, for Mrs. LeMaire’s class, they also created a puppet representing their chosen person and presented the puppet to the class during their oral presentation. As
a special treat, the students performed a puppet show for parents. Famous lives and faces on display for the biography puppet book reports included Derek Jeter, Harry Houdini, King Tut and Elvis Presley.
is due last year’s student editors, Theresa Chu (Cornell, ’16) and Keaira Dupuy (Sophie Davis, BS/ MD Program ’19), who worked tirelessly to put the magazine together during off periods and hours after school. Thanks, too, to all the truly talented artists and writers of Bay Shore High School who submitted their work for publication, and to the
incredible BSHS teaching staff for the constant guidance, inspiration and encouragement they offer their students day in and day out. Copies of the 2012 Writers’ Block are available in Room 310 and submissions for the 2013 edition are now being accepted, up until March 22nd, in person or via email (mpasca@ bayshoreschools.org). On February 7th, Bay Shore Gardiner Manor School hosted its 17th Black History Month Celebration, an annual event featuring presentations by prestigious AfricanAmericans who have made significant contributions to their chosen field. This year’s celebration featured some of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first
African-Americans allowed to fly planes with the US military during World War II. Students crowded into the Gardiner Manor gymnasium to listen to various presentations about careers and education in a round robin format. After set intervals, the bell rang and students would rotate to another speaker. Many thanks to all the

PHANTOM PERFORMANCE - East Islip Middle School’s Tri-M Music Honor Society experienced the magic of Broadway while on a February 6th field trip to see Phantom of the Opera at the iconic Majestic Theater. During their visit to Manhattan, the student-musicians also enjoyed lunch at the Hard Rock Café and went for a ride on the Toys R Us Times Square indoor Ferris wheel.
“East Islip High’s student council made the school a wonderful place to be on Valentine’s Day,” said adviser Frances Li. Songs, flowers, chocolate kisses and heart-shaped lollipops were delivered with a smile to delighted students and staff. “We took preorders for singing grams, flowers and candy the week before Valentine’s Day so that sweethearts and friends could surprise or embarrass each other with deliveries to the recipient’s homeroom, cafeteria or office,” explained Li. “People had the choice of five songs, and we even took special orders for
some members.” Reactions from the entire school proved incredibly positive. “Everyone loved the mini “one-minute piece of heaven” when a duet, quartet or entire ensemble walked into a classroom to sing a short piece,” said Li. “It was very moving and enjoyable to see the recipients’ faces and hear the warm welcome of the crowd in the classrooms, cafeterias and offices.” Everyone got into the spirit, including teachers, administrators, students, custodians, clerical staff and secretaries. “Everyone enjoyed the day and it was great to see so many people smiling,” said Li.
“Coworkers sent singing grams to friends, some sent multiple singing grams to one teacher to ‘lighten them up.’ The principal even got one singing gram from the student council and ended up listening to all five songs.” For the student council, many of whose members are heavily involved in the school play and music department, this was an important effort that brought joy and laughter to the entire building. “Boosting morale and making this long hard winter just a little bit more enjoyable is what student council is all about,” said Li.
An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Kay Attends Conference Kay Cameron, owner of Kay Cameron Jewelers in Sayville, recently attended a series of educational seminars, workshops and courses at the Independent Jewelers Organization’s Spring Conference held in Tampa, FL.
Kay and sales associate Maureen Colavito had the opportunity to preview the lines of more than 150 top manufacturers and jewelry designers who exhibited merchandise, some of which is exclusive to IJO members and is not
available from any other stores in this area. Kay then carefully selected many unique and exciting items for the spring season that are sure to delight customers. One of the finds was a selection of 14K white
gold birthstone earrings for girls. “Attending the IJO conference gives us a competitive edge by keeping us up to date with what is going on in our industry” stated Kay.
So You Think You May Have Hearing Loss? Americans love their electronics, smart phones, tablet computers, digital cameras, HDTV’s, e-book readers, MP3 players, and hearing aids (oops, those words ‘hearing aids’ are old, lets re-name them). That’s right – new, sleek, state-of-the-art, life-altering hearing instruments (that’s better). As contoured and futuristic as the most highly styled electronic device – or so discreet that they are virtually invisible – today’s hearing instruments are the high-tech “anti-aging” tool that can help keep lifelong Gen-Xers and baby boomers socially, cognitively and physically active. At its best, technology offers solutions, enriches life, and makes us more efficient. Today’s modern hearing instruments do all three. For more than 34 million Americans hearing loss is part of life. Most frequently, it results from repeat exposure to loud noises – at concerts, nightclubs, sporting events, crowded restaurants, loud workplaces and so on. In many ways, hearing loss is the unintended by-product of life fully lived—that is, before we knew better about how to protect our hearing in such noisy environments. But when ignored and left unaddressed, hearing loss robs from life. It isolates, it debilitates, and it diminishes quality of life and it even takes a toll on financial well being, by cutting into earnings potential. Perhaps, most notable, unaddressed hearing loss creates barriers and unnecessarily strains even the best of relationships. But listen up now! It doesn’t have to, and it shouldn’t. The overwhelming majority of people with hearing loss can benefit from hearing instruments. Eight out of ten
hearing instrument users say they are satisfied with the changes that have occurred in their lives, specifically, due to their hearing instruments – from how they feel about themselves to the positive effects hearing instruments have on their social and work lives. High-performance technology and style have merged with durability and ease-of-use when it comes to today’s hearing instruments. The options are so varied, in fact, that there is an attractive solution for just about anyone; today’s high-tech hearing aids can be discreet or as visible as you like. Top designer’s offer styles that appeal to the fashion conscious, the trendsetter, partygoer, the intellectual, or sports enthusiast. Now designer styles and colors can make the average guy who is tired of arguing with his wife and kids about the volume on the TV feel more comfortable and confident wearing hearing instruments. Simply put, today’s hearing instruments transcend the old-world notion about hiding a condition as common as hearing loss. Whether they sit discreetly unnoticeable inside your ear canal, or wrap aesthetically around the contour of your outer ear like the latest fashion accessory, today’s high-performance hearing instruments selectively amplify life. They do unabashedly send the message: “I’m too young and full of life to stop doing the things I love best.” If you think you or someone you care about is struggling with unaddressed hearing loss ask yourself, or them, these questions:
