is expected to attract close to 400,000 participants. “The affiliation between the Long Island Museum and the Smithsonian Institution is a wonderful opportunity for intellectual exchange,” said Jackie Day, Museum President and CEO. “We are always looking for ways this partnership can benefit the museum and its constituents, and Museum Day Live! offers an opportunity for us to reach new audiences.” Located at 1200 Route 25A in Stony Brook, the Long Island Museum is dedicated to American history and art with a Long Island connection. The Museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The exhibitions featured in this year’s Museum Day Live! event include Long Island, America’s 1950s Frontier featuring iconic
1950s photographs, artifacts and fashions, and William Sidney Mount: Country Scenes for City Patrons, featuring some of Mount’s most well-known genre paintings, typifying the work for which he became famous. For more information about the Long Island Museum, visit longislandmuseum.org or call 631.751.0066. The Museum Day Live! ticket will be available to download at Smithsonian.com/museu mday. Visitors who present the Museum Day Live! ticket will gain free entrance for two at participating venues for one day only. One ticket is permitted per household, per e-mail address. Comings & Goings By: Jamie Lynn Ryan “Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.” Those are the words my eyes fell on as I began this column. How very appropriate. Transitioning from vacation mode back into “real world” work mode has to be one of the more difficult processes known to man. I’m sure there are worse; but, at the moment, this feels like the steepest climb. Forget the 600+ e-mails that piled up while I was away. Never mind the sheer volume of stuff that managed to accumulate in every corner of life over the course of six days. (Six days. Not even a full week!) But what about the intangible “stuff” – all those
subtle things you tend to miss out on during any extended absence? The latest news and gossip… the various comings and goings of others… all those little daily nuances we barely notice… Sometimes, it seems like we are starting from square one, doesn’t it? So much for momentum. I suppose most of the area school children must feel the same way. Just when they get into the groove of lessons and homework and exams – that’s it. Summer vacation. Time to vegetate, and forget all that they’ve learned, over the next two months. Two whole months. Can you imagine being off from work for that long, with the expectation of having to climb back into a set
routine, meet deadlines and – oh yeah – not lose your mind in the process? I can’t. Absence can do many things – clear your head, refresh your motivation, make your heart grow fonder for whatever it is you may be fond of – but one thing it rarely does is eliminate the stress you will inevitably face upon your return. No one has managed to figure that one out yet. Does this make the absence any less worthwhile? No, I don’t think so. Because, for whatever headache you may be greeted with when you come back, the deep breath you take as you go is one to savor. And we could all use a little calming of the mind.

On Saturday September 29th, The Long Island Museum will open its doors free of charge along with over 1,400 other participating venues for the eighth annual Museum Day Live! This immensely successful program, in which the Long Island Museum will emulate the free admission policy of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, D.C.-based facilities, encourages learning and the spread of knowledge nationwide. Inclusive by design, Museum Day Live! fulfills Smithsonian Media’s mission to make cultural education accessible to everyone. For one day only, the Long Island will grant free access to visitors who download a Museum Day Live! ticket at Smithsonian.com. Last year’s event drew over 350,000 museum-goers nation-wide, and this year’s Museum Day Live!

For the first time in more than a decade, Long Island Opera is returning with live-staged opera productions in Nassau and Suffolk counties, beginning with a September 15th performance of George Bizet’s Carmen at Guild Hall in East Hampton. The two-hour production, which will start at 8 p.m., is a full-staged costumed performance with piano that will be led by Music Director Fabio Bezuti and star Long Island native Kara Cornell in the title role. A mezzo-soprano, Cornell, who hails from Smithtown, has performed throughout the United States and abroad. She has sung leading roles with Union Avenue Opera in St. Louis, Opera Theater of Pittsburgh, St. Petersburg Opera in Florida, Center City Opera in Philadelphia, and, New York's Mosaic-Arts, Capital Opera, Northport Opera, Smithtown Center for the Performing Arts, Hubbard Hall, Stony Brook Opera, Musaic Concert Series and Metropolis Opera. Cornell, who has played Carmen professionally before, is looking forward to playing the “sultry, sexy gypsy” in her first Long Island Opera production. “Not only am I looking forward to finally getting perform back on my own turf, but Carmen is one of my favorites,” she said. Carmen will also star tenor David Guzman as Don Jose; baritone Eric McKeever as Escamillo; bass Christian Zaremba as Zuniga; soprano Elise Brancheau as Micaela; baritone Robert Aaron Taylor as Moralès; soprano Margaret Meyer as Frasquita; and mezzosoprano Elizabeth Pojanowski as Mercédès with baritone Thaddaeus Borne and tenor Donald Groves playing the part of the smugglers. Long Island Opera’s singers hail the United States, Colombia, France, Italy, Mexico, Germany and Russia, and have performed with national
and international opera companies including the Metropolitan Opera, Houston Opera, LA Opera, New York City Opera, and at various festivals throughout the United States. “We are very excited about the talent we have this season,” said Long Island Opera’s Executive Director Joy Berta. Long Island Opera, which incorporated as a 501(c)3 in 1961 and recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, is the oldest opera company in existence on Long Island. In the beginning, Long Island Opera performed a handful of operas throughout Nassau County but by the mid1980s its repertory had flourished and Long Island Opera acquired the props, sets and costumes, along with scores to over two-dozen operas and operettas. In August 2009, Berta, an opera singer herself joined the company as Executive Director with the ultimate goal of bringing captivating, high-quality, fully-staged operas back to Long Island. Over the last four years, Berta has dedicated her time and talent to revive the company, promoting, organizing and producing performances throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties in an effort to bring opera back to Long Island. “We want Long Islanders to share with us the wonderful experience of live opera performances right here on Long Island,” said Berta adding, “We understand our audience is key to our success. It is their support, patronage, and enthusiasm that will help us thrive as Long Island’s Opera company.” Long Island Opera’s 2012-2013 season will also include performances of Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto on October 6th and Giacomo Puccini’s La Boheme, featuring the Children’s Orchestra Society, on April 7th, 2013 at Molloy College’s
Madison Theatre in Rockville Centre. “Long Islanders don’t have to travel to the city to experience great opera,” Berta said. “We are bringing live opera performances to Long Island with an increased vitality and energy for Long Islanders to enjoy through this magnificent art form.” She added, “With every performance, our goal is to captivate the audience; we tell the stories the great composers intend us to experience through their music.” Tickets for Carmen are $75 (limited VIP reserved seating and pre-show wine reception); $35 (orchestra); $25 (balcony) and $10-$15 (student). Contributors who make a $150 donation to Long Island Opera will receive two Supporter tickets to any one opera of the 20122013 season along, admission to the wine reception and an exquisite Italian opera print; for a $250 donation, contributors will receive two VIP tickets with above benefits plus preferred seating and backstage access. To purchase tickets or make a donation, visit www.LongIslandOpera.org or call 631.772.9544. Contributions to Long Island Opera are taxdeductible to the extent allowed by law. For additional information, e m a i l events@longislandopera.o rg. “Opera has a bright future here and we will continue to bring the world’s greatest operas to Long Island,” said Berta. “All we need is an audience and we know there are a multitude of opera lovers on Long Island – some of them may not know it yet.” Cornell agreed, saying, “Long Island Opera is putting on productions that appeal to the masses. Why not come out and support your local arts program? Just give it a try?”

I am so disappointed in the response - or, should I say, lack of response - by the town of Smithtown to the slaughter of close to 28 cats (my previous number of 15 was incorrect) at the town shelter. I was told by an exasperated office worker that the phone in Supervisor Vecchio’s office was ringing off the hook and that Supervisor Vecchio “wasn’t going to do anything about the shelter.” She refused to give me her name. Supervisor Vecchio did not return my phone call. Calls were sent right over to the shelter and, depending on when you called, you received the following excuse: “yes, rescue organizations were called,” or “the cats were sick.” Neither of those excuses were true. However, if shelter director G. Beatty found the shelter was overcrowded or he needed to “clean up the shelter” due to an official visit, all avenues to save lives should have been explored: adoption events (there were none)...contacting our wonderful rescue organizations (none received a call). Readers, what steps do you think the public should take to effect change at the Smithown Shelter? Please send me your comments. Readers, if you are trying to volunteer at the Hempstead Town Animal Shelter or are “on hold” awaiting orientation, please send me an e-mail. The animals are languishing in their cages as they continue to wait for the animal shelter to get its act together.

Fall Sports Underway
East Islip High School’s fall sports program revved into action with practices on August 27th, ready for a new season of challenges and championships. On the athletic agenda are boys and girls crosscountry, boys varsity golf, boys varsity and JV soccer, varsity and JV cheerleading, varsity and JV field hockey, girls varsity gymnastics, girls varsity and JV soccer, girls varsity and JV tennis, girls varsity and JV volleyball, and varsity and JV football. Girls varsity volleyball coach Stacie Wixted is very pleased with this year’s lineup. “The team has eight returning players and is looking to do some damage in the playoffs this year,” said Wixted. “Brianna Heffernan, rookie of the league last year, is becoming an all-around volleyball player and will be hitting outside. Libero Vanessa Marques lets nothing hit the ground and should be in the running for defensive player in Suffolk County. Cathy Marku will take over the middle and is a blocking machine. Mariah Cullen, a new captain, has stepped up to the challenge of playing middle, a new position for her, and she has the speed to quicken our offense. Brianna Baier is a defensive specialist who we will count on to serve up some aces for us. Hannah Reilly will be our
secret weapon out of the right side blocking and hitting for us. Sarah Varnot and Kelsey Felicia will be our other two team captains and we look to them for consistent play and leadership. They are both excellent all-around players and we expect great things from them on the court this season. We have added freshman Hether Zenk, sophomore Megan Munn and junior Danielle Drywa to round out the squad, and I know that they will add depth to our team.” After tough tryouts, the boys varsity golf team for the 2012 season was selected. “This year we will be playing in a new league and facing great teams such as Sayville and Bayport-Blue Point,” noted coach Chris Robertson. “We will be looking to repeat as league champions and have retained many of last year's starters. Keep an eye out for team members Paul Caliguri, Frank Argenti, AJ Carracino and Hunter Ingram.” The girls cross-country team will open its season against Bay Shore on September 11th at Sunken Meadow State Park, led by its captains, seniors Kelsey Fryer and Grace Revello. According to coach Steve Brown, the team’s other key runners are freshman Anya Schmitt, juniors Alison Gallagher and Kayla Murphy, and seniors
Niamh Ashe, Emily Fusco and Grace Revello. “We are looking forward to a great season,” said girls JV soccer coach David Lake. “The team is looking very strong and is working extremely hard to eventually get to the varsity level. I believe the varsity team will be very successful and we will be of great help to them in the future.” Swim coach Marguerite Gomez is still working on her roster, as the swim team starts later than the other fall teams due to the team being independent. Gomez cited Julia Llewellyn (a state qualifier last year) as a swimmer to watch. East Islip’s varsity football squad began practicing on August 16th, a bit earlier than the other teams. The Redmen are looking to return to the county championship game for the second year in a row. “I would like to wish all of our fall varsity and JV teams the best of luck this upcoming season,” said Stephen Restivo, the district's director of health, physical education and athletics. “I appreciate all of the hard work that our coaches and student athletes put in each and every day.” Photo by: Greg Fasolino
students marched into the library to the familiar strains of “Pomp and Circumstance,” followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and speeches from Principal William Brennen and Superintendent of Schools John J. Raffone, Assistant Superintendent for Business Carl Fraser, Director of Humanities Sarajean Anderson, and Director of Careers and Student Services Israel Malinowitzer. Brennen told the
graduates to be proud of their achievement and that what mattered most is that they graduated from East Islip High School, not when the commencement took place. He then gave his usual “old Irish blessing,” telling them, “Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.” President Ken Cronin duly presented each of the new alumni with a diploma, and without further delay, the informal celebrations began. School’s In Session created an array of emotions for many of the students and teachers. With their new backpacks and lunchboxes, kindergarten students at Wing Elementary School were welcomed to the district and given the opportunity to meet their teachers and

administrators, teachers and support staff,” remarked Superintendent of Schools John J. Finello. “All of the East Islip schools are in good standing and have a fine academic program in place for our students. We applaud and are proud of the efforts of all of our faculty, staff and parents.” “Congratulations to Dr. Belz, Mr. Brennen, their staff and students on this achievement,” added East Islip Board of Education President Ken Cronin. classmates, while across town seniors at the Islip High School reunited with friends and favorite staff members after a long summer, ready to embark on their final journey within the Islip School District.
On Tuesday, August 28th, Bay Shore Middle School held its annual Summer Orientation from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. First, incoming students entered a balloon-filled gymnasium and met their new SCHOOL’S IN SESSION - Islip School District Superintendent of Schools Susan guidance counselors. Two schools in the East Islip School District – East Islip High School and Timber Point Elementary School – were named “Reward Schools” in an August 30th announcement by the New York State Education Department. The high school and Timber Point are two of 250 schools in 164 school districts in New York to receive this recognition for the past school year. According to the Education Department, Reward Schools are those that have either made the most progress or that have the highest achievement

For eight seniors from East Islip High School’s Class of 2012, the school’s summer graduation on August 29th proved to be an event worth waiting for. Six of the graduates – Joseph Chiusano, John Fusco, David Gomez, Frank James, Jamie Karl and Nicholas Pinzon – attended the commencement ceremony at the high school’s library with their proud families and friends cheering them on. (Christie Azzato and Christian Monk also graduated but were unable to attend.) Clad in red robes and mortarboard caps, the six
