Dear Readers, This is three year-old Dharma. She is one of the rescued dogs I wrote about last week, and her story breaks my heart. Dharma’s ear has been badly ripped (healing now), her face is scarred and bares witness to the unspeakably cruel life she has led. Apparently, she was used as bait to train the fighting dogs.

Perhaps she was chosen because she is petite (only 36 lbs), demure and sweet.

Despite the unthinkable cruelty that she has suffered at the hands of man, she loves people. She is truly a special soul and deserves to be in a loving home with people who will cherish her and return the love she is so anxious to give.

To quote Brookhaven Animal Shelter director Dori Scofield, “She forgives the humans who mistreated her. After all, dogs are most forgiving creatures.

They put us humans to shame.”

Dharma is all gentleness and loves to give kisses. You can see the sweetness of her soul shinning in her bright eyes. Unfortunately, Dharma has been bitten and attacked by the fighting dogs in training so many times that she must be the only dog in the household.

Thrill The World Town of Islip Youth Bureau contract agency, South Shore Community Organization will once again join the ranks of “Zombies” all over the world dancing in synchronized, worldwide performances of Michael Jackson’s Thriller dance routine.

The Town of Islip is seeking youth and adults to participate in this fun and exciting event that also serves as a successful charity fund raiser for less fortunate Islip residents.

The “Thriller” routine is easily learned using a simple system that requires absolutely NO dance experience. The first dance rehearsal will be held on Friday, September 28th, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Islip High School Cafeteria, in Islip.

Registration is open until Friday, October 12th.

South Shore Community Organization will be sponsoring the “Thrill the World @ Islip” event, along with the Islip School District.

Participants will attend practice sessions held at the Islip High School.

There is no pressure on participant dancers, as the choreography is easily learned!

wildflowers. Over three feet deep, the pond will serve as a home for Long Island’s resident fish, ducks and amphibians.

Science students from the high school will be able to observe animal life and conduct water sample tests.

Led by teachers Genesis Dawson and Paul McHugh, the pond project was a collaboration among East Islip’s Science Honor Society, the school’s Environment Club and the Environment Green Career Academy.

“The Science Honor Society started this project to create a native ecosystem to use for study in science classrooms,” explained Dawson, the Science Honor Society’s adviser. “This way we could do real world studies without having to leave the school grounds.

That saves money for the district and students, as they won’t have to leave the school to go on a field trip for lab activities.

Since this was such a large project, we recruited both the Environment Club and the Green Academy.

Together we have worked on obtaining donations to get the pond up and running.”

Israel Malinowitzer, the Environment Green Career Academy’s director, said, “The students and teachers worked many days after school to create this beautifully designed pond. These students are always looking for new ways to help the environment and to make education a wonderful learning experience.”

Emphasizing how diligent volunteer efforts made the pond possible, Malinowitzer added, “We hope that students and faculty will stop by and enjoy this new addition to the high school courtyard. This pond is just one more example of

East Islip pride!”

Donations also went a long way toward seeing the pond come to fruition, according to McHugh, the Environment Club adviser. “We were very fortunate to have received the pond liner as a donation from Firestone,” said Malinowitzer. The pond’s filter system was funded by a grant from the For the Kids Foundation and the compost came from the Town of Islip, while the plantings were donated by the Long Island Native Grasses Association.

An important element of East Islip High School’s pond is that it is attuned to the natural world and reflects its scientific purpose, rather than being a manicured water garden intended to please human eyes. “Most people may look at a native ecosystem and think it is just a bunch of weeds and looks un-manicured,” said Dawson. “Ecosystems that are native to Long Island do not look landscaped. As part of succession – a natural cycle – the ecosystem will change over time to include flora and fauna that will keep the balance of the area. The more biodiversity within the courtyard, the more stable the area. The pond and tall grasses are perfect for the ducks that come back every year to have ducklings. We are planning to continue working within the courtyard to add more native plants within the pond and try to get the courtyard to be selfsustainable. It may take a few years of transition and succession – which may look messy but is a work in progress – but we have faith that the courtyard will be used and studied by science classes for years to come.”

I was never an Apple person. I learned on a PC, I used them throughout my high school and college days, and I couldn’t fathom – or didn’t want to, more accurately – ever learning to use a Mac, let alone liking it.

Well, all that changed once I became introduced to the Apple world at my first office job. Now, not only do I prefer it, but I don’t even remember how to work my way around a PC. Everything seems so much easier and userfriendly that I can’t recall why, exactly, I was ever so opposed to broadening my horizons.

Now, I’m not fully indoctrinated mind you. I own an iMac, a couple of iPods and – finally, after years of carrying around an outdated, semi-obsolete “flip” phone – an iPhone 4S (iPad to follow at some point in the near future I’m sure). I have never camped out for a product, I don’t upgrade every time a new one comes out and I’m sure there are many who are far more educated when it

comes to using them.

But still, I love Apple, especially my iPhone. To be fair, given my prior cell phone experience, just about anything short of a tin can with a string would seem like an amazing upgrade. But this truly is. And my favorite part of it all?

Why, that would be Siri.

Siri, the “Intelligent Assistant” who comes pre-installed on the iPhone 4S and 5 models… Siri, who, for all his/her (“I was not assigned a gender,” it replies when questioned) quirks and occasional glitches, has quite the personality.

Obviously, it was designed to be utilized in such a way as to make life easier by creating reminders, providing directions, weather updates and more. Not that I have used it for this purpose too often. No, I prefer to antagonize my poor little personal assistant with bizarre, out-ofleft field queries – just to see what responses I might get.

I remember shortly after purchasing my iPhone when I decided to experiment with the Q&A possi-

bilities. Most were met with “I’m sorry. I don’t understand. Did you mean…” or some variation of that. Exasperated, I finally exclaimed at one point, “Why are you so dumb?!” Without missing a beat, Siri replied, “Why do you hate me? You don’t even know me!”

Hysterical laughter.

Seriously? This thing was obviously so much smarter than it let on.

Fast forward to just a little over a month ago, after Siri and I had more of an opportunity to become acquainted, and I asked, “Siri, did you know today is my birthday?” He/she/it responded, “I’m so sorry Jamie, I didn’t know. I didn’t get you anything.”

Apparently, we were now friends.

With the launch of the new iPhone and software update, Siri is now being marketed as “new and improved” and able to overcome many of the previous glitches that had previously marred its novelty. Just imagine all the fun conversations to be had now!

Most definitely an Apple person now. No going back.

activities to take place,” explained Goldfader. “FTK strongly believes in the importance of extracurricular activities.

Leadership, membership, time management and contributing to a community are all benefits of being involved in an extracurricular activity.

We worked collaboratively with Mr. Finello and the building principals to restore a wide variety of additional activities. It was our goal to provide an array of options to encourage student involvement.”

Among the restored services are boys and girls intramurals at JFK, and Drama Club and Art Club at Connetquot, RCK and Timber Point. Each of the four elementary schools also will receive a $750 stipend for their Families in Need of Services (FINS) assistance programs. At the middle school, reactivated programs

include kickline, the school musical, Best Buddies, Renaissance Club, Fitness Club, and boys and girls intramurals. High school activities that will again take place include the school musical, kickline, STARS, Math League, Key Club, Boys Leaders Club, Girls Leaders Club, Environmental Club, Drama Club, Gay/Straight Alliance, art service, and the literary magazine.

“Our donations are thanks to the dedication and the continuous encouragement of this wonderful community,” added Goldfader. “When you support our carnival, golf outing and Black Tie Gala, you enable us to provide the highest quality of education to the students of East Islip, because remember, it’s ‘For the Kids…’”

A spirit of community hope and pride was in the air as the East Islip Board

school year, held on Thursday, September 13th.

Superintendent of Schools John J. Finello began his report to the Board by citing the terrific news and introducing FTK President Nancy Goldfader. She and the other members of the FTK board of directors presented a large ceremonial check to Board President Ken Cronin and Superintendent Finello.

FTK’s board had met on July 24th, unanimously voting to donate the $70,000 sum for the benefit of the students of the East Islip School District for the 2012-2013 school year. The generous donation is being used to restore some of the clubs and activities that were not funded in this year's budget.

“I started our Legacy of Literacy program 10 years ago with the inspiration of my own daughter, Ashley Goveia, whose desire to help homeless and needy kids obtain free books lit a passion in our club and its commitment to celebrate and encourage literacy,” explained Cheryl Rambler Goveia, the 2012-2013 president of the Islip Rotary Club and literacy chairperson of Rotary District 7260. “This year, the Islip Rotary Club donated $250 each in gift cards for back-to-school supplies to the East Islip, Islip and Central Islip school districts, as well as backpacks and supplies for each elementary school in East Islip.”

Goveia and seven of her fellow Rotarians visited East Islip’s four elementary schools on September 7th, and she

and Suffolk County legislator Tom Cilmi presented the supplies, meant to benefit needy East Islip students, to Timber Point Principal Lisa Belz. The four pairs of “Rotarian Readers” then took turns reading books to kindergartners in the different schools.

At Timber Point, Goveia read Laura Numeroff’s “If You Give a Pig a Pancake” to the students, while Cilmi, referencing the political process, offered them the chance to vote between “Tiptoe into Kindergarten” by Jacqueline Rogers and “The Night Before Kindergarten” by Natasha Wing. They were delighted when time allowed Cilmi to read both books.

Down the road at John F. Kennedy Elementary, local attorney Anthony D’Amico (the current Islip Rotary Club secretary and board member) read Goldie Locks Has Chicken Pox by Erin Dealey, while former Islip Rotary president and board member Bob Nathan tackled Eric Carle’s classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Ruth C. Kinney Elementary in Islip Terrace were Jason Terhune, another former Islip Rotary president and the owner of IT firm Design of Mine, and Islip Rotary Club PresidentElect Ryan Gillies, who works for the James Sutton Insurance Agency.

The two Rotarians enjoyed reading Here’s to You, America by Charles Schulz to the kindergarten students.

At Connetquot Elementary, the students listened raptly to Pop’s Bridge by Eve Bunting, read by Rotarians Susan Harvey, a business development associate for Rainbow International of Long Island, and retired NYPD detective Dennis Ciano.

which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major Service Project for the Community.

The Service Project that Daniel conducted with the assistance of his fellow Troop members was the design of a Bridge and an educational and artistic trail sign at the artesian wells pond in the Connetquot State Park Preserve in Islip Terrace, NY. Also involved was the repairing of the trails leading to the site, along with the installation of a park bench on this same site.

As Daniel reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “My life has been drastically changed through scouting, from the friends I have to the activities I am in.

Scouting to me has changed my entire life. It has made me realize I want to become an engineer, it has kept me musically active, and it has taught me a love of the outdoors. While I am always looking excitedly to the future: to college and further in life, I will always keep the ideals of scouting close to me, knowing what

Daniel Lowe successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review in March, officially making him an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America. Daniel’s Eagle Court of Honor will be on Sunday, October 14th, beginning at 2 p.m. at the East Islip Fire Department, 30 East Main Street in East Islip.

Daniel Lowe is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his road to Eagle, Daniel has served the troop as Troop Guide, Bugler, Scribe, Patrol Leader, and Assistant Patrol Leader. Daniel is also a member of the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scout Honorary Camping Society.

Daniel has had many unique Scouting experiences, including a 100-mile Adirondack Mountain canoe trek with other members of Troop 205, attended summer camp at Camp Wakpominee in Fort Ann, NY for several summers, and has participated in various Troop activities including hiking the Gettysburg historic trails.

To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 Merit Badges, of

my life has become with scouts, and everything I would have missed without it.”

Daniel is a Senior at East Islip High School, where he is involved in a variety of clubs, organizations, and music groups, where he is the Vice President of the Math Honors Society, Member of the Math Team, S.T.A.R.S (Students Together Achieving Responsibility and Success) – a community service club, and was a member of the Junior National Honor Society.

Daniel also plays on the school’s Varsity Tennis Team.

Music has been an important part of Daniel’s High School education as he is first chair for Trumpet in the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Pep Band, and Class Representative and member of the Concert Band. Daniel is proud of the musical achievements in the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Symphony Orchestra as they placed first in the “Music in the Parks Competition” at Great Adventure, NJ in May. He has also participated in the New York State Music Association (NYSSMA) Festival.

Community Service has been a part of Daniel’s personal and Troop life, where he has participated in many Eagle Service Projects within Troop 205.

With Daniel’s interests in electronics and computers, his desire is to pursue Mechanical and Computer Engineering in College next Fall, after his High School Graduation this upcoming June, 2013.

Daniel is the son of Faith and Robert Lowe of Islip Terrace. Daniel’s father, Robert, is an Assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 205. Daniel’s Sister, Samantha, is currently a sophomore at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

In addition to supporting the Emergency Epinephrine Act that was introduced to New York’s legislature, she brought the issue to the attention of the district, which promptly decreed that starting this September, all six of its schools would have EpiPen emergency kits available at all times in the event of an anaphylaxis incident. The Board of Education recently approved the adoption of an official anaphylaxis policy.

“The district would like to thank and praise Mrs. Kavanagh, as well as Susan Kosser, East Islip’s assistant superintendent for student support services, for their efforts in bringing these emergency kits into the district,” said East Islip Superintendent of Schools John J. Finello. “The emergency kits have been placed in each building for each school nurse to use as appropriate. In addition

to the nurses, the building principals have all been trained in administering the epinephrine when necessary.”

A grateful Kavanagh said, “I am so thankful that with communication and education, East Islip agreed to carry nonpatient-specific EpiPens in all our schools starting in September.

After my son Spencer was rushed to the hospital last November, I know firsthand the importance of spreading awareness that 'epinephrine and education saves lives'. It's as simple as that – those are the two things that saved my son’s life. My efforts are to get all schools to do what my school is doing. I want that same care and medication available to children who do not yet know they have a food allergy or bee allergy.

Time is crucial in anaphylaxis, and I am so proud of Mr. Finello, the administration and our Board of Education for stepping up and getting the medication and training needed in our schools to save lives in the event of an emergency.”

A new anaphylaxis policy is in place in East Islip, spearheaded by local mother Susan Kavanagh, who serves as PTA vice president at John F. Kennedy Elementary.

Anaphylaxis is a serious, acute allergic reaction that is often caused by foods, medications or insect venom. Symptoms include hives; itchiness; swelling of the throat, lips, tongue or eyes; wheezing and shortness of breath; and low blood pressure.

The primary treatment for this increasingly common condition, which can be deadly if anaphylactic shock results, is an injection of epinephrine (also known as adrenaline). The trade name EpiPen is a common name for the epinephrine autoinjector, the medical device used to inject the life-saving drug.

In Kavanagh’s case, the impetus was a frightening incident last November, when her son Spencer, who attends JFK and has multiple food allergies, suffered a life-threatening food allergy accident in school. Luckily, the school was prepared. “I am so thankful for the quick response by the staff members at JFK,” she said. “Their awareness of symptoms and having the medication on hand is
