The Brentwood Historical Society has undertaken to restore the Modern Times school house that’s been sitting (sadly) on the Administration building grounds for many years. They are going to need a lot of money for this restoration, and they can’t count completely on our government for grants. If you’re one of those people who have said, “I wish somebody would do something about that!”, here’s your chance to help. Please visit their website, www.brentwoodhis.org, and use the Donate button, or send a tax-deductible donation to Brentwood Historical Society, 34 Second Avenue, Brentwood, NY 11717. Please share this with everyone you can. Let’s show the world our Brentwood spirit!

Concussion of the brain is the very common injury that occurs under different circumstances. It can occur during the simple slip and fall accident, motor vehicle accident, but most commonly it does in sport. Over the last ten years a lot of research was done with an intention to explain why there is much higher incidence of neurological disorders affecting professional sport players. This study eventually revealed that a mild head injury causes pathological processes that eventually may lead to neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s, etc. During the mild head injury or mild concussion of the brain, the symptoms of the actual injury could be transient and brief, and eventually this condition becomes virtually asymptomatic or having very subtle symptoms. Those symptoms could be just a mild headache, excessive fatigue, excessive or lack of sleep, problem with concentration. Since many symptoms of concussion are brief and may not be present on the second or third day after the concussion, it will leave very little tools to help a doctor to determine if the player is ready to go back to play. Current thinking is that optimal recovery of concussed students occurs when there is cognitive, physical, and emotional rest following injury. Additionally, research has shown that 92% of second injuries occur in the first week following the initial injury, and the goal is to allow adequate recovery time before allowing a student to risk re-injury. Pressure to return an athlete before it is safe can be intense from parents and athletes. Primary care physicians are being asked to assist in the process of keeping injured children safe by remaining objective and withholding participation until it is deemed safe with a reasonable degree of medical certainty.
return to school), but we anticipate a similar slow exertional challenge as we see in RTP. The graduated steps begin after the student has a medical clearance to return to academics, and is symptom free off pain killing medicines for a full 24 hours. RTL should be an individualized steady progression with the parent’s checking the child daily for a return of symptoms and alerting you if the student is struggling so you can provide appropriate requests for medical accommodations to the school as needed. Unlike a RTP, the RTL might start at any level and progress at a rate individualized to the student’s needs and tolerance. Steps might be skipped as tolerated and might look something like this: Students with reasonable recovery times typically will get accommodations within the school by the principal. Students with protracted recovery beyond about 10 weeks, a school quarter, are likely eligible for a 504 plan or an IEP, and you might be asked to write a request to support the family at that time.

The Concussion Act of NYS
The Concussion Act of NYS took effect July 1, 2012, and requires schools to: • Educate parents, athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, physical education teachers, and school nurses on concussion, • Remove observed or suspected concussed students from play based on signs and symptoms, • Withhold further participation until evaluated by, and received written and signed authorization to return to activities from a licensed physician. • Obtain physician clearance, and when the athlete has been symptom-free off pain killing medicines for a minimum of 24 hours and allow them to begin a monitored progressive six phase return to play. MAKING A CLINICAL DETERMINATION • Symptoms: somatic (e.g. headache, nausea, dizziness), cognitive (e.g. feeling in a fog), and/or emotional (e.g. liability)
• Behavioral changes: irritability, personality changes • Cognitive impairment: Hard time concentrating, trouble remembering, not feeling themselves, being confused, thinking speed slowed down, taking a longer time to react • Sleep disturbance: drowsiness, insomnia GRADUATED RETURN TO PHYSICAL EXERTION AND ACTIVITY OR RETURN TO PLAY (RTP) This is a six step gradual return to activity. The RTP protocol may not start until an athlete is completely symptom-free for a full 24 hours off pain killing medicines, and must remain symptom-free for 24 hours following each stage before progressing further. RECOVERY Average recovery following concussion is about a week to ten days; protracted recovery with post concussion syndrome is after 21 days. Young teenage girls often have protracted recovery more than any other group. RETURN TO LEARN (RTL) More information will be forthcoming about RTL (cognitive

Another year of Redmen pride was celebrated during East Islip High School’s raucous annual pep rally on September 28th. Once the senior class photo had been taken, the introductions began. After acknowledging the junior varsity athletes in attendance, as well as East Islip's non-school local teams in hockey and rugby, Principal William Brennen turned the mic over to Athletic Director Stephen Restivo and the varsity coaches, who introduced the school's

They say that two of the most taboo topics are religion and politics, subjects that should be avoided at all costs when in mixed company. Before I had my own legitimate opinions on such matters, I have to admit that I never understood what the big deal was. Now I get it. Especially in this day and age, with the advent of social media and the ability to post all sorts of potentially controversial tweets, status updates, photos, videos, etc.… is it any wonder that tensions tend to build to the point of heated disagreements? One day you’re “friends” – the next you’re engaged in a bitter dispute over political ideals. Some things should simply be left for private discourse.
Personally, I have always felt that, as long as your opinion is well informed and based on some sort of intelligent foundation, there should really be no need to defend it. Believe what you believe; just don’t try to impose it upon others. That’s what the politicians are for. Those basic philosophies which make us different are precisely what make our society unique – and interesting. No need to change that. When things take a nasty turn – which they inevitably seem to – whether in the form of written discourse or verbal sparring, that’s when it has gone too far. A little healthy debate is fine, and should be encouraged even. We should all be open to other viewpoints – perhaps, in our own narrow-minded tunnel vision, we may have missed some-
thing valid and eye opening. But merely shoving your unsolicited opinions down someone else’s throat is not only unnecessary, but borders on disrespectful. Voting booths are private for a reason, as are many religious institutions and practices. No one should feel obligated to defend his/her beliefs, so long as they are founded in some sort of informed, grounded philosophy. And if they aren’t, if they are merely based on a handful of regurgitated talking points or hearsay – well then, why would you want to recruit someone so ignorant to your side anyway? Better they are left to their own devices. Simply my opinion. Take it or leave it. {This message was approved by Jamie Lynn Ryan.}

Bracelet Benefit For the fifth consecutive year, Brighton Collectibles will be raising money for Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center’s breast health services. Brighton will contribute $10 for each $50 “Power of Pink” bracelet sold at the Smith Haven Mall, Lake Grove store between September 28th and October 31st. The 2012 limitededition bracelet is a classic
design resembling one of the bracelets in the Brighton line that women have loved collecting. The design is like two bracelets in one, it can be worn with pink-accented links or reversed to wear as an allsilver bracelet. Its dangling heart charm and pink ribbon with touches of light rose Swarovski crystals show support for everyone who has been
touched by breast cancer. “This bracelet symbolizes hope and raises awareness, each one of us can make a difference when we act together in support of women fighting breast cancer”, said Good Samaritan Hospital’s Breast Health Center Coordinator Bonnie Edsall, RN.

Celebrating 75 Years The Brentwood Public Library will be celebrating a significant milestone 75 years of serving the Brentwood and North Bay Shore communities - on Sunday, October 14th, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. This significant milestone deserves a special day, and everyone is invited to experience the many activities planned for the day. There will be an exciting family magic show by Bob McEntee, a musical interlude by harpist Laura Goldstein, the winners of the library’s anniversary bookmark contest will be announced, and an historical exhibit depicting Brentwood through the years will be on display. In 1937, the community’s first library opened in a cloakroom of the old firehouse on First Avenue. During the following twenty-four years, the library was
located in a former store on First Avenue, the annex of the Brentwood Schools Administration Building, and a small building on the south- west corner of Third Avenue and Fourth Street. In 1961, the Brentwood Public Library was relo- cated to its current site. While the library has remained at 34 Second Avenue for more than fifty years, it has grown and changed to meet the needs of the community. Two major constructions, in 1961 and 1988, and two extensive renovations, in 1978 and 2008, expanded the physical structure providing space for enhanced programs and services. In 1937, the population of Brentwood was approximately 1,500; the library was open ten hours a week; and there was a collection of five hundred books. Today, the population of Brentwood
is in excess of 87,000; the physical library is open seventy-two hours a week and 24/7 through the website; and the collection exceeds 285,500 items. The Brentwood Public Library has truly become the center of the community. It is a place to meet formally or informally, to study and conduct research, to develop job search skills, to learn and be entertained through a myriad of services that were unimaginable just seventy-five years ago. As the library moves forward in a world of technological advances and unprecedented patron growth, the Board of Trustees, Director, Assistant Director, librarians and staff pledge to continue the standards of excellence that have been the hallmark of the Brentwood Public Library since its inception.

Open Houses Scheduled On Sunday, November 4th, from 1 to 3 p.m., Suffolk County Community College will host an Open House for prospective and accepted students at the following campus locations: Ammerman Campus in Selden Babylon Student Center Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood Sagtikos Arts & Sciences Building Eastern Campus in Riverhead - Montaukett Learning Resource Center Faculty and administrators will be on hand to offer detailed information regarding the more than 70 degree programs of study and 30 certificate programs available at the College. Educational and transitional services information for Veterans will also be available at the Open House. Financial aid representatives will discuss the grants and loans process, as well as the many scholarships available at Suffolk.
Members of the admissions staff will be in attendance to guide students and parents through the admissions process and to answer questions. The Open House program also includes useful information for recentlyaccepted students, who will have the opportunity to learn more about placement testing, academic advisement and financial aid. “Whether you have already been accepted to Suffolk County Community College or are a prospective student, making a personal visit to a campus is critical to the college decision making process,” said Joanne E. Braxton, Suffolk’s Dean of Enrollment. “We welcome students and their families to join us at our upcoming Open House, where they will find a dynamic overview of the academic programs and student support services available at the College. They will also have the opportunity
to tour the campus with student guides, who are available to answer questions based upon their own experience as students.” In light of the increased demand for access to community colleges, the best way to secure admission to Suffolk County Community College for the spring 2013 semester is to attend Open House and apply for admission early. The Ammerman Campus in Selden is located on Nicholls Road, north of Exit 62 of the LIE. The Michael J. Grant Campus is located on Wicks Road, south of Exit 53 of the LIE in Brentwood. The Eastern Campus is located on County Road 51, three miles south of the County’s Riverhead Center. Driving directions for all campus locations can be found at: http://www3.sunysuffolk.e du/About/Directions.asp.

Each AP course, which earns college credit for high school students, is graded on a scale of 1 to 5, with 3 being a passing grade. For 2012, East Islip High School can also boast 33 AP Scholars (19 current seniors and 14 who graduated in 2012), who received scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams; 24 AP Scholars

This year the College Board recognized Islip High School senior Montana Prechtl as an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction. To receive this honor, a student must have received an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and score 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. of curriculum that is comparable to material covered at the college level, and students taking AP courses can earn college credit while still enrolled in high school. Each course is graded on a scale of 1 to 5, and students pass their course with a grade of 3 or more. In order to be designated as an AP Scholar with Honor, a student must have received a 3.25 or higher on four or more AP exams in the last school year. Shannon McKenna and Madison Schaefer were

Each morning, Gardiner Manor students recite the Stand Up Pledge: “I will stand up for myself and others by using kind words.”
As an extension of Project Stand Up!, the Stand-Up Kids Character Trait of the Month Program was developed by the GM Character Education Committee. Each month, a particular character trait is emphasized through discussion, literature, and school activities. Additionally, both
students and staff contribute to a bulletin board, sharing how they exemplify the Trait of the Month. On the last day of each month, a Color Up for Character School Spirit Day features students wearing a particular color to show support of the month’s trait.

If you enter the Fifth Avenue playground, you will see children climbing ropes, sliding down a huge slide, and moving up and down a rock wall. Everyone is delighted with the installation of the “Big Toy.” A ribbon cutting
ceremony was held for students on Friday, September 21st. Mrs. Wilson thanked the PFA members for serving on the Playground Committee and for their fundraising efforts, which yielded over $20,000 to supplement the school
district’s contribution. The grounds crew did a great job of dismantling the old playground equipment and measuring and digging for the new playground. The students’ smiles and laughter made everyone’s efforts more than worthwhile.

whom attended 20 hours of training in preparation, attended the inspirational and well-run event. Recognizing that 9th grade can prove a difficult transition year for many, FTD was created to foster awareness, good decision-
making, and reaching out to and acceptance of others. High School Social Worker and event organizer Janine Mazzie said in her opening remarks, “Although we cannot control the things that happen to us, we can
Grant Won drug and/or alcohol use, but may not yet be ready to seek treatment or live a substance-free life. Participants may have experienced personal or professional consequences of their substance use, or may have been arrested for a non-violent low-level offense that involved the use of alcohol and/or illegal substances. The group is also perfect for those who are awaiting placement into inpatient or outpatient chemical dependency treatment. The program is 100% confidential and open to all regardless of ability to pay. Start2Stop participants are required to abstain from any drug or alcohol use while they are enrolled in the program. Those who are unable to remain abstinent during the twelve weeks of sessions are counseled and referred for more intensive treatment. With a well-publicized opiate crisis gripping Long Island and a documented upswing in impaired driving and boating, LICADD Executive Director Dr.
Jeffrey Reynolds says support for Start2Stop comes at the perfect time. “I am grateful to Assemblyman Sweeney for helping us make this program more accessible to local residents before their use of drugs and alcohol accelerates,” he said. “This proactive approach and timely intervention will help make Suffolk County a safer and healthier place.” “Long Island continues to experience a number of well-publicized tragedies due to substance abuse. The Start2Stop program helps participants get control of their substance abuse problem before it escalates into a tragedy. While we need strong laws to deal with the results of DWI and BWI incidents, it is far better to prevent those tragedies from happening in the first place. That’s what this grant is intended to do,” said Assemblyman Sweeney. For more information about Start2Stop, or any of LICADD’s other services, please call 631.979.1700 or visit www.licadd.org.
after partaking in initial “getting to know you” activities. About the day, Ms. Mazzie said, “I hope to challenge them to look at the world a little differently to acknowledge the diversity and differences in others, and embrace those differences by accepting themselves and others exactly as they are. But the biggest takeaway hopefully is this: No matter where they are on life’s journey, they are never alone. There is someone here for them.” Thanks to the vision and diligence of Ms. Mazzie, the Bay Shore High School administrators, the school staff and student volunteers, Freshman Transition Day provided the 9th graders with a solid first step towards a successful four years at Bay Shore High School.
Community Assessment The Children’s Community Head Start and Early Head Start, a federally funded comprehensive early childhood program for income eligible families, recently released the results of its annual community assessment. The assessment measures trends related to poverty, hunger, health, employment and housing status in Suffolk County. The information gathered enabled the Children’s Community Head Start to modify and enhance its programs and to plan services that meet the needs of the community. This year’s community assessment found that families are struggling in suburbia in the wake of the recession taht began in 2007. The county is e x p e r i e n c i n g unprecedented rates of poverty, home f o r e c l o s u r e s , unemployment and high demand for food stamps,
emergency housing and Medicaid. In addition, the Hispanic/Latino population continues to grow, increasing the need for access to programs for English language learners. Suffolk County also reports an increase in the child abuse and maltreatment reports in Suffolk County; perhaps a reflection of economic stress on families and the need for support services. A complete report of the annual community assessment can be found on the program’s website: www.childrenscommunity hs.org. The Children’s Community Head Start and Early Head Starts (CCHS), with centers in Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma, provides services for families residing in 13 school districts in Central Suffolk County. Families are eligible based on household incomes that are below the federal
poverty line. Homeless and foster children, and children with disabilities, are also eligible. In addition to a high-quality and structured classroom experience, children benefit from health and nutrition services, family involvement, parent training and strong relationships with local school districts, thus aiding their transition to Kindergarten. According to the 2009 Long Island Index research report prepared by the Rauch Foundation, early childhood education “prepares children for school, and when provided in a high quality program, it can reduce grade repetition, drop out rates and juvenile delinquency.” The report further explains that high quality programs can lower future costs that the public school would otherwise assume.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is set to receive a $20,000 grant from the NYS Office of Substance Abuse Services to support its addiction services in Suffolk County, thanks to the efforts of NYS Assemblyman Bob Sweeney. Specifically, the grant funds the expansion of LICADD’s Start2Stop program, which provides drug and alcohol information, solutionfocused counseling, peer support and treatment referrals to local residents of all ages. Start2Stop is a professionally facilitated support group that helps participants explore their substance abuse experiences and attitudes about drugs and alcohol, learn more about the biological/social and p s y c h o l o g i c a l consequences of use and understand the impact such use has had, and will have on their lives and relationships. The twelve week psycho-educational program is designed for individuals who have had some involvement with
support necessary to pursue and fulfill individual potential.” Ms. Maier was followed by keynote speaker Hashim Garrett, from Breaking the Cycle. Mr. Garrett was a victim of senseless street violence at the age of 15 and, after a difficult recovery process, dedicated his life to informing youth about conflict resolution through forgiveness. Other presentations included a workshop on the effects of bullying and a roundtable discussion featuring past and present students speaking openly about their experiences with peer pressure, bullying, sexual orientation, death in the family, and difficulties at home. Small Family Groups, each comprised of 15 students and one facilitator, met throughout the day to process reactions to speakers and workshops,

Throughout the day, multiple guest speakers and assemblies were offered to help boost awareness and strengthen leadership skills.
