In support and recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, members of the Islip High School girls cross-country team partnered with the Kings Park High School girls cross-country team to participate in the Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
To raise their funds, each school team held local fundraisers by hosting bake sales, accepting donations from local businesses and selling “Track Down a Cure” tee-shirts. On October 2nd, at their third dual meet of the season, coaches from each team went pink by dying their hair. Together both teams
were able to raise a combined donation of over $1,800. “This was a great and worthwhile fundraiser and both teams hope their donation can help researchers find a cure and better treatments for cancer,” said Islip High School cross-country coach David Claps.

DNA Science Camp
Andrew Loizides, a senior at East Islip High School and aspiring medical studentl, attended a DNA Science camp this past summer at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s DNA Learning Center, the world’s first science center solely devoted to genetics education. Over 14,000 students have participated in Cold Spring Harbor’s DNA camps since they began in 1985.
The DNA Science summer camp provides participants with extensive lab experience with the basic techniques of recombinant DNA, including DNA restriction and ligation, bacterial transformation and plasmid isolation. Young scientists such as Loizides are given the opportunity to perform the entire lab sequence from the acclaimed “DNA Science” textbook, using sophisticated laboratory and computer equipment. A member of East Islip High’s new Medical and Health Technology Career Academy, Loizides plans to put his new genetics knowledge to good use. “Andrew is a young man with a bright future,” said Career Academy director Israel Malinowitzer. “He is planning to pursue a career in the medical field and is currently taking courses in the new Medical Academy that are
both challenging and rigorous. He understands the importance of working hard and giving 100 percent of himself so that he can fulfill his dreams and aspirations. Andrew has visited several colleges over the last few months and is carefully reviewing the schools that offer excellent medical programs. He is a dedicated and responsible young man with a vision for his future.” Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax

Catching Up By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Back in June, when I officially “retired” from dancing, I assumed that with this newfound free time would come the unintended benefit of being able to catch up – watching the hours of TV shows I never seemed to be home for, going through the ever-growing pile of magazines collecting on my desk, or perhaps even tackling a book or two. Well, here we are, four months later, and I have to say – even if I took an entire day off to do the aforementioned things, I would probably barely make a dent. What are we, four weeks into the new TV season? I would say, cumulatively, that
I have about 12 hours or so of unwatched episodes to catch up on. Not that there’s really any point, since one glance at the social media sites pretty much ruins any suspenseful plot twists. And the magazines… well they’re fairly outdated for the most part. Still entertaining, but the list of upcoming events tends to lose some impact when they have all already passed, wouldn’t you say? Books… well, let’s just say that the only time I have managed to read an entire book (at least, since leaving school) is if I take it with me on vacation. Because, let’s face it, the plot tends to lose something when there’s a three-month gap between chapters. It’s amazing that when you
subtract certain obligations from your life, there always seem to be about 20 more that immediately crop up to fill the void. It makes you wonder how it’s even possible to accomplish what you need to. But I suppose we do manage, somehow. We find the time for those things we truly want to do; and we manage to avoid those things we would rather push to the bottom of the list. Simple human nature. Not the most practical or rational of practices, but still – it is how most of us tend to conduct our lives. Perhaps we should all take a page out of one of those unread “self-help” books and adjust our schedules to fill the void with some free time.

drawings and engineering and affiliated paperwork for state approval was donated by the BBS Architectural Firm of Patchogue, and the materials themselves were given by Bay Shore Schools vendors at almost cost. Additionally, the electrical work and required labor were donated by Carney Electric of Bay Shore. Aside from not having to transport equipment from Fifth Avenue School to the High School anymore, the addition also allows the two original garage doors that had been filled with this field maintenance equipment to be used once again by the Athletics Department. Many thanks to all the vendors who helped make this project possible: Hubbard Sand and Gravel, Mid-Island Electric, Marjam Supply, Taylor Rental, Home Depot, Fifth Avenue Paving, East Islip Lumber and Suffolk Garage Doors. Thanks also go out to Mr. Kowalik and his hard working staff who worked tirelessly to bring the project to fruition, Mr. Guy Leggio for his instrumental work in laying the foundation of this project, both metaphorically and literally, and to all others who worked to make this happen. The building of this addition illustrates the power of true

Recently, the building of a new, much needed High School athletics storage unit was completed via an amazing collaboration between the Bay Shore Schools, the community and local vendors. The idea to construct the unit came from Board President and coach Mr. Guy Leggio, after handling field maintenance equipment for the High School’s synthetic fields proved challenging. In the past, the necessary equipment was stored at Fifth Avenue School and a tractor was used to bring them over to the High School. Recognizing the need for a more efficient system, Mr. Leggio spoke to Bay Shore Schools Director of Operations and Facilities Richard Kowalik and said, “Wouldn’t it be great if there was an addition built near the High School fields to deal with the overflow of equipment?” Of course, the issue became how an addition would be funded. Bay Shore’s incredible capacity for cooperation and teamwork was about to shine once more. The proposed “addition” project was completed through generous donations of time, resources and equipment. Guy Leggio donated the brickwork himself. The actual building of the addition was done by Bay Shore Schools maintenance staff during working hours, all the

and East Islip’s preseason rating as the No. 9 seed in Suffolk II, the Redmen remain undefeated after four games. They have scored the most points in the league and given up the fewest, with North Babylon as the latest victim. East Islip RB Andre Deegan, a senior, was one of the stars of the day, prompting the crowd to cheer his name. Deegan scored three touchdowns and tallied 182 rushing yards while only carrying the ball seven times. Another senior, Matt Walter, notched his team-leading eighth TD of the year on a pass from QB Casey Nolan. Walter added a 29yard field goal and was perfect on his extra-point tries, going five-for-five. By halftime the score was 21-7 in favor of East Islip, spurring a jubilant mood in the hometown fans that was only ramped up further by the ensuing parade around the track and a rousing performance by the EI kickline team, and which did not diminish until the final buzzer sounded. through Islip Terrace featured four different “decade”-themed floats. The freshmen opted for a 1970s theme, replete with disco ball and dancer, while the sophomores’ boom box float represented the 1980s, blaring Michael Jackson songs. The junior class remembered the 1950s era of rock 'n' roll and the space race with their colorful creation. The winning entry, however, came from this year’s seniors, the Class of 2013, who accompanied their 1960s-themed float with peace signs, tie-dye outfits and amusing signs such as “Free Hugs” and “Will Smile for Money.” After the parade, fans of all ages began to pack the stands at Boomer Esiason Stadium, trumpeting their diehard allegiance with red-and-white jerseys, clothing and face paint. The football game, a 38-13 victory over North Babylon’s rival Bulldogs, was another convincing performance for the rolling Redmen. Despite coach Sal Ciampi’s modesty in proclaiming this a rebuilding year,

can realize that ‘anything is possible.’ I learned early on that life is a journey; A Journey Four Paws had a lot of meaning for me on a personal level - taking the negatives that come our way in life and turning them into positives in each day no matter how bad it may be. I’ve learned so much from my dogs over the years and they give me so much love and ask for so little. We enjoy the outdoors and being together, so seeing Long Island from a walking perspective with them was a wonderful and rewarding experience. And to have raised some money for 2 very important organizations to me is a bonus,” said Irene Rabinowitz, owner of Barks-n-Bubbles Boutique. At ‘the end’ of her Journey there was a Pet Celebration event in Montauk, of Long Island, was also a pet festival with pet vendors, music, food, raffles, prizes for best HOWL-o-ween costumes and more.

People traveled from all over Long Island, upstate and New York City to Montauk on Monday, October 8th (Columbus Day) to cheer on Irene Rabinowitz, owner of Barks-n-Bubbles Boutique, and her dog Sydney at the tail end of their journey of walking 70-miles in four days to raise awareness and funds for two charitable organizations. A Journey Four Paws was Irene’s way of doing something to make a positive impact on getting a dog park built in her hometown in Selden, NY and to raise awareness about Arthritis - in which both her and her dog suffer from. But because of their daily long walks it helps keep them fit and the arthritis at bay. It was her personal journey to do this and had support from pet lovers and pet companies from all over the United States as well as Canada. “I feel great that I put my mind to something and did it. Raising Funds
While donations for A Journey Four Paws are still coming in, Irene estimates to have raised a about two thousand dollars at this point, to be split and donated to the Long Island Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation and to Central Suffolk Paws a division of LI-Dog. Both beneficiaries were picked because they are close to Irene’s heart and because she suffers from Arthritis and the town in which she lives desperately needs a dog park. Central Suffolk Paws is working with the Town of Brookhaven to build a dog park, and the money donated will go towards building one in the near future. Irene is also turning 50 in the early part of 2013 and really wanted to mark her 50th year with a unique way to give back too! The intent of her donation was that monies be used to support health care services to the medically needy. Mrs. Dodd’s niece, Bettie Grinnell, and nephew, Arthur Field have provided direction as to her charitable legacy. “I was not surprised by my aunt’s wishes to donate to Good Samaritan. She was very generous through the years to various organizations and members of her family. Helen lived life to the fullest - traveling the world while managing family funds with a keen eye for investing. She met many people less fortunate than herself in her travels, and I believe this is when she made a promise to herself to help those close to home,” said
Mrs. Grinnell. “Helen was a remarkable woman for her time. She was a working, college educated and independent person during the depression. She saw first hand the devastating effects the great depression had on her family,” said Mr. Fields. Mrs. Dodd had the insight to plan ahead to guarantee that her wishes to fund health care for our underserved community would be properly carried out. She believed in the mission of Good Samaritan Hospital and the hospital’s long-term future which is why she created a legacy gift to support it. “We are grateful to Mrs. Dodd who used her estate to benefit others for many generations to come,” said The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation Executive Director Kathy Dulanto. The National Family Partnership® (NFP) announces the national contest for its 27th Annual Red Ribbon Week®, October 23rd-31st. Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country. In 1985 after the murder of a DEA agent, parents, youth and teachers in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the destruction caused by drugs. This year, families can get involved by entering a contest to promote awareness in their neighborhoods and win a drug prevention grant for their schools. Families can enter Red Ribbon Week’s® contest to win a $1,000 grant for their school and a new iPad for their home. To participate in the contest families and students will decorate the front of their homes with this year’s message: “The Best Me Is Drug FreeTM.” Studies show that substance abuse risks lessen when parents talk to their children about the dangers of drugs, and that is the goal

The DEA is co-sponsoring this year’s national contest. “DEA is excited to partner with the National Family Partnership® on this contest that empowers communities to come together to talk about the drug problem,” said DEA Administrator Michele M. Leonhart. “Red Ribbon Week® is also when we honor DEA Special Agent Enrique ‘Kiki’ Camarena, who made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our communities safe.” Adds the NFP’s Peggy Sapp: “Take the Red Ribbon Week® pledge across America to help children grow up safe, healthy and drug free.” Visit www.redribbon.org/contest for contest information.

Dr. Richard Orlandi and his staff at LaserToenailCenter.com offer in-office treatment of toenail fungus with a new revolutionary laser that kills toenail fungus. “The Pinpointe Laser is a major breakthrough in the treatment of toenail fungus. It is the newest and most effective FDA-approved treatment for toenail fungus now available to the public,” Dr. Orlandi explained. The Pinpointe Laser has appeared on Good Morning America, Fox News NY, ABC News and The Doctors TV show, All of these videos can be seen on their website, LaserToenailCenter.com. The general public is just becoming aware of this highly effective laser treatment that kills fungus underneath the toenail without pain. “The gentle laser light shines through the toenail, and the infrared light directly kills the fungal organisms. FDA studies started in 2007 reveal that
over 80% of the treated patients grew out normal looking toenails after just one treatment. Patients are extremely happy having this new treatment choice.” Dr. Orlandi continues saying, “The painless treatment requires no anesthesia, usually takes 20 to 30 minutes for all ten toes, has no side effects and uses no harmful UV radiation. Since there is no pain, you can walk out just like you walked in, with no restrictions. Toenail polish and shoes can be worn immediately after treatment. Excellent results are commonly seen following treatment of this condition. Healthy, clear toenails are a general indicator of good health, and there is no need to be embarrassed by unsightly fungal toenails.” For further information, contact Office Manager Arrianne at 631.669.4955.

Students in Shannon Rooney-Cordova’s selfcontained K-2 classroom at Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School learned that “A” is for applesauce. The class, currently working on an applerelated learning unit, gathered on October 3rd
to make their own applesauce from scratch. By measuring, cooking and reviewing the class letter of the month (A), the students worked simultaneously on science, math, language arts and life skills. “The students had a lot of fun tasting the
applesauce once it was cooked,” said RooneyCordova. “It was a great way for them to explore their senses and reinforce our science skills and letter of the week.” Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax

Recently, I was presented with the extraordinary opportunity of traveling to Rwanda with my C.W. Post professor, Dr. Smith, along with nineteen other graduate students in the Counseling department. In preparation, we collected school supplies and monetary donations to bring to children living in three of the orphanages we were to visit. Dr. Smith has been collaborating with Dr. Kananga of the Kigali Health Institute to build a school for the children of the Rosa Parks Orphanage. As Smith’s students, we are also actively working to help Dr. Kananga establish a counseling program for citizens of Rwanda. In the aftermath
of the genocide, many Rwandans are in need of counseling to deal with issues such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. In anticipation of my trip, Middle School students in 6th and 8th grade general music classes sent cards with messages of hope to be distributed to the children in the orphanages. The Tri-M Music Honor Society also held a car wash and raised $400 to donate to the Rosa Parks School and students collected supplies from their lockers, as well as clothing, to pass along to the children. One student donated 300 Livestrong bracelets and the Toy Club donated games and toy cars. Middle School teachers
gave clothing and books as well as donations to help defray the cost of bringing these supplies to Rwanda. Packed in my suitcases, the supplies from Bay Shore traveled with me for the eighteen-hour trip, where they were then divided amongst the three orphanages and given out to the children, who were delighted to receive such treasures from America. I have since kept in touch with Dr. Kananga and hope to receive responses from the children for our caring students. Submitted by: Mrs. Anne DeKenipp, Bay Shore Middle School Music Teacher

recognized for their superlative academic success during the school’s annual Senior Ranking Day on October 5th. Vincent Sheppard was announced as the topranked student and future valedictorian of the Class of 2013, with a weighted GPA of 108.317. Ranking second was future salutatorian Allison Casey, who scored a 106.791 weighted GPA. The remaining top 10 students, all of whom were in attendance, were Justin Morena (106.219 weighted GPA) in third place, Grace Revello (105.204 weighted GPA) in fourth, Terence Nixdorf (104.957 weighted GPA) in fifth, Ashley Tarduno (104.854 weighted GPA) in sixth, James Burke (104.559 weighted GPA) in seventh, Kevin Irace (104.541 weighted GPA) in eighth, Julia O’Connor (104.381 weighted GPA) in ninth and Tyler D’Agostino (104.216 weighted GPA) in 10th. Shortly after 9 a.m., East Islip Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer gathered the jubilant seniors in the guidance department’s conference room for a celebratory bagel breakfast, where they were addressed by Principal William Brennen and Superintendent of Schools John J. Finello. The true measure of their accomplishment was put into perspective by Finello, who explained that because East Islip – and on a larger scale, Long Island – is such a highachieving academic area,
these East Islip students are actually among the nation’s finest 12th-grade scholars. “I am extremely proud of our top 10 students,” said Brennen. “This p r e s t i g i o u s accomplishment is the result of a passion and commitment to learning that began in kindergarten and has continued to grow and develop throughout their educational journey in our district. Our top 10 students are wonderful ambassadors for East Islip High school and the entire East Islip community.” The students were also congratulated by Assistant Superintendents Alise Becker-Santa and Carl Fraser, as well as the school’s assistant principals and guidance counselors. Fraser reminded them to congratulate and thank their parents, noting that high-achieving students excel not only due to their abilities but as a result of strong support from their families.
