If it’s the latter, has this person been recommended to you by someone you know and trust? • Before you buy any used car, it’s a good idea to check the vehicle’s history with a Carfax Vehicle History Report. All Star Readers

Each year at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School, students are tasked with the challenge of continuing their daily reading throughout their summer vacation. “The children work so hard during the school year to become strong readers,” remarked Principal Jeannette Feminella. “Summer reading is the best way to maintain all the progress they make each year.” This past summer, the

students at CRES participated in the CREScent Summer Reading AllStar Program. Students not only read over the summer, but created projects of their choice based on their reading. These projects were brought in during the first week of school and used to decorate the school hallways and classrooms. As a reward for all of their hard work, the students who participated in the program were invited to march in the Islip High

School Homecoming Parade. In addition, children received a CRES-cent for each book project they brought to school. These CRES-cents were placed in a schoolwide raffle, from which one student from each grade level was chosen as the CRES Reading Super Star. These Super Stars were given sashes, created by art teacher Bethany Fisher, to wear as they carried the CRES Reading All-Star Banner in the parade.

Full disclosure: I am a Yankee fan. Always have been, always will be. That said, I fully respect those who are not. However, as with politics, when a rivalry takes a turn toward bitter hatred, I lose that respect. Let’s be reminded that, contrary to larger, more world-defining issues, baseball is a game – a highly profitable one, yes; but still, just a game. I laugh when I hear those who use the Yankees’ exorbitant payroll as a valid reason for despising each and every player on the team. Need it be pointed out that just about every team in the MLB employs numerous multi-millionaires on its roster? Is the difference between $5 million for one player versus $20 million for another really that different in the larger scope of things? These are grown men playing a game for a living.

Let’s face it – they are all grossly overpaid. The same can be said for most rock stars, members of Hollywood’s elite, just about all professional athletes – and even some members of a few more universally respected professions. You know, like lawyers and accountants and Wall Street executives… So yes, I understand the criticism directed at certain members of the baseball world whom fans feel have not pulled their weight, who may not have truly “earned their paycheck” this past season. I wholeheartedly agree. But seriously, do you mean to tell me that if a member of your favorite team went on to win the World Series, this extravagance would somehow be deemed more acceptable? I don’t know what it takes to “earn” $20 million, but I’m pretty sure playing baseball doesn’t qualify regardless of

the outcome of the games. It’s the system as a whole that is unbalanced. And, if we’re being totally candid, I’m willing to bet that there are few among us who would turn down such a lucrative opportunity if it meant a lifetime of financial security. So perhaps we shouldn’t be so quick to judge. I enjoy my entertainment as much as the next person. And yes, when my team puts on such a pathetic showing as they did this past postseason, I am filled with just as much frustration as the next person. But then common sense creeps in… just because someone signed a $20 million check for a player, does not guarantee that they will succeed each and every day. We are all only human, despite how inhuman such sums of money sometimes seem. Let’s all save the hatred for an issue that truly matters.

Drugs, which targets children in kindergarten through 12th grade, builds students’ resiliency by teaching them how to be socially competent and autonomous problem solvers. For young people displaying signs of alcohol and drug abuse, Teen Intervene offers a monthlong combination of individual and parentpresent counseling sessions focused on charting a different direction that includes abstinence and healthier coping strategies. LICADD Board Chair and Event Co-Chair Jeffery Capazzi commented on the outstanding turnout: “It is extremely encouraging to see this kind of recognition for the staggering need that exists currently on Long Island. Our participants’ commitment to solving this problem ensures these crucial programs are available to our young people who are most at risk.”

Funds raised at the Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament will help us reach more kids and assist more families across Long Island, with a renewed emphasis on the East End.” LICADD delivers evidence-based prevention programs aimed at bolstering children and young adults’ self-esteem, confidence and communication with peers and parents, before they are presented with the choice to use alcohol and drugs. Golfers at the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence’s inaugural Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament held last Wednesday at the Maidstone Club in East Hampton raised an impressive $126,000 to support the agency’s youth-focused programs. This first time event compliments LICADD’s R. Brinkley Smithers Invitational Golf Tournament, which was held in September in Nassau County. LICADD Board Director and resident of East Hampton and Locust Valley, Alfred E. “We danced the dance, and now it’s time to rock the vote,” said Linda Bily, Cancer Patient Advocacy & Community Outreach Coordinator for the Stony Brook University Cancer Center, who coordinated production of Stony Brook’s video. “We need the support not only of the campus, but from the broader community we serve, since our goal is 75,000 votes in just two weeks’ time.” Last year, Medline sponsored its first online competition nationwide to find the best Pink Glove Dance video. The

competition featured 139 videos from hospitals, nursing homes, schools and other organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada. The contest quickly became a national social media phenomenon, with the videos receiving more than 1.2 million views, a half a million votes and thousands of tweets, blogs and texts. Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, S.C., won last year’s competition with 61,054 votes. Now the race is on to see which video will garner the most votes in

It features campy performances by such leaders as Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, Senior Vice President, Health Sciences, and Dean, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and Yusuf Hannun, MD, Director of the Cancer Center, Vice Dean, Cancer Medicine and the Joel Kenny Professor of Medicine as well as many Stony Brook University sports teams and clubs, and community supporters. “This is all in good fun, but for serious business: defeating breast cancer,” said Dr. Hannun. “This video project is symbolic of all that we can accomplish when we join together to achieve one unifying goal. Stony Brook Medicine has entered the 2nd Annual National Pink Glove video competition, sponsored by MedLine Industries Inc., with a four-minute video capturing the spirit of Stony Brook physicians and staff, as well as the broader Stony Brook community, in their dedication to fighting breast cancer. On Friday, October 12th, voting opened nationwide to determine which videos will receive the most votes, with prize money donated for breast cancer research.

2012, with a top prize of $10,000 to be donated for breast cancer research to the winner’s selected charity of choice. Second prize is $5,000 and third prize is $2,000. Voting ends at midnight on Friday, October 26th, and the winners will be announced on November 2nd. Voting will be conducted using a contest application integrated with Facebook. Users must have a Facebook account and be logged into their account to vote. Users may access the contest application either on Facebook, via a link on www.Facebook.com/medli nebreastcancerawareness or from the contest page that will be displayed on Pinkglovedance.com. Entries are displayed alphabetically so voters can easily locate the entry they wish to vote for. Stony Brook’s video is set to the tune of “You

The Pink Glove Dance video phenomenon began three years ago, when Medline produced the original Pink Glove Dance video to raise breast cancer awareness. The first video generated more than 13 million views on YouTube and inspired countless videos and events around the world.

forefront of breast cancer research. Moms Who Kick has pledged a portion of the 2013 calendar campaign to benefit the research conducted by Drs. Lee and Shapira. Moms Who Kick is a 501(c)(3) Public Charity dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research and to support women’s health. Their annual gala is held to celebrate breast cancer survivors and women affected by cancer. Featuring fit and active moms, many who are breast cancer survivors, along with their bios, cancer awareness tips and tributes, the Moms Who Kick annual calendar was unveiled at the gala. The moms who are featured in the calendar also participated in a fashion show. The event also included a cocktail hour with open bar, seated dinner, dessert, raffle, door prizes, an auction and dancing.

More than 600 friends, participants and supporters joined together for the third annual United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Suffolk, Inc. (UCP of Suffolk) 5K Walk & Wheel on Sunday, October 7th at Belmont Lake State Park in West Babylon to support adults and children with disabilities. This noncompetitive event raised more than $87,000 and the funds raised will support the programs and service that UCP of Suffolk provides to 3,500 individuals with disabilities each year. “We decided to do a walk and wheel instead of a race because we wanted to include all of our program participants, friends, family and employees in promoting life without limits for people with disabilities. We are pleased that the event has grown from 100 people to more than 600 over three years. Many individuals

with a disability participated in the Walk & Wheel, some of them have told me that they feel a sense of accomplishment being able to complete the course,” said Stephen H. Friedman, UCP Suffolk President and CEO. “It took me a little over an hour to go around the lake once in my wheelchair. It was like a big reunion because all of my friends from the other UCP residences were walking and wheeling too. We had so much fun and the whole day was really great,” said John, a resident at one of UCP of Suffolk’s 30 residential homes. Some of the wheelers had assistance from volunteer “push buddies” in completing their two laps around Belmont Lake. Others were able to navigate the path on their own. A few people chose to run the path while others strolled. As each person completed the

course, they were met by cheers from a crowd of friends waiting to welcome and congratulate them. Bethpage Federal Credit Union returned as Presenting Sponsor and was joined by Carlin Systems Inc., Estee Lauder Companies, New York Therapy Placement and TD Bank. Special recognition and thanks go to the top five fund raising teams: Team Home Heart, Team Joey Pfundstein, Team DPK, Team Winter and Team Morlock. Together these teams raised a combined total of over $38,000. Everyone was treated to beverages, bagels, fruit, and snacks courtesy of donations from Atkins, Bagel Chalet in Commack, Breaktime Deli & Catering, Big Geyser Inc, Entenmanns, Fireside Caterers in E. Northport, Peter’s Fruit Co., Suffolk Banana Company and Walkers.

CancerCare will host the 10th Annual Lung Cancer Walk for Hope on Sunday, November 4th, at the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course, in Woodbury. The lung cancer walk was founded in 2003 with 60 walkers and has grown to include more than 1,200 participants. The fundraising goal for this year’s event is $250,000. Lung cancer is often referred to as a “silent” cancer due to the stigma and lack of public awareness about the disease. CancerCare, a national nonprofit,

responded to the need to support people coping with lung cancer and their loved ones by launching a lung cancer program, which provides free counseling, support groups, education, and financial assistance. On-site registration for the Walk is $40.00 for adults, $20.00 for students ages 13-22, and $10.00 for children 12 and under. All registered walkers will receive an official Lung Cancer Walk for Hope Tshirt. Registration and check-in begins at 8 a.m., and the opening ceremony

past year at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting, which showed a genetic marker embedded in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), called microRNA, indicates if a patient with ovarian cancer has a benign or cancerous tumor and that she will benefit from chemotherapy after surgery on the tumor. And at the 2012 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting, Drs. Lee and Shapira presented data which showed they discovered a potential explanation for why breast cancer is not experienced the same way with African American and Caucasian patients, and that there are four main subtypes of breast cancer, one of which has distinct similarities to ovarian cancer. Their efforts to simultaneously study both breast and ovarian cancer place their research at the

COMING EVENTS AROUND TOWN

Last spring’s Key West/Bahamas field trip for East Islip High School’s International Business Globalization and Environment Green Career Academies proved the perfect balance of education and recreation, from the science of the Everglades to the inside scoop on government in the Bahamas. The annual excursion began May 15th, with an airboat trip around Everglades National Park as the first event. “The students were given a firsthand look at the environment and how it is being preserved by the Florida government,” said Career Academy director Israel Malinowitzer. “We saw some rare birds, unique trees and a number of alligators enjoying the water and keeping an eye out for their meals.” While in Key West, Career Academy students visited the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, climbed the nearby lighthouse, viewed a special tourism presentation emphasizing the economic impacts for the area, and took a train tour of the city. “The students were shown a variety of landmarks, including the home of President Truman,” said Malinowitzer. “We also traveled through the Cuban community and were able to see their homes and how their culture interacts with the other families on the

island.” A two-hour kayaking trip in the local mangrove swamp provided information on local organisms and water samples. “The expedition gave the students opportunities to study and compare this area with Long Island’s waters,” said Malinowitzer. The students next visited Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, where the public relations director of the Miami Dolphins football team provided a tour of the entire facility. “They allowed us in the dressing room area,” recalled Malinowitzer. “The students were able to take pictures of some of their favorite players’ lockers.” In the second phase of the field trip, the Academies moved on to Nassau in the Bahamas, initially focusing on undersea explorations. Said Malinowitzer, “We traveled to three locations, where students snorkeled with a school of fish, viewed a shipwrecked boat that had been underwater for a long time, and then took a close look at how sharks live in the area and search for food. We then traveled to a dolphin encounter, where the students interacted with the dolphins and learned how they function.” After the encounter, the students were split into groups. The Environment Green students learned how the dolphins are trained and fed, while the

International Business Globalization students met with the owner of the facility to discuss public relations. “Once again,” Malinowitzer added, “they learned how important tourism is for economic success, even in the Bahamas.” While in Nassau, East Islip’s Career Academies were granted a private meeting with the current governor-general of the Bahamas, Sir Arthur Foulkes. “He was extremely friendly and answered questions from the students,” Malinowitzer said. “He spoke about the Bahamian government, his position and how he represents the queen of England. After the interview session, he invited all of us to sit down and have lunch.” Finally, the students visited a straw market, learning the art of bartering for items they wanted to purchase. “It was another opportunity to educate the children on how many Bahamian residents open small booths and earn income from their weekly sales,” said Malinowitzer. “This trip was absolutely the best educational experience for the Career Academy students,” he concluded. “It provided them so many opportunities to help prepare for their future endeavors.” Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax

The Informed Consumer Take Steps To Avoid Falls All New Yorkers should take precautions to prevent potentially serious falls. Serious falls are the leading cause of injury, death, hospitalizations and emergency department visits for older adults annually in New York State. E a c h year, approximately 133,000 New Yorkers over the age of 65 sustain fallrelated injuries that require hospitalization. The most common injuries that result from serious falls are bone fractures, lacerations, or traumatic brain injuries. The good news is that you can minimize the risk of falling by taking a few simple precautions. De-

clutter stairways or highly-traveled walking areas, install non-slip flooring, steady unstable furniture, install adequate lighting, put handrails on stairways, and make a full home assessment to identify and correct potential fall hazards. Here are a few more simple ways you can reduce the risks of falling: • Engage in a regular exercise program to improve strength, balance and coordination; • Have a discussion with your health care provider to review your doctor prescribed and over- thecounter medications, that may cause dizziness or drowsiness; • Have an annual eye exam to check for poor

vision, a needed change in your eyeglasses prescription, or conditions like glaucoma that may limit your vision; and, • Wear shoes to prevent slipping. For more information about fall injury prevention, visit the New York State Department of Health web site at www.helath.ny.gov This article was sponsored by the New York Department of State, AARP, the Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Center for Elder Abuse at the Hebrew Home at Riverdale, NY State Office for the Aging (SOFA) and the Free Community Papers of New York.

Commemorating Through Art

Islip High School senior Katherine Curran may have only been in secondgrade on September 11th, 2001, but she vividly remembers being grateful that her father, Thomas, a lieutenant in the New York City Fire Department, was unharmed. So, it was an honor for Katie to be asked to use her artistic abilities to create a pin in

commemoration of the 10th anniversary of that fateful day. Katie received a request from family friend Michael Fitall, a lieutenant for FDNY Ladder Company 143, to design a lapel pin as a tribute to the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11. “I would like this tribute to reflect not only the memory of that day, but also the 343 flags that honor all of the firefighters at every St. Patrick’s Day Parade,” wrote Lieutenant Fitall in his letter to Katie. Excited and honored to be asked to create the commemorative pin, Katie spent a month from idea to implementation using watercolor paint to create her design. The design features an American flag,

the Twin Towers, a purple and black flag with the numbers 343 embossed on it and the words “Never Forget.” As a thank you, Katie attended the parade and received her own copy of the pin, as well as a letter of gratitude from FDNY Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano. Additionally, Katie is using her artistic skills to attain her Girl Scout Gold Award. A member of the Girl Scouts for 10 years, Katie is working with the South Shore Community Organization to create seasonal craft projects for children. The Gold Award is the highest honor given to a Girl Scout and all materials for the projects must be donated.

Bucs Beat Bellport

It was one for the books, as the varsity football team clinched their first victory of the season by defeating the Bellport Clippers in a homecoming nail biter. Leading 28-7 at halftime, the Buccaneers held on to win the game 28-27. A bright, sunny day provided the perfect setting for the Islip School District’s Homecoming 2012. Community residents lined Main Street and showed their spirit by wearing the district’s purple and gold

colors, as the annual parade, led by the grand marshal, high school security guard Karen Ernst and her family, weaved its way from Islip Town Hall to the high school athletic field. Students representing their respective grades demonstrated their school spirit and creativity through their unique float designs, while the high school marching band, kickline, and cheerleaders showed off their musical, dancing and crowd-

pleasing talents. Additionally, members of the middle school cheerleading team and the PAL showed their school support by marching in the parade, truly making the occasion a community event. During halftime the marching band provided musical entertainment, while the cheerleaders and kickline wowed the crowd with their energetic cheer and dance routines.

Five East Islip High School students were inducted into the Keep Islip Clean program at an October 9th ceremony held at Islip Town Hall West. Keep Islip Clean, founded in 1989, encourages town residents to participate in cleaning up roadside litter. Deputy Supervisor Trish Bergin Weichbrodt led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance, and speakers included three KIC officials – Executive Director Nancy Cochran, Chairman William Johnston and Co-

Chairman Pamela Raymond – as well as educator Darien Logan. East Islip High School Principal William Brennen was also in attendance. Councilman Steven J. problems focused better when sitting on exercise balls (Pytel, 2007). Occupational therapist Sally Geerlings contends that “the ability to pay attention increases when given the opportunity to move.” (Grandville Public Schools Board of Education, 2007) In one Minnesota school, teachers found the exercise balls so successful they replaced all of the classroom chairs with

Here in Bay Shore Schools, with the help of a grant from Donorschoose.org, funded by Capital One Bank, Physical Education teacher Mrs. Balzano and 5th grade teacher Mr. LaRuina have made exercise balls available for a 5th grade class at Gardiner Manor Elementary School. The response from both students and teachers has been extremely positive.

Fire Prevention Week

At both the school assemblies and the firehouse, firefighters talked about the importance of fire prevention and how to properly deal with dangerous situations that may arise in connection with fire. The 368 participating children learned about the need for fire alarms, how to respond if they were in a smoke-filled room, and the importance of the

“stop, drop and roll” procedure if they ever were actually in a fire. “The firemen were very engaging and educated all who were in attendance,” said Connetquot Principal Deborah Smith. “The children proudly wore their ‘fire hats’ home and learned lessons on safety around stoves and other household electrical appliances.”

President Donna Periconi introduced this new initiative to boost Bay Shore’s economy. Mrs. Periconi explained, “Throughout our country, communities are banding together to organize Cash Mobs to help small, local businesses survive in these tough economic times. Besides offering financial support, these events give residents an opportunity to show a chosen business how important it is to the community. It improves

In recognition of Fire Prevention Awareness Week, members of the Islip Terrace Fire Department visited with students in grades K-3 at Connetquot Elementary School on October 10th. Escorted by several firefighters, fourth- and fifth-graders from the school walked across Manhattan Boulevard on October 10th and 11th to take an actual tour of the firehouse facility.

On Sunday, October 7th, the Bay Shore Chamber of Commerce and BID organized its first “Cash Mob” to support the newly restored Ace Hardware and Variety Store at 94 West Main Street in Bay Shore’s downtown. (NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what you clean with: Never use

ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive. There’s a way to stretch your dollars. • Mind your budget: JAWS Glass & Hard Surface Cleaner (www.jawscleans.com) cleans granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, glass and even your flat-screen TV. It’s also non-toxic and costs less than most other cleaners because each

JAWS product is actually two bottles in one. (The cartridge refill is attached to the bottle.) There are also some other basic preventive measures you can take to protect your granite countertops: • Use coasters: Place a coaster under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices that can etch or dull the surface of many stone countertops. • Use trivets or mats: They’ll protect your granite countertop from hot dishes and help avoid scratches. Granite countertops can really add spark to a kitchen or bathroom. Proper care will keep them looking beautiful.
