Good Shepherd Hospice presents the 6th Annual Bob Sweeney Christmas Gathering to be held on Saturday December 1st at the Hilton Long Island in Huntington.

The 6th Annual Bob Sweeney’s Christmas/Holiday Gathering is free and open to school-age children (5 years old to 17 years old) who have experienced the death of an immediate family member – parent, grandparent or sibling. Caregivers will also participate in the day’s activities.

Arts and crafts, music, and sharing groups are part of the day. A Personal Pal will accompany each child to help them navigate through their feelings and emotions. This annual Christmas Gathering is provided by Good Shepherd Hospice through the generosity of the Robert L. Sweeney Memorial Fund.

These “bags of love” were made from washcloths, using sewing skills the students had learned in the classrooms of FACS teachers Rena Costello, Dani Franzese and Patricia Emmons Fritz.

Over 300 bags were

constructed as of the charity drive’s November 9th deadline.

“This way, people in need could not only get toiletries but a washcloth too,” said Franzese. “This was basically a service learning project that involved the entire school.”

The family and consumer science department at East Islip Middle School came up with an inventive way to help victims of Hurricane Sandy. The “Bags of Love” program involved a districtwide collection of hotel-size toiletries such as shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, hand sanitizer, lotions, lip balm and baby powder.

This holiday season, it seems especially appropriate to reflect on those things we are thankful for, individually and collectively. Considering all that most of us have been through – and continue to go through – over the last month, I believe most of us have found a new appreciation for those things formerly taken for granted.

For one, if you are fortunate enough to spend this Thanksgiving holiday with your family, friends and loved ones, consider yourself ahead of the game. Sure, you may have to forgo the traditional turkey dinner at home, but was the holiday ever truly about the food to begin with?

Perhaps, for some. Food, coupled with football and Black Friday shopping, right?

Well this year, it is about something else, something far more important to the big picture.

Togetherness. Compassion.

Charity. That sense of fulfillment that only comes from these qualities… if only it didn’t take natural disasters and national tragedies to bring this sort of behavior out.

I suppose the better part of human nature is always there, just below the surface, pushed aside by the daily monotony of life’s obligations. But to see it on display… that’s something the likes of which we don’t witness nearly often enough.

This Thanksgiving – and

Christmas, while we’re at it – the emphasis should be on the people we choose to celebrate with. The rest is material – the food, the gifts, the decorations – and can be modified on the fly. But the people… they cannot be replaced.

We have all lost a lot over this last month; at the very least, a sense of security and complacency. Maybe this isn’t a bad thing. Perhaps it is a reminder that we should never take things for granted, and should always be moving forward. You simply never know when things will come to a grinding standstill.

Let’s all enjoy the moments and the memories this holiday season. Absorb each and every one and savor them.

Providing Relief

County Council was ready to provide support and service in a number of ways.

Immediately following Hurricane Sandy, the Council’s Baiting Hollow Scout Camp opened to the community to provide hot showers, hot coffee, and bags of ice. Even though the camp sustained significant tree damage, none of the camp structures suffered serious harm. Providing showers, coffee, and ice was the first of a number of services provided by the Boy Scouts.

A few days after the hurricane struck, National Grid contacted the Council to ask if Baiting Hollow Scout Camp could house and feed out-of-state utility workers.

Even though this request was unexpected, Council staff and volunteers rallied and, within 24 hours, provided sleeping quarters and meal preparation for up to two hundred emergency workers. Cots, blankets, linens, towels, and other

sundries were obtained and assembled in every heated building at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. A hearty breakfast has been provided before dawn every day by volunteers and staff, enabling the work crews to be fed and on their job sites at the break of light.

The Council also organized a clothing drive to assist members of the community who lost possessions in the hurricane.

A large quantity of clothing has been collected both at the Council Service Center in Medford and at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. It is not too late to contribute!

New or used clothing in good condition can be dropped off at the Council Service Center, 7 Scouting Boulevard in Medford, or at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp, 1774 Sound Avenue in Calverton.

While the Council organized these large-scale relief efforts, local districts and units organized smaller efforts targeting

the hardest hit c o m m u n i t i e s , volunteering their time to help their neighbors in any way they can. Boy Scout Troops and Venturing Crews have been active in helping residents with skills learned in the Scouting program.

As the overall relief effort continues to unfold, additional requests have been made of the Boy Scouts and the response has been in line with the Scout Slogan - “Do A Good Turn Daily.”

Governmental agencies such as the Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management have asked Baiting Hollow Scout Camp to assist with displaced families, families that have borne the brunt of Hurricane Sandy. Once again, the Boy Scouts jumped in with a “can-do” attitude and found a way to provide up to 18 families with lodging, breakfast, and dinner at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp for the foreseeable future.

A sense of community

and a strong desire to put the needs of others before ones own has driven the Boy Scouts response.

Council staff and volunteers have been working around the clock to help emergency workers, displaced families, those with lost possessions, and those with basic needs like a hot shower or a bag of ice.

FEMA, working through National Grid and the Suffolk County government, has provided the needed funding for the facilities, equipment, food, laundry services, and other essentials, and for that we are grateful.

Most of all, though, we are thankful and proud of the volunteers who have worked every day to help our neighbors, using vacation time or working the volunteer effort like a second job, going to work during the day and caring for those in need at night.

We couldn’t be more proud of our volunteers!

It’s snowing as I write this and, like many of you, I haven’t had electricity for ten days now. I’m wearing multiple layers of clothing and gloves, and it feels as if I’ll never be able to get warm again. But I need to reach out to you because our friends, our neighbors and our community needs our assistance.

The following Town Shelters and Rescues are reaching out for the community’s help...

One of their serious concerns is their beloved pets. What we’re trying to organize is a list of people available to help, one family at a time. If you can open your home temporarily to a dog or cat - not an unknown stray; rather, someone’s pet - for a limited period of time, you would be helping a family in their worst hour. Many of these families just have nowhere to take their pets while they get themselves back together. With that in mind, please e-mail me if you are able to assist.

If you can take someone’s pet, let me know exactly what your requirements are... Dog or cat? Size? Male or female? Friendly with other pets or kids? How long you can foster? If you can’t take in a pet but can help in some other way (maybe transport?), please let me know. And finally, if you have any ideas on how to make this endeavor work and want to help organize it, please let me know. We will take all the help we can get.

From Bulldog Rescue: Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many of our volunteers have been left without power, evacuated from their homes and tending to getting their own affairs in order. We are in great need of foster homes in New Jersey, Long Island and surrounding areas. This means that if you genuinely want to help a Bulldog who has no where else to turn, we will cover all approved medical expenses and will provide a MCM Rottweiler Rescue crate if needed. We don’t want to turn away a rescue, and we don’t want to see them end up on the street or in the shelters. We Hempstead Shelter: are taking donations to help with costs of boarding if for some reason Hempstead Animal Shelter is in desperate need of newspaper, towwe can’t find a foster home. We can board as a last resort. els and blankets. We don’t have power, and are running on a generator, which means we don’t have a washing machine/dryer. It is a cold Babylon Town Shelter: 30 degrees most nights. Although we have heat in the kennels, it still I have been asked by the Babylon Town Animal Shelter to try to gets chilly. We NEED people to come in to foster animals - we need assist in the huge influx of pets in need of help. Many of the residents rescues to step up to adopt from the shelter. We have small dogs, of Babylon, as well as other townships on Long Island, have been dis- felines, kittens, adults cats and seniors. Anyone interested in adopting

The local youth contingent proved to be strong contestants, with East Islip resident Alex Deveglio the top runner in the 15-19 age group with a time of 19:01 and Great River’s Caleb Shulman finishing in 21:59 to become the 5K’s first 14-

East Islip High School’s varsity field hockey team fought hard in its Suffolk Class A two-game playoff run last weekend, beating Centereach but ultimately falling to Bay Shore in double overtime.

The November 10th contest against Centereach’s Cougars, played in East Islip, yielded a 3-0 shutout for the home team. Scoring

for East Islip (ranked No. 2) were Nicole Levy (twice) and Alexa Martino, with assists from Juliette Polis and Emily Cassar.

A change of venue did little to dampen participation in the annual Redmen 5K Run/Walk, sponsored by the East Islip Athletic Booster Club. Recently, twenty students and two teachers from Sct. Knuds Gymnasium, an upper secondary school in Odense, Denmark, arrived in Bay Shore for six days to take part in an IB ( I n t e r n a t i o n a l Baccalaureate) Program Student Exchange.

Sct. Knuds Gymnasium is a magnet school in Denmark for students interested in studying an advanced liberal arts curriculum with an international focus. Twenty Bay Shore High School IB students hosted the twenty Danish students, while the Danish teachers stayed with Bay Shore IB faculty.

Marylee Ilchuk, parent of a Bay Shore IB student and host of Danish student Emilie Meyer, said of the exchange, “It was the best educational experience for our entire family since our children have been in school.”

Jon Nelson, Bay Shore Schools IB Coordinator, explained the genesis of the exchange, stating, “In June of 2010, we received an email inquiry from a school in Denmark about starting an international project.

Jette Hoej-Larsen, the Sct. Knuds Gymnasium International Coordinator, had seen our school profile on the IBO website listing IB World Schools and thought Bay Shore would make a good match.” The next two years involved frequent online discussions, visits from Denmark to Bay Shore, and the necessary approval from the Board of Education before finally, on October 8th, Sct. Knuds students arrived.

To Mr. Nelson, the educational goals of the program were clear. “One of the primary goals of the IB

Danish Exchange diploma program is to create a spirit of international mindedness in our students. The stated mission of the IB organization is to promote peace through i n t e r n a t i o n a l understanding and a respect for the variety of cultures that exist in the world. Ironically, although the exchange program is geared toward raising global awareness, the interaction between students of different cultures actually helps students learn as much, if not more, about their own culture and identity.”

Danish teacher and director Jette Hoej-Larsen also wrote about the power of the exchange in one of her emails. “Visiting another culture and making friends from another continent will inevitably broaden our students' horizons and sharpen their awareness of living in a global village.”

Some of the highlights of the exchange included Danish students and their hosts visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see its collection of American masterpieces and IB Science teacher Mrs. Donna Watson leading an intercultural lesson on e n v i r o n m e n t a l sustainability in which students compared Danish and American lifestyles to understand how culture and geography affect attitudes toward the environment. On the last day of the exchange, Ms. Nell Kalter, the IB Film teacher, led a film symposium exploring the psychology of fear and how filmmakers draw on our collective nightmares to create one of the most popular film genres.

Throughout the morning, Danish and American students analyzed classic horror films of the last fifty years to learn the conventions of horror and consider whether or not images of fear and anxiety transcend culture and nationality to reach a universal audience.

Teachers, parents and students alike were moved by the power of this exchange. IB English teacher and 2012 New York State Teacher of Excellence Dan Sullivan said, “This is the kind of experience that I will remember and cherish forever. The exchange project has energized me personally and professionally.” As they prepared for their return to Denmark, Ms. Hoej-Larsen said, “We had the most wonderful experience in Bay Shore, learned so much about the American school culture and formed many friendships.

So many helpful and warm people from the school community made our stay a sheer pleasure.”

When asked for his evaluation of the exchange, Mr. Nelson said, “It was an unqualified success on so many levels. What surprised me the most was the intensity of the emotional bonds that can develop in such a short time between people of different cultures and nationalities. I look forward to renewing our friendships when we go to Denmark next spring and deepening our understanding of Danish culture and history.” The Bay Shore host students are also eager to complete the exchange when they visit Denmark for 10 days in late March/early April of 2013.

New York Farm Day

On September 12th, Bay Shore Schools Director of Nutritional Services Janet Sklar attended New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s New York Farm Day in Washington, D.C., having been invited by the senator herself.

The event’s agenda included an introduction to “Farm-To-Fork” initiatives aimed at expanding opportunities

for New York’s agricultural industry, discussions on federal funding opportunities for farmers, and an agriculture working group meeting with Senator Gillibrand.

Last year, Mrs. Sklar’s Farm To School: No Small Potatoes! event celebrated her successful crusade to bring local produce from Long Island’s East End to

Bay Shore Schools cafeterias.

This program and event provided a model for other school districts to follow and earned Mrs. Sklar numerous awards.

Congratulations to Mrs. Sklar on being invited to attend such a prestigious event and for representing the Bay Shore School District so well.

On October 23rd, Mark Skubik, Bay Shore High School Senior and second year Suffolk Aviation Academy student at Eastern Suffolk BOCES, earned his Private Pilot Certificate.

Having made his first solo flight on March 18th at the age of 16, Mark is

now qualified to command any aircraft, subject to appropriate ratings, for any noncommercial purpose, and is authorized to carry passengers.

In order to obtain this certificate, Mark had to turn 17, obtain a third class medical certificate from an Aviation Medical

Board Appreciation Examiner, pass a c o m p u t e r i z e d aeronautical knowledge test, and accumulate and log at least 40 hours of flight time, including cross-country and night flying.

Mark, who intends to pursue a career in aviation, cites as inspiration both his grandfather, Henry Skubik, a WWII B-17 Combat Pilot and former prisoner of war, and his father, United Airlines Captain Gary Skubik, who 36 years earlier earned his Private Pilot Certificate from the same FAA Flight Test Examiner, Frank D’Angelone.

STUFFING THE BUS - On Saturday, October 27th, Bay Shore High School’s 11th Annual “Stuff-a-Bus” Food Drive collected food for people in need within the community. Every holiday season, Bay Shore High School Student Council and Service Honor Society members, under the guidance of Ms. Jackie Side, stuff a bus until it is full with necessary food items to be put in Thanksgiving baskets for needy community members. Special thanks go out to Suffolk Transportation for donating a bus to be used for this worthwhile cause and to all the students, parents, staff members and community residents who donated food. As October is Board of Education Appreciation Month, Bay Shore elementary students and their families attended the October 25th Board Meeting in order to present gifts to each of the Bay Shore Board Members.

Students Ava DeFranco from Brook Avenue, Matthew DuRussel, Megan

Zepf, and Caleigh Ryan from Mary G. Clarkson, and Jennyfer Torres from Gardiner Manor all presented framed pictures of their own artwork to each member of the Board.

Afterwards, Bay Shore Classroom Teacher’s Association President Darleen Darch presented gifts to each member on

behalf of the district’s teachers.

Bay Shore administrators, students, and teachers all wish to thank our Board of Education for their tireless leadership and the numerous hours they volunteer on behalf of our schools and students.

Piano Man State School Music Association’s seventh annual Piano Showcase to be held in Rochester on November 30th.

The process of selection for this prestigious AllState recital is very competitive, requiring all applicants to have received a perfect score on a Level 6 NYSSMA solo audition.

Stevens had achieved this score every year since his first eligibility in third grade, only to be selected as an alternate each year.

This year the eighth-

grader was finally chosen to be one of only 13 AllStaters out of a statewide pool of 87 applicants in grades 4-12.

Stevens began his piano studies at the age of five, studying with Nancy Sessions and later with Joan Horn. Eventually he was invited to perform at two Long Island Philharmonic Master Classes – first at age 8 with Norman Krieger and then at age 10 with Seymour Lipkin – while he was a student at East Islip’s John

F. Kennedy Elementary School.

He has also won acclaim for his horn musicianship, and as a sixth-grader, won the overall first prize at the 2011 Northeast Horn Festival concerto competition held at the University of New Hampshire, outpacing high school and college students alike. He was the recipient of the 2011 Gretchen Snedeker Memorial Scholarship at the New York Summer Music Festival, where he

was the first student ever to win both of NYSMF’s student recital competitions on two different instruments (horn and piano).

This past year, Stevens was a finalist in the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra concerto competition and the LISMA International Music Competition. Most recently, he received the 2011 Dianne Flagello Scholarship and the 2012 Dorothy Hales Gary Scholarship at the

Manhattan School of Music Precollege, where he double-majors in horn and piano (studying piano with Summit Music Festival artistic director Efrem Briskin and horn with the New York Metropolitan Opera orchestra’s Barbara Jöstlein Currie). Stevens currently serves as first horn of both the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York and the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Philharmonic Orchestra.

East Islip Middle School students running in the 2012-2013 student government elections have ensured their classmates are well aware of not only who they are but also what their

positions on the issues are.

The 15 civic-minded middle schoolers created videotaped campaign speeches during visits to East Islip High School’s video production studio on October 24th and 25th.

The speeches were filmed under the guidance of high school technology teacher James Connell by two of his video production students, junior John Callagy and senior Brian Potter.

“This was a true Halloween fright night bash,” said Career Academy director Israel Malinowitzer, referring to this year’s Halloween Family Fun Night at East Islip High School, held on October 25th. The school’s second annual trick-ortreating extravaganza for children age 10 and younger, it was hosted by the school’s kickline team and the East Islip Environment Green and International Business Globalization Career Academies.

Another student, Robert Walters, served as the DJ, providing Halloween-themed music and initiating a fun-filled hour of dancing and singing for the little ones, who learned a variety of novelty dances from their elders, including the electric slide, the chicken dance, the limbo and the hokey pokey.

“Once again, this event was a huge success and parents and children spent a safe evening collecting candy, playing games, dancing and singing,” said Malinowitzer, who

supervised the event with kickline coach Denise Naccarato. “There were many young children at this event and they had a wonderful time interacting with the high school students. We thank our Career Academy teachers, the students and their parents who came out to man the doors, serve the snacks and participate in all of the activities that evening.”

All proceeds from Halloween Family Fun Night will benefit the kickline and Career Academy programs.

The culmination of the weeklong program came on October 26th, when East Islip High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions Club traveled to all four elementary schools in honor of Red Ribbon Week. During the visits to fifth-grade classrooms at Connetquot, John F. Kennedy, Ruth C. Kinney and Timber Point schools,

SADD members spoke about the importance of drug awareness and making wise choices, teaching the younger students effective ways to say no to drugs. The high schoolers helped the fifthgraders participate in a ribbon contest, providing them with the opportunity to create a catchy antidrug slogan for their ribbon. One winner per school will be chosen to receive a $25 gift certificate to Friendly’s and a backpack for their winning ribbon. SADD will announce the winners at the December 13th

Board of Education meeting.

Farm To School Event

TODDLER HIGH - Hurricane Sandy may have postponed Halloween festivities for East Islip High School’s long-running Toddler High program, but the costumes and candy came out on the morning of November 6th as tykes trick-or-treated in the school corridors. Toddler High pairs local preschoolers with high school juniors and seniors for thrice-weekly two-hour sessions of arts and crafts, puppet and game board play, reading and math.

On October 23rd, Bay Shore Schools Director of Nutritional Services Janet Sklar hosted her 2nd Annual Farm To School event at both the Bay Shore Middle School and the Mary G. Clarkson Elementary School. Last year, Mrs. Sklar’s “Farm to School: No Small Potatoes!” event celebrated her successful crusade to bring local “Bsize mini-potatoes” from Long Island’s East End into Bay Shore Schools cafeterias. The program and event provided a model for other school districts to follow and earned Mrs. Sklar numerous awards.

This year, Mrs Sklar was able to bring in fresh, local broccoli, cauliflower, and apples into the Bay Shore Schools. In the morning, Bay Shore Middle School Family & Consumer Science teachers Ms. Maureen Gallagher, Ms. Christine Meenan, and Ms. Samantha Billing brought their students to the event. After giving them information on the farm to school process, they were able to meet representatives from NY Agriculture and Markets,

Sustainable Long Island and local farmers and packers. In addition, students enjoyed tasting the farm-fresh broccoli and cauliflower salad and roasted potatoes, which were prepared by school chefs, Mary Lammens, Debra Rodriguez and Maria Pournaras.

When asked how the salad prepared with raw broccoli and cauliflower picked merely a day before tasted, Middle School student Robert Cooke remarked, “Surprisingly good!”

Angelo Ayala, another Middle School student said, “It’s different from what I normally eat. I didn’t know that it was going to be this good.”

Several students stated that this was the first time that they had ever eaten cauliflower or broccoli or seen a whole roasted potato. The event tied in perfectly with the Nutrition and Food Preparation unit that students are completing in class, where they not only learn about nutritious eating, but also complete healthy food labs. In addition, students are also learning about the importance and

benefits of consuming locally grown produce. In the afternoon, the event moved to Mary G. Clarkson Elementary School where the students there devoured farm fresh, local apples and baked apple crisp.

Many thanks to all those who helped to make the 2nd Farm To School Event such a success: Bob Lewis (NYS Agriculture & Markets), Diane Shulman (Jerry Shulman Finest Produce), Erin Thorensen (Sustainable Long Island), Chelsey Simpson (National Farm to School), Sunny Suchdeve (Senator Gillibrand’s Long Island office), Co-op members Renee Bloom and Gerri Tiger, Debbie Hernandez and Director Ken Hetner (OGS Downstate Distribution Center), Bay Shore Teachers and Administrators from both buildings, our local farmers and, of course, event planner, the indefatigable Mrs. Sklar.

The Farm To School Event was a wonderful learning opportunity for the Bay Shore students and thoroughly enjoyed by all of those involved.

Avenging their only regular season loss (a 1310 defeat on October 13th), East Islip’s varsity football squad intercepted visiting Smithtown West five times on the way to a crushing 23-0 shutout in the first round of the

Suffolk Division II playoffs on November 10th.

The Redmen got on the board in the quarterfinal game’s second quarter with an 11-yard touchdown catch by Paul Dondero. Manhandling the Bulls, East Islip racked

up 17 points in the fourth quarter, including rushing TDs by Andre Deegan and Matt Drywa and a field goal courtesy of Matt Walter.

SCHOLAR SHIRT DAY - The Bay Shore Middle School Guidance Department recently sponsored their 13th Annual 6th Grade Scholar Shirt Day, kicking off an initiative aimed at college awareness and readiness. Along with a brightly colored college T-shirt, each student was treated to a Bay Shore High School cheerleading performance and a contest in which students attempted to answer questions about universities and colleges. Prizes were awarded to students who provided correct answer.
