Join The Madness By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I used to be one of those people who avoided shopping like the plague. And Black Friday shopping? Well, that was an event reserved exclusively for those truly insane individuals hell bent on camping out for some amazing sale or another. Not me. Not ever. And yet… Last year was my first venture into the madness. Considering I hate shopping in general, crowds even more, and don’t even bother to compose a Christmas list until the first week of December – I

would say I handled it pretty well. Great sales, manageable crowds = many purchases for moi. This year, what with the aftermath of the storm and a general lack of festiveness, Christmas shopping was among the last things on my mind. But then I thought – retail therapy…couldn’t hurt, could it? Nothing brings a smile to most peoples’ faces like new “stuff,” whether desperately needed or not. Sure it’s frivolous. Unnecessary even. But who cares? At a certain point, we owe it to ourselves to do whatever it is that brings us pleasure

Shore-LIJ Medical Marvels Program aims to combat a lack of opportunity for young students to get involved in STEM education by encouraging and investing in their interests related to STEM. Three teams will receive awards. The winning team will receive a $1,800 scholarship and the winning team members will be considered for placement in the Feinstein Institute summer program. The second-place team will receive a $1,000 scholarship and the third-place team will receive a $500 scholarship. In addition, the winning team’s faculty mentor will receive a $500 grant towards the purchase of equipment or supplies for his or her classroom. Any New York Stateaccredited educational institution in Nassau or Suffolk counties is eligible to apply. A letter of intent (LOI) must be submitted by December 1 to Cheryl Davidson at the North Shore-LIJ Center for Workforce Readiness at cdavidson@nshs.edu. The LOI should be: • signed by the appropriate building principal(s) or district administrator • submitted on institutional letterhead • and include the following three sections: • a brief history of the school district and its programs in STEM education; • a concise description of the programs that will be leveraged for this project and how students will be selected for participation; and • identification of a designated faculty representative (including contact information) for the program at the school Each eligible institution that submits an LOI will receive detailed proposal instructions and identify at least one multi-disciplinary team of students and a faculty mentor. The written proposal, which is due on February 1st, 2013, will be submitted to a panel of Feinstein Institute scientists who will select the winners. Participants will be invited to attend a celebration event where the proposals will be displayed and the winners announced. This event will take place March 1st, 2013 at the Feinstein Institute in Manhasset. For more details, please contact Cheryl Davidson at cdavidson@nshs.edu.

and takes our mind off the more serious issues at hand. All the problems will still be there come morning, believe me. No sense dwelling on reality. Rather, try your best to turn any negatives into positives whenever possible. Idealistic? Sure. But the holidays are a time for idealism if ever there was one. A time for making wishes and hoping they come true, for starting over and for appreciating everyone and everything just a little bit more... And if shopping helps accomplish even one of these tasks, then so be it. Retail therapy it is!

Breakfast With Santa brighten the holidays for local families devastated by the recent storm. Applebee’s on Long Island and participating restaurants in New Jersey have raised a combined total of over $2.7 million for Toys for Tots over the past 13 years. Dollars raised in each community benefit that local community. To raise additional funds for the U.S. Marine Corps program, Applebee’s is also offering paper “gift packages” for $1 each that will be prominently displayed in the restaurant. To purchase tickets to Breakfast with Santa, while seats are available, call or stop by your local Applebee’s today. To find a participating Applebee’s in your neighborhood, visit www.applebees.com.

They are currently recruiting members for the corps. For the small fee of $15 per year, the student will receive lessons, both private and with the group, from the teaching staff, which has a combined experience of over 100 years of drum corps. Also, they provide the instruments so that you can practice at home. If you would like to be a part of this musical tradition on Long Island, you can contact 631.589.5047 for additional information.

Kent is also currently looking for volunteers for their many programs at the shelter. With over 100 cats and kittens and over 25 dogs to care for, there are many areas in which Kent needs volunteers from office

administration, dog walking, to photography. To find out what you may be able to do as a volunteer, contact Heidi Guamet at 631.727.5731. For press inquiries or an interview with Pam Green contact Nancy Hassel at Nancy@LongIslandPetPro fessionals.com or call 631.446.1105.

coverage of the drug crisis on Long Island has helped raise awareness, especially among parents of teens who are at risk for substance abuse. As the CEO and CoFounder of the Treatment Research Institute (TRI), Community Champion Dr. McLellan has a long history of leadership in the field of substance abuse, and his research has shaped policy on each level of the public sphere. From 2009 to 2010, Dr. McLellan was the Science Advisor and Deputy Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), a congressionally confirmed Presidential appointment to help shape the nation’s public policy approach to illicit drug use. At ONDCP, Dr. McLellan worked on a broad range of drug issues, including the formulation and implementation of the President’s National Drug Control Strategy and promotion of drug treatment through the broader redesigning of the

national health care system. For over thirty years, Treatment Champion Patricia Hincken, LCSW-R, CASAC, CPP has advocated for and expanded the services that are available

for Long Island’s chemically dependent citizens. Ms. Hincken currently serves as the Director of Addiction Recovery Services at Zucker Hillside Hospital. Having dedicated her career to

studying addiction and providing treatment, she says she is “continually inspired by staff and patients, and finds the journey through addiction and recovery remarkable.”

REDMEN FALL - Despite numerous terrific plays and a strong display of athleticism, East Islip’s varsity football team fell short to North Babylon in a Suffolk II semifinal playoff matchup on November 17th. The Redmen led 20-14 at halftime, but the visiting Bulldogs overcame this deficit to win 52-41. While the team did not make it out of the second round of the playoffs, 2012-13 will still be remembered as a great season for the EI football program, one that exceeded expectations and provided memorable lessons and moments of teamwork and good sportsmanship.

LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds described the event, “It's important that we take the time to honor those who are championing recovery and take some time to celebrate our victories as we gear up for the challenges that lie ahead. LICADD's five decades of rich history was on display yesterday, as was our resolve for a strong and active future.” Across Long Island, families are dealing with the devastating effects of untreated addiction. Their painful stories create the momentum needed to push life-saving legislation through our local and state governments. Media Champion Mr. Scaglia is the Editor of Special Sections for Anton Community Newspapers, and his

Soccer Vs. Sandy

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi joined with East Islip Soccer Club in hosting a tournament on November 17th and 18th to help benefit residents who were hit hard by Superstorm Sandy. With more than 115 teams from across Long Island participating, the Club raised more than $25,000 and collected two truckloads of food and

supplies. Club President, John Davis said, “The soccer community came together, as we always do, to help folks in our community deal with the impact of this storm. This was an incredibly rewarding experience and the dozens of volunteers that helped make it successful have a lot to be proud of.”

Legislator Tom Cilmi, Past President of the Club spent the entire weekend at the fields. He said, “It’s a privilege to be a small part of this great organization and such a wonderfully generous community. In the end, more than a thousand kids contributed to this effort and had fun doing so. That’s a lesson of a lifetime.”

Food Drive A Success

The aftereffects of Hurricane Sandy and the subsequent fuel shortages may have complicated matters for East Islip High School’s holiday food drive, held each year on the Thursday before Thanksgiving, but altruistic students and community members did not falter in their quest to provide food for the needy. In the past, teams of students from the student council, STARS and the other school clubs have visited nearly every household in the East Islip, Islip Terrace and Great River community on the weekend before the food drive, delivering fliers asking for donations of frozen turkeys and nonperishable food items on behalf of those in need. They then return to those houses on the following Thursday evening to pick up donated food “trick-ortreat” style. Vehicles from

local churches and food pantries wait in the high school parking lot as the students return with the collected donations. This year the students were unable to drive around the community to drop off fliers or pick up the donations, so they only left the requests and returned to collect donations on foot from households within walking distance of the school. Community members who resided further away were asked to deliver their donations to the staging area near the gym entrance in the high school parking lot, and on the night of Nov. 15, the cars, trucks and bags of food poured in from all over the East Islip School District. “It was an incredible experience,” said student council adviser Frances Li. “I am so proud of my kids and so humbled by the

district’s response to those in need. It is amazing how many people worked together to help others. This is what teaching is all about – learning and helping each other.” “Many of our local churches depend on our food drive to help feed our community members during the holidays, and the relief efforts associated with Hurricane Sandy put an additional burden on our local food pantries, so this year’s drive was extremely important,” added East Islip High School Principal William Brennen. “On behalf of everyone at East Islip High School, we thank those who participated and contributed for their continued kindness, generosity and support of our community.” Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax
