Craving 4 A Cure ast Islip Middle School held a fundraising walk to help cure juvenile diabetes recently.

Sponsored by Craving 4 A Cure, the event was originally set to take place November 1st, but the hurricane and that week’s inclement weather led to a rescheduling and a move indoors. The 60 participants – including Principal Mark Bernard, several teachers and students from grades 6-8 – walked a mile through the hallways of the school, raising a total of $2,828.

As a result of my daily commute having been recently increased from 15 minutes to anywhere from 45 minutes (on a good day) to… oh, let’s say an hour plus on a normal morning during rush hour, I have had the overwhelming privilege to observe the shenanigans of one of our favorites: the fellow motorist.

And here I thought residential, stop-and-go driving was bad.

To be clear, there is a certain nuance to the pleasure of trailing behind a line of school buses, to the point that you manage to hit every single stop sign and traffic light within a five-mile stretch. And let’s not forget the classic inching forward while reading street signs – oh wait, I wanted to turn three blocks back…let’s just throw the car in reverse, why don’t we.

But that’s nothing compared to highway and parkway driving.

Head out to the open roads, and it’s a whole new ballgame.

There are those who feel the need to merge at speeds approaching 70 miles per hour, all the while paying no attention to the speed you may be approaching at. Make way, because they’re coming regardless!

Then there are the people who seem to have an aversion to using that shoulder portion leading up to an exit ramp, instead preferring to come to a screeching halt right in their lane – your lane – as they contemplate whether this is really where they need to get off.

Umm… drive much?

Oh, but let’s not forget my favorite – those who make a habit of driving at night with their brights on, blinding all those in front of them with

When Hurricane Sandy touched down on Long Island, many were greatly affected by its devastation.

Fifth Avenue Fire Department brought Santa and Frosty to the event and distributed candy canes and gelt to everyone. Lastly, this year's tree and menorah lighting honorees were John, Gail, Deirdre, Erin and Karen Wahlberg. John does a great deal of volunteer work for the Bay Shore community, including all the electrical work at the Reflection Garden, and serves as a Bay Shore Chamber of Commerce board member.

His daughter Deirdre volunteers for Light the Night. Bel Pagdanganan, Bill Ryan and Terri Kelly, all representatives from National Grid, were also honored for being true partners in Bay Shore's revitalization.

On December 1st, the Bay Shore-Brightwaters Beautification Society, a sub-committee of the Bay Shore Summit Council, held its annual Winterfest at the Main Street Band Shell in downtown Bay Shore.

Despite the cold, a large constituency of residents turned out to enjoy the music, wreaths, hot chocolate (donated by Bay Shore's own Milk and Sugar) and tree and menorah lightings. Bay Shore Middle School 6th and 7th grade Student Council members, under the direction of teachers Lori Gschwind, Amy Scognamillo and Denise Zappia, assisted with the festive holiday wreath decorating, bell distribution, clean up and Light the Night kit sales.

Despite a topsy-turvy season turned upside down by Hurricane Sandy, East Islip High School cross-country runner Niamh Ashe finished as the undefeated League III Champion this year and was selected to the AllCounty first team.

Ashe was one of Suffolk County’s top-rated 3,000meter runners at the conclusion of last spring's track season, and continued her superlative high school athletic career this fall. She posted the fourth fastest 5K time at Sunken Meadow State Park for Class A girls this season with 19:32.3, a feat accomplished at the Suffolk County Coaches Association Cross Country Invitational on September 29th. She also posted the fourth fastest time on the three-mile course, having run 18:35.0.

On October 20th, East Islip’s girls cross-country squad participated at the annual Brown University Northeast Cross Country Championship at Goddard Memorial State Park in Warwick, R.I, with Ashe leading the way. Running in the event’s championship race, she finished in eighth place, beating many champions from nearby states.

Her team competed in the Division II Championships at Sunken Meadow on October 23rd, but Ashe was unable to participate due to an Achilles tendon strain.

Hurricane Sandy played havoc with the crosscountry team’s postseason. East Islip’s top seven girls were scheduled to compete in the state qualifier meet at Sunken Meadow on November 2nd, which was canceled when 350 trees fell in the state park. Section XI officials rescheduled the cross-country state qualifier for November 7th, and Ashe was 100 percent healthy and ready to improve her time, but the weather again stepped in. That Wednesday's nor’easter put an end to the state qualifier and the

officials decided to select the individual runners for the state team based on the results of the Division Championships.

Ashe unfortunately did not compete in that meet and thus did not make the state team, despite excellent recent training. “Boys track coach Jim Marino and I both thought Niamh had a great chance to make the state team,� said East Islip girls track coach Steve Brown.

Along with teammates Emily Fusco and Kayla Murphy, Ashe extended her season by running as an independent on November 24th at the prestigious Foot Locker Cross Country Championships Northeast Regional at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. She will also have a chance to compete at the state meet again at the end of the winter and spring seasons. “Not only is Niamh an excellent athlete, but she excels in the classroom as well,� said Brown. The senior plans to continue running at the college level and has already been contacted by numerous colleges that would like her to attend.

Sheriff’s Office Honored exceed 133 quality accreditation standards.

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is among one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the State to be granted the accreditation.

During today’s ceremony in Hauppauge, Sheriff DeMarco thanked the County Legislature for recognizing the significance of the achievement, and added, “our deputy sheriffs and civilian staff are among the most talented and respected law enforcement professionals in the State and, and to be recognized by all 18 members of the County Legislature is a special honor.

Of the more than 520 law enforcement organizations in the State of New York, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is one of only 143 agencies to have achieved this level of accreditation.

Medical Symposium

East Islip High School’s new Medical and Health Technology Career Academy sponsored its first symposium on November 14th in conjunction with North Shore-LIJ Health System, featuring three doctors from North Shore-LIJ’s Southside Hospital.

On hand to discuss medical careers with the East Islip seniors were Dr. Michael Nett, an orthopedic surgeon; Dr. Frank Manetta, a cardiothoracic surgeon; and Dr. Rosanna Sabini, who specializes in traumatic brain injury and concussion rehabilitation.

Using a PowerPoint presentation and photos, the doctors explained what their jobs entail and the procedures that they must follow when performing surgeries.

Also present for the event, held in the school’s library, were Kerri Fontaine, the hospital’s manager of marketing and education; Vincent Cunningham, Southside’s community relations coordinator; Cheryl Davidson, North ShoreLIJ’s director of workforce readiness; East Islip science teacher Lisa Neri; and Israel Malinowitzer, the Career Academy’s

director.

“The doctors were very informative and spent two hours answering questions and providing students with a better understanding of what is required of those who plan on going into the medical field,” explained Malinowitzer.

“These students will be graduating in June 2013, and a conference like this is an excellent way for them to meet doctors and to ask them specific questions that will help the students decide if they are following the right career paths.”

Teacher Greg Kguloian’s English language arts class modernized a classic in “Caesar 2012,” the latest in the Lit.2 Life series of cross-curriculum learning opportunities that Kguloian has offered his students.

For Lit.2 Life 4.0, the East Islip High School sophomores rewrote William Shakespeare’s tragic 1599 play Julius

Caesar, working together to create unique scripts and then acting out their original one-act plays over the course of several days in October.

“The premise was that the election is won by an ambitious and charismatic leader who invokes the Patriot Act to the extreme and outlaws individual freedom to ensure law and order for all, very much

like the Napoleonic Code,” explained Kguloian. “My students have learned how to understand the meaning behind the words of a Shakespearean play; therefore they took the classic ending of ‘Julius Caesar’ and made it their own.”

Tri-ing For Kids

On Thanksgiving morning, over 600 participants showed up to run and support the annual Tri-ing for Kids Turkey Trot 5K in Bay Shore-Brightwaters. The race was sponsored by Triing for Kids!! (TFK) supporting the Michael Racanelli Forever Young Foundation (MRFY).

Tri-ing For Kids is a 501C3 not for profit organization comprised of individuals inspired to complete endurance events for a cause greater than a medal. TFK provides financial support for sick and injured

children and charitable causes which fit within its m i s s i o n . (http://www.triingforkids. org) The Michael Racanelli Forever Young Foundation's mission is to help young people in the many communities Michael Racanelli, ‘09, was blessed to be a part of. (http://racanellifoundatio n.com/) Over $12,500 was raised for the MRFY Foundation this past Thanksgiving morning and, since 2006, TFK has donated over $750,000 to local children’s hospitals and

charities.

Paolo Fiore was the overall winner with an impressive time of 16:13, followed by Matt Connors at 17:59. The first female finisher was Nadine Moors with a time of 19:58.

However, as Doug Rabin, founder of TFK, stated, "MRFY, all the families and everyone who ran today were winners!!"

Wreath Sale Held

The fresh, green smell of pine wafted through the hallways as the East Islip High School Orchestra held its annual Christmas wreath sale on November 30th.

As in the past (the wreath sale has been a fixture for decades now), the school’s orchestra program worked with a

commercial wreath wholesaler to offer doublefaced balsam pine wreaths in 2- or 3-foot sizes for either home or office delivery. The proceeds will be used to help fund the orchestra’s Music Scholarship Fund and annual Spring Music Competition trip.

“We thank the

community again for their support and patronage,” said East Islip High School Orchestra Director Susan W. Rydzeski, who spent all of Friday in the orchestra room working with the students to construct the wreaths.

teacher and esteemed Girls’ Varsity Track Coach Mr. Steve Borbet) is a painter and collage artist with a studio in downtown Manhattan. He created a workshop for the students about the aim of his work and students learned about Jason’s work process and implemented hands-on collage technique by creating their own college pieces

under his leadership.

This was a unique opportunity for students to work alongside a professional artist while creating their own original works of art.

Many thanks to the Art Honor Society and the Bay Shore Schools Arts and Education Fund (BSSAEF) for sponsoring this valuable in-school field trip.

DONATIONS WELCOME - Kayla Kniff, a 3rd grade student at JFK Elementary School in East Islip, loves animals and wanted to help out the animals that were effected by Hurricane Sandy. She and a few friends raised money having lemon aide stands over the summer. She also had a fundraiser at school where she collected dog and cat foods,cat litter, treats, leashes, hand sanitizers, towels and blankets and TODDLERS CELEBRATE - East Islip’s Toddler High program held a Thanksgiving pillows. East Islip High School teacher James Connell’s broadcast television and video production classes returned with another electrifying edition of the school’s annual daytime variety show program, The Embers Coffee House.

Produced live on November 21st in front of appreciative audiences of their classmates, Embers offered dozens of song and skit segments of diverse kinds over the course of several periods, with students managing the lighting, sound, set and cameras.

Affable student hosts Stephen Biondi, Lea Briscoe, Alexa Konnerth, Brian Potter and Sarah Schreiner ensured that the crowd remained entertained, while Nicole Bove, John Matros, Moira McGrath and Juliet Witkowski served coffee, cookies and pretzels from behind the counter of the cute “coffee shop.”

Brendan Bullard served as head producer, contributing mightily to how efficiently and professionally the show was run. “Brendan put a lot of time and energy into the event and was the main reason it was a success,” said Connell.

Craving 4 A Cure

East Islip Middle School held a fundraising walk to help cure juvenile diabetes on November 15th.

Sponsored by Craving 4 A Cure, the event was originally set to take place outside the school on November 1st, but the hurricane and that week’s inclement weather led to a rescheduling and a move indoors.

The 60 participants – including Principal Mark Bernard, several teachers and students from grades 6-8 – walked a mile through the hallways of the school and raised a total of $2,828. The

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation provided special T-shirts for everyone who took part.

Seventh-grader Sophia Gerace was the walk’s top donator, raising $300 for the cause and winning an East Islip school jacket donated by the school store. A close second was Heather McNamara, who raised $295. A pizza party reward awaits all of the participants.

“I’d like to give special thanks to Heather McNamara for kicking off our event and talking about juvenile diabetes,”

said Diane Perry, a physical education teacher at the school. “Although our Craving 4 A Cure team had fewer participants than had originally signed up, largely due to having to reschedule after Superstorm Sandy, we are extremely happy with the amount of money raised.

We all walked a mile and got some exercise in addition to helping raise money to research a cure for juvenile diabetes.”

listened intently as the veterans – spanning more than 70 years of military experience – shared their stories and their involvement in conflicts ranging from World War II to the current Iraq War. Offering a unique perspective on military life for the current students this year was Islip High School Class of 2012 alumnus Chris Papszycki.

Chris returned to the school to speak with the social studies classes following his graduation from Marine Corps boot camp on November 9th.

“Inviting our local veterans in to speak with our classes is a great way to honor our veterans and thank them for the service they have provided us,” said Mr. Blanchard.

Every October, students in the Islip School District participate in various activities aimed at promoting healthy living and making good decisions as part of their Red Ribbon Week celebrations.

This year, the kindergarten and firstgrade students at Wing Elementary School expanded upon their lessons from previous years. At Wing, the students pledged to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables daily, be active for at least 60 minutes a day and participate in no more than two hours of screen time (Internet or television). According to

Principal Diane Druckman, “The students walked a red line to promise they will stay the course and make good choices.

We’ve also focused on friendship and age-appropriate language.” In addition, the PTA provided red ribbons for the students to tie together on the fence, spelling out “Good Choices.”

At the high school, the students celebrated Red Ribbon Day on November 13th, as the week of activities was canceled due to Hurricane Sandy.

At lunchtime, the SADD club and the IDEA Task Force Compass Coalition sponsored a student leadership fair, which provided students with information on the various clubs and sports teams offered at the school. The PTSA also sponsored a lunchtime activity in which they set up a drug awareness table where students could pledge to remain drug and alcohol free. In exchange, the pledge takers were entered in a raffle to win prizes to local restaurants and stores.

Teaching Teamwork

The New York Islanders ice hockey organization paid an inspiring visit to the Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School gym in Islip Terrace on November 14th.

Focusing on safety, health, physical activity and teamwork, the two Islanders representatives – arena hostess Dina and

mascot Sparky – taught students about making smart decisions and working together as a team. The third-graders watched an Islanders video and participated in physical activity, with selected students given the opportunity to conduct an experiment with hockey pucks to

prove that challenges can be accomplished with teamwork.

“The students were very excited and chanted ‘Islanders, Islanders’ throughout the assembly,” said Bonnie Rabin, RCK’s physical education teacher.

The Chiefs, Directors and Membership of the Bay Shore – Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance, Inc. have officially placed into service a new special operations vehicle. This vehicle, affectionately nicknamed “Hercules,” is the culmination of four years of designing and planning and is configured to handle numerous types of emergencies.

From multiple patient scenarios, to hazardous materials decontamination, to water rescues and flooding, this truck will allow direct and immediate rescue to the residents of the Bay Shore – Brightwaters in distress.

3-24-1 is built on a 2008 Chevrolet C5500 Kodiak crew cab chassis with Duramax diesel engine and Allison Automatic transmission. The OEM front bumper was removed and replaced with a Buckstop bumper that houses a recessed mounted Warn 16,000lb winch.

The truck is equipped with an Onan 20kw Protec PTO generator which powers a Will-Burt NS4.5-9000 (OPT) 9000-watt light mast and two Hannay electric rewind cable reels with 200’ x 8/3 cable. The body is a 13’ all aluminum walk around rescue style

body equipped with ROM aluminum roll up doors.

The body top features two coffin compartments, one each side of the body with a center walkway. The body compartments are equipped with multiple adjustable shelves and slide out trays, including a dual direction tray. The warning light package is a Whelen M Series Super LED warning light package. The apparatus is also equipped with Whelen Pioneer LED scene lights in multiple locations.

“This vehicle will allow us to retire our previous special operations vehicle” said Peter Klopsis, Bay Shore – Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance BOD President, “We had converted an old ambulance with limited room and limited capabilities. This is a huge asset to our department, allowing us to provide the very best in emergency care”.

Already, within a month of being put in service 324-1 has proven itself to be a necessity. It was an essential part of our team during Superstorm Sandy and has been used during numerous structure fires.

In addition to holding ample medical supplies in the event of any Mass

Casualty Incident, 3-24-1 is home to our MCI Tent, Decontamination Holdings and Air Conditioner-Heater Unit, which has been utilized a number of times this year; both on scenes and for standby events.

An official wash down was completed Saturday, November 24th with assistance from Bay Shore Fire Department. BSBRA is extremely excited and proud to take delivery of this vehicle and look forward to having it as part of our fleet. The department would like to specifically thank Chief Gerald Guszack and Christopher Guszack for their dedicated assistance and hard work in the purchase, design and insight of this vehicle.

On Saturday, November 10th, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center held its 2012 Hospital Ball at the East Wind Inn and Spa in Wading River. This annual

event is the pinnacle of our fund raising efforts, and raised almost $600,000 for the Medical Center.

This year we had the distinct honor of

recognizing Dr. Edward J. Kormylo with the Dr. Jacob Dranitzke Award.

This award is presented annually to an individual who demonstrates involvement, support, and

FUNDRAISER A SUCCESS - The Hello Taiwan Rocks! fundraising concert won the support of Comptroller, John Liu, newly elected Congresswoman Grace Meng, newly elected Assemblyman Ron Kim and New York City Councilmember, Peter Koo. The combined effort of the Taiwanese community, volunteers, sponsors and AsianInNY, the concert raised $10,000 for the Breezy Point victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Prudential is dedicated to their role as a caring corporate citizen, and to the trust placed in them by the Medical Center.

In recognition of the profound effect the recent storms had on our employees, Brookhaven also announced the establishment of an Employee Relief Fund to assist those in need now and in the future. The appeal raised almost $10,000 that evening and our efforts to raise funds for this purpose will continue.

All funds raised will help fund the construction of new cardiology and operating suites and the programs and services associated with them.

Brookhaven Memorial Hospital has received a Challenge Grant that will match the net proceeds of this event.

In an effort to share the extraordinary 12-12-12 Concert for Sandy Relief with many of those most impacted by this storm, Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, The Madison Square Garden Company and The Weinstein Company today announced that this unprecedented event will be simulcast live in select movie theaters in hurricane-affected areas throughout the tri-state region, including in five Clearview Cinemas and a National Amusements Multiplex in Nassau County and the National Amusements Island 16 Cinema de Lux in Suffolk County. This presentation will be FREE of charge to all attendees and complimentary refreshments will be provided.

Clearview Cinemas in Babylon, Baldwin, Franklin Square, Great Neck and Port Washington, along with the National Amusements Multiplex in Farmingdale and National Amusements Island 16 Cinema de Lux in Holtsville will participate.

Select theatres from Bow Tie Cinemas, Frank Theatres, Marquee Cinemas, National Amusements and Rave Cinemas will also participate. Free tickets are available now at the participating theater box offices, and will be distributed on a firstcome, first-serve basis.

Event producers James Dolan, John Sykes and Harvey Weinstein issued the following joint statement: “The live simulcast of this historic benefit concert in movie theatres will provide a welcome opportunity for those people still recovering from the devastation to have an enjoyable and muchneeded night out.
