Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS) urgently needs volunteers to join its efforts to stop bullying and cyber-bullying among school-age children. CAPS is Long Island’s leading non-profit resource on the prevention of bullying, child abuse and neglect, and, through its Bully Prevention Center, provides youth violence prevention and child safety education at no cost to local schools in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

“Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization, and without them, our work would not be possible. While they come from different backgrounds and professions, all share the desire to make a difference in a child’s life - and they do as CAPS Volunteer Presenters,” said Alane Fagin, Executive Director.

Slowly But Surely By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Little by little, things are beginning to get back on track. There are small signs throughout the neighborhood – a few lights on here and there, the glimmer of a Christmas tree through the window, the sound of Christmas songs filtering from the windows of passing cars… Tis’ the time of the season, as out of sorts as many of us may feel this particular holiday season.

Life goes on, as we have seen. From storms and floods and uncontrollable acts of nature, to horrific tragedies from across the globe to our neighbors in Newtown, CT, as much as it seems that things

will never return to normal, somehow, they manage to progress to the point of at least being tolerable. The new normal, I suppose you could say, where we learn to make do while making adjustments on the fly.

What is “normal” anyway?

Personally, never before have I looked forward to a new year with quite the same level of anticipation. Sure, it’s just a flip of the calendar; but psychologically, there’s nothing quite like saying “good riddance” to a collection of not-so-great circumstances.

And so, we look forward.

Onward and upward, as they say. There’s nothing like good old-fashioned progress, snail’s-pace as it may be, to

refresh the spirit.

For those displaced by Storm Sandy, the phrase “home for the holidays” doesn’t quite apply. But still, just being surrounded by those you love brings a certain degree of comfort that even the most dramatic upheaval can’t displace.

Hopefully, within the next few months, the process of rebuilding what was lost will be further along the way to completion, and we can all settle back into our “normal” routines – only this time with a greater appreciation for what we have, mainly those things that cannot be replaced.

Happy New Year to all… see you on the flip side.

Three healthcare heroes who have dedicated more than 70 years of service to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center were nominated for recognition in Long Island Business News Health Care Heroes Awards. Dmitriy Vaysman, MD, Bruce Litwack and Gail Sullivan were awarded in the physician, healthcare professional and volunteer hero categories respectively at a breakfast on November

27th, at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.

As Director of Good Samaritan’s pediatric sleep program, Dr. Vaysman was recognized for his role in facilitating the opening of the sleep center in the Center for Pediatric Specialty Care in 2007. In addition to receiving Good Samaritan’s Physician of the Quarter for his role in providing care to a young patient with pulmonary failure for the past several years, he serves as a mentor to the residents and offers one-on-one education. He is also an active volunteer for several important causes related to children’s health and well-being.

Bruce Litwack was recognized for his devoted service to the community.

As a firefighter/EMT and member of Good Samaritan and St. Catherine of Siena members of Catholic Health Services, he has consistently put others before himself.

His knowledge in emergency management and disaster planning makes him an invaluable member of the Long Island hospital community. In addition, he is a supporter of local community functions and regularly interacts with the town, county and state government to ensure that the community he serves receives the highest level of health care and is prepared in the event of any emergency.

Since 1982, Chair of

Good Samaritan’s Mission & Ministry committee Gail Sullivan has lived in the Village of Babylon, raised three sons, succeeded in business and became involved with volunteer work.

In addition to her work as a member and past president of the Guilds of Good Samaritan, she has been active in St. Joseph’s Church and Babylon Rotary. She has been recognized for her more than 30 years of volunteer service at Good Samaritan and exemplifying the mission of the organization on a daily basis.

Health Care Hero Awards honor individuals and organizations in the health care industry in Nassau and Suffolk Counties who epitomize the spirit embodied in the word HERO. Arthur Krantz’s We Care for Kids sponsored the 3rd Annual Angela’s House Holiday Party last weekend, December 1st and December 2nd, for the organization’s medically fragile children and their families. The two funfilled days took place at a hall donated by The Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 25 in Hauppauge.

Each year the children, their parents and siblings, and the entire organization look forward to the Holiday Season and the magnificent party that they are able to attend, in hopes of spreading some of the Holiday Spirit. Upon walking into the room,

guests experienced the magical dĂŠcor including tons of balloons and stuffed animals, toys, inflatables, lights, and more. “It’s like taking the kids to Disney for the day,â€? said organization founder, Bob Policastro, “it’s beyond belief.â€?

The main sponsor of the event is Arthur Krantz and his organization, We Care For Kids, who also provided entertainment for the children, as Krantz was dressed as King Arthur. Many others people donated their time to making this party a success, as well, including medical staff from Stony Brooks Children’s Hospital who helped

supervise the children. “Our many heartfelt thanks to him [Arthur Krantz] and all the volunteers who selflessly devoted their time to brighten the Holidays for our children. And to all the wonderful staff at Angela's House, thank you for all you do all year for so many who need you,� said Mary Costanza Mingoia, parent of an Angela’s house child.

During this yuletide season of giving, we in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) especially acknowledge our leagues and clubs plus companies we work with that went beyond the proverbial extra mile to provide Hurricane Sandy relief.

SportsSignup in Saratoga Springs made a $10,000 donation to the ENYYSA leagues most affected by Hurricane Sandy. The Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL), Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) and Staten Island Youth Soccer League (SIYSL) each received $3,333. “We are a national company but New York State is our home and even members of our own families have been affected

by Hurricane Sandy,” commented SportsSignup CEO Anthony Bruno. “We wanted to give to these organizations to help them get back on their feet.”

The LIJSL held a food drive on November 10th and 11th at the Peter Collins Soccer Park in Plainview and the LIJSL office in Ronkonkoma.

4,134 lbs. of food, personal care items and homecleaning supplies, as well as a van full of coats and blankets, were donated by Long Island soccer families.

Hauppauge Soccer Club coach Joe Grippo organized a fundraiser on November 18 that raised $15,000 in donations and over 9,000 lbs. in nonperishable items for the American Red Cross and Island Harvest. “He put the event together in six days,” said Hauppauge Soccer Club President Pedro Contreras.

“Although there were many others in our club who assisted, it was his tireless work that made the event so successful.”

The Boys-Under-11 West Babylon Pride assisted with food

handouts while the parents cooked some hot meals. The team also collected money to help two families on the team that lost household items and one family who lost the first floor of their home.

The Girls-Under-11 Manorville Starz adopted their division opponents, the Lindenhurst Lightning. “When they found out about the devastation in our community, their soccer families got together and put together donations for our community,” Lindenhurst Coach Tina Sarnicola said of the Manorville team. “Kristin (Mahoney), their head coach, drove out with an SUV load of donations.

She drove out again the next day with donations, and they have also helped arrange a truck from Virginia to come with more supplies.”

The Deer Park Soccer Club held a collection drive on Sunday, November 9th at their intramural fields. The donations of food, clothing and household goods were incredible.

Through a church in Deer Park, they were able to get the donations to the town of Lindenhurst to distribute to people in need. They also collected $533 which is being donated to the Red Cross.

The Bay Shore Soccer Club had a food and coat drive to benefit Hurricane Sandy victims and adopted several local families for Thanksgiving.

The East Islip Soccer Club, assisted by the neighboring West Islip Soccer Club, hosted nearly 70 intramural and travel teams on November 18th and 19th in their “Soccer Over Sandy” tournament. $28,000 was raised for Hurricane Sandy relief and East Islip also made a $2,500 donation to the EJ Autism Foundation.

The Auburndale Soccer Club in Queens collected

money for a local family affected by the hurricane.

The family has a child that plays for Auburndale, and once they heard that they lost their home and personal belongings, they started a collection at the club’s annual dinner dance. Over $1,100 was raised that night, which was matched by the club.

Then a group of five coaches made additional donations to bring the total to $5,000.

Auburndale was also able to set up a pick-up location through the club and shipped three truckloads of clothes and food to Staten Island.

Breakaway, a training organization that works with SIYSL clubs, hosted a charity indoor soccer tournament, “Staten Island Soccer Over Sandy.” The tourney was held at the Victory Sports Arena on Veteran’s Day and raised $5,000 for the Staten Island families most affected, including the Dresch family, which lost father George and 13year-old daughter Angela.

Clubs that participated were Notre Dame Academy, Richmondtown, St. John Newman, Silver Lake and Staten Island United.

SIYSL club Our Lady Help of Christians hosted 65 teams on December 8th in OLHC’s Playing for Angels tourney. This indoor/outdoor tournament was played at IS34, Angela Dresch’s school. $10,000 was raised for Dresch Family Funds and OLHC Hurricane Relief.

Every player received a bracelet and tournament T-shirt in purple, which was Angela’s favorite color.

In the wake of the devastation left behind by Superstorm Sandy, many across Long Island were left with nothing. When the students at Islip Middle School heard of the destruction to the Island Park School District, they decided to take action.

In an effort organized by school social worker Shari Pennington, the Islip students “adopted” Island Park’s Lincoln Orens Middle School. Through various fundraisers and donations, the Islip

students collected funds that were used to purchase gift cards, games and school supplies.

Students in John Wenzel’s technology class went the extra mile and built an Adirondack chair, which was raffled off to help raise funds.

On December 14th, Ms. Pennington and Islip Middle School Assistant Principal Chad Walerstein delivered the goods to the Island Park school. “They were so grateful for everything we brought for them,” said Ms.

Pennington. “They lost so much in the storm and were quite overwhelmed with the generosity shown by our students and school.”

In addition to the gifts, the packages included letters and poems of encouragement from Steve Taff’s English classes and artwork designed by Laura Vogelsberg’s art students. According to Ms. Pennington, the Island Park school displayed the notes and artwork in their front lobby.

Ambassadors Of Good Will

On December 13th, members of the Islip High School Gay-Straight Alliance and Students Together Against Racism, along with their advisers Janet Schlageter and Melissa Grucci, attended ADOPT-A-SCHOOL - Island Park Principal John Barnes, Island Park guidance the Islip Town Anti-Bias counselor Andrea Cutler, Islip Assistant Principal Chad Walerstein, Island Park Task Force’s Ambassador superintendent Dr. Rosmarie T. Bovino and Islip social worker Shari Pennington.

During the program, the important subject matters of bias, prejudice, discrimination and bullying were discussed with the students through the use of guest speakers and videos. Additionally, the students met with other Town of Islip students and shared ideas

during small-group discussions on how to be “upstanders.”

The students will return to Town Hall to complete the program on February 28th, at which time each student will be sworn in as an ambassador of good will.

Flutist Leah Stevens, a junior at the high school and a member of East Islip’s Tri-M Music Honor Society, performed as principal flute in the AllState Symphonic Band.

An eighth-grader at East Islip Middle School, Michael Stevens displayed his technical prowess at the All-State Piano Showcase.

“The concerts and performances were

outstanding examples of highly complicated and advanced collegiate-level material, conducted by famous conductors including Anthony Maiello and Dr. Jonathan Babcock,” said Stephen Guarino, East Islip’s director of art and music.

“Our young East Islip musicians played with sophistication and poise and helped spread East Islip pride beyond the local community.”

Tom DiOrio, Paige Epstein, Erin Geraghty, Jake Osburn and Kyra Walls portrayed a quintet of Department of Justice officers.

Caturano, Clemens, Connolly, Danz, DeMaio, Kenyon and Willdig are veterans of the Drama Club’s 2011 production, “Our Town,” while Biondi, Connolly and Kenyon were among those who performed in last year’s school music, “Carnival!”

Impressive set designs for the event were constructed by art teacher and scenic painter Dan Figliozzi and his class, while Christopher Kenyon was responsible for designing the play’s poster. Stage managers DiOrio and Osburn handled sound and lights.

The adept stage crew – Epstein, Geraghty, Ashley Karlin, Jessica Sabal and Walls – were kept busy.

DeMaio, Geraghty and Sabal also served as production assistants for

Jeffares.

The original production of You Can’t Take It with You opened in 1936 and played for 837 performances, winning the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The 1938 film version, directed by Frank Capra and featuring stars like Jimmy Stewart and Arthur Murray, won 1938 Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director.

Acting in such a period production proved educational for East Islip’s thespians. “It’s a hilarious and touching play centering around a loveable and wacky family that judges the quality of their lives not by money or fame, but by fulfilling their artistic talents and just having fun,” said Jeffares. “The show was a history lesson for the performers. We spent a lot of time researching unfamiliar references in the script and comparing life today with life back then. It was an eye-opener for the students to realize that the family in the play only had a radio and a telephone in their home, and those were rarely used.”

One thing Jeffares is sure of is how much fun the performances were for students and audience alike. “Feedback from the audience was hearty laughter all the way through the show,” she said. “You Can’t Take It with You was insanely funny,” added Board of Education trustee Glenn Reed. “A timeless classic brought to life by a very talented and funny cast of students.”

Laughter was in the air as the East Islip High School Drama Club presented the George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart comedy You Can’t Take It with You last weekend, performing to sellout crowds in the school’s own theater.

The strong demand for tickets led to an additional Sunday matinee following their two evening shows.

“We presented ‘You Can’t Take It with You’ on December 7th and 8th as scheduled,” explained Drama Club director Susan Jeffares, “but the club was thrilled to add a third show on December 9th due to phenomenal ticket sales. We were sold out on Friday and Saturday and entertained 80 people at our Sunday show.”

The entire production almost didn’t happen due to district budgetary cuts, but the ever-generous For the Kids Foundation of East Islip came to the rescue. “My heartfelt thanks go out to the FTK Foundation who stepped in and sponsored the Drama Club this year,” Jeffares remarked. “They provided more than 25 students the opportunity to work together as a family and produce a show that made us all proud. As a director, I experienced working with a wonderful group of students who had a goal in mind and worked hard through months of rehearsal and even a hurricane to fulfill that goal.”

This year’s Brook Avenue School PFA Breakfast with Frosty and Holiday Fair was a runaway success with parents, students and faculty alike. Parents were welcomed in and guided by members of the PFA while some faculty, among them Brook Avenue Principal Mrs. Vorwald, rolled up their sleeves with Head Lunch Lady Debbie to serve families restaurant-style. Lopiccolo was referring to the December 6th Meet My Mentor Breakfast, the second in a three-part mentoring event series sponsored by the East Islip/Dowling School Business Partnership’s Career Development Committee, preceded by the Catch-a Career Breakfast on October 24th.

Many of the 93 students participating in East Islip’s mentoring program were in attendance at the breakfast, held in the high school’s library. “They were able to meet someone in their desired career field and begin a relationship with a mentor,” said Lopiccolo.

“These mentors can provide students with a hands-on experience that will offer them great insight into their future.”

She credits School Business Partnership member Beth Abesamis for much of the hard work and diligence involved in placing the students with the right mentors.

Family Fun Night

On November 16th, Gardiner Manor ESL teachers Mrs. Chaikin and Mrs. Richard hosted the first ESL Family Fun Night of the 2012-2013 school year.

The night began with families playing different games together, including Jenga, Boggle, Dominoes, Twister and Ring Toss.

Some families even brought in games from their native countries to

share.

After playing several rounds of games, the 4th grade ESL students presented a Reader's Theatre play about how the Cherokee invented a writing system for their language, entitled Leaves Can’t Talk.

The student performers worked very hard to authentically portray the characters, even creating Native American headdresses to wear as

part of their costumes.

The evening closed with a short presentation about the importance of reading at home, as well as ice cream sundaes for all. As families left, Mrs. Chaikin and Mrs. Richard provided them with free books and a booklet to use when working with their children at home.

The evening truly lived up to its name.

IB Program

On December 12th, several students from Bay Shore High School’s I n t e r n a t i o n a l Baccalaureate History courses participated in the first of three Intergenerational Roundtable events at the Gurwin Jewish Assisted Living facility in Commack.

The program aimed to engage students from four Long Island school districts in dialogue with residents who were eyewitnesses to major historical events. The

theme of this first event was World War II; the veterans described their leadership in unique experiences such as upholding martial law after the Pearl Harbor attack, combat at Okinawa, fighting in General Patton’s army, and earning the Purple Heart.

High School IB History students integrated this opportunity with their studies of methods in the history discipline such as perspective and primary source accounts.

Bay Shore’s participation in the event was facilitated by Principal Mr. Rob Pashkin, Director of Social Studies Mr. Joe Lemke, and IB Program Coordinator Mr. Jon Nelson. Mr. Lemke and IB History teachers Mrs. Maddy Padilla and Mr. Justin Martinich will be escorting students to u p c o m i n g Intergenerational Roundtables focused on the Holocaust and Immigration in the upcoming months.

Stony Brook Awarded Grant Stony Brook University School of Nursing (SON) has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) which will be used to fund scholarships designed to expand enrollment to help address the nationwide nursing shortage and increase the diversity of nursing professionals. The grant will be matched by the Simons Foundation Challenge Grant for a total impact of $200,000.

The RWJF’s “New Careers in Nursing Program” grant enables the SON to provide ten $10,000 individual scholarships in 2013 to college graduates without nursing degrees who will enroll in the Accelerated Baccalaureate Program next June.

The $100,000 Simons match will support the academic progression of three RWJF scholars enrolled in the Accelerated Baccalaureate Program to the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program. These scholarships are in support of a RWJF initiative, in collaboration with the Institute of Medicine, which places a premium on advancing the level of education for nurses nationwide to accompany the need for more nurses. The goal is for schools of nursing to build their resources to prepare more students at the graduate level for professional roles in advanced practices, leadership, teaching, and research.

“These scholarships make it possible for promising new students to enter the profession, advance their education, and facilitate the rapid entry of new nurses into the workforce,” said Lori Escallier, PhD, RN, CPNP, Associate Dean for Evaluation and Outcomes and Clinical Professor in the School of Nursing. “The support we are receiving from the Robert Wood Johnson

Foundation and the Simons Foundation will also help us further grow nursing research and higher education within our program.”

“With the additional support from the Simons Foundation, the top performers in the RWJF scholars program will have an opportunity to move quickly to

develop the most advanced nursing skills and become well-prepared to train and educate other nurses in best practices,” said Dr. Lee Anne Xippolitos, Dean, of the School of Nursing. “There is a shortage of both nurse practitioners and nurse educators, and promoting seamless academic progression in nursing is a step toward alleviating these shortcomings in clinical and academic settings.”

Dr. Xippolitos added that scholarships like those supported by the Simons Foundation will serve as a pipeline to growing Stony Brook’s DNP Program. She explained that students moving quickly from the Accelerated Baccalaureate Program to the DNP Program will also have clinical practice opportunities at

Sharing The Joy

Families all over Long Island and NJ, like the Zaborowski’s (pictured) of Lindenhurst, an area hard hit by Sandy, gathered at their neighborhood Applebee’s on Saturday, December 8th for Breakfast with Santa to help raise monies for the USMC’s Toys for Tots drive.

While Santa heard the wishes of every good girl and boy, every penny raised from the breakfast event and from the sale of colorful paper “gift packages” strung around the restaurants was donated to Toys for Tots.

In total, more than $250,000 has been raised so far to help brighten the

holidays of underprivileged children in our local communities and for families affected by Hurricane Sandy. In support of the program, paper “gift packages” will remain on sale at all Nassau or Suffolk Applebee’s through 12/31.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected that more than one million new and replacement nurses will be needed by the year 2016. The Bureau also estimates that employment for registered nurses is expected to grow 26 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations. In addition to increasing nurse numbers, the National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice, policy advisors to Congress, agrees that diversifying the nursing profession is essential to meeting the health care needs of the nation.

“While the number of underrepresented nurses has increased, the current amount is still inadequate to meet the needs of underrepresented populations on Long Island and the New York Metropolitan area,” said Dr. Escallier. “Studies indicate that patients respond better when care instructions are delivered in their own language and their cultural background is taken into account. For these reasons, we will continue to increase our support of underrepresented students within the School of Nursing.”

As a result of previous RWJF grants, the SON’s Accelerated Baccalaureate Program has graduated 23 RWJF scholars. One of the stipulations of the RWJF grant is that enrollment increases. Currently, 62 students are enrolled in the Accelerated Baccalaureate Program. The SON expects to continue increasing enrollment for the program. Thirty-two students are enrolled in the DNP Program.

vendors selling jewelry, accessories, candles, holiday centerpieces as well as other assorted items. The residents also participated by making handmade bracelets and selling them to raise funds to purchase bicycles for families in need.

Due the generosity of staff and visitors enough

money was raised to purchase two bicycles and helmets. This gave the residents a wonderful feeling of giving back to all those who support them throughout the year.

This was a great event in which families, staff and community came together for such a great cause.

CHRISTMAS COOKIES WITH SANTA - On Thursday, December 13th, Good Samaritan Nursing Home, located at 101 Elm Street in Sayville, hosted its first Christmas Cookies with Santa event. The evening was a huge success in which families, staff and residents enjoyed Christmas entertainment, children activities and a special visit from Santa. Each child received a special gift to take away as a remembrance of this event. This was a great family event in which everyone came together to give our residents a feeling of a celebration in their home.

Volunteers will have the capacity to communicate with each other and serve as the “eyes and ears” for the police if active intervention is required.

Volunteers will be required to attend training, pass a background check and exhibit a willingness to work collaboratively to provide positive direction to children and youth.

Volunteers must be available at least one day each week between 2:30 and 4 p.m., Monday

through Friday.

Volunteers will make a meaningful difference in the lives of our community’s children by ensuring safe passage on the way home from school. Having a caring adult present in the lives of children has been proven to increase their likelihood of success in school and in social situations with peers.

Long Island Cares, Inc. The Harry Chapin Food Bank received a $50,000 contribution to help address Long Island’s emergency food needs in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The grant – which was given to the regional food bank through the Walmart Foundation’s NY State Giving Program – will provide much needed food and supplies for the many families devastated by the horrendous storm that ravaged Long Island.

Robin Amato, Long Island Cares Director of Development and Communications, was grateful for the financial support.
