Polar Express Rolls In he Polar Express rolled into town at Academy Street Elementary School in late December, calling aboard the school’s first-grade students for a fun and unique English Language Arts assignment. After having their tickets received by “conductor” and music teacher Jim Cesare and Principal Kerry Vann, the students gathered in the cafeteria to listen as Ms. Vann read aloud the familiar holiday tale. PEDIATRIC URGENT CARE

The Stony Brook University School of Journalism received a $50,000 gift from Elaine Crosson and her son Daniel, to establish The Matthew T. Crosson Memorial Scholarship In Journalism which will endow a scholarship to support young journalists who wish to carry on the pursuit of public affairs journalism and advance public discourse for which the late Matt Crosson was so well known. A portion of the funding comes from donations from family and friends, and the full $50,000 will be matched by a special grant to Stony Brook University by Jim and Marilyn Simons and the Simons Foundation, resulting in an impact of $100,000. The endowment will continue to be funded with additional donations from the community.

Matt Crosson, the beloved and highly-touted former President of the Long Island Association, a title he held for 16 years, died unexpectedly on December 23rd, 2010 from complications following a stroke. He resigned from the LIA earlier that year and accepted a job as the Chief Executive Officer of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce. Following his death, Elaine and Dan, who is now 14, moved back to their home on Long Island after Elaine accepted a position at Stony Brook University as Vice President for External Relations. “It has been two years since Matt passed away and Daniel and I still miss him so much, as does the rest of his family, and so many others who knew and loved him,” said Elaine Crosson, JD, Crosson’s wife of 17 years. “Dan and I wanted to

make this gift now to commemorate Matt’s legacy as a great advocate for public dialogue, and to provide others an opportunity to honor his memory. “Matt was an attorney not a journalist by trade, yet his appreciation for the written word and his belief in responsible journalism was fierce, so in addition to his primary role of advancing economic development for Long Island, it was his personal mission to bring to fore the most pressing current affairs issues facing this community and all of New York by engaging some of the most relevant public figures and luminaries in our country in a personal dialogue right here in our own back yard. “The Matthew T. Crosson Memorial Scholarship endowment is meant to foster that mission, to keep the

vision alive by supporting journalists in training at Stony Brook who will carry on the pursuit of public discourse that Matt so cherished.” The Crosson scholarship will be available to a qualifying full-time junior or senior enrolled in the School of Journalism at Stony Brook University, where Jim Klurfeld, Crosson’s friend and longtime cohost of the public affairs program “Cutting Edge,” is a professor. The recipient must demonstrate a desire to pursue a career in journalism with a demonstrated interest in public affairs. The recipient will also have the opportunity to intern at Newsday or at News 12 Long Island and Newsday.com or a special rotating internship at all three news outlets. One recipient per year beginning in the Fall

2013 academic year will be chosen by a selected committee appointed by School of Journalism School Dean, Howard Schneider. “This scholarship will be invaluable in supporting students, year-after-year, whose passion will be to pursue reporting in the public interest,” said Schneider. “I can think of nothing more important.” “This is not only a wonderful development for our program but wholly appropriate that it should be in Matt Crosson’s name,” said Klurfeld. “Whether he was a prosecutor, running the New York State Court system, heading the LIA or hosting a regular public affairs television show, Matt's goal was always to find the truth. That, of course, is also the goal of journalism.”

Army Angels The Suffolk County Treasurer’s Office, along with Real Property, State Aid, Title Searchers, Suffolk County Clerk’s Office, Legislator’s Office, and Early Intervention supplied gifts for Salvation Army Angels and Families this year. Rebekah Gilmore chaired the committee to oversee the project, and Crystal DeLuca assisted with the enormous project. Through the efforts of all involved, 66 individual children along with 4 families will be enjoying a little more “Christmas Spirit” this holiday. “The outpouring of generosity in this building never ceases to amaze me. Better Than Ever

Two days into 2013… so how is your year going? Have you given up on those promising New Year’s resolutions yet? Has your self-proclaimed “fresh start” gone by the wayside already? Two days in, and you’re wishing for 2014? Funny as it sounds, this is precisely the mentality many have when it comes to their failed attempts to remake their lives. One and done, so to speak, which is silly when you consider there are 365

days in a year, with countless opportunities for derailment during each and every one of them. Odds are, complications will arise at some point. Sure, there are days when frustrations are bound to get the better of us. Weeks even. But what is life if not a journey laid out before us, with twists and turns along the way? Some choose to stay the course, while others prefer the road less traveled – it all depends upon our respective mentalities, which, as we all well know, can change moment to

moment. The New Year is just another one of those days, for better or worse. It is what you choose to make of it, to a point. Only certain things are within our control; other aspects need be left up to fate. After all, what’s that they say about “the best laid plans”? Exactly. Don’t bother making them. So maintain that sense of optimism. Don’t despair quite yet. There are precisely 363 more days left to get it right. Good luck. And Happy New Year :)

On Sunday, December 9th, Our Lady of Consolation Nursing & Rehabilitative Care Center hosted their 4th Annual Christmas Family Festival at Timber Point Country Club in Great River. This brunch was a day to celebrate the Christmas season with family, residents, staff and local community members. Musical entertainment was provided along with many children’s craft

activities and a surprise visit from Santa. This year we honored Mr. Robert Valli, retired Vice President HSBC, Public Banking, as well as Chairman of Our Lady of Consolation’s Foundation. “Bob was chosen for this honor due to his long term commitment and dedication to Our Lady of Consolation as well as to his community,” stated Joseph Tomaino, President/CEO of Our

Lady of Consolation. This event raised over $40,000 which will go directly to benefit programs and services for the residents and patients of Our Lady of Consolation. Prize Sharing The Good Samaritan Hospital Guilds collected $6,000 from their annual holiday 50/50 raffle. Raffles were sold in the hospital’s lobby and door to door by Guild members. This year’s first place winner, Rocco Oppedisano, with Good Samaritan’s Plant Engineering Department decided to use his share of the funds to help make a needy family’s Christmas memorable by purchasing gifts for a family identified by his church.

Mr. Oppedisano is no stranger to helping others. Since the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, he has been volunteering with Evangel Church of God in Lindenhurst, bringing supplies and doing free demolition work on victim’s homes. “I feel blessed to not only have won the Guild’s 50/50 raffle but to be able to share the winnings to bring Christmas to a family that might not have had one,” said Mr. Oppedisano.

All Aboard The Polar Express rolled into town at Academy Street Elementary School in late December, calling aboard the school’s firstgrade students for a fun and unique English

language arts assignment. After having their tickets received by “conductor” and music teacher Jim Cesare and Principal Kerry Vann, the students gathered in the

cafeteria to listen as Ms. Vann read aloud the familiar holiday tale. The beautiful pictures from the story were projected on a white screen in the room in

order for the students to better visualize the story’s messages. Just as in the book, the students were treated to a cup of hot cocoa and a snack after the read-a-loud was

As a fitting addition to the holiday season, Fire Island students, teachers, parents, community members and alumni gathered at Woodhull Elementary School to enjoy a production of Happy, The High-Tech Snowman, an original musical featuring the school’s entire student body. As it was the first assembly since Hurricane Sandy devastated many parts of the island, prior to the performance Superintendent Loretta Ferraro paid tribute to the efforts of the school staff in providing continuity for students through challenging and uncertain times. Indeed, it was not certain the performance would even be held at Woodhull when the decision was made to move forward with the original performance date and begin rehearsals while the school was still operating out of William Floyd Elementary. Following the show, teachers Gaby Donovan and Karen McNulty gave a heartfelt introduction to the slideshow presentation “There’s No Place Like Home,” comprised of photos taken at William Floyd. It was a memorable night, capped by a surprise visit from a special jolly guest and a reception prepared by members of the Fire Island staff.

Superstorm Sandy could not sweep aside the efforts of the Sayville High School Art Club to hold the Fifth Annual “Empty Bowls” soup/salad dinner fundraising in recognition of National Hunger Awareness Month (October). Rescheduled several weeks after originally planned, the artdepartment sponsored event, under the direction of John Verschure, Debbie Urso, and Evan Hammer, and in conjunction with the Sayville School Employees Charitable Foundation, was a feast of tossed greens, warm rolls, and all-you-can-eat homemade soups, thanks to the great generosity of Sayville faculty, students, families, and such local merchants as Tom’s Deli,

Idle Hour Deli, Crickets, and Wenner Bread. In addition, for the price of a $10 admission ticket, attendees not only enjoyed a soup/salad dinner, but were able to select a oneof-a-kind handmade ceramic bowl created by Sayville High School Art students and teachers. “John Verschure did an excellent job organizing and running the event,” Art Department Chairperson Debbie Urso said. “This year, due to Hurricane Sandy, several more staff members pitched in to make soup.” As Mrs. Urso explained, some faculty members have annually contributed delicious recipes to the worthy cause. However, many local merchants, who also had donated food in the past, were either

directly affected by the storm or were already making donations to the local organizations serving the displaced families. Mrs. Urso was pleased that “everyone in the art department, including the teachers at the elementary level pitched in with the food.” Of course, this Empty Bowls event “cannot run without the student volunteers each year. They were a tremendous help!” The money raised helped many within our Sayville community. Proceeds from this event, which totaled $900 this year, benefitted both the Greater Sayville Food Pantry and local school community members victimized by Superstorm Sandy.

On November 15th, Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School (OBMS) Principal Ms. Susanne Bailey welcomed close to 250 members of the community for what she referred to as a “… chance for some normalcy in a comfortable and familiar place.” With the support of Chrissy Coyne, Director of Training for the Applebee’s Restaurant chain (and Connetquot graduate!), a Family Fun night was provided at OBMS for those in the community affected by this Sandy Super-Storm. 20 Applebee’s employees volunteered to help out for this special night. Coyne had been contacted by OBMS Math teacher Nicole Quillo who asked whether Applebee’s was in a position to help relieve some of the hardships suffered by members of the community. Working with Ms. Bailey and Dr. Pincus, Chrissy Coyne suggested “ … an evening where the community could come together, connect and reflect.” She gave much of the credit

As a result of the severe damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, and subsequent storm, residents of the Connetquot School District joined forces to help their neighbors by providing food, water, clothing as well as helping to clean up their neighborhoods of fallen trees and debris. In the Oakdale community, which was the hardest-hit within the district, neighbors, students, teachers, staff and administration of the Idle Hour (IH) Elementary School, and OakdaleBohemia Middle School organized Family Fun Nights for local residents. At the Idle Hour Elementary School, on November 14th, the PTA and staff hosted a pasta dinner for the Oakdale community. The PTA provided a variety of pasta dishes, the staff provided baked goods and beverages, while Mama’s Pizzeria, in Oakdale, donated tasty Italian dishes. Parent & staff volunteers served the community during the evening meal. The Idle Hour hallway was filled with donated toiletries, cleaning supplies, food, paper products, water and other items for the guests to take with them following dinner. The donated items were collected by 5th grade students from the John Pearl Elementary School (Bohemia, NY). Toiletry caddies were prepared for

VP Lee Kennedy, and Trustees Kim Pepe, Michael D. Kealey and Leo R. Marinick in support of the children of Connetquot. These commendations, signed by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, N.Y. State Senator Owen H. Johnson, N.Y.State Assemblyman Al Graf and County Legislator William J. Lindsay, recognized the admirable achievements that are an inspiration to the citizens of Suffolk County, and New York State. Legislator Rob Calarco was proud to join with the FIRST Robotics Team, Patchogue-Medford High School to coordinate a food and toy drive for the needy. The Robotics Team, which is comprised of 67 members, threw all of its energy into collecting enough food to provide 18 large boxes of nonperishables and diapers and over 100 wrapped toys to 27 homeless teen mothers and their infants and six needy families. The group, along with their advisors, worked to individualize the drive so that one family also

received two large bags of clothing, while the 27 young moms each received a special gift for themselves. The team also donated a large amount of collected non-perishables to Long Island Cares and extra toys to help out the Town of Brookhaven with its toy drive. Leg. Calarco opened up his very decorated office to the families from 3 to 6 pm. During that time, Robotics team members played Santa and his elves and handed out cookies and juice to the little ones, while other team members supplied parents

with extra toys in bags so they could surprise their children on Christmas Day. “I have never met a better group of young people than the members of Pat-Med’s FIRST Robotics Team. They are smart, hard-working, and socially-conscious. When those children saw Santa their eyes lit up. And it was beyond heartwarming to be able to help parents who had no other way to provide Christmas for their families. Smiles lit up the conference room of the Stony Brook Medicine Department of Radiation Oncology almost as much as its decorated “winter wonderland” theme when the doctors, nurses and staff surprised Maria Golden, 45, a wheelchairbound cerebral palsy patient, with a Christmas party to celebrate the season and her recent

completion of radiation treatment. Golden grew up in foster homes and now lives in a group home in Ridge. Inspired by Golden’s personal triumphs living with limited mobility and other disabilities, the staff decided to surprise her with a luncheon party and lots of gifts. Among them fleece blankets, warm

socks, make up, stuffed animals, pajamas, and DVDs. Around the holiday season, the Department of Radiation Oncology holds a party that is sometimes a tribute to a patient. As a contribution, the staff donates gifts to that patient and pitches in to decorate the party room with some of the patient’s favorite holiday themes.
