ecognizing that those less fortunate are not only in need of assistance during the holiday season but all year long, the National Honor Society at Bayport-Blue Point High School recently concluded a Personal Care Product Drive for the homeless in Suffolk County. The students have been hosting such a collection for the past three years, the past two of which provided hygiene care packs to more than 550 homeless adults and children.

VICTORIAN TEA - Connetquot Central School District’s Ronkonkoma Middle School recently held the 3rd Annual Victorian Tea Party. Students researched Victorian games, social issues and fashion to prepare for the party. The students dressed in clothes of the time period and enjoyed eating and playing games with their peers. The Town of Brookhaven’s Parks and Recreation will be offering Yoga classes for adults. Sessions will consist of Yoga postures, breathing exercises and deep relaxation to revitalized

Connetquot Central School District’s Board of Education recently recognized several individuals, school and organizations for their efforts in helping the community. Connetquot High School Robotics Team advisors
Faud Bissar and Patrick Hughes were congratulated for their successful request of a $3,000 Rockwell Grant for the Robotics Club to help them attend two regional competitions. The Lakeland Fire Department was thanked for their financial assistance to
families that suffered from Hurricane Sandy. The Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School and the Applebee’s Restaurant chain were also recognized for organizing Family Fun Nights for other families affected by the hurricane.

Influenza in New York State (NYS) has been widespread for the past two months and is significantly more prevalent at this time of year as compared to the past several years. To date, there have been more than 19,000 laboratory-confirmed cases reported since seasonal influenza testing began in October 2012, compared to 4,400 cases during all of the 2011-2012 influenza season. Currently, there have been 2,884 laboratory confirmed hospitalizations associated with influenza. There are 2 reported pediatric influenza-related deaths on LI. In light of the widespread influenza activity across NYS and most of the nation, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) continues to strongly advise all New Yorkers who have not already received their influenza vaccine to do so immediately. Ask your friends to get vaccinated. • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage. • Stay away from people who are sick. • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. • If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area. • Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by
wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label). Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of withholding vaccines? A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable. Get Vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2012-2013 season vaccine is available in your area. If you do contract the flu, talk to your doctor about antivirals. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that can be used for prevention or treatment of flu viruses. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them. • Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose. • Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself. • Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death, especially in the very young or old, pregnant women or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. Q: Who should get the flu vaccine? A: Beginning this year with the 2012-2013 influenza season, the CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine each year. The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each year.
Q: What types of vaccinations are available? A: The two types of flu vaccines are: • The “flu shot”: an inactivated vaccine which contains killed virus that is given by injection. It is approved for use in people 6 months of age and older, including healthy people, people with chronic medical conditions and pregnant women. • The nasal spray flu vaccine: a vaccine made with live, but weakened, flu virus that cannot cause the flu in a healthy person. This is approved for use in healthy people 2-49 years old (not pregnant). Q: What are the Side Effects of the two vaccine types? A: Different side effects can be associated with the flu shot and nasal vaccine. The flu shot: You cannot get the flu from a flu shot. Some minor side effects that could occur are: soreness, redness, or swelling at the site of injection, low-grade fever, muscle aches. If they are going to occur at all, they begin soon after the vaccination and usually last 1 to 2 days. Almost all people who receive influenza vaccine have no problems from it. The nasal spray: The nasal-spray vaccine has weakened viruses

The moment when all the pointless discourse and frantic commotion dissolves into simple background noise. Peace and quiet…and clarity. We all strive for this. And often, we would not find it so difficult to achieve – if not for the distraction of others. Ah, but to live a solitary life devoid of all nuisance…what kind of existence would that be? And so we must learn to tolerate, to adjust, to find that happy medium between blatant rudeness and healthy…

We should only become caught up in those things which are healthy and beneficial to us in the long run. Leave the rest behind. The problem is that, while, philosophically, this theory makes perfect sense, putting it into practice is far easier said than done when faced with reality. Anyone who deals with people on a daily basis, whether complete strangers or those near and dear, can surely attest to this fact. Love them or hate them, we are destined to clash with others more often than
not. It’s simple human nature. The trick is to save these so-called “battles” for the important issues. And while, in the heat of the moment, each and every issue may seem equally dire, rest assured, they are not. Take a step back, take a deep breath, and heed the following: “Frame every so-called disaster with these words: In five years, will this matter?” In most cases, the answer will be a clear and unequivocal “no.” So move on. Let it go. Forgive and forget. Don’t allow yourself to get hung up on the small stuff. In five years’ time, it won’t matter. Focus on today – and finding that elusive peace within yourself.

For the past three years, students in teacher Art Pagano’s Facilities Maintenance program at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Islip Career Center (ICC) have had the opportunity to participate in on-thejob training at Papa John’s Pizza in Medford. This program offers students practical experience that can lead to entry-level skills in maintenance occupations. Mr. Pagano said, “We travel to Papa John’s once a week and spend about an hour performing janitorial duties. It’s valuable experience for the students to learn how to clean per industry standard. January is National Stalking Awareness Month, and Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco wants to bring more awareness to this crime that affects approximately 6.6 million victims each year. Stalking is a complex crime characterized by a course of conduct directed at a specific person that would cause that person fear. Stalking may take many forms, such as assaults, threats, vandalism, burglary, or animal abuse, as well as unwanted cards, calls, gifts, or visits. Stalkers will also use technology, such as computers, global positioning system devices, or hidden cameras, to track a victim’s daily activities. Sheriff DeMarco advises individuals who are victimized by stalking behavior to keep accurate records of their perpetrator’s actions and to seek help from
law enforcement and the courts. “Always call 911 if you are in any immediate danger, and trust your instincts. Begin to collect any emails, phone messages, notes and any other evidence when you feel uncomfortable in your interactions with another individual,” he said. “Information collected over the course of time can be very helpful to law enforcement and if you need to seek a court order of protection,” DeMarco added. Victims of stalking and domestic violence often suffer from constant anxiety and fear about their safety. Sheriff DeMarco offers information about applying for an order of protection, and the Sheriff’s Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification program (SAVIN-NY) on his website at www.suffolksheriff. com.

Teaming up with the Suffolk County Department of Social Services, the students inspired their peers to donate personal hygiene products – toothbrushes, toothpaste, body wash, shampoo and washcloths – during their homeroom periods. Thanks to the support of the school’s students and staff, this year the NHS members were able collect
more than 1,000 items and create more than 200 care packages for the county’s homeless. “Currently there are 225 homeless individuals in the county. The students’ efforts will provide enough resources to assist almost our entire homeless individual population,” stated Department of Social Services representative Cate Clifford. “We often think about giving to others during the holiday season, but as these individuals’ personal struggles continue all year long, it is important to continue to remember to help them during the other times of the year.”
Twenty talented music students from Music Simply Music, Long Island’s leading in-home music education program, paid a visit recently to the Momentum at South Bay for Rehabilitation & Nursing Home in East Islip to stage a cheerful musical performance for elderly residents and patients. As part of its “Share My Music” community outreach program, Music Simply Music arranged for 20 of its students ranging in age from 8 to 40 to play specially-learned songs for residents from the 1930’s and 1940’s, including nostalgic piano pieces, acoustic guitar and vocals. “Over 40 Momentum residents were treated to an afternoon of music, thanks to our talented,
community-minded musicians,” said Nick Ambrosino, Founder and Director, Music Simply Music. “I would like to thank Momentum for allowing us to share the gift of music with their residents. Recognizing that those less fortunate are not only in need of assistance during the holiday season but all year long, the National Honor Society at Bayport-Blue Point High School recently concluded a personal care product drive for the homeless in Suffolk County. The students have been hosting such a collection for the past three years, the past two of which provided hygiene care packs to more than 550 homeless adults and children. “Homelessness is a problem that is not limited to communities far away from ours,” NHS adviser Donna Edgar stated. “It affects individuals as close as our own neighborhoods

Celebrating Dr. King At the Premm Learning Center in Oakdale students are celebrating 31 Days of Dr. Martin Luther King and Black History Month. The students will march for peace around the school building and release balloons at the flag pole. Students will discuss their dreams and goals and create a picture timeline of Dr. Martin Luther King’s life and accomplishments. Friendship is very important, so students
will create a rainbow of friendship and list of ingredients necessary for friendships. They will also create a mural Hands That Touch The Heart. They will trace their hands and place them inside a heart that was cut from construction paper. For 31 days, students will be reading several stories and simple books about Dr. Martin Luther King’s life, listening to his speech and making a snack
using bread cut into circles (that represents the earth) and chocolate, peanut butter and vanilla chips to represent people that share the earth. There will be ongoing lessons about non-violence and ways to bring about peace, students will have the opportunity to create diorama’s, sing songs, and engage in art projects that speak to Sharing The Dream.
BALLROOM DANCE - Connetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School fourth grade students recently demonstrated their ballroom dancing skills for their parents and peers in the school’s first Dancing Classrooms performance. BLUE JEANS FOR RED CROSS - Applebee’s Long Island restaurants were drenched in denim from December 3rd-9th to help raise money for the American Red Cross and its efforts to assist the victims of Hurricane Sandy. The weeklong Blue Jeans for Red Cross program encouraged workers to wear jeans to work each day for a $1 donation to the ARC. In total, Applebee’s staff contributed $4,300 to the cause. Noted Lecturer The large meeting room at the Suffolk Cooperative Library System (SLS) was full with school librarians from across the county who had questions about teaching the new standards. Guest speaker and author Dr. Marc Aronson, hosted by the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Library System (SLS), was there to discuss the implementation of the new Common Core State Standards. “The evolution of K-12 education is upon us,” he said, “and
school librarians are the foundation in creating a common core community.” The new education standards in English/ language arts and mathematics, adopted by 45 states including New York, will prepare students for life after 12th grade. These standards have taken Dr. Aronson down a path of guiding librarians to be, he said, “…in this new world that promotes culling and curating from every source to give young
people opportunities to be in the debate as new ideas come forward. How we change education, librarianship, print and digital books, apps, is important. We need to immerse young people not in receiving knowledge, but in the pursuit of knowledge,” he explained. “Thinking is endorphins for the brain.” His presentation was titled Common Core, Uncommon Challenge.

The award is given annually to an Emergency Department RN from a Suffolk County hospital who exhibits the criteria of leadership, integrity, nurturer, dedication, creativity and
magnanimity. O’Sullivan, RN, TNCC, ENPC, a Mather Hospital ED nurse for eight years, also received Mather’s 2012 RN Community Service Award. “I’m honored to be given this award,” said O’Sullivan, a nurse preceptor who is mentoring the first Emergency Department nursing graduate who was accepted into Mather’s Internship Program. The child and her mother stayed at O’Sullivan’s home for six months, during which time O’Sullivan cared for the child. O’Sullivan is the second Mather Emergency Department nurse to receive the award in the three years it has been given. Liz Devine, RN, Mather’s Emergency Department Nursing Manager, was the first recipient of the award. The Suffolk County Emergency Nurses Association represents 12 hospitals in Suffolk County, with more than 300 members.
Orchestra Openings The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York is inviting high-schoolaged orchestral and vocal musicians to audition for the group’s July 2013 concert tour of Central Europe. The touring MYO Orchestra and Chorus will visit and perform through Germany, Austria and Switzerland. An optional, additional week of touring will be in France. The ensembles have embarked on several international tours over the past years with
concert visits to Central and Eastern Europe, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, China, Spain, Italy, Greece and, last year, to Australia and New Zealand. Community Foundation Grant The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is set to receive a $25,000 grant from the Long Island Community Foundation (LICF) to support the creation of a brand new Military Families in Training (M-FIT) Program designed to educate, support, and strengthen military families. Addiction rates among active duty soldiers, returning veterans and the spouses of service men and women are several times higher than rates seen in the general population. Many of the 175,000 returning soldiers who call Long Island “home” bear the scars of war in the form of untreated mental health issues and active addiction. Major depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are prevalent in this population. Each of those 175,000 returning soldiers has 4-6 immediate family members who, without family centered services, are at increased risk for a wide variety of mental health disorders and other challenges. M-FIT is a dynamic, evidence-based approach to providing military
families with the support they need to live healthy lives. The six-week psycho-educational workshop series targets the root causes of stress and substance abuse in order to end the cycle of addiction. Participants will learn how to deal with stress of deployment, combat and the re-transition back home. The series will seek to enhance family empathy and communication, clarify family boundaries, roles and responsibilities, and strengthen family resiliency among returning service members and their loved ones. The program is open to returning service man and women, their partners, spouses and parents, as well as their children ages 5-15. The six-week series will launch in Southampton, Riverhead, Huntington and Mineola in early 2013, and is expected to serve more than 100 military families on Long Island. “War takes an incredible toll on the emotional and mental health of our veterans and unfortunately they often find themselves fighting another kind of battle at home,” said David Okorn, executive director of LICF. “LICADD
provides our heroes and their families with the counseling and treatment they need and deserve.” LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds says support for M-FIT comes at the perfect time. “With a documented upswing in addiction rates among military members and their families, it is essential that we address the needs of this community and this grant from the Long Island Community Foundation will help make that possible.” The Long Island Community Foundation (LICF) is the Island’s community foundation, making grants to improve our region and helping donors with their philanthropy since 1978. Stony Brook University Cancer Center has initiated a free transportation service for cancer patients to and from their homes throughout Suffolk County in an effort to provide access to care for patients who need chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and have limited resources to get to the Cancer Center. The Non-Emergency Transportation (NET) program began in November and operates Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Recommendations for the service come from Cancer Center social workers; already more than 25 transports have been made.
