The Suffolk County Correctional Facility was highlighted during today’s general meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature as Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco accepted a plaque and recognition from the New York State Sheriffs’ Association for the county jails’ recent re-accreditation and adherence to outstanding operating standards. DeMarco, in accepting the plaque for the correctional facility stated, “Suffolk County’s

correctional system and inmate population is among the largest in the State, which makes it a challenging corrections environment. I couldn’t be more proud of the work of our officers and staff who strive to meet and exceed these rigorous professional standards.” Tom Mitchell, Counsel for the NYS Sheriffs’ Association, added “Significant time and effort is required to meet our stringent accreditation standards, and we

appreciate sheriffs like Vincent DeMarco who are committed to excellence in the field of corrections.” Also present at the ceremony were key members of the accreditation team: Warden Charles Ewald, Lieutenant Richard Macchi and Lieutenant Curtis Sclafani. Your one donation can help save up to three lives and it only takes about an hour of your time. “By rolling up your sleeve, you may help provide lifesaving blood where and when it is needed. This profound, heart-felt act may help save the life of a real person in your community, said Donna M. Morrissey, Director of Communications, Red Cross Northeast Division. “The blood drive has become a staple of the Islanders’ community outreach efforts, Dave Decina, Islanders VP of Corporate Partnerships, said. “It has grown with every event, testifying to the strength of our fans’ communal ties. As an organizational family, we take comfort in knowing our efforts bring us a step closer to a better future. The Red Cross blood drive will take place in the Lower Box Office of

All presenting donors will also receive a voucher for one free entrĂŠe from Moe’s Southwest Grill and have the opportunity to enter to win many great prizes including a luxury suite for ten people at the Saturday, March 9th Islanders game, a catered lunch for 20 from Moe’s Southwest Grill and a Hockey Getaway Package which includes two Islanders game tickets to the March 22nd game, a “High Fiveâ€? opportunity as players come onto the ice, overnight accommodations and breakfast at the Long Island Marriott.*

Before the puck drops on Saturday, February 16th the New York Islanders Hockey Club and the American Red Cross will, for its third year, partner for a blood drive to continue their lifesaving commitment. The blood drive will take place at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. As a special thank you for helping their neighbors, all presenting donors will receive a voucher for two tickets to a 20122013 Islanders regular season home game.* This marks the first of four blood drives the two organizations will host this year. Local donors are needed all year round to ensure the blood supply stays strong. Blood is an essential component for patient care in area hospitals, and the only source of blood is a healthy, volunteer donor.

Mr. John Delio, Principal of Connetquot’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School in Ronkonkoma, along with PTA President Mrs. Jennifer Pasquarella, hosted a Luau on January 10th to kick off the school’s PARP program. Children and parents joined in the fun with costumes, grass skirts, leis, fun music and games. Among the most popular event of the night was dancing under the limbo

stick, for the youngsters and their parents. People As Reading Partners (PARP) is a program designed to foster the level of reading by children, by asking parents to set aside 15 minutes a day to read with their youngsters. Mr. Delio said that “reading creates a strong, positive, influence and establishes good habits that will last a lifetime.â€? Mrs. Pasquarella added that this was a â€œâ€Ś

free, fun, night filled with music, dancing and snacks. The kids had a blast, and are looking forward to reading, even more, with mom and dad. PARP is a program designed to encourage a love of reading in our children. It was developed in 1978 by the late State Senator James Donovan, Chairman of the State Senate Education Committee.

“… a heartfelt project …” for the entire Cherokee community. Not surprisingly, the response to the call for snowflakes has overwhelmed the Newtown community, and the Sandy Hook PTA sent a follow-up notice to students across the country. They thanked the nation’s students, parents and teachers for their thoughtful creations, but asked that the students now use their snowflakes to decorate their own schools, and create their own ‘winter wonderland’ at home.

In the aftermath of the tragedy at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Connecticut, the school’s PTA asked students from around the nation to create paper snowflakes for the children who would attend a new school, in this new year. Connetquot’s Cherokee Street Elementary School Principal Bridgette Wilson, and Student Council advisor Mrs. Kelly Randazzo, asked their students to create hundreds of these colorful paper snowflakes. Mrs. Wilson said that this was a

On Friday evening, January 11th, prior to the team’s wrestling match with local rival Lindenhurst High School, Connetquot administrators and coaches were on hand to receive a prestigious award honoring long-time coach Bill Santoro. Santoro has been inducted to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, which is located in Stillwater, Oklahoma. While the induction took place in April 2012, this night’s award was presented to the school district, and will soon be on permanent display. Among those on hand to accept the award from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame representative Neil Duncan were Board

of Education (BOE) VicePresident Lee Kennedy, Trustee Kim Pepe and Connetquot HS Principal Mr. Greg Murtha. Coach Bill Santoro was an All-League wrestler as a student at Connetquot, graduating in 1967. Continuing his education, and wrestling career, at Brockport State University he graduated in 1971 and returned to the Connetquot School District as an Earth Science teacher, and wrestling coach. He retired from teaching duties in 2012, but continues to coach and further inspire Connetquot wrestlers. Santoro has produced more than 75 All-County wrestlers, one New York State Champion and four high school All-Americans.

His Connetquot Wrestling program has produced 14 County Champions, 10 of whom were name to the All-State Wrestling teams. The program has continued its winning ways so far this season having won the Smithtown, Sayville, Southside and Massapequa High School Wrestling tournaments this year. A confirmation of this year’s talented student-athletes was the team’s 53-13 win against Lindenhurst on the night of the presentation. Congratulations to Coach Santoro, Connetquot Wrestling alumni, and the entire Connetquot community on this proud Hall of Fame achievement!

At St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center we believe that Faith plays an integral role in our residents’ healing process. Understanding the importance of this need, a new chapel was dedicated on the main level of the facility. On January 31st, Bishop William Murphy of the Diocese of Rockville Centre visited St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation

Care Center to bless the new chapel. Fr. Fred Hill, Staff Chaplain, worked tirelessly on building this chapel as a place for peace and quiet moments of prayer. “This chapel has been a dream come true for the residents and staff who now have a place to renew themselves and find peace and comfort. The chapel provides a source of power and inspiration to all that visit or reside within

the facility,” stated Fr. Fred Hill. More than 50 people, consisting of staff, residents, Administration and Board Members joined Bishop Murphy for this special day of prayer and services. Bishop Murphy spent time visiting with the residents and staff, while thanking all for what they do each and every day. It was a special day filled with joy and peace at seeing this chapel come to completion.

60,000 individuals are served through the agency’s Open Arms Employee Assistance Program (EAP). LICADD’s clinical team, under the direction of Clinical Director Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC, is comprised of dedicated and compassionate staff whose professional interests and credentials strengthen the innovative programs and services that LICADD offers. In addition, the agency provides trainings and internship opportunities to over twenty interns each year from graduate level Social Work programs across Long Island and the Greater New York area. “I am honored to accept the award on behalf of our Clinical Team,” stated LICADD Executive Director Jeffrey Reynolds, Ph. D., CEAP, SAP. “We have an exceptionally dedicated staff and their

commitment to their clients shows in each and every interaction.” “LICADD is an exemplary organization,” explained NASW-NYS Executive Director Reinaldo Cardona, MSSW, LCSW, “and we are pleased to bestow the 2013 Agency of the Year Award in light of the remarkable achievements LICADD and its staff continue to make in the field of social work.” Founded in 1955, the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is the largest membership association for professional social workers in the world, with 160,000 members in the United States and overseas. Each year, the New York State Chapter recognizes one agency, department, organization or government entity that best promotes and upholds the Association’s standard of values and ethics while developing innovative approaches to better meet

client needs. In addition to LICADD’s strong track-record of developing evidence-based programing in response to trends in substance abuse and addiction on Long Island, the agency actively pushes for effective public policy as it relates to underage drinking, substance abuse and access to treatment. In 2012, LICADD celebrated the passage of the ISTOP (Internet System for Tracking Over-Prescribing) Act and welcomed Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice to a press conference in the agency’s Mineola office. In Suffolk County, better oversight of sober homes was approved and a Narcan Pilot Program has resulted in more than 30 overdose reversals in the last three months. 2013 marks the 57th year of LICADD, and the

expansion of many of the agency’s core programs including its BUDDY Mentoring, Start 2Stop and Open Arms Employee Assistance Program (EAP). LICADD’s resources not only support individuals dealing with addiction and recovery but address the broad range of issues that friends and loved ones often experience. From sibling and grief and loss support groups, to family education and anger management programs, LICADD offers a comprehensive list of resources from its three offices in Mineola, Ronkonkoma and Riverhead, NY. Carry-On Made Easier (NAPSI)-Doing a little homework before you travel could save you time at the airport. For instance, visiting www.TSA.gov, the Transportation Security Administration’s Web site, can help you learn

what items can be packed in carry-on and which are best left in checked suitcases. You can also learn size requirements for toiletries that are allowed on planes and then find properly sized items in stores.

As a final tip, remember that all carry-on gels, liquids and aerosols need to be placed in a 1-quart, single zip-top, clear plastic bag. For more information and tips, visit www.shave. com.

Dance For Tots

I’m beginning to despise Mother Nature. More specifically, I despise those weather forecasters, news anchors and so-called “reporters” who insist on inciting what amounts to mass hysteria every time a single snowflake or shower is detected on the horizon. Honestly, have we learned nothing from Hurricane Sandy? Back in October, there was plenty of advance warning, to be sure; but how many decided against taking precautionary measures based solely on past precedent? What’s that they say about the boy who cried wolf? Oh, eventually, he will be right…but no one will listen. Fast forward to my most favorite season of all – winter –

with all its blizzards and sleet and ice storms. You know, the season where one flake in the forecast calls for widespread panic. Let’s all run in droves to the stores to snap up every last shovel and snow-blower – “just in case.” Let’s stock up on milk and eggs because, after all, once the power goes out, what better necessities to have on hand? Oh, and let’s not forget to wait in line for gas once again – you know, for all that driving we’ll surely be doing in two feet of snow. Seriously people? Personally, I’m a big fan of waking up, looking out the window and assessing the situation for myself. And if the power goes out, well that’s a whole other ballgame. Then gone are those cozy dreams of being snowed in with nothing but a pile of DVDs and books to catch up on while you bake

cookies and make hot cocoa. Honestly, the last time I truly enjoyed a “snow day,” I was probably about eight years old. It’s a bit different when you need to shovel your way out and work for a living, isn’t it fellow adults? And doesn’t it always seem that the worst weather hits right when you have a million things to do? When you have all these grand plans to be productive and proactive and all that good stuff? So much for that. Best plan: pull the covers over your head, go back to sleep and enjoy the peace and quiet. No hysteria, no stockpile of milk and eggs, no need to skate all over the roads. No sense trying to fight what you can’t control. Trust me, there is no shovel that’s a match for Mother Nature.

Follow The Yellow Brick Road Witches, a wizard and a colorful cast of characters were front and center as the fourth-grade students in Nancy Celentano’s class performed the beloved play The Wizard of Oz at Academy Street Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District. The performance came as a fitting conclusion to a literary study on the book and movie of the

same name. To prepare for their theatrical debut, the class put in months of preparation studying the original classic novel by L. Frank Baum and comparing and contrasting it to the movie version. Reading scripts during their Reader’s Theatre study, the students practiced speaking with expression and learning

about the different roles in the production. With the help of some parent volunteers and their teacher, the class crafted beautiful scenery pieces and tirelessly practiced the different musical numbers. During their two-show debut, the students took to the stage to perform the nearly one-hour play before audiences filled with family and friends.

ROTARY MEETING - Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci recently attended a January meeting of the Sayville-Islip Rotary Club. He spoke about the Town’s goals for the upcoming year, and how dedicated members of the community can help Islip residents in need. A Birdie Soars From the opening overture to the final curtain call, the more than 100-student member production of Bye Bye Birdie at Bayport-Blue Point High School was a sure hit with audiences of all ages when it debuted in early February. The satire of American

society transported audiences back to the simpler time of 1958 and followed the lives of heartthrob rock star Conrad Birdie and the townsfolk of Sweet Apple, Ohio, where Conrad visits before joining the Army. The talented BBP student-actors and

primarily studentmusician orchestra dazzled audiences with such familiar songs as Put On A Happy Face and The Telephone Hour, clearly indicating the months of preparation the cast put into making this year’s musical a tremendous success.

Real World Lessons Learned The inaugural cohort of SJB’s scientific research program, known as GENESIS, welcomed a guest speaker earlier this school year. In December, students in the GENESIS program were offered an opportunity to gain perspective on the process of conducting Doctoral

level research during a roundtable discussion with Kara Hanson Micucci, a Doctoral candidate in the field of psychology at Fordham University. Mrs. Micucci is currently studying the impact of a Catholic school setting on student self-efficacy. The SJB GENESIS

students were able to draw on the lessons they have learned through the program to ask questions about topics such as dependent and independent variables, internal review boards and the process of selecting topics to research. Dave Erlanger, the Director of

the GENESIS program said that “it was a great experience for our students to learn about the process from a Doctoral candidate actively engaged in the research process”. The GENESIS students are currently learning the basics of research and working on creating

thorough literature reviews in anticipation of starting their own projects next year. Mrs. Micucci proclaimed “it was a pleasure to present to the students in the Genesis program. The students generated several thought-provoking questions about the

research presented, shared information about their acquired knowledge, and asked questions about different college programs. They were a wonderful audience, and I truly enjoyed my time at St. John the Baptist!”

Team Tackles Victory

Legislator Rob Calarco recently visited the Patchogue Medford FIRST Robotics Team 329 where the team was in the process of tackling, what one of their team advisors, Dean of Students Mr. Kevin Ray, called the most difficult challenge he has seen in his 13 years of supervising the club. This year’s challenge is called “Ultimate Ascent,” and tasks teams with building a robot that, in addition to shooting discs into slots stacked at varying heights on either end of a 27’ x 54’ field climb, must successfully climb up a hollow metallic pyramid. The more discs the robots successfully attain, and the longer and higher they can stand on the pyramid, the more points they score. The challenge was announced January 5th and the students have been spending endless hours since then planning and brainstorming on their robot since then. There are more than

four dozen FIRST Robotics Team 329 members, but Legislator Calarco spent the bulk of his tour with the students leading the intensive planning efforts behind this year’s robot. Junior Ricky Wecera explained that this is the first year the team is building the plans before building the robot – a major strategy change so difficult to execute only 100 out of the 2,700 competing teams are attempting it. “Ultimate Ascent” has presented new challenges to the Pat-Med Robotics squad and, as they explained to Legislator Calarco, they have responded with new approaches. For the first time ever, juniors Tim Oliveira, Justin Ferrari and Ricky Wecera are using a sophisticated computer program that allows them to test potential mechanical parts of the robot in the actual dimensions and materials before assembly. For example, if they want to see how a specific type of arm will operate, they

Students SOAR

Tossing paper airplanes was only the beginning. Energized Fourth- and Fifth-grade students have been powering enthusiasm for an introductory eightweek afterschool program - the new SOAR Program - aimed at interesting Sayville elementary students in aeronautical engineering. So far, it has taken off like a rocket! Getting it off the ground was done with funding from the Sayville Educational Foundation to promote S.T.E.M. (Science Technology Engineering and Math). However, SOAR program instructors Melinda Moran and Maria Brown were thrilled with the momentum and expressed their amazement after meeting with 27 extraordinarily eager young students from all three elementary schools at the Middle School for their afterschool sessions. To launch the concepts of flight, SOAR began by teaching the students about the principles of aerodynamics and used paper airplanes to demonstrate. After learning numerous folds, the students worked in teams, guided by High School Honor Society Science student volunteers, to create their own paper airplanes, experiment with innovations, and accomplish specific tasks. Some plane designs would need to sustain prolonged “hover time.” Other designs would need to

reach maximum distance and accuracy in flight. In what other school environment would tossing paper airplanes be so highly encouraged? In this program, it has been a scientific way for students to test the shapes and sizes of their designs. In addition, two guest instructors were invited to provide further insights. In one session, Pilot Kenneth Kranz who brought his model airplanes and a flying simulator as interactive props, spoke to the children about his flying experiences and fielded their impressive questions about the physics of flying. The students were fascinated by the technical aspects of flying a plane and Mr. Kranz was equally pleased to share his knowledge and joy for flying. In upcoming session, William Vojir, Aerospace Engineer who worked at Grumman for over 40 years, will share his greatest experiences with the Lunar Module (LM), as he was a member of the Bethpage mission support team for every mission including LM-1 (unmanned), LM-3 (first manned mission earth orbit), all the lunar landings and Apollo 13. In their spare time on a Saturday in January, fifteen SOAR students enjoyed an optional field trip at the Cradle of Aviation Museum where they competed in the Annual Delta Dart Balsa Airplane

Competition. During the competition, the students worked in teams of three to build a Delta Dart plane and then competed for distance, accuracy, landing, and flight time. On their fledgling attempt, the SOAR students took home Third Place trophies and medals for “most trips made to the repair station”! “It was a fun way to spend a Saturday for both students and teachers alike!” Program instructor Mrs. Brown said with a very proud smile. “The students will have a chance to show off all that they have learned and their designed planes,” Maria Brown continued, “at a competition that will be held at Sayville Middle School on Saturday March 16th from 10am-12pm. Students, families and friends are also invited.” The SOAR program’s competition, scheduled for March 16th, is expected to be a high-flying presentation of fun with physics for all who attend!

Study Expo

The “travel agents” who stood ready to inform customers about countries they should visit welcomed visitors to the Panerello Paradise Travel Agency. The Lincoln Avenue social studies expo transformed Mrs. Mary Panarello’s Third-grade classroom into a travel agency for the purpose of presenting the Sayville students’ research projects to invited family and guests. The students had spent weeks preparing, using print and technology resources, as they researched different countries. Each student created an informational brochure using Microsoft Publisher and wrote a persuasive essay intended to convince parents

and guests to visit his or her country. During the expo, parents would be asked to vote for the three places where they would most “book a trip” based upon the most convincing presentations and essays. After, Mrs. Panarello would award three “Employee-of-theMonth” certificates to the students who “booked” the most trips to their country. “As the date approached,” Mrs. Panerello said, “the children got really into the persuasive writing part of the project.” On the day of the expo, the Panarello Paradise Travel Agents were well prepared and happy to offer insights and information to make their country most appealing, and the customers truly enjoyed

the colorful brochures as they learned interesting facts about each country. “The event was great!” add Mrs. Panerello. “The attendance was amazing. The parents were impressed with the knowledge the children had acquired about their countries. One parent even said, ‘I would have done better in school as a kid if learning was this fun.’” Congratulations to all the students for their memorable presentations, but especially to the Employees-of-the Month: Isabella Graziano - New Zealand, Jose Jaimes - Argentina, and Rylie Mullaney - Germany for their winning powers of persuasion.

Woodhull Elementary School fifth- and sixthgraders participated in a hands-on lesson focused on the scientific method during a recent environmental education lesson. During the study, the students learned about such terms as “variables” and “control groups” and how scientists use these valuable concepts to gather data and express themselves. Working in groups, the students were provided

with a variety of materials with which they created a habitat for two types of small fish. Using the scientific method, the students hypothesized whether the small fish would prefer an environment with gravel or without, and whether they would prefer live or artificial plants, shells or no shells. After the control groups and variables were established, the students made decisions about how they would evaluate Fish A

and Fish B. One group chose to time the fish for one minute to see where they swam; another group timed the fish for only 10 seconds and then recorded the results. The students quickly realized that there were several variables and redesigned the habitats to narrow the choices the fish could make. After compiling their group data, the students presented their findings to the class.

“When you’re stressed and tired, every aspect of your life is affected,” says lifestyle expert and spokesperson for the Better Sleep Council, Lissa Coffey. “Controlling stress and getting a good night’s

rest start with evaluating your lifestyle.” Dr. Douglas MacKay, N.D., vice president, scientific and regulatory affairs, Council for Responsible Nutrition, agrees: “Eating a healthy diet, taking vitamins

and other supplements, exercising regularly and getting adequate amounts of sleep are all part of a healthy lifestyle.” Here are more tips to help you sleep better and stress less:

1. Eat a well-balanced diet. 2. Take your vitamins, including a daily multivitamin. Ask your doctor about other supplements, like valerian, for healthy sleep.

3. Evaluate your mattress--consider replacing it if it’s five to seven years old or older. Learn more about sleep at www. lifesupplemented.org and at www.bettersleep. org.
