With all the snow that New York received last weekend, the question on everyone’s mind is, “When does spring begin?” Spring officially arrives on March 20th but most people associate the march toward spring with other events. For baseball fans, spring begins when pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training in Florida and Arizona. To others, it’s when they hear the chirping of happy birds who have returned from Florida. For New York soccer fans, the first sign of spring is the Long Island Junior Soccer League Convention. With over 1,500 travel and premier teams, the LIJSL is the largest soccer league in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA). The LIJSL Convention is annually one of the world’s largest soccer conventions and promises as always to have something for
everyone. 10,000 people are once again expected to flock to the convention from March 8th to 10th at the Huntington Hilton on Route 110 in Melville. The fun begins at 8 p.m. on Friday night, March 8th with the Club Recognition Dinner. The Volunteer of the Year from each LIJSL club will be honored. Dolores Jose of the Mineola Athletic Association, Mitch Pally of the Stony Brook Soccer Club, Bob Porter of the Cold Spring Harbor/ Huntington Soccer Club and Tom Vollmuth of the East Islip Soccer Club will be inducted into the LIJSL Hall of Fame at the dinner as well. Throughout the day on Saturday, March 9th and on Sunday morning, March 10th, there will be LIJSL Sportsmanship Award presentations, meetings for club presidents, coaches and volunteers plus coaches and referee clinics as thousands of

people purchase items from vendors who have come from around the world. There will also be a College Forum in English and Spanish on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. for all interested high school students and their families. Admission to the 31st Annual LIJSL Convention is free. For more information, please contact the LIJSL at 631.648.9020.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES Adult Education Cosmetology students from Dorothea LoBiondo’s class offered hair and makeup services to the Bellport Middle School students during the production of The Little Mermaid, Jr. As a component of their education, the Adult Education students are required to perform community service. Students Susan
Spellman, Jeanne Moir, Nicole Castro, Mariella Pugliese, and Taylor Marangoni who attend the Adult Education Cosmetology program at the H.B. Ward Career and Technical Center (WCTC) in Riverhead, coiffured and applied make-up to cast members at four performances of The Little Mermaid, Jr. from January 30th through February 2nd.
Dorothea LoBiondo said, “This was a worthwhile collaborative effort and community service opportunity for the Adult Ed students to work with school-aged clients.” Bellport Middle School music teacher Alice McAleese said, “We were very appreciative for the cosmetology students’ efforts. It was a good experience for everyone.”

Spring Fever By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Spring has sprung. That’s it. I’ve decided. One sunny day amid a week of snow and sleet and rain, and it’s official. Enough of this winter wonderland nonsense. Funny, since we have really only had one substantial snowstorm over the course of the last three or so winters; but the one was… well, quite a storm, shall we say. And just like that, all the relatively pleasant winters of the past few years have been forgotten – wiped out from the collective memory. Isn’t that always the way? One season gives way to the
next – and we, as a society, go from complaining about the cold, to whining about the spring rain, to being exhausted by the oppressive heat…and then, oh no, here comes that autumn chill again! One endless cycle of wishing for something other than what we have, only to promptly wish it away as soon as it’s within our grasp. We are a flaky bunch, aren’t we? And to think other societies would give anything to live in a temperate climate such as ours, complete with four seasons – and the occasional natural disaster of course. Seriously, in the last year or
two, we’ve experienced two substantial hurricanes, a blizzard of epic proportions, a minor earthquake…am I forgetting anything else? Dare we ask – what next? Well, what’s next for me is spring. Beautiful, mild, clear and crisp. Spring. My favorite season, when the summer is still looming, everything is blooming and the days take on a renewed, vital energy that has been missing throughout the long winter of hibernation and doldrums. Sure, it may officially be a month or so away – but the mentality is here now. Embrace it.
Barefoot Princess, which is docked at the Harbor Crab Co. in Patchogue. The event will include an Irish Soda Bread Contest with entertainment by Seth Nesselbaum and Bangers and Mash. Tea and Irish soda bread samples will be available. “We are excited to have Mike Rau as our 17th Grand Marshal for Patchogue’s annual St. Patrick’s Parade,” said Gail Hoag, executive director of the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce. “We have hosted the St. Patrick’s Parade every year since 1996 and it continues to be a wonderful community tradition.” The 2013 St. Patrick’s Parade will take place on Sunday, March 17th, and begin with the May the Road Rise to Meet Ye 5K at 12:20 p.m. and a Kids Fun Run Half Mile at 12:25 p.m. The parade will follow at 12:30 p.m. and begin at Route 112 in Patchogue
and march west on Main Street. with Mrs. Mandell and Mrs. Loeffler. Mrs. Kleiber provided instruction on using a protractor and measuring angles to prepare the students to measure angles of reflection in the lab. Ms. Benedict reviewed and reinforced important vocabulary so the students had the background knowledge to understand the major concepts of reflection, refraction and dispersion. The students were given opportunities to ask questions, make observations, manipulate
materials, and think logically just like scientists do. It was also wonderful for the students to share common experiences while reading, speaking, and listening to others about what they were learning. Math was strongly integrated into this unit of study allowing the students to apply mathematical concepts within the context of a science experience. We hope that when the students reflect upon this experience they have only illuminating memories!

Shadowing Professionals Looking to gain a deeper understanding of some of the potential careers that await them in the future, 50 Bayport-Blue Point High School sophomores participated in the school’s annual Job Shadow Day in early February. The program enables BayportBlue Point students to get an up-close look at what the “working world” is like and how the skills they learn in school can be put into action. Working alongside business owner Michelle Gillette, BBP sophomore Katie Shelly had the
chance to learn about gluten-free baking and even assist in making some of the Bayportbased Ms. Michelle’s Urban Gourmet’s tasty treats. “This experience is something that I think all students should have before deciding what type of career path to explore in the future,” commented Katie. “My work at Ms. Michelle’s provided me with a better understanding about the ins and outs of the field and solidified my dream of pursuing a career in this field in the future.”
During this year’s Job Shadow Day, students also had the chance to work alongside of professionals at the district’s elementary and middle schools, Bayport Flower House, Brookhaven Hospital, Dowling College’s and Stony Brook University’s athletics departments, the Family Pet Clinic, the Fish Store, Future Tech Enterprise, Little Angels physical therapy office, and the Suffolk County Police Department’s 5th Precinct.
The Fire Island National Seashore will present the following events: William Floyd Estate Winter Woods Saturday, February 23rd, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Experience the winter woods in their dormant state. Find and identify plants, seeds, birds and occasional evidence of animal life on this exploratory hike. Dress for the weather. Be prepared for a 2-3 mile round-trip walk. *** Junior Ranger Workshop: Discovering Wilderness Animals Saturday, February 23rd, from 12 noon to 1 p.m. See the new habitat that Hurricane Sandy created for animals that live in the Fire Island Wilderness. Search for signs of wildlife and create an animal track to take home. Dress for the weather. Geared for SHADOWING PROFESSIONALS - Bayport-Blue Point High School sophomore children ages 8-12. Katie Shelly worked alongside owner Michelle Gillette at Ms. Michelle’s Urban Gourmet *** during this February’s Job Shadow Day. Photo provided by: Jennifer Kuefner, Syntax Winter Beach Botany Sunday, February 24th, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Come along for a brisk winter’s walk identifying plants of all kinds growing upon the barrier beach.
