ohn Pearl Elementary School students recently had the opportunity to demonstrate their own concept of kindness by creating virtual T-shirts in Art class. Mrs. Andersen’s 3rd grade students worked with Art teacher Mrs. Sacaridiz, and YFS Coordinator Mrs. Leopardi by sharing their ideas about kindness in a colorful way. Students and teachers work together to share ideas about the Golden Rule, and congratulate one another on being kind to one another.

Celebrating Service
The Town Board this week hosted a ceremony honoring some of our longest serving firefighters from 11 local Fire Departments. Long time firefighters who have dedicated 50, 60 or 70 years of volunteer service were invited by Islip officials to be publicly honored for their commitment to safe neighborhoods. Collectively, the honorees have more than 1,245 years of volunteerism in fire service. Councilman Steve Flotteron welcomed the honorees and the hundreds of firefighters who came e to support their fellow members. The firemen came from almost every volunteer Fire Department in the Town and each was given a Maltese cross plaque from the Town officials as a thank you for their dedication. “In recent years this traditional Islip town ceremony was forgotten, but this Town Board felt a need to resurrect it to give these men the recognition
they deserve for their halfcentury of service,” said Councilman Flotteron. The honorees came from all walks of life, many of whom joined their local departments when they were still teenagers. In the early 1960’s, when the youngest of the honorees would have joined their department, Islip’s population was roughly 173,000; today it is over 330,000. The oldest honoree in attendance, Edward Kennelly of the Bayport Fire Department, joined at a time when Islip’s population was just 52,000. “Although they have seen Islip transform and change over of the years, their commitment to their fellow residents has remained,” said Supervisor Tom Croci. Classroom lessons on language and world culture came alive for eight James Wilson Young Middle School students this February when they visited the beautiful Central American country of Costa Rica. During the seven-day school-sanctioned trip, the eighth-graders, all of whom are currently studying Spanish at the middle school, had the chance to experience what it is like to live and work in the foreign country. From daily interactions with their host families to visits to natural landmarks such as Mount Arenal, Costa Rica’s only remaining active volcano, and the Baldi Hot Springs, the students had the chance to soak in a bit of history. Putting their lessons to good use, they also had opportunities to perfect their Spanish when visiting local marketplaces and an orphanage in Alajuela,

and while painting rooms in a clinic that services more than 5,000 people. Additionally, to better experience the rich culture of the country, the students participated in a cooking class and learned traditional dances. “With today’s curriculum, we focus on students developing 21st century skills – skills that they will need to succeed in our evergrowing global society,” stated Spanish teacher and program coordinator Keith Scharfschwerdt, who explained that in the future students will need international skills in order to collaborate in business. “The most educationally beneficial aspect of the trip was perhaps the individual experiences that the students had when living with the host families. They were able to see how another culture works from the inside – something that they could
not learn by just reading a textbook and something that many people never get to experience, or at least not until much later in life.” Upon returning to school, the students, along with Mr. Scharfschwerdt and fellow Spanish teacher Vincent Rosa, who also chaperoned the trip with four parents, spoke with their classes about the trip. From the pictures they took, the students could see how beautiful the land is, and from their descriptions, they learned just how impactful the cultural experience was for the eighth-graders.

Mr. John Delio, Principal of Connetquot’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School in Ronkonkoma recently congratulated YFS Coordinator Mrs. Eileen McAlpine for her compelling assembly celebrating the memory of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The entire student body, teachers and staff took part in the January 22nd assembly. According to Mrs. McAlpine, “Students talked about Dr. King’s message to treat everyone equally, and free of discrimination. The students also explained the recently approved Dignity Act, and how it means being respected for who you are, and what you believe in.” Students also took part in a ‘game show’ format which had one youngster ask a question about Dr.
King, and three other students competing to be first to answer the question correctly! The assembly included a video about Dr. King’s life, and significant advances in the struggle for equal

Of Keynotes & Conquering Fears By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Giant sigh of relief. I did it. I delivered a 20 minute (well, more like 10-minute) keynote address in front of roughly 100 high school journalism students and former professors. And I survived. What’s the big deal, you ask? Given that my profession consists mainly of the written word, the spoken word has always presented a bit of a problem for me. It’s not so much a weak point as a giant source of anxiety. Give me something to read, and I’m probably going to race through it and a relatively low volume, barely glancing up. All words will be pronounced correctly, with proper inflection and expression, but it will be over before you know it – and there had better be a powerful microphone handy. Ask me to ad lib and simply speak off the top of my head in front of a group of people – be it 3 or 3,000 – and, well, let’s just say most people know not to even ask. Granted, I have gotten much better at this. Back in high school, I used to dread the words “Oral
Presentation” on any syllabus, and would work myself up into a frenzy of sorts in the days and hours leading up to said presentation. Usually, it came off fairly well; but there were definitely a handful of occasions when my ill-advised attempts to toss the notecards and “wing it” went awry. Suddenly, I would lose all track of what I was saying, where I was going with my “point” (more like tangent) and how on earth to get back on track. Of course, seeing dozens of your fellow classmates staring blankly back at you never helped the situation either. Being a Journalism major in college, I’m sure you can all imagine how thrilled I was to learn that public speaking would be a large part of the curriculum. There was even an entire Oral Communication course I was required to take…what luck! All joking aside, I did learn to slow it down a bit, enunciate, project, make eye contact (well, occasionally anyway) and – dare I say it – even to ad lib a bit from time to time. Not too much. Just enough.
When I was first asked to deliver the keynote for the LIU Post Media Arts Best Of High School Journalism Awards, all those nerves came flooding back. Memories of my valedictory address in high school, complete with my Guidance Counselor asking, “Um, Jamie? Do you need gum or a mint or something? You look like you’re going to be sick…” just prior to my getting ready to go on stage seemed fresh. But that was almost thirteen years ago. A lot has changed. People grow. They overcome their fears. Those once-impossible tasks seem suddenly attainable. In fact, that was the overall reaction of the high school students to my keynote address – Wow, we can do this too. She was just like us, and look what she’s achieved… The dream can become a reality. That, I think, was the greatest compliment anyone could hope to receive. If, by getting over my fear of public speaking and being able to convey my message, I was able to influence even one high school student to pursue his/her dream of becoming a journalist… well, that’s the biggest reward of all.

Stuart Pollak, Principal of Connetquot’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School in Bohemia, welcomed his students, teachers and parents to the January 18th celebration of the life of the Reverend, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In a program designed to teach students about the courage of this Civil Rights icon, students and teachers took turns singing inspirational songs, and reading from the book Martin’s Big Words. The book introduces students to Dr. King’s beliefs about non-violence, and his struggles to achieve equality for everyone
in America. Sycamore teachers took turns reading passages from the book as a slide show was displayed on the media screen in the school’s auditorium The presentation follows Dr. King through his early life, his study of the life of Mahatma Gandhi, his role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and the Civil Rights movement. Mr. Pollak thanked the students for their attentiveness, and encouraged them to incorporate the spirit of Dr. King in their lives. He also extended his thanks to Sycamores’s Character Education Committee for
their organization of the assembly, and the many student photos that were an important part of the video presentation. Mr. Pollak sends special thanks to all the teachers that took part in preparing this outstanding student assembly. Many parents attended the morning gathering along with Connetquot Board of Education (BOE) Trustees Michael D. Kealy and Leo R. Marinick, Assistant Superintendent Kevin O’Brien and district Athletic Director Mark Dellecave.
Marking 100 Days Blue Point Elementary School kindergarten and first-grade students in the Bayport-Blue Point School District marked the 100th day of school by conducting a variety of hands-on mathematical exercises and literacy projects. The students and teachers had a full-day celebration, complete with arts and crafts projects,
mathematical counting exercises and several tasks centered on the number 100. Dressed to look like they were 100 years old, the school’s first-graders created necklaces out of 100 pieces of cereal, completed projects using 100 items in commendation of the day, counted to 100 using different multiples
and, with the help of their teachers, wrote essays about what they thought they would be like at the age of 100. Donning creative hats and t-shirts displaying 100 items, the kindergartners also completed several 100-themed activities, including word games and creative counting projects.

Creative Expressions When I Can’t Sleep... The Gallery
Featuring Poetry And Photos Submitted By Our Readers!
By: Robert L. Macchia, West Babylon Thoughts racing through my mind, Sometimes keep me awake at night, So I get dressed in the wee hours, And go for a walk carrying a flashlight…

The dark streets can be dangerous, But exercise is good for the body and soul, There is not much activity because of the time, Exercise is invigorating especially when it is cold… My wife tells me how dangerous it can be, So I try to avoid walking in the wee hours, But when I can’t sleep the exercise is great, It gives me strength and power… A body that is inactive is not good for the mind and soul, As we age we must remain active and not become lazy, The aches and pains always disappear when I exercise, My mind avoids “oldtimers” and becomes sharp and not hazy…
Rebirth By: Andrew Kessler, Massapequa We refuse to love others See our flaws within them In the mirror these same traits we admire Shatter the reflection Sweep away the broken deception In front of you a blank canvas Take a brush, imagine your reborn soul With each stroke, create the life you wish to live Embrace this new world Gone the scars of yesteryear Welcome to paradise naive virgin How does it feel to truly live and love again?

said Marcus. “Just like with a game of chess, in fencing you have to focus on strategies, be able to anticipate your opponent’s moves and be ready to react quickly.” In addition to his AllLong Island status, Marcus will be competing in this year’s All-County meet in late February and hopes to continue to practice fencing in the future, describing it as a “lifetime sport.” Based on regional qualifications, he will also be competing with the USA Fencing League during upcoming tournaments and continue his training at Mission Fencing in Rocky Point. “Marcus deserves a lot of credit for all of the time and effort he puts into this sport,” stated Timothy Mullins, the district’s director of

Bayport-Blue Point High School senior Marcus Russo has been named one of the top two foils from Suffolk County and a member of the 2013 All-Long Island Fencing Team. The talented student-athlete has been a part of the combined Brentwood-Bayport-Blue Point Fencing Team for the past four years and has been an avid fencer since the age of 10. Marco finished this year’s season with a stellar record of only two losses and more than 30 wins. As part of the team, Marcus competed in the foil category, one of the sport’s three weapons of choice. “Fencing piqued my interest after my mom Maureen brought it to my attention, and because it is more of a mental sport than a physical one,”

physical education, health and interscholastic sports, making special note that Marcus would need to travel to and from the Brentwood School District for his regular practices. “He is a terrific athlete and student, and he is much deserving of this honor.” The combined fencing team, which is coached by Brentwood’s Mike Corona, finished this season with a winning 11-3 record and missed their chance at a run for the county title by only one point in a match against Ward Melville High School. At the end of the season, the team was ranked fifth on Long Island and the foil team was ranked second in their league after coming in second at the Huntington Relays.

Kindness T-shirts
John Pearl Elementary School students recently had the opportunity to demonstrate their own concept of kindness by creating virtual T-shirts in art class. Mrs. Andersen’s 3rd grade students worked with Art teacher Mrs. Sacaridiz, and YFS Coordinator Mrs. Leopardi by sharing their ideas about kindness in a colorful way. John Pearl Principal Ms. Sue White said that such a kindness project “… continues to teach
us that small acts of consideration can unite classmates, neighbors and the community.” Students shared such concepts on their t-shirts like … filling buckets with kindness; no bullying; sharing with others, and not being selfish. Such ideas are part of John Pearl’s Character Education Initiative that focuses on the ‘Golden Rule’, which is to treat others as you would like to be treated. Students and

One student was heard to say that when she was new to the school, and sat alone in the cafeteria, several ‘nice’ girls came over, sat with her, and made her feel welcome! A lesson in kindness that will be shared with other ‘new’ students, no doubt!

have on their social and work lives. High-performance technology and style have merged with durability and ease-of-use when it comes to today’s hearing instruments. The options are so varied, in fact, that there is an attractive solution for just about anyone; today’s high-tech hearing aids can be discreet or as visible as you like. Top designer’s offer styles that appeal to the fashion conscious, the trendsetter, partygoer, the intellectual, or sports enthusiast. Now designer styles and colors can make the average guy who is tired of arguing with his wife and kids about the volume on the TV feel more comfortable and confident wearing hearing instruments. Simply put, today’s hearing instruments transcend the old-world notion about hiding a condition as common as hearing loss. Whether they sit discreetly unnoticeable inside your ear canal, or wrap aesthetically around the contour of your outer ear like the latest fashion accessory, today’s high-performance hearing instruments selectively amplify life. They do unabashedly send the message: “I’m too young and full of life to stop doing the things I love best.” If you think you or someone you care about is struggling with unaddressed hearing loss ask yourself, or them, these questions: • Do you seem to have trouble hearing on the telephone? • Is it more difficult for you to follow conversations when two or more people are talking at the same time? • Do you keep turning up the TV or radio? • Do you sometimes miss a telephone ring or doorbell? • Do you seem more irritated or tired at big family or social gatherings?
If the answer to some or all of these questions is yes, it’s time to take that first step toward regaining the reins on life. Make an appointment with a hearing health professional, take a hearing test, and take charge of your hearing loss. So go ahead, be an innovator, disrupt your life for the better, and get that one consumer electronic that’s sure to amplify your life. Get a hearing instrument! Then hear how dynamic technology and the world around you… can be. Call 1.800.698.5200 and ask for a free booklet on Hearing Loss and how Hearing Instruments may be your answer. Americans love their electronics, smart phones, tablet computers, digital cameras, HDTV’s, e-book readers, MP3 players, and hearing aids (oops, those words ‘hearing aids’ are old, lets re-name them). That’s right – new, sleek, state-of-the-art, life-altering hearing instruments (that’s better). As contoured and futuristic as the most highly styled electronic device – or so discreet that they are virtually invisible – today’s hearing instruments are the high-tech “anti-aging” tool that can help keep lifelong Gen-Xers and baby boomers socially, cognitively and physically active. At its best, technology offers solutions, enriches life, and makes us more efficient. Today’s modern hearing instruments do all three. For more than 34 million Americans hearing loss is part of life. Most frequently, it results from repeat exposure to loud noises – at concerts, nightclubs, sporting events, crowded restaurants, loud workplaces and so on. In many ways, hearing loss is the unintended by-product of life fully lived—that is, before we knew better about how to protect our hearing in such noisy environments. But when ignored and left unaddressed, hearing loss robs from life. It isolates, it debilitates, and it diminishes quality of life and it even takes a toll on financial well being, by cutting into earnings potential. Perhaps, most notable, unaddressed hearing loss creates barriers and unnecessarily strains even the best of relationships. But listen up now! It doesn’t have to, and it shouldn’t. The overwhelming majority of people with hearing loss can benefit from hearing instruments. Eight out of ten hearing instrument users say they are satisfied with the changes that have occurred in their lives, specifically, due to their hearing instruments – from how they feel about themselves to the positive effects hearing instruments

The students also explained
the recently approved Dignity Act, and how it means being respected for who you are, and what you believe in.” Students also took part in a ‘game show’ format which had one youngster ask a question about Dr. King, and three other students competing to be first to answer the question correctly! The assembly included a video about Dr. King’s life, and significant advances in the struggle for equal rights around the world, and included world leaders who supported Dr. King’s vision of peace and
equality. The assembly came to an end with students singing songs celebrating friendship and dignity for all.

TALENTED ARTIST - Ms. Karen Christensen, Connetquot High School Art Teacher, recently congratulated one of her most talented students, Adiba Choudhury, for the creative mural she completed for Assistant Principal Mr. Mark Sidman’s office.
Celebrating A Life
Kindness T-shirts
Students and
teachers work together to share ideas about the Golden Rule, and congratulate one another on being kind to one another. One student was heard to say that when she was new to the school, and sat alone in the cafeteria, several ‘nice’ girls came over, sat with her, and made her feel welcome! A lesson in kindness that will be shared with other ‘new’ students, no doubt!
Marinick, Assistant Superintendent Kevin O’Brien and district Athletic Director Mark Dellecave.
disadvantaged people in the community. Her dolls have raised money for numerous charities and have at times simply been given away to children in need of a little extra care. Sabrina C’Aire Lacy served 20 years as a sergeant in the U.S. Army before settling on Long Island to raise her family. Despite raising her own daughters and building her career, she continued to care for her larger family: the veterans of the Islip community. Today she is the Commander of VFW Post 6431 in Brentwood, where her compassion for veterans in our community is exercised every day. Pastor Roderick Pearson’s record of service to our community is unmatched and has transcended geographical boundaries. Mr. Pearson currently leads St. Mark Remnant Ministries, based in Central Islip. He is presently the President of the Islip Branch of the NAACP, Chairman of Clergy Liaison for 2nd Congressional District Congressman, Steve Israel, Chairman of the Youth Council of the Suffolk County Workforce Investment Board, former Chairman of the Suffolk County African American Advisory Board and a member of the Suffolk County Black Clergy Advisory Board. In September,
2010, Pastor Pearson had the distinguished honor of delivering the invocation for the opening session of the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington D.C. “Each of these distinguished members of our community are worthy of our praise, and we only hope for many years of their continued dedication to our area,” said Supervisor Croci.

Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci and the Islip Town Board recently honored several members of Islip’s African-American community for their significant contributions to the Islip community at-large. Each of the honorees has dedicated their lives toward pursuing socially conscious goals in the Islip community. Those honored at Islip’s 2013 Black History Month Awards Ceremony were Carlton Brown, Evelyn Daily, Sabrina C’Aire Lacy, and Pastor Roderick Pearson. “Islip has a proud heritage of being a Town where people of many different backgrounds come together to build their lives,” said Supervisor Croci. “The sacrifices and triumphs of these honorees have enriched Islip’s culture, fed Islip’s poor, and educated generations of residents on civic values.” The honorees were presented with their awards at a recent Town Board meeting, where the artwork of Carlton Brown was on display. Mr. Brown specializes in photography, and has made a significant contribution to Islip’s cultural diaspora. Evelyn Daily was honored for her tireless community activism. Wealth Of Information
“How would you invest $100,000 dollars?” This is the question for the Sayville High School students in Mr. Chad Cross’ Wall Street: Business and Investments class who are participating in the SIFMA Foundation’s Stock Market Game TM. As part of the 10-week session, the students must invest a hypothetical $100,000, with the goal of creating a top-performing portfolio. In addition, they will be competing against both classmates and students from other schools. Consulting a financial planner would be the first step for getting sound advice. To launch the first “trading day” for the Stock Market Game, Mr. Cross invited Certified Financial Planner Gil Cardillo, President of Peconic Asset Planning of Riverhead, with over 25 years in the Financial Services Industry and a native Long Islander,
to be the guest speaker. The goal was to provide the students with real-world examples of investing while learning academic concepts. Stocks, mutual funds, bonds, ETF’s, ADR’s, P/E ratio, yield, types of retirement plans, risks tolerance, diversification, and market capitalization were among the topics discussed. “The experience for the students was excellent!” says Mr. Cross. “The feedback I received from the students the following day was that the lesson was fun, a learning experience and that Mr. Cardillo was a true professional in the investment field. The students were able to get first-hand information on types of investments from a professional. He related well with the students, he had a great rapport by creating an interactive learning environment where students had to answer questions or ask
questions they prepared for homework. He gave a prize to every student that answered or asked a question.” Among the questions posed by the students during Mr. Cardillo’s visit was Pam Hass’s query, “Is it ever a good idea to place all or a good portion of one’s disposable income into a single stock?” “How often are dividends distributed?” asked Chris Rupp while Caitlin Nolan questioned, “If you put in a limit order and the stock never goes down, what happens to your money?” Meantime Robby Colarusso wanted to know, “What percentage of companies are large, medium, and small caps?” Mr. Cross could not have been happier or prouder of his student’s interest in Mr. Cardillo’s presentation that proved indeed to be a “wealth” of information about investments.

NJHS Honorees
Forty-six Sayville Middle School students who exemplified the five attributes of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, Character, & Citizenship, while maintaining a grade average of 95 or above for four quarters, joined the prestigious National Junior Honor Society during the annual induction ceremony. Once again, NJHS advisor Mrs. Lloyd-Matthews, Guidance Counselor Janice Shuster, and Middle School Principal Thomas Murray recognized tradition at its best with a welcome to the inductees and their proud families during the evening ceremony. Assisting with the celebration, current society members participated by
opening with the Pledge of Allegiance (Anna Brennan), describing the five attributes: Scholarship (Calista Tomasetti), Service (Chase Hofmann), Leadership (Taylor Kobel), Character (Emily Osterloh), and Citizenship (Allyson Bricker), announcing the inductees (Gianna Fraccalvieri, Sarah Laterza, Kelly Marra and Erin Peyton), and lighting the symbolic candles (Griffin Mills). After all the new members received their certificates and handshakes from Mr. Murray on stage, they returned to their seats where current member Isabella Giovan had them stand and recite the NJHS pledge. Closing the ceremony
with parting words, Mrs. Lloyd-Matthews reminded the new members that they are required to continue upholding the attributes of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character as they complete their years at the Middle School, while Mr. Murray commended the students for bringing such pride to the Sayville Middle School community. NJHS is the leading organization that recognizes exceptional middle-level students who have successfully demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character throughout their Middle School years.
