age is transforming the way in which scholarship, research, and creative work in the humanities are conducted. This raises deep questions about the nature of authorship, literacy, and epistemology. “The topic of this conference is especially fitting when we recognize that a growing number of publications provide resources and scholarships to would-be digital humanists.” said Dr. Karen Dovell, Professor of English at Suffolk County Community College and Project Director for the grant. “So many questions arise about ethics and politics, the creative potential of new technologies and what possibilities in the digital humanities remain to be explored.” Dr. Marc Fellenz, Professor of Philosophy, chair of the Department of Humanities at Suffolk’s Michael J. Back To Basics
I realize how many truly incompetent motorists there are out there. Let’s start with the basics. If you come out to find snow accumulated on the roof of your car, CLEAN IT OFF. Those of us who have the misfortune of driving behind you would greatly appreciate it. I know you think you’re saving time, but honestly, they make rear windows transparent for a reason…you know, just in case you want to take a quick peek back there every now and then. Once on the road, let’s review a few pointers… Shoulders of the road were made for the purpose of easing into and out of traffic while merging. Trust me, it’s a much better alternative than
your exit is approaching – oh, in 3 feet or so. Same goes for merging onto a major highway or parkway. Do not assume that the lane is clear for you to simply sail right through at 60 mph. There are occasionally, you know, other vehicles already inhabiting that space. Then there are those scenarios that are simply so bizarre, they are beyond words. A few weeks ago, I was stopped at a light on the Service Road of the LIE. As I waited in the left hand turning lane, a truck opposite me in the right hand lane, I noticed a car approach in the middle lane, “driven” by a man staring intently at the map spread across his steering wheel. Suddenly, he apparently
and cut his wheel, angling his car toward this aforementioned truck in the right lane…all the while, never shifting his gaze from the map. With a mix of horror and amusement, I watched the scene unfold. I glanced at the truck driver, to see him absolutely hysterical with laughter, shaking his head in amazement. The light turned green at that point, spurring me to get out of there before witnessing Act II of this particular play. No telling what the next move might have been! Let’s all focus people. And not on our maps, please. The road. Only the road. And for goodness sake, invest in a snowbrush.

Woodhull Elementary School students are celebrating Parents as Reading Partners this March through a wide variety of educational activities. This year’s PARP theme is “Don’t Bug Me, I’m Reading!” and is once again designed to foster a love of reading in children. To kick off the program, the school hosted a breakfast event that featured bug-shaped pancakes, and students were invited to cozy up to reading by wearing their pajamas to school. Throughout the month, students and their families are encouraged to read together nightly and participate in the building’s scheduled daily activities and events, including a book fair and treasure hunt at Barnes
and Noble and a family fun night at Woodhull. As PARP readers submit their recorded minutes, their cumulative totals will be tallied, celebrated and rewarded with fun prizes and activities. As a school, the students are aiming to log 13,000 minutes of reading during PARP. Planned events included “PARPcorn” every Wednesday, as well as the thematic “Read-aShirt,” “Dress Up as Your Favorite Book Character” and “Poem in Your Pocket” days. Additionally, special guest readers will be visiting the classrooms to share their favorite stories, and in conjunction with the building’s artsin-education program, Billy B the “Natural Science Song and Dance
Man” will be performing “Squads of Arthropods and Romp in the Swamp.” This musical program will focus on insects’ predator/ prey relationship in the wetlands and include many insect- and arthropodrelated songs. Connecting the literacy program to science, the students will also conduct hands-on experiments on different living arthropods: first- and second-graders will foster bess beetles, third- and fourth-graders ladybugs and fifth- and sixth-graders ants. In addition to reading about these insects, the students will be responsible for setting up their habitats, tending to their nutritional needs and monitoring them daily.

Patriotic Pride
“Paying tribute to all those who have served our country!” was the advertised purpose for the Patriotic Concert held by the Music Department at Sayville High School. “Please tell anyone who has served our country to attend,” Department chairman Jeff Hoffman announced. “We hope in some very small way to say THANK YOU with our music.” But there was another reason, deliberately omitted - as a surprise - which was saved for the end. On concert night, current or retired servicemen and women of the United States military, including Sayville teachers, Bryan Coon (Technology), Dennis Fagan (Yearbook), and Mike Huggins (Social Studies), came to hear the performances by the talented Sayville High School music students. Once the Sayville VFW Post 433 Honor Guard (A. Henning, G. McEwen, M. Alcabes, J. Demmers, and S. Hurst) presented the colors during the Pledge of Allegiance, the program delivered - as promised - inspirational renditions of the Star Spangled Banner (Jazz Choir directed by Jeff Hoffman), Simple Gifts (String Ensemble directed by Ari Kramer), God Bless America (Chorale directed by Karen DiMartino), along with the Armed Forces Salute, Shenandoah, and Stars and Stripes Forever, (Wind Ensemble directed by Andrew Giammalvo). In addition, High School senior Christian Savini gave a moving recitation of a poem he wrote to honor those “iconic heroes” who do the work that “no will else will.” As a further tribute to the five branches, Mr. Hoffman invited the military members in the audience to stand when they heard their anthem played during the medley entitled Armed Forces Salute. Applause erupted for each hymn, but mostly, for those who stood proudly at
attention. “It is an honor and a privilege,” Principal Ron Hoffer began as he addressed the guests before the last song “to recognize the heroism, courage, and service of our great country’s servicemen and servicewomen.” After acknowledging their selfless acts of service, Mr. Hoffer revealed the surprise of the evening. “We, collectively, wanted to seize this opportunity to recognize the tremendous dedication of one of our own: Captain Michael Huggins.”
“Captain Huggins has served in four deployments, in addition to a current assignment as the Chief of Wing Intelligence for the 106th Combat Search and Rescue Wing at East Hampton Beach Air Force Base. Now, on behalf of our country, our school community, my family, and myself, I want to publicly thank Captain Huggins and all our servicemen and women who have served our country!” Thunderous clapping filled the auditorium during the standing ovation which followed. When it abated, Town of Islip Supervisor Tom Croci stepped forward to congratulate Captain Huggins “for a job well done” and presented a Citation Proclamation on behalf of 334,000 residents as well as the town board. He lauded
the hometown community of Sayville for taking “time to spend an evening honoring the men and women who serve this country and make our lives on the South Shore of Long Island safe and free…” “Having somebody like Captain Huggins,” Mr. Croci continued, “who not only serves the community everyday in his role as a teacher, but his country as a Captain in the United States Air Force, is that we get to hear stories about veterans… about where they were trained, where they served and the men and women they served with…” Mr. Croci esteemed the value of sharing the veterans’ real stories to give our young perspective “and when you honor someone like Captain Huggins, honoring his great service to the community, you are also honoring all the veterans…and all their families.” Social Studies teacher and Air Force Captain Mike Huggins, who spent his tours in Afghanistan and more recently in Africa, was visibly moved by the surprise. Initially speechless with gratitude and humility, Captain Huggins shared a story about a Somalian soldier’s appreciation of our unique democracy which allows for the transfer of presidential power without bloodshed. After Captain Huggins expressed his appreciation for the evening’s tribute, he acknowledged the dedication of his fellow servicemen and women heroes fighting for freedom - but especially Vietnam and Korean vets, who, for so long, were not duly recognized for their service. “As a social studies teacher, I promise you guys, that my students will all know about Vietnam and Korea and not forget the great sacrifices that you made.” Stars and Stripes Forever was the uplifting musical conclusion to a tribute that meant so much to so many.

Shakespeare Festival Walk like an Egyptian and make your way to Hofstra’s John Cranford Adams Playhouse, where for the first time, the Bard’s Antony and Cleopatra will be performed as part of the University’s Annual Shakespeare Festival, from March 14th through 24th. One of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies, the play is grounded in the historical facts of one of history’s most famous romantic couples. Antony and Cleopatra features direction by James J. Kolb. Show times are Thursday, March 14th at 8 p.m.; Fridays, March 15th and 22nd at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, March 16th and 23rd at 8 p.m.; and Sundays, March 17th and 24th at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12, $10 for senior citizens (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra students with ID. Members of the Hofstra community receive two free tickets with their current HofstraCard. For tickets and more information call the Hofstra Box Office at 516.463.6644, Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. In his director’s notes, Dr. Kolb points out that Antony and Cleopatra features several themes known to recur in Shakespearean works. One is the tension of the “other” – or between conventional and unconventional. Cleopatra was “other” by way of her race (Greek/Egyptian) and also by the fact that she was a great and influential ruler in a world dominated by men. Additionally, the juxtaposition of West vs. East, masculine vs. feminine, Roman coldness and rationality vs. Egyptian passion and heat are all examples of Shakespeare’s exploration of the antithesis in his works. Each Hofstra Shakespeare Festival comprises multiple performances: the fulllength Shakespearean play, a shorter dramatic piece and the “Festival Musicale,” a concert by the Hofstra Collegium Musicum, an ensemble from the Music Department devoted to the performance of early music. The Festival Musicale includes a chorus and ensembles of historical instruments. This year’s Festival Musicale, directed by Professor of Music William E. Hettrick, is StarCrossed Lovers, featuring guest artist Christopher Morrongiello, lute. The companion play is
This Bud of Love, a one-hour version of Romeo and Juliet, an excellent introduction to the works of William Shakespeare, suitable for young theatergoers. This is the sixth year that a one-hour adaptation of a Shakespearean work has been performed as part of the Festival. This Bud of Love was adapted from Romeo and Juliet by Hofstra Adjunct Professor of English Maureen Connolly McFeeley and is directed by Professor of Drama Cindy Rosenthal. Star-crossed Lovers and This Bud of Love will be performed on Saturday, March 16th, at 2 p.m. at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse. Tickets are $11, $8 for senior citizens (over 65) or matriculated nonHofstra students with ID. Members of the Hofstra community receive one free ticket with current HofstraCard. There will also be a special performance of This Bud of Love on Thursday, March 21st, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $6. Members of the Hofstra community receive two free tickets with current HofstraCard. Tickets for the Festival Musicale and companion play are also available through the Hofstra Box Office. The cast and crew of This Bud of Love will also be touring local high schools in March. As with other companion play tours in the past, for many teens this is their first exposure to a Shakespearean production. The tour also gives the Hofstra students the valuable experience taking a show on the road – and the tour is really something they have to manage logistically and artistically. Notable casts over the years have included Phil Rosenthal, the creator and executive producer of Everybody Loves Raymond; Tony-nominees Tom McGowan and Peter Friedman; film and stage actor Joe Morton; film and television actresses Susan Sullivan, Margaret Colin and the late Madeline Kahn; and Tony-nominated Broadway director Susan Schulman, among many others. Steve Buscemi, Kyra Sedgewick and Brian Dennehy, who are not Hofstra alumni, performed in the Shakespeare Festival High School Competition as teenagers. Dennehy has said his brief experience in the Festival helped ignite his love for acting.

“Through this fun, real-world application of skills they have already been learning in school—math, science, reading, following directions, problem solving, and more,” the King Arthur Flour’s Life Skills Bread Baking Program website states, “ the students can now use their new bread baking talents to help people in their community.” The students were not the only ones who enjoyed the demonstration. The bread-baking assembly was
interdisciplinary in nature, crossing all curricula. Responding positively, both in attendance and reaction, were many Middle School sixth-grade teachers, Spanish and French teachers, Physical Education teachers and Art teachers along with their students. In addition to the educational aspects, the success of the King Arthur Assembly was a collaborative effort by Middle School faculty and staff. Family and Consumer Science Teachers Andrea Cacciatore and Cheryl Scantlebury
District Biathlon In cooperation with the Bayport-Blue Point School District, the district’s Wellness Committee invites all community members to take part in a BBP-Biathlon scheduled for Saturday, April 6th. The event will feature a twoand-a-half-mile bike ride and a three-quarter-mile jog/walk. Participants are encouraged to ride their bikes to the event and are asked to arrive to the high school auditorium, 200 Snedecor Ave., Bayport, at
7:45 a.m. The event will officially kick off at 8:15 a.m. A registration form for the event is posted to the district website, www. bbpschools.org. “The Wellness Committee wanted to organize the biathlon as a free event to help promote family, fun and fitness in the Bayport-Blue Point community,” stated John Selvaggio, Blue Point Elementary School physical education teacher and committee member.
Suffolk Zone 4 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - Wednesday March 13, 2013
Nearly 300 Sayville Middle School students gathered in the auditorium and paid close attention to the breaddough demonstration given by Mrs. Amy Driscoll, regional instructor for King Arthur Flour’s Life Skills Bread Baking Program. The students were focused for several good reasons. First, because it was truly fascinating, Second, because King Arthur flour would be giving each student who wanted to participate the recipe and ingredients for baking two loaves of bread at home, and Third, because, if the students succeeded, they would be able to enjoy one tasty loaf with their families and bring another back to donate to either the Sayville Food Pantry or the Light House Mission. During the bread-dough lessons, Mrs. Driscoll engaged the students by sharing tips and techniques in a hands-on presentation. With the help of Seventhgrade student volunteers, Kristin and Conor, she explained how water, flour, and yeast combined to make bread dough. The students viewed every move, thanks to a video camera that was linked to the overhead projector and which filmed it for display onto a large, on-stage screen. Even more amazing, the life-skill demonstration satisfied the Middle School’s curriculum on so many levels. Mrs. Driscoll taught the students about the biology of sanitary habits, the science of rising yeast, the math of fractions for measuring, the language of recipes, the problem-solving of assembling ingredients, and the art of patience. When completed, the project would also have students contributing towards community service.

Baking Bread
cleared the calendar for the Life Skills Bread Baking Program; Buildings and Grounds unloaded the pallet of over 1,600 pounds of flour when it arrived before the assembly; Food and Nutrition personnel Cheryl Heckle and the ladies in the kitchen baked 16 loaves of bread to distribute as samples to the students; Special Education teachers Phil Anzalone and Gerard Sampson, along with their life-skills students, assembled over 300 bags of ingredients for distribution to the students and faculty. In preparation for the presentation, the Instructional Technology staff set up the overhead projector and remained present to assist with any technology issues during the assembly. Mrs. Scantlebury received positive feedback about the presentation from students, like Ryan Muscarella who loved eating the freshly baked loaves and Leah Tama who went home and took complete charge of her baking project with confidence, thanks to her Home and Career Skills classes from last semester. Faculty members Leslie Davis extolled the entire concept of King Arthur Flour’s Life Skills Bread Baking Program, for their generous donation of flour, the high-quality of the instructor, and the remarkable opportunity for the students; Anna Martin reported that the PTA parents were similarly delighted by the program and their children’s excitement for such an important life skill. In the end, the participating students rose to the occasion and produced more than 220 scrumptious loaves to distribute to local charities.
Swearing In Ceremony
For an optional $5 registration fee, attendees can purchase a commemorative t-shirt designed by Blue Point Elementary School fifthgrader Morgan Woolley and Sylvan Avenue Elementary School fourth-grader Jennifer Prescott. These two students were selected as winners of the Wellness Committee’s t-shirt design contest, to which more than 75 entries were made by district elementary students.
DISTRICT BIATHLON - Blue Point Elementary School fifth-grader Morgan Woolley and Sylvan Avenue Elementary School fourth-grader Jennifer Prescott were selected as the winners of a T-shirt design contest for the upcoming BBP-Biathlon. They are pictured here with Blue Point Elementary School physical education teacher John Selvaggio and Athletic Director Timothy Mullins.
Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer William J. Lindsay recently conducted the swearing-in ceremony of Holbrook Chamber of Commerce Directors Ken SanPedro, Bea Hoffer, Joe Storzinger, Debbie O’Rourke and Treasurer Fred Coste. “It is always an honor to have Bill attend our
meetings and lead the swearing-in of our officers,” said Holbrook Chamber of Commerce President Rick Ammirati. “A large part of the Chamber’s success is due to the partnership between us and Legislator Lindsay, and I want to thank Bill for always doing what’s right for Holbrook residents and the local business community.”
“I want to thank the officers and membership of the Holbrook Chamber of Commerce for their continued commitment and dedication to Holbrook, and I look forward to continuing our work together,” said Presiding Officer Lindsay. “I am proud to call them my friends and fellow community leaders.”

Sparking Conversations
Filling the school cafeteria, Bayport-Blue Point High School students and several staff members engaged in a meaningful discussion of current politics as they took part in the third annual Issues Forum, titled Election Reflection. The event, which focuses on a different topic each year, centered on the recent presidential election – in particular, domestic and foreign policy as well as social issues surrounding the nation’s political parties. “This event focuses on helping our students develop a deeper understanding of politics and enables them to gain a better appreciation for the importance of such historical events
as the reelection of a president,” said John Limperatos, the school’s social studies department chair and program coordinator. “Through their independent research and the information shared during the Forum, we hope the event sparks a knowledgeable and civil dialogue about issues of current importance.” On the panel were current seniors Bridget Foley, Alex Gamcsik, Nick Keenan and Sean Rall as well as high school teachers Anthony Curran, John Limperatos and Sean Meade and middle school teacher Stacie Sosinski. Fielding questions from moderator Matt McMullan, the school’s English chairperson, the panel shared their individual
viewpoints on such topics as the Electoral College, the polarization of the Republican Party and what President Obama’s second term will look like. Audience members – including students, faculty, administrators and Board of Education members – had the chance to submit questions for the panelists to discuss. The event not only served as a mechanism to inspire outside discussion of classroom history topics, but also as a fundraiser for a senior scholarship in honor of former teacher and New York State Assemblyman Paul E. Harenberg. Over the past three years the Issues Forum has raised hundreds of dollars for this cause.

Administered and funded by the Sloan Foundation, the fellowships are awarded in close cooperation with the scientific community. To qualify, candidates must first be nominated by their peers, and are subsequently selected by an independent panel of senior scholars. Past recipients of the Sloan Research Fellowship have gone on to win 38 Nobel Prizes including Stony Brook University’s Paul C. Lauterbur (1965 Sloan Fellow, Stony Brook), 14 Fields Medals (mathematics) including Stony Brook University’s John W. Milnor (1955 Sloan Fellow, Princeton), and eight John Bates Clark Awards (economics). Sloan Fellows may use their grants to pursue whatever lines of inquiry are of most interest to them, and they are permitted to use fellowship funds in a variety of ways to further their research
including for such purposes as equipment, technical assistance, professional travel, trainee support and any other activity directly related to the Fellow’s research. Funds are awarded directly to the Fellow’s institution. Professor Essig received a BSc and a BSc (Hons) in Physics and a BSc in Mathematics at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa; and earned his PhD in physics from Rutgers University. He has published almost 30 peerreviewed articles in such journals as Journal of High Energy Physics, Physical Review D, Physical Review Letters, Journal of Physics G, Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics and more. He has also given approximately 50 invited presentations.
Research Fellowship
Rouven Essig, PhD, an Assistant Professor at the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Stony Brook University, has been selected to receive a Sloan Research Fellowship from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. He is one of 126 awardees from 61 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada chosen for this prestigious honor, which comes with a $50,000 twoyear fellowship. Professor Essig was
selected based upon his distinguished performance and potential to make substantial contributions to physics. The Sloan Foundation recognizes Sloan Fellows as “rising stars” and the “next generation of scientific leaders.” He joins the ranks of 62 other Sloan Research Fellows from Stony Brook University that have received this honor before him. “I am excited to be recognized with a Sloan Research Fellowship,” said Dr. Essig. “This fellowship will help me support the training of a graduate student, which will greatly aid my research program.” Dr. Essig’s research program, broad in its scope but specific in its goals, is to maximize the opportunities to understand and discover the fundamental constituents of matter and their interactions.
His research involves particle physics at the cosmic, intensity and energy frontiers with two broad goals: to develop the theoretical implications of the data being collected at dark matter detection experiments, at high-intensity beam experiments, and at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland; and to generate new ideas for experiments that can further understanding of the fundamental constituents of nature. “I congratulate Rouven on this outstanding achievement,” said Dennis N. Assanis, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Stony Brook University. “His broad research program embracing the intensity, cosmic and energy frontiers, is at the forefront of particle physics research and the search for new laws of physics. We look forward
to great discoveries from him in the future.” “The Sloan Research Fellows are the best of the best among young scientists,” said Dr. Paul L. Joskow, President of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. “If you want to know where the next big scientific breakthrough will come from, look to these extraordinary men and women. The Foundation is proud to support them during this pivotal stage of their careers.” Fellowships are awarded in eight scientific fields – chemistry, computer science, economics, mathematics, evolutionary and computational molecular biology, neuroscience, ocean sciences and physics. Since the program’s inception in 1955, the Sloan Foundation has awarded nearly $120 million in support of more than 4,200 early-career researchers.
My babies are growing up What they used to love me doing Is just embarrassing now My little boy walks down the hall From a distance, all I see is his back Then suddenly, he turns to see if I’m still there And gives me a wave My heart melts ‘Cause his big sisters They don’t look back anymore She doesn’t look back I guess it’s okay It means she’s growing up In every sense of the way Sometimes those moments get lost Day to day But when my little guy looked back It reminded me of so many yesterdays I drop her off to her hourly job She tells me not to stop in front It’s too embarrassing Getting a lift from my mom She scurries in through the door She doesn’t look back anymore My baby is getting ready to dance Her tutu and make-up on I used to walk her backstage And she’d glance and I’d give her a wink You’re going to do great Don’t be scared Just look straight ahead Don’t look at the floor Now, she doesn’t look back anymore They say you have to let go Cut those apron strings
No one told me the pain that would bring ‘Cause she doesn’t look back anymore She packed her bags And we flew and flew A thousand miles later We were at her new school I tried to be strong And decorated her dorm I knew soon It wouldn’t be long To say our goodbyes I didn’t want to ruin her excitement Being on her own for the first time I put on my shades To hide my tears I could feel her stare As I drove away The pain is too great Nothing will be the same as before I’ve had to learn To not look back anymore Hold on to those moments When their sweet little eyes Search for you in a crowd

One day as I was walking with my cane And time for me to go I glanced up And behind the curtain I could see those big brown eyes She was looking back To make sure I was okay Saying a silent prayer That I’d make it home safe on my way My baby looked back today
