jlynn@theneighbornewspapers.com By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I was never an Apple person. I learned on a PC, I used them throughout my high school and college days, and I couldn’t fathom – or didn’t want to, more accurately – ever learning to use a Mac, let alone liking it. Well, all that changed once I became introduced to the Apple world at my first office job. Now, not only do I prefer it, but I don’t even remember how to work my way around a PC. Everything seems so much easier and userfriendly that I can’t recall why, exactly, I was ever so opposed to broadening my horizons. Now, I’m not fully indoctrinated mind you. I own an iMac, a couple of iPods and – finally, after years of carrying around an outdated, semi-obsolete “flip” phone – an iPhone 4S (iPad to follow at some point in the near future I’m sure). I have never camped out for a product, I don’t upgrade every time a new one comes out and I’m sure there are many who are far more educated when it

The Siri Factor comes to using them. But still, I love Apple, especially my iPhone. To be fair, given my prior cell phone experience, just about anything short of a tin can with a string would seem like an amazing upgrade. But this truly is. And my favorite part of it all? Why, that would be Siri. Siri, the “Intelligent Assistant” who comes pre-installed on the iPhone 4S and 5 models… Siri, who, for all his/her (“I was not assigned a gender,” it replies when questioned) quirks and occasional glitches, has quite the personality. Obviously, it was designed to be utilized in such a way as to make life easier by creating reminders, providing directions, weather updates and more. Not that I have used it for this purpose too often. No, I prefer to antagonize my poor little personal assistant with bizarre, out-ofleft field queries – just to see what responses I might get. I remember shortly after purchasing my iPhone when I decided to experiment with the Q&A possi-
bilities. Most were met with “I’m sorry. I don’t understand. Did you mean…” or some variation of that. Exasperated, I finally exclaimed at one point, “Why are you so dumb?!” Without missing a beat, Siri replied, “Why do you hate me? You don’t even know me!” Hysterical laughter. Seriously? This thing was obviously so much smarter than it let on. Fast forward to just a little over a month ago, after Siri and I had more of an opportunity to become acquainted, and I asked, “Siri, did you know today is my birthday?” He/she/it responded, “I’m so sorry Jamie, I didn’t know. I didn’t get you anything.” Apparently, we were now friends. With the launch of the new iPhone and software update, Siri is now being marketed as “new and improved” and able to overcome many of the previous glitches that had previously marred its novelty. Just imagine all the fun conversations to be had now! Most definitely an Apple person now. No going back.

transferred to the Knox School in St. James, a private school, where she is currently in 11th grade. During these years, however, she has evolved from victim to activist founding the Jamie Isaacs Foundation For AntiBullying, writing her story in the book, In Jamie’s Words, and working with both local and state legislators to pass strong anti-bullying laws. Brooke DiPalma is a student at West Islip High School who decided to address the issue of suicide prevention and awareness when her father committed suicide. She created the “P.S. I Love You” Campaign that went viral when she did a YouTube video. In the video, she asks everyone
to look out and care for others who may be having suicidal thoughts. She designated a day in February in her school to be known as P.S. I Love You Day. Once she spread the word, it was adopted by many other schools, both locally and in other states. On that day, the students raise money and donate the proceeds to organizations that are work in suicide prevention. The Crisis Center was selected by Brooke and her fellow students to be the recipient of 2012’s fundraising. The Crisis Center, now in its 41st year, is dedicated to increasing suicide awareness, educating everyone about the warning signs of
suicide, and destigmatizing the subject of suicide and spreading the word that “it’s okay to ask for help.” “Recent statistics about suicide underscore the importance of the Crisis Center’s 24/7 hotline for anyone to be able to access at critical times in their lives,” states Linda Leonard, Executive Director. “Our Walk is an opportunity for anyone who has been touched by suicide, either directly or indirectly, to talk openly about a subject that has, for too long, remained in the shadows.” Suicide and suicide prevention affects everyone: · For the first time since 1998, suicide is in the top ten leading causes of

against heart disease. That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills more women
than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol (LDL)
levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent weapons in the fight

organizations. In addition to the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, Pink Ribbon Campaign funds will be donated to Prevention Is the Cure and the Breast Cancer Research Program at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Panera Bread, in partnership with WALK 97.5 who is getting the word out, will donate 25 cents for every Pink Ribbon Bagel sold in its 22 Long Island bakery-cafes. “The initiative continues to grow each year,” says Greg George, Vice President of Operations for Doherty Enterprises, Inc., franchisee for Panera Bread. “WALK 97.5 makes a big push in the fall to educate and inform listeners about breast cancer prevention, screening and treatment.” He adds, “WALK Radio brings awareness and Panera brings the funds to help sustain critical groups here on Long Island.” To give the fundraising a healthy head start, Panera is kicking off its campaign with POWER OF PINK DAY on Monday, October 1st, more than quadrupling its donation by contributing 100% from each bagel sold to the fund. George urges businesses, organizations and individuals to call their local Panera bakery now to reserve Pink Ribbon Bagels for October 1st. According to George, every Pink Ribbon Bagel or baker’s dozen of 13 Pink Ribbon Bagels sold that day or preordered for pickup on October 1st will provide a 100% donation to the designated breast cancer organizations. On POWER OF PINK DAY, Panera will contribute $1.25 for each bagel, $9.99 for each baker’s dozen. For those who have yet to taste a Pink Ribbon Bagel, it’s a Cherry Vanilla Bagel--a brown-sugar sweetened, wholesome
cranberry-cherry chip bagel—that is shaped into iconic “pink ribbons” as a symbol of hope in support of local breast cancer help organizations. WALK 97.5’s Linda Healy, herself a breast cancer survivor, spearheads the radio station’s breast cancer advocacy efforts and reminds us that POWER OF PINK DAY provides the perfect excuse to plan a bagel party at work or with friends on October 1st. Throughout the remainder of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, each Long Island bakery-cafe will continue to contribute by donating 25 cents from every Pink Ribbon Bagel sold as well as $1.00 from each and every Power of Pink Baker’s Dozen - any assortment of 13 bagels that is sold that month. Last year, in partnership with WALK 97.5, Panera Bread’s Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign raised more than $26,000 over the course of the month-long campaign, including $10,000 on kick-off day. This year, the Long Island Panera Bread bakery-cafes are hoping to do even better - and they are counting on individuals and groups to make that happen. Anyone who is worried about breast cancer should call the Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline for help at 800.877.8077. You are not alone.

Dear Readers, This is three year-old Dharma. She is one of the rescued dogs I wrote about last week, and her story breaks my heart. Dharma’s ear has been badly ripped (healing now), her face is scarred and bares witness to the unspeakably cruel life she has led. Apparently, she was used as bait to train the fighting dogs. Perhaps she was chosen because she is petite (only 36 lbs), demure and sweet. Despite the unthinkable cruelty that she has suffered at the hands of man, she loves people. She is truly a special soul and deserves to be in a loving home with people who will cherish her and return the love she is so anxious to give. To quote Brookhaven Animal Shelter director Dori Scofield, “She forgives the humans who mistreated her. After all, dogs are most forgiving creatures. They put us humans to shame.” Dharma is all gentleness and loves to give kisses. You can see the sweetness of her soul shinning in her bright eyes. Unfortunately, Dharma has been bitten and attacked by the fighting dogs in training so many times that she must be the only dog in the household. Readers, can you give Dharma the opportunity to live the kind of life that she deserves to have? Her suffering has touched me deeply. Please call the Brookhaven Animal Shelter at 631.286.4940 and consider opening your hearts and home to this gentle loving girl. I would love to hear from the special person who adopts Dharma. Please visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting...

History Of Healthcare Exhibit A new exhibit at the Stony Brook University Health Sciences Library that displays medical instruments and objects from the mid-1800s to the 1980s illustrates the evolution of modern medicine. A concept initiated by the Suffolk County Historical Society, Healthcare Instruments – Past and Present was developed in partnership with the Stony Brook University Libraries and Stony Brook Medicine. The exhibit showcases instruments from the collection of the late Dr. R.Sherman Mills of Setauket, a family physician on Long Island who practiced medicine from the 1940s to early 1980s. The exhibit opened September 13th, and will be on display for the entire 2012-2013 academic year. Currently 40 medical instruments from Dr. Mills’ collection are featured in the Stony
Brook exhibit, which is the first in a series of displays at the Health Sciences Library. All of the instruments were donated by the Mills family to the Suffolk County Historical Society. “This exhibit is a wonderful example of how Stony Brook University partners with community organizations like the Suffolk County Historical Society to create an experience that benefits everyone,” said Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, President of Stony Brook University. “Thanks to the family of Dr. Mills and the Suffolk County Historical Society, Stony Brook has the opportunity to feature displays that clearly show how far we have progressed in medicine. By experiencing this exhibit, students and practitioners alike are able to put Stony Brook’s advanced and cuttingedge medical practices

into perspective.” “ H e a l t h c a r e Instruments - Past and Present” is in keeping with an academic medicine trend to showcase centuries-old medical instruments to expand the understanding and educate students on the history of medicine and the health sciences. Major medical research organizations also promote the professional knowledge and public understanding of the history of healthcare practices through exhibits or archives. For example, the National Institutes of Health includes an educational arm on the History of Medicine, and the New York Academy of Medicine opened a Center for the History of Medicine and Public Health in 2012. “Only by knowing our past in medicine will we be able to develop new innovations in the future,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, MACP, Senior Vice President for the Health Sciences and Dean, School of Medicine. “The displays in the exhibit are a teaching tool to understanding a timeline of progress for medical practice in areas such as treating trauma and injuries, infectious diseases, and common illnesses that have affected people for many generations.” “This new exhibit underscores the continued importance of libraries in the University’s academic and research missions,” said Andrew White, PhD, Interim Dean of Libraries, Stony Brook University Libraries. “Even in today’s technology driven information age, libraries continue to play a longstanding role in collecting information about both the past and present. It is equally important for Stony Brook as Long Island’s largest research library to
preserve such unique collections, which are also examples of primary source information, whether printed, digital, or physical items like in this exhibit.” “We are very happy to work with Stony Brook so that students and the community can step back into the past and get a stronger sense of what instruments were used in the practice of medicine many years ago,” said Kathryn Curran, Director, Suffolk County Historical Society. “My father began collecting medical instruments in the early 1960s, and he quickly saw the value in keeping these so that young people would be educated by seeing medical instruments used in the past,” said Barbara Russell, daughter of Dr. Mills and Brookhaven Town Historian. “He would be happy to know that what started out as a small collection has grown into something large that can educate many,” added Russell, speaking about her father, who continued collecting medical instruments until his death in 2009. “The medical instruments and objects exhibited are a visual presentation of the timeless challenges of treating illness and injury,” explained Carla C. Keirns, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Preventive Medicine, and Medicine & History, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and one of the curators of the exhibit. “As a whole the objects indicate the similarities and differences in the ways doctors have treated illness and injury for more than a century.” The exhibit features three primary glass displays. Each display is organized by a single history of medicine theme. These themes are: Visiting Doctors,
Diptheria and Whooping Cough (Pertussis), and Hazards of the Job. Dr Keirns pointed out that until the beginning of the 20th Century, health care from birth to death generally happened at home, even surgery and especially childbirth. The Visiting Doctors display features items like an umbilical scissors (circa 1940s), a metal either mask (circa late 1800s), and Dr. R. Sherman Mills’ doctor’s bag, which he used for house calls into the 1980s. Late 19th and early 20th Century medical instruments used to treat infectious diseases and exhibited in the Diptheria and Whooping Cough display are powerful reminders of the dangers of diseases such as diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tuberculosis, and influenza a century ago. Thousands of children died of diphtheria and pertussis each year during the early decades of the 20th Century, Tuberculosis remained the leading cause of death in the United States through the 1920s, and the influenza pandemic killed as many as 100 million people worldwide in 1918 and 1919. The emergence of the germ theory of disease that proved microorganisms cause infectious diseases, the development of microscopes to identify and study microorganisms, and the creation of effective vaccines changed the landscape of infectious disease practice within the past century. Dr. Keirns said that these advances evolved into a new emphasis on preventing infectious diseases. Items in the display such as a diphtheria kit (circa 1920s) and a vapocresolene lamp (circa 1880s) used to treat whooping cough and
other throat ailments are instruments no longer in use. The Hazards of the Job display shows what tools doctors used in trauma medicine before emergency rooms and EMT teams became a routine part of medical practice during the 20th Century. On Long Island, the workplace environment in the 1800s and part of the 1900s posed serious risk for injury in industries such ship building, maritime work, oystering and fishing, agriculture and manufacturing. Accidents such as a fall from a horse-drawn wagon or a serious laceration to a limb at the work place often led to amputation. Dr. Keirns said that changing technologies, work patterns, and improved medical practices made loss of limbs and death from accidents much less common over time. An illustration of this progress is exhibited by a surgical saw that was used into the 1980s for amputations, in contrast with a 21st Century fixator that trauma surgeons at Stony Brook University Hospital routinely use to save limbs. Some items in the displays indicate the similarities of certain medical practices decades ago to today’s practices. Objects like a reflex hammer (circa 1960s), Red Cross gauze (circa 1950s-60s), and a German made blood pressure kit from World War I are nearly the same or precursors of today’s instruments used in the delivery of care. Over the next three years, the Stony Brook University Libraries, Stony Brook Medicine, and Suffolk County Historical Society will jointly present additional themed exhibits of “Healthcare Instruments Past and Present.”

This earlyOctober event comes at the beginning of the 25th year of Domestic Violence Awareness Month - a designation renewed by Congress annually since the first national domestic violence hotline was created in the late 1980’s. “If there’s one message we hope to share loudly and clearly on October 4th as we honor survivors and remember victims of domestic violence, it is this,” said Jeffrey Friedman, Executive Director of The Retreat, a nonprofit on eastern Long Island, “Domestic violence services are a critical component of our community’s public safety strategy; these services

Legislators, nonprofit agencies, police, and residents of Suffolk County are set to shine a spotlight on a worsening epidemic of domestic violence-and ways to stand together to stop it. Commemoration Day will be held in Hauppauge on Thursday, October 4th. As autumn 2012 approaches, one in four women is likely to experience domestic violence in her lifetime. During these difficult economic times, it is more difficult for victims to leave abusive relationships. How will they meet the financial needs for themselves and their children? With services being cut, who will be there to help through? Local and national experts say that the persistent down economy has fueled household financial tensions, substance use, and domestic violence in a vicious, inter-related cycle. At the same time, funding to domestic violence agencies have been cut and are falling. As a means of raising

In ignorance our acts do sometimes undo what love and caring took long to accrue We learn from no teacher or books from any shelf to think, act or feel like another, just ourselves It is for this reason misunderstandings will arise that influence our judgment and cloud up our eyes When we stare into a mirror and look upon our face we should examine it deeply like a telescope through space

This year, Beach Cleanup 2012 was held on Saturday, September 15th, at Robert Moses State Park, Field #2 from 10 a.m. until 12 noon. Hundreds of volunteers combed the beaches and collected over 2000 pounds of debris. For the 26th year, Beach Cleanup 2012 was another big success! “Thank you to everyone who came out for Beach Cleanup 2012,” Senator Johnson said. “We had a wonderful response again this year. Thanks also to all who brought along donations for our local food pantries.” The data collected from the Beach Cleanup will be compiled by the American Littoral Society and sent to the Ocean conservancy in Washington, D.C., where it will be analyzed and compared with data from around the world. The information is used to develop national and international programs and policies to control debris so that our beaches will remain clean and safe. It is also used by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to evaluate
the effectiveness of existing laws and programs to prevent debris from washing up in the first place. The Long Island Beach Buggy Association and the Long Island State Park Region cosponsored the event. Numerous c o n s e r v a t i o n organizations, sportsmen’s groups, and Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troops from our area participated. This year at the Beach Cleanup, non-perishable food items were collected to donate to the local food pantries where supplies have been badly depleted.

Volunteers Needed AARP Foundation TaxAide, the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service, is seeking volunteers across the state to help New York taxpayers who are seeking assistance preparing and filing their 2012 tax returns. Volunteers do not need to be an AARP member or retiree to participate. AARP Foundation TaxAide volunteers receive free tax training and are reimbursed on a limited
basis for qualified program-related expenses. They help taxpayers at sites around the state, learning new skills while giving back to countless communities. “This year, we’ve assisted thousands of people in preparing and filing their tax returns,” said Will Stoner, Associate State Director on Long Island. “We could not do it without our volunteers, who make an indelible mark on the communities they help.”
Last year, more than 1,800 Tax-Aide volunteers helped over 113,000 taxpayers across the state. They join the more than 35,000 Tax-Aide volunteers across the country, helping millions of taxpayers each year. For more information on how you can join the AARP Foundation TaxAide team, visit: www.aarp.org/tavolunteer 8 AARP Foundation TaxAide is offered in conjunction with the IRS.

the 2003 National Research Council report, “Bio2010: Transforming Undergraduate Education for Future Research Biologists,” which called for programs of professional development to engage faculty at research-intensive institutions in taking greater responsibility for h i g h - q u a l i t y undergraduate biology education. The report emphasized the importance of new approaches to teaching based on emerging evidence about how people learn and a greater emphasis on interdisciplinary teaching. It called upon college and university administrators - as well as funding agencies - to support the development or adaptation of such approaches. At the 2012 Summer Institute, teams worked together to develop or adapt a series of “teachable tidbits” that they agreed to implement in a course during this academic year and assess whether students learn from that material. Teams also pledged to implement a mentoring seminar to enhance the ability of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and others to mentor undergraduates in their research laboratory. The Undergraduate Biology Program, which sponsored the participation of the three Stony Brook professors in the Summer Institute, is preparing to create a new interdisciplinary specialization in quantitative biology, for which Professor La Camera will contribute a new undergraduate course. “For me, the real objective of higher education is to learn critical thinking skills that can be applied to any problem outside the classroom,” said
SUFFOLK ZONE 4 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 26, 2012
Three Stony Brook University professors have earned the distinction of Education Fellow in the Life Sciences by the National Academies for the 20122013 academic year. This honor was bestowed upon them by virtue of their selection and participation in the 2012 National Academies Northeast Regional Summer Institute on Undergraduate Education in Biology, held this past summer at Harvard University. Stony Brook University’s team of professors, Giancarlo La Camera, Assistant Professor of Neurobiology and Behavior; Liliana Dávalos, Assistant Professor of Ecology and Evolution; and Edward Luk, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, assembled with teams from 14 other research universities from the northeast for five days of presentations, discussions, intensive group work and activities focused on enhancing undergraduate education, with themes of active learning, assessment and diversity. “I want to personally thank the researchers for the extraordinary efforts they are investing to introduce new pedagogical approaches to teaching and the significant contributions they are making to provide high-quality education in undergraduate biology and the broader life sciences,” said Dennis N. Assanis, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Stony Brook University. “They are shining examples of the teaching excellence and innovation in our research-intensive institution.” The Summer Institute is the result of a key recommendation from

advanced manufacturing fields where there is such a high demand in New York and across the country,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher. “I applaud our congressional delegation for working so diligently in securing these funds and for their continued partnership and recognition of SUNY’s ability to drive economic development and job growth across New York.” “This is a historic moment for New York and the SUNY system,” said Dr. Shaun L. McKay, President of Suffolk County Community College. “This grant will provide funds to aid job growth and job creation across the State. We launched our Mechatronics program in 2005, and since that time the College has trained hundreds of workers from different manufacturing companies across Long Island. With funds from this grant, we will be able to continue using our expertise and our training equipment, which are unparalleled in this region, to provide real solutions for a manufacturing industry that is grappling with critical hiring, training and retention challenges.”

This summer, 13 Long Island credit unions combined efforts to assist thousands of needy families and children across the region and bring an end to hunger. The collection, which ran from June 2nd to June 30th, was a huge success. Participating credit unions accepted food and monetary donations at their branches and local supermarkets throughout Long Island with all proceeds benefiting Island Harvest and Long Island Cares, Long Island’s leading hunger relief organizations. Together the credit unions collected an astonishing total of 3,460 pounds of food and $31,213.21. After six years of collection, the credit unions are proud to announce that their efforts have produced $247,570.43 and 18,040 lbs. of food for Long Island’s hungry. “The food donated by the Long Island Credit Union Cooperative has allowed us to provide 1,129 meals for families in need,” said Paule T. Pachter, Executive Director of Long Island Cares. “This is enough meals to feed a family of four for the entire summer.” “Summer can be an extra difficult time for families who struggle to find enough to eat, since school breakfast and lunch programs are not available,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, President and CEO of Island Harvest. “Thanks to the generous efforts of each credit union, food
collected will help provide much needed food assistance for children and families.” The participating credit unions included: Bethpage Federal Credit Union, The Heart Center Federal Credit Union, Island Federal Credit Union, Long Island Community Federal Credit Union, Long Island Realtors Federal Credit Union, Nassau Financial Federal Credit Union, NEFCU, North Shore LIJ Health System FCU, People’s Alliance Federal Credit Union, Sperry Federal Credit Union, Teachers Federal Credit Union, Town of Hempstead Employees Federal Credit Union, Winthrop University Hospital Employees Federal Credit Union. Men on the Move Moving & Self-Storage generously donated their services by providing collection boxes and picking up and delivering the collected food. Long Island Cares, Inc. The Harry Chapin Food Bank is Long Island’s first food bank, serving the hungry on Long Island since 1980. Long Island Cares brings together all available resources for the benefit of the hungry on Long Island and provides emergency food where and when it is needed, and sponsors a wide array programs and direct services that help families achieve self-sufficiency. The organization was founded by the late singer/activist Harry Chapin in response to the immediate needs of hungry Long Islanders. It is continued by his wife
and partner Sandy Chapin, a dedicated board of directors and talented staff working out of their 35,000 square foot facility in Hauppauge and storefront hunger assistance center in Freeport. Long Island Cares is a member agency of the Food Bank Association of New York State and Feeding America. For more information visit www.licares.org. Island Harvest Fighting hunger and touching lives, Island Harvest serves as the bridge between those who have surplus food and those who need it, supplying over 570 community-based nonprofit organizations on Long Island with critical food support to help stem the advancing tide of hunger in our communities. Island Harvest has delivered more than 71 million pounds of food, supplementing nearly 66 million meals, since its inception in 1992. In support of its mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island, the organization is actively involved in education, outreach, advocacy, job training and hunger awareness programs. Island Harvest is a member of Feeding America. For more information about Island Harvest, visit www.islandharvest.org. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis said, “These federal grants are part of the Obama administration's ongoing commitment to strengthening American businesses by strengthening the American workforce. This strategic investment will enhance ties among community colleges, universities, employers and other local partners while ensuring that students have access to the skills and resources they need to compete for high-wage, high-skill careers.” The initiative complements President Obama's broader goals to help ensure that every American has at least one year of postsecondary education and the U.S. has the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020. Through this initiative, each state plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico will receive at least $2.5 million in dedicated funding for community college career training programs. U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer said, “This multi-million dollar federal investment is a game-changer that will connect unemployed New Yorkers with the state’s top employers that are ready to hire skilled workers in their own backyard. As I toured the state this year and met with business leaders across the state, company after company told me that they were ready to hire workers, but that there was a mismatch between the workers out there and the skills these companies needed. This grant speaks directly to that need, and it’s just what the doctor ordered to help more New Yorkers get back to work.” “This federal support will help grow SUNY’s already powerful capacity to prepare students for careers in high-tech and

Grant Received Suffolk County Community College today announced that it was among 24 SUNY community colleges to receive funds for job expansion through workforce training and local employer partnerships. A consortium of SUNY community colleges has received $14.6 million as part of a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor and will use this funding to develop new classes and certification programs, bring new technology into labs, and expand the availability of internships and externships at local manufacturing businesses. The programs supported by these funds are designed to improve retention and achievement rates; accelerate progress and reduce time to credential completion; and provide state-of-the-art training that meets industry needs and prepares participants for entry or advancement in targeted career pathways. The SUNY Training and Education in Advanced Manufacturing (TEAM) consortium will allow SUNY community colleges, including Suffolk County Community College, to establish permanent worker training programs for eligible New Yorkers in the field of advanced manufacturing. Once established, these training programs are expected to train at least 3,000 individuals statewide. This announcement is critical to closing the gap between the hundreds of available jobs in these industries and the documented lack of skilled local workers to fill those positions. SUNY colleges and over 100 businesses throughout the state will now have the resources to further develop job training programs that will meet the emerging needs of manufacturers across the state.
